Hugely impressed by your tech skills, Lauren! Many congratulations. 🎉💯🥂 Hope the installers take responsibility for their inept work … the anti-siphon is evidently not doing its job and issues will recur unless that’s put right.

There’s never a shortage of issues on a boat to fix…but your tenacity is remarkable. It’s a pleasure to watch your focus and resolve. Fair winds, Lauren.
It does look as if water is syphoning back along the exhaust system, because the engine is mounted in the saloon there is going to be a long run back to the exhaust outlet in the hull. Your Exhaust Muffler/Waterlock should be as low as possible well below the engine exhaust and be big enough to hold all the water that is in the exhaust hose when the engine is switched off, you should also have a syphon break at the highest point of the exhaust system normally at the top of the big loop (You do have a big loop?) and can be as simple as a piece of 5/6mm industrial airline fixed with Sikaflex/mastic through a hole in the top of the exhaust hose with the other end of the airline vented to atmosphere. The problem isn't going to go away so the exhaust system needs to be looked at asap.

You remained poised, calm, focused and determined. You are so very beautiful and so very talented. Had that happen on several occasions on various yachts it was the water lock muffler every time on one of the mufflers I installed a drain in bottom of muffler and drained it before switching off engine to stop it vacuuming back as no parts where available nice work good luck 👍
@@laurenlanders Further to that answer, some boats have installed an exterior flap over the exhaust to prevent water getting in with a following sea (mostly) and another issue is that when installing the engine the calculation for the waterline height vs exhaust outlet height was incorrect or marginal, especially when heeling, and a higher exhaust elbow may be needed.

