I sincerely love TKOL. I can see why, especially coming off of In Rainbows, the looping may seem repetitive but I really love the atmosphere of it all. I love dancing to the loops in the king of limbs , like in feral , I feel so free and the music is simply hypnotic , I’m generally a shy guy so I just dance alone in a frenzy to tkol in my shower , and it feels so freeing. The albums radiates an energy that simply cannot be replicated - the albums feels to me like a old swamp with many secrets , full of life.

I’m sorry but every time this video describes something about the album in a negative light, it’s something I, as a huge fan of the album, personally love about it. I think the longform repetitive jams make this album feel free and unrestrained from typical songwriting norms, it really feels like this album places you in its little world. And I like the coldness of the album, it has a real maturity to it.

The first time I "discovered" Radiohead was listening to amnesiac front to back. I hadn't heard anything like it and instantly wanted more. TKOL was the next Radiohead album I fell in love with and I could not stop listening to it. Everyone always seems to give it a hard time but it's always been one of my favorite of their albums. It got me into experimental music as a genre like nothing else ever had before. They are truly a band that doesn't have a bad album but I will say the one I've listened to the least and can sometimes be difficult to get through in one sitting is definitely Pablo Honey. I know creep was a big deal and they "get a pass" because it was their first album but you can not tell me that Pablo Honey is better than the TKOL. In the in rainbows video Middle 8 talks about how Radiohead was able to make music that was about the experience and skip the nonsense of a label. It feels like a turn around for him to now start a video by stating how bland Pablo Honey is and then go on to say TKOL is the worst Radiohead album. To me the album is an enjoyable experimental listen beginning to end that changed what I thought music could be.

I get that The King of Limbs might not push the buttons that more rock driven Radiohead albums push. But as someone who is really into techo/electronic music this album does a lot. It builds on the electronic dance music vibes that you can hear in Atoms for Peace and The King of Limbs lends itself much better to being played in a techno night club than most other Radiohead albums. And of course it provided the source material for the TKOL RMX 1234567 which turn those repetitive loops and whimpers into some of the best electronic tracks of the decade. A transformation that would be much harder with tracks from a more rock style back ground.

It's really though for me to think like that. I was introduced to Radiohead with King of The Limbs from the basement. I confess that it was completely strange when I heard the album version, but songs like Separator or Give up the ghost were still amazing. For me, it was the songwriting that it made me interested on listening more of them. After that, I decided to listen to their whole discography. When I heard Pablo Honey, it almost got me thinking of abandoning the band... I think that Pablo Honey is actually a bad album - I'd much rather listen to Nirvana. The only thing that kept me motivated to keep listening to Radiohead was TKOL songwriting. Luckily, I insisted and when I heard Ok Computer my mind blown. So, at least for me, it's pretty clear that King of Limbs is amazing for many reasons, but I can see how frustrating it can be and that I was lucky that I've listened From The Basement version first.

This is spot on. The only thing that I think is missing from this video, is the fact that expectations for The King of Limbs was through the roof. Because In Rainbows broke the industry with its "pay what you want" model + them dropping a surprise part 2 album to accompany it - The King of Limbs had become an event.
TKOL had a similar online rollout (I remember in the UK and in New York they also handed out breaking news edition newspapers on the streets to tease the record). So for Radiohead fans, it was a very important moment. IMO that is why when we finally heard the album, it was a big let down.
You are absolutely right about your critiques. I remember at the time, Radiohead fans complained about the album feeling very anemic / cold. The constant loops felt lazy and boring (especially when compared to their past albums).
Basically the consensus at the time, was that it felt like it was two EPs recorded at different times and shoved together to make an LP. Interestingly if you. go back to interviews post In Rainbows launch, Yorke on several occasions claimed they weren't going to releases another album again. That they would. instead release new music like two singles at a time.
So a lot of fans theorized that the TKOL was the result of their plans to drop 2-3 songs, but then deciding to combine it for a full length LP at the last minute. Based on your research, this doesn't sound accurate. But the final album really does not feel like a cohesive project. And totally sounds like two EPs or projects combined.
Another thing I would like to add, is that Radiohead did a massive greatest hits tour before recording In Rainbows. Throughout those shows, they debuted most of that record live. There we a handful of tracks that IMO were 10x better live and were RUINED in the studio. Hardcore Radiohead fans will recall, Videotape was freakin incredible live, and made completely toothless in studio.
So the band had a history at that point of over-thinking production of songs that were already perfect and making them worse. So TKOL being the way it is kind of doesn't shock me (that the live versions would be so much better. I know in that case they had made the songs digitally first).

but think of it, the name itself sort of defines it's chilling awkward and uncomfortable nature. I take it as more of a textural collection of sorts, it holds some incredibly beautiful tracks in my opinion. Separator is one of my favourite radiohead tracks because of that slow build to such a beautiful melting soundscape. And that whimper at the end is the albums ghostly dissolve as it disappears. The album itself is a ghost. No defined edges and sort of a bit strange, but holds some sort of beauty.

The King of Limbs revels in subtlety and texture. You say these songs don't evolve, and that's just not true. They may evolve in less obvious ways (I think of the epic choruses of Let Down or the soft to loud dynamics of Creep), but they do evolve. There is a quiet revelation in the way Separator blooms (excuse the pun) with chiming guitars as it reaches its close. Morning Mr Magpie delivers one of the band's more engaging moments with its constantly shifting atmosphere crescendoing into sludge drum heaven. Bloom is perfection; I'd listen to that drum loop for hours. Give me the King of Limbs over most records period.

I personally really love The King Of Limbs as a whole, I think there are many strong songs and at least 4 of the 8 songs land in my top 30.
Bloom feels very chaotic, constantly adding layers and I think does a great job of keeping the repetiting patterns fresh with things like the brass adding onto a already great song.
Good Morning Mr.Magpie is my personal favourite, I love the vocals and the jittery guitar rhythm and never seems to get old, and live this song sounds fantastic.
Feral is another very chaotic song that feels like a vital piece in the album, I personally love the vocals despite no actual lyrics being present.
Lotus Flower has the best vocals on the album and I really like the rhythm, another song that doesn't outstay it's long runtime despite it's repetition.
Separator and Little by Little are still growing on me a lot and I think that while maybe a bit lower quality to the aformentioned songs are still great and will just take a bit more time then the others to really get used to.
Despite this, I feel like Give Up The Ghost and Codex don't really fit the same standard the other songs have. Overall they don't match the high energy the other songs have and I feel Give Up The Ghost especially doesn't add much to the first couple of layers, overall feeling a bit out of place in an album where every loop feels like it's pushed to it's absolute limit.
As a whole I think The King Of Limbs is one of their strongest albums, it has a very clear concept and feels very complete despite it's short runtime. The LP has a lot of standout songs. Good Morning Mr. Magpie and Bloom are easily in my top 10 radiohead songs and even the weaker songs are very high up for me.

This album is one of my favourites ever! I watched the in the basement version and it felt like a key that unlocked the rest of the album and wow.. its one of those albums you can listen to as many times as you want because you are always finding new details. It ranks above Pablo honey, the bends and even amnesiac and HTTT for me!

all this would not have happened if they had added "the daily mail" in the album, between little by little and feral

When I'm really sad, the second half of TKOL is the closest I've feel to a sincere hug from a beloved friend. I really love the second half, I wish you all can give it a chance.
