How I Lost my Mind Trying to Find the Saddest Radiohead Song
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- This video is about my crazy, irrational, difficult, weird, and dumb experiment I named Everywhere at the End of Radiohead. It basically involves listening to every song on the gloom index (a chart ranking the sadness of every Radiohead son) in order of happiest to saddest). I did it to find out what is the true saddest Radiohead song. It may or may not have worked.

No suprises and that song are literally the only songs that managed to make me cry for seemingly no reason
street spirit made me cry for like 20 minutes
Great video, but the gloom index does NOT count lyrics. If it did, then Fitter Happier would have been at 100, and 15 Step would be way, way lower. For a happy sounding song, 15 Step has some of the darkest lyrics on In Rainbows.
This was really good, the way you explained everything was really interesting and made the time to explain and explore further on how the songs made you feel honestly this was really great video to watch can’t wait to see what else you come up with 🔥🔥👑
Honestlty there's no other song in the world that could make feel so fucking drepressed and sad than How to Disappear Completely
I agree that True Love Waits is their saddest song but i think Last Flowers is a sad song too.
"cracked eggs dead birds scream as they fight for life, i can feel death can see its beady eyes" how is street spirit not one of radiohead's saddest songs?
Great video men, i'm honnored to be your 10 000th subscriber ;)

Last Flowers is the saddest imo

@@Djay-tz3inMotion Picture Soundtrack funeral version
True Love Waits is such a fucking masterpiece. It just feels like a finale. And it might be that actully. Ed has said that “even though Radiohead hasn’t really “split up” Radiohead doesn’t exist anymore” True Love Waits might actually be a goodbye to Radiohead.
Tbh I would be sad if AMSP was the last album by RH, but at the same time I love that album so much I would argue it's an amazing farewell from Radiohead
I fw true love waits but the live in oslo version is def better
@@kybris5000 real asf
Wait wtf are you talking about? Radiohead is done? really? (sorry for my language)
@@El_Carlangas As far as I know, no not really. Philip Selway has implied quite the opposite in multiple recent interviews, they're still just on an extended break. The interview where Ed said this has been notoriously taken out of context
This was great! Honestly IMO Motion Picture Soundtrack is the saddest song.
Agree, especially with the personal significance it has on me. The composition is so perfectly crafted honestly
Agree and my favourite Radiohead song
FACTS
Without a doubt. I despised kid A and could never make it to that song but when I did man what a religious experience it is now my favorite song of all time and favorite Radiohead song but Radiohead still isn't my favorite band haha.
For me, it was always "Street Spirit (Fade Out)"
Yes, How to Dissapear is devastating, specially if you know the context and "been there"
Same with True Love Waits, if you count the AMSP version
But there is something about Fade Out that just puts me in a state of total hopelesness. Like you're gettin into a dark void and never return. The riff, the tempo and the final line "Immerse your soul in love". Man it hits me every time
Glass Eyes, True love waits, Daydreaming
faaaaaaadeeee outttttttt agaiiiiiiiiinnnnnn
YES. I FUCKING LOVE STREET SPIRIT. i cry so fucking hard
that's because I think many of the sad radiohead songs have an underlying theme of hope. They either resolve in a positive way or leave the listener with a state of acceptance. Street Spirit is pure hopelessness. No acceptance, just misery.

Let Down is incredibly sad in my opinion
Hella underrated too /s
let down underrated
No shit Sherlock
Great video, man. IMO the melody of a song is way more important than the lyrics when deciding how depressing the song is, that’s why nothing will top Videotape
P.S: the most depressing song I’ve ever heard was also written by Thom, it’s dawn chorus
Speaking of songs with soaring melodies 😅
How is “How to disappear completely” so high up…
i know right??
I don’t think that spotify takes the lyrics and further meaning into account.
My Top 10 ranking of the Most Melancholy Radiohead songs..