That's what I was thinking. A drain valve installed in muffler and or low point of exhaust piping and make opening those valves to check for water during each engine shutdown operation. Just one more item on your checklist and one that I will seriously contemplate doing on any future vessels I work on.
Had the same problem with my engine, an old Penta. The sea water pump is driven with a shaft from the crancshaft inside the engine and the gaskets had worn out and moved out of position. If your water pump is working in the same way, it could be an idea to check the gaskets there. By the way - super impressed by the way you are dealing with motors, bees and everything else !
I just found your channel and I’m binging your vids! I’m so jealous!! You’re living the dream! You’re awesome!! Skilled in so many things! So impressive!!! I’m so glad you got it working again!! ❤
The engine sounds fine! Do a compression test on each cylinder. If each compression is within range you should be OK! Also do several oil changes back to back to clean the oil passages from the water intrusion. You can use any cheap high detergent oil to do the flushing. Check the oil while engine is running for evidence of foaming, or milky gray colour to the oil. From the limited information that I gathered from the video the issue seems to be from the exhaust riser. ( improper ventilation, or height of riser elbow). If you have a blown head gasket, you will notice it in the coolant level, and oil condition. You might also consider an exhaust tailpipe flapper; especially important in following seas. If the hydrolock did not occur while the engine was running at high revolution, most unlikely that you have a bent rod. (If you had a thrown rod, you would know it within seconds of starting the engine) The compression test will indicate if you have a bent push rod, or scorched cylinders. Again from the sound of the engine, without being there I will say that most likely the engine is fine!( Also a marine biologist, and a ships engineer). Good luck! You are a very brave, and capable woman!
Nice video! If your exhaust elbow is not high enough sometimes sea water can siphon back into your engine. Also check there is no corrosion in your other engine parts that can possibly mix with your oil.
I watched your full of life and emotional film! Thank you very much! Again, I am convinced that if a person is busy with what he loves, he will solve everything! This is the second time this week I’ve heard this problem. A little advice from someone who does a lot of research and also work on everything from boats to skateboards. TURN THE SEACOCK OFF when you turn the motor off and turn back on after the motor starts. It’s not going to overheat just starting it but make sure you turn on soon as motor starts
Great video I really enjoyed it I felt the pain of your engine going out but not giving up and pushing forward amazing! keep these great videos coming I look forward to seeing more of your adventures and learning from them as well.
Hi Lauren, Read carefully the post by Nigel Hamer, 30 mins before this post. The 'vent' at the top of the exhaust hose he speaks of is very important to prevent 'back-syphoning' seawater into your engine when it is switched off! Love your channel and best wishes from Bonnie Scotland 🙂
Damm, I can’t see a woman cry! It’s not the seacock, it’s the exhaust. You can’t have water through your cooling water intake, You have water flowing back from the exhaust through the open exhaust valves. Have a good shipbuilder look at it.
Your eyes Lauren 😍😍😍 Wish I was there to lend you a hand with that engine. Not normal it keeps water locking after new taylor made exhaust was fitted...must there also be other problems....get it checked by a good expert as soon as possible: installation heights, siphons...I think it is more an installation issue than an engine one. Well done for your effort, you rock girl. Warranty should be claimable, maybe not as an issue with the engine itself but job was not correctly done fitting it, I would seek advice from a different expert and then try to be refunded. Whish you the best from San Sebastian- Spain 💙💙💙💙
@Lauren Landers another great video. I always look forward to watching. if the shop is claiming there is no warranty go back and look through all your paperwork when you purchased it and had it installed. Also I would think there would be a manufacturers warranty atleast for x amount of hours. If the shop that installed it is pulling your chain , reach out to the engine manufacturer. Seems like they screwed the install again, like your exhaust system needs to be adjusted. Sorry your dealing with this engine bs still. It's great seeing you smile through it though.
Wow ..I was so glad for you that you managed to get this " Brand New " engine started again....As I see it you have two options...one ..find yourself a partner who is a full time marine diesel mechanic and has decided to stop work and would like to go sailing....two ..when you get back to the US enroll in the best intense marine diesel course and when finished you can rebuild an engine blindfolded......🐈
nanni = JDeere ... Strong, robust, simple engines, few electronics, require the old care that diesels received. Keep filters and fuel lines clean, check filters for fluid and dirt, mixed oil and fuel issue is common, good cleaning done, change gaskets and oil and voila…good seas
Taylor is right. You are a badass!! Most people would give up. Most people would sit and stew in self pity and fear. And it’s ok to feel those things but to then pick yourself up and get to work is a special kind of person. Well done!! You are awesome!
Lauren, Great job on saving the engine. You impressed me with your resolve and stick to it, not because you are a young woman, but many seasoned cruisers would have had no clue of what to do. Simple guess as a 200 Ton Captain and 47 years working on boats and sailing the oceans, your mechanic has designed the exhaust side of the system incorrectly. Sounds like you are getting back pressure which will make it hard to start. I would have to rule out the intake side because if they messed up the siphon break that would be supper stupid and I have to give them a benefit of a doute as a courtesy. Happy to look at things if you want me to but I would need some measurements. If you like reach out, happy to help. At minimum get a different installer to give you some recommendations. I would not relay on the people who installed it at this point. Done correctly it should be near impossible to get water into the engine, should not be something you should have to keep an eye on. Don't listen to the folks saying you have a cracked block or blown head gasket, that's not remotely your problem. Reach out if you like and keep sailing. PS, my wife and I will say a little prayer for you tomorrow at church! God bless, Rick
Some valves are just not placed where they should be which would cause water problems. Or you have a Murphy on your boat.. Hope you figure this out sooner than later..🙏🙏
HI YOU DONE GREAT . I have dealt with that before sometimes I’ve seen it or the head gasket has a minor crack in it and can let water seep through the exhaust valve and then down into the oil or that a possibility to it is if there is a crack in the cylinder head back and let water in also and on some bolts if the exhaust hose heading towards the transom isn’t high enough to let water back in for when the water is coming out of the engine he’ll return and come back in after the engines been off. if you have boat US and unlimited package they will tow you a long ways at low none or at lou cost.
So sorry to hear you're still having to deal with this issue of water getting into your new engine. You definitely have some amazing mechanical skills.
@@laurenlanders you're welcome. We're just happy to see you got it running again. I worry about the lifespan of that engine after all it's been through.
I guess I missed a big thanks to the guy that helped you and his mechanic from over seas listening to the accent. I'm glad you got it going and we're able to move on. I been binge watching your channel. 🍻🍻
Sometimes these problems come about… I know it’s hard to be strong sometimes but you did the right thing and didn’t let that stubborn engine beat you. Just take your time and be easy on the engine until can get it checked at in Nassau.

You are such a BAD ASS! I've got a daughter roughly your age, that ask for help hanging pictures, and you're out there repairing diesel engines. Beyond impressed!
Keep your head up! These headaches definitely suck but unfortunately boating is full days like these. I think that’s why so many boaters are so level headed because they’ve had to develop a tolerance over the years
Hi Lauren, If engine water or coolant is mixing with engine oil you have a blown head gasket or a cracked engine block. Check manifold gaskets as well if they have water jackets and oil passages This should never happen. Where are your gloves? Nice to see you and Mako on the water sea again. Thanks for sharing.
it is what crossed my mind as soon as I saw that white mix of oil and water. It need to get fixed before it get worse. Good luck Lauren and thank you for sharing!!!
So sorry about your engine trouble- I am so impressed by your journey and abilities! Who knew about bees, right??? I’m sure you’ll fix this and be back out on new adventures!
the saltwater hose leaving the engine and going to the exhaust mixing elbow must rise a foot or two above the waterline of the boat with a vented loop at the top to prevent back flow into the engine
For the past 8 years I’ve bringing my boat, a Bristol 40, from ruin to being a beauty. I know your emotional connection to the boat. I’ll be sailing her down from Maine in the fall. You’re doing great!