Honestly, I don't feel sad when listening to Radiohead lol. I feel relaxed during their sad songs.
oh brother bear.. i hate to break it to you. i was in a "radiohead makes me calm" mindset last year and I have to say: I am so much happier without it. with that being said, a little sobbing to moon shaped pool and in rainbows never hurt anyone...
man i been waiting for someone to say this, this is exactly how i been for the last 5 years
Idk when i look at the lyrics it makes me sad but otherwise not everytime
Maybe you are someone who find comfort in suffering, because that is what you mostly living in
@@muhazreen I understand what you are saying and it makes sense, but I wouldn't say there's a lot of suffering in my life.
However, knowing that I'm in the minority of Radiohead fans who don't get sad when listening to the band's music still leaves me asking myself questions.
Alternate title: Running up my Therapy Bill
(A Deal With Thom)
6 hours straight

Nah, how to disappear completely isn’t even there what

I still don't get why 15 Step is "Radiohead's happiest song" when the title literally refers to the 15 steps before death. It also touches on themes like hopelessness and even suicide. Bloom is upbeat and is even in a major key and has way less but still depressing lyrics.
It's likely due to the bpm I feel. that's the only thing that I can explain it by.
@@xander1052That and the fact that many people hardly pay attention to lyrics. I’m not accusing anyone here of that, just saying I’ve seen it a lot.
it’s the pacing, percussive instruments, mixing and tone
Fun fact: true love waits is in a major key too
The saddest IMO:
5. Exit Music (for a Film)
4. Street Spirit
3. Pyramid Song
2. True Love Waits
1. Videotape
I love how professional you are, these videos are good.
what good gd player
Let Down doesn’t really sound that sad initially but man after the first couple listens of OC, it just kinda hits you. It sounds so drowned out and like your feelings are just bottling up and then come out in a beautiful resolution. Not to mention the lyrics are so relatable for a lot of people in the modern world, which is impressive given how it was written in the late 90’s and still carries weight 30 years later. I think Thom is a time traveler… or just a very introspective guy lmao
Motion picture soundtrack should be number 1
If you don't think How to disappear completely is their saddest song, you have never been depressed
Edit: and true love waits
I am saying htdc because this specific Spotify playlist did not consider it sad
idk daydreaming was pretty sad as well
true love waits and daydreaming
Nude and exit music (for a film) could also be considered.
@@karankaushikk nude isn't actually sad, but it's really trippy
that and Motion Picture Soundtrack imo
The fact that No Surprises was nowhere to be found here upsets me. Why? Because I have a history of listening to No Surprises when I feel suicidal because No Surprises contains a subtle form of sadness, only in the lyrics. The instrumentation sounds quite positive and drowsy; as if it were a lullaby - but it’s far from a lullaby, because lullabies are meant to be soothing; not speaking about a way to attempt suicide. That on top of the fact that the first time I heard it, I cried for 2 and a half hours because I was extremely depressed and did nothing but weep for at least an hour everyday during that time.
I feel you
No Surprises was inspired by Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys
Here’s some songs from that album that in my head inspired it based off sound:
Wouldn’t it Be Nice
That’s Not Me
Sloop John B
I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times
I don’t think the riff sounds happy at all, it gives me chills every time I hear it
Bro, 15 step is literally the song that most mess me up
Is ironic how personal experience can change completeley the meaning of the original sound and context
let down deserves fourth, such a depressing and dejected vignette despite the lively instrumentation
It's True Love Waits 2016 and nothing else compares.
Good vid!
One of the saddest for me will always be "Sail to the Moon". It manages to be optimistic, but also somewhat resigned to disappointment.
honestly, even if its from OKNOTOK, man of war is imo the saddest radiohead song
okay maybe not saddest persay but its definitely tragic, and i feel SO many emotions listening to it its unreal
For me it’s a tie between Glassy Eyes and How To Disappear Completely
I AM NOT A VEGETABLE has to be the happiest part of a radiohead song
I have cried with All I Need, Motion Picture Soundtrack and How to disappear completely
The day that I cry with Last Flowers it will rip my soul from my body
All i need is beautiful tho.
How to dissapeare i feel is more like a release for Thom of all they went through when they were thrown into and felt trapped by the wonderful (not) music industry so its actually a medicine for him , making it not so sad and you can feel it all through you when i cries it out in the end and its a good 👍 feeling ♥️
All of the pitch-shifted versions sound like Coldplay songs