God bless,
Rick
Aww this means so much to me!!! Thank you!! I will reach out in a bit possibly❤️
DUDE. You are a badass for sure! What an inspiration.
Thank you
@@laurenlanders you're welcome. We're just happy to see you got it running again. I worry about the lifespan of that engine after all it's been through.
You rock girl!
Thanks!
Things like this (and from other sailing youtube channels) is why I'm going electric engine only.
I guess I missed a big thanks to the guy that helped you and his mechanic from over seas listening to the accent. I'm glad you got it going and we're able to move on. I been binge watching your channel. 🍻🍻
Great video!
Great job congratulations
Thank you
Well done , Pain in the but BUT youll beat it - Fair winds .
Thanks!!
Great job. I hope you make some fixes to prevent this problem from happening again.
Agreed. Working on it for sure
Sometimes these problems come about… I know it’s hard to be strong sometimes but you did the right thing and didn’t let that stubborn engine beat you. Love how you celebrated with champagne and blessed the boat lol I would too. Anything to help I would try! Glad you girls are up and running again. Just take your time and be easy on the engine until can get it checked at in Nassau.
Thank you!!!!
Awesome show thank you!
Thanks for watching!
A very inspirational video, well done and good luck.
Thank you!
I wish I could have been with you on this voyage. I know these engines so well. You could have bee

Oh man its so emotionally stressful experiencing engine issues when you're are a full-time live aboard. You did great work to get your engine going again, Well done
Thank you so so much!
Great video thanks for sharing.
You do great work ! If I were you I would get that boat back to the engine installer and tell them I want a new engine one that is installed correctly
I am trying!!
I am so proud of you! You got your engine working again! Good job...
And I don't about the Soul de La Mar but you chased all my demons away with that burning thing... 😵💫❣🌴
Aw thanks! And haha
You are such a BAD ASS! I've got a daughter roughly your age, that ask for help hanging pictures, and you're out there repairing diesel engines. Beyond impressed!
An haha thanks
10.0 GENIUS IS NOW AT WORK ON THE NEW ENGINE FAILURES.
AWESOME LAUREN 🍹
ELIJAH
I AM NOT A
GEARHEAD
Keep your head up! These headaches definitely suck but unfortunately boating is full days like these. I think that’s why so many boaters are so level headed because they’ve had to develop a tolerance over the years
For sure! Thanks!
Hi Lauren,
If engine water or coolant is mixing with engine oil you have a blown head gasket or a cracked engine block. Check manifold gaskets as well if they have water jackets and oil passages
This should never happen. Where are your gloves?
Nice to see you and Mako on the water sea again. Thanks for sharing.
it is what crossed my mind as soon as I saw that white mix of oil and water. It need to get fixed before it get worse. Good luck Lauren and thank you for sharing!!!
I like the Champagne ending !
You keep calm,
but stay focused on your goal.
You're more of a tiger !
"Once a tiger, always a tiger !"
Aww
So sorry about your engine trouble- I am so impressed by your journey and abilities! Who knew about bees, right??? I’m sure you’ll fix this and be back out on new adventures!
Aw thanks!
@@laurenlanders 👋
the saltwater hose leaving the engine and going to the exhaust mixing elbow must rise a foot or two above the waterline of the boat with a vented loop at the top to prevent back flow into the engine
Thank you!!
Buy and install a water separator fuel filter asap. It is a must have item. Cheers!
I have one (:
@@laurenlanders buy a bigger one with more space for drainage.
Good episode….keep your chin up! Well done with the engine, soon enough SunPower Diesel is going to hire you! Am enjoying the Berry’s! Thx, Andrew
Thanks!
Thank you!
For the past 8 years I’ve bringing my boat, a Bristol 40, from ruin to being a beauty. I know your emotional connection to the boat.
I’ll be sailing her down from Maine in the fall.
You’re doing great!
David gets around doesn't he ! I see him everywhere !
Hahaha