this unfortunately doesn't include b-sides. I think "how I made my millions" is their saddest song.
I find it funny how you describe "Give Up the Ghost"--a song that would listen to on purpose during my sad boi phase--as an alley-oop. 😅
True Love Waits was the second Radiohead song, right after Iron Lung. As someone who never experienced romantic feelings for anyone, my lack of romantic emotions combined with the theme of the song struck me every time. And it's so interesting how both people who never felt romantic love and who did can have their hearts equally torn apart by the violence of Mr Yorkes' words.
Fun experiment, at least for the audience - keep ‘em coming!
"MK Uktra like 6 hour experiment" lol
The saddest:
1) no surprises
2) Street spirit
3) you and whose army
4) like spinning plate (why us)?

Videotape seems sadder than True Love Waits to me. It’s also my favorite Radiohead song.
I won't lie my personal opinion is that videotape is the saddest song. it also happens to be a masterpiece.
I personally feel like Street Spirit should've took the cake because according to Thom himself, every Radiohead song has a resolve, except for Street Spirit. The melody sounds very beautiful, but just so gloomy at the same time, fits very perfectly.
I do believe they are two different types of sad. Videotape is a sad because of death song. True love waits is a sad because of love song. Not saying it’s a love song but from the perspective of someone wanting desperately for love.
True love waits Acoustic, for me is by far the winner
Bullet Proof … I Wish I Was is incredibly sad. I find Codex uplifting.
Thank you for bringing us another Liam Anthony vid, Gloom Index
let down underrated though
6 hours damn how u not dead ? 😅
hi this is a good video keep it up yeah yeah yeah
i listened to true love waits for 3h straight, i ended up being really numb
There's a playlist on Spotify of every Radiohead song ranked from happiest to saddest and the end was so accurate, I was crying so much I physically couldn't shed anymore tears but continued crying
Let Down is such a sad Radiohead song that makes me happy........it's very strange........not sure what it is about the song 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
the instrumentation in that song isn't sad at all, that's probably why. It's more just the lyrics.
@@illusion8457 This is very true.......a lot of my favorite Radiohead songs are like that. Weird Fishes is another one like that
Lighten up, Squirt
Please share the playlist you used!
That is totally my bad, just added it to the description
Literally how is nobody talking about All I Need?? That song is DEVASTATING!
I've always thought I will is the saddest song, just with the subject matter and the symbolic meaning in the album.
I feel like it especially hits the feels more after listening to the punch in the gut that is the Los Angeles version, the contrast of the angry b-side and lamenting original version makes httt’s I Will even more devistating
Motion Picture Soundtrack is really sad but to me its very comforting and even a little bit hopeful. It gives me an overwhelming sense of "you cant do anything but carry on".
nice vid, I subbed. imo How to Disappear Completely should be lower.
I have… issues with this. So first, ever since I first heard about the gloom index I've been convinced it's BS. Like you say, there are things that don't make sense: Fitter Happier is too high up, personally I think Optimistic should be higher, 15 Step is way too high for a song that literally gets its title from height of gallows ("15 steps then a sheer drop" takes a whole new meaning when you realise that) and also note that "one by one comes to us all" 100% refers to death, then you have the fact that the band (or at least Thom) actually said in interviews that their saddest song, according to them, is Street Spirit (Fade Out) and it ranks way too high to reflect that (granted since the interview a couple albums were released but whatever)
But yeah. The thing that bugs me? You're missing out some stuff. See, Fitter Happier isn't "neutral" or "propaganda-like" or "without judgement just stating facts" cause you miss the most crucial part of the song: the end. Throughout the whole thing you have these creepy minimalist electronic tunes pulled from the depths of contemporary stuff (think Olivier Messiaen or maybe Paul Lansky like in Idioteque), the thing is definitely unnerving. A robot voice, somewhat familiar (at least for mac users) but creepy, foreign and uncanny enough to not make you feel at ease, saying the strangest things with sad tunes in the background (seriously "shot of baby strapped in back seat" is a combination of words that make my blood curdle) but the end? "A pig, in a cage, on antibiotics"?? Really? Couldn't be a clearer critique of the whole thing? Just straight up saying "you're being treated like cattle, break free"…
Also the index was made before Man of War, I Promise and Lift were release and also it's worth noting it includes none of the b-sides and you can TELL. Banana Co. might not be the most upbeat but it's not sad. Molasses is funky and fun, Million Dollar Question deserve a place up in part A and maybe even the top 10 happiest songs. Not including Maquiladora is a CRIME. I Am Citizen Insane chill one up in the happier sounding songs, Trans-Atlantic Drawl is fine and not too depressing, jfc do I need to basically cite all of the B-sides 😂
If they couldn't even be bothered to include Supercollider in the list, the list is bad. 100%.
Also note Give up the Ghost isn't really "optimistic" or "harmless". It may *sound* care free, but the lyrics are very much about lost souls and dying in the arms of the person who loves you. Not great.
And hard HARD disagree. True Love Waits is NOT AT ALL sad. Sure, the piano is melancholic. Sure, in hindsight, playing this song again for Thom after years and years, after adding a live guitar + voice version at the end of some versions of Kid A, but finally putting it into an album which so far has been their last together all that after he split from his wife and she passed away from cancer thought they'd been together for half his life (that's what he says at the end of Daydreaming, it's the words "half of my life" played in reverse), sure, it takes on a new, sadder meaning. But it's also about how true love endures. How it doesn't fail. How it conquers. How that one kid his parents left at home when going on holiday lived a whole week by eating packets of crisps and lollipops while waiting for them ("true love lives on lollipops and crisps"). It's a bit sad, plenty melancholic, but also hopeful and not even that creepy or anything. I mean come on.
Maybe one day I should try my hand at putting the songs in order from happiest to saddest for me… hmmm…
How to disappear completely is their saddest song, my favorite song, and one of their best in my opinion
Using music by The Caretaker during the Gloom Index explanation was a great touch.
street spirit not being mentioned is a let down
I can't begin to explain how much Radiohead helps when I'm not good mentally

Man, what an interesting video! You're so charismatic.
i feel like Fake Plastic Trees deserves a much higer spot...talking about the fake love and being fake yourself, wearing you out all the time until you feel you couldnt be who she wanted all the time, truly fucks me up
in my opinion, the saddest songs are usually the empty ones. the ones with a quiet guitar, a soft piano and minimal to no drums.
Saddest RH song and I’ll never change my mind, it’s the only song that makes me speechless
Last Flowers

Fitter Happier being the 3rd happiest Radiohead song is crazy. It’s depressing as shit.
fitter happier being 75 is comedy gold
For me the saddest song is street spirit (fade out). To me that songs lyrics are so bleak and desperate, and the guitar harrowing. It serves as the bridge between the energetic rock of the bends, and into the robotic machine like world of ok computer. Radiohead once said they dont know how they made that song, it just came out of them.
Well done, great experiment and video. Let Down's place was highly unexpected, as I find the climax towards the end to be almost optimistic and beautiful, at least melodically.
Really cool video. I liked the section bringing up Fitter Happier - this shows above all that "sadness" is something that is much more nuanced than can be displayed in a number. A lot of songs which I consider to be Radiohead's most depressing (I Might Be Wrong, My Iron Lung, How To Disappear Completely) were completely misplaced
I can't believe how to dissapear completely was so high up
What about let down!😢 its really sad!
