One time I was filming some friends at a spot that a lot of the Girl/Lakai/Chocolate guys were filming at as well. I felt weird that I was maybe getting in their way. I apologized to Mike Carroll about it, and he looked at me in a puzzled way and said, "What? Oh, it's whatever we're just skating". Somehow that's the coolest thing any skater has ever said to me.
We were skating LA college and this golf cart pulled up with security in it and asked if we were there filming for the video, I was wondering wtf they were talking about but just said yeah we are and they were like cool and just drove away. What we found out after we skated around the campus for a while was that they were filming the very end of Yeah Right. We didn’t want to get in the way so we went to this little area out of the way and walked up on Carroll and Scott Johnston having the talk about Scott no longer being pro for Girl…. Needless to say I felt so bad and was just like oh shit my bad guys and skated off. I’ll never forget how uncomfortable that situation felt
Great to see Mike Carroll on the show! All the stories from the late 80’s & early 90’s are very interesting! Future episodes featuring the following dudes would be epic! Pat Duffy Sean Sheffey Rick Howard Eric Koston Colin McKay Natas And more from this era please. 🙏🏻
@@TheHSIHP first ollie was in 88, turned 40 this year and still rippin!! I slammed trying to kickflip a bump to gap 2 weeks ago, finally healed up enough to go back and try again. #skate4life
Alright, alright. Carroll is definitely a guest that I've been waiting for. Methinks this episode is going to be in my top five. Congrats on 52 episodes. Here's to 52 more.
I love when the older dudes talk about stuff from back in the day cuz I remember all that stuff like it was yesterday. 32 mm Wheels, size 60 Dickies pants cut into shorts hell I even had the Mike Carroll Calvin and Hobbes board
Great Episode! second time watching and really enjoying the Girl and Lakai stories. Please get Rick Howard on the show ! would love to hear his take on all of their success. thanks guys
Thanks guys these are great! Been skating too since 95 and all these dudes have influenced alot of my youth. Kellys nollie heel with the ben davis board is one of my fav pics ever
i had 1 pair of them in black, green and silver toecap colour. they were called cosmo/cozmo. i have still have the box in my wardrobe with vhs vids from the 90,s in it. yes they were dope shoes that lasted.
You're nuts, Roger is clearly a smart dude and his skateboard knowledge is almost unparalleled. His insight and questions are a big element to the show. Surprised to hear someone say that honestly.
yes, he knows a lot. and look how he just interrupts to PROVE that he knows it. most of the time he'll cut off the guest and finish their sentence, to show that he knows that data point i left some timestamp comments here, to cite his "offenses". check em out!
I love the history lesson these shows unearth. I think the Howard grind sounds like the original funk prelude to what a lot of us knew as the Mouly grind years later. [Alex Moul]
It bums me out so much that the switch flip manny in the background almost never gets shown in its entirety, it always cuts off in the middle of it and it fucks with my OCD so hard lol.
Damn those carroll dcs are dope!!!! When i was a kid i convinced my mom to drive like 2 hours one way to the dc sale and it was already stripped with hardly anything left. I ended up getting a pair of those carrolls in like 2 sizes too big and still skated them till they were worn out!!! Tied them so tight to fit they looked super clowny but were still amazing!
Just want to say fantastic job to The Nine Club. I can't think of a better show of it's kind. Providing the links is also a really useful feature and I appreciate the hell out of it. This fuckin guy!
29:20 we were waxing curbs in 91. Used to steal candles from the West View, PA (Pittsburgh) Giant Eagle and K-Mart. They also sold Mr Zogg’s Sex Wax. But, we just used stolen candles.
I was at a Plan B demo in '93 when they were all wearing the Girl shirts. Me and my friend thought it was funny, but didn't think too much of it. Seemed liked just a few months later they publicly announced Girl. It was such a huge shock at the time because World was such a huge thing and it seemed crazy all these dudes would jump ship like that. But it was like all my favorite skaters from the World companies, so I was super hyped on Girl and Chocolate from that point on.
mUCH LOVE TO Mike . ive watced this one before, but wanted to check it out again . Mike is really a decent dude, down to earth. Also props for bringing up the philly / (east coast) switch of palmost doubling the size of wheels. . lul. . Also mentioning Matty Reason(rip) from philly/pittsburgh. . much respect. . peace, Eric
at 36:15..... Carroll talking about the 'dick flip'. That comes straight from Henry SANCHEZ maybe Kelch? , Carroll didn't seem to want to get into it. Now Jovontae Turner goes into it in great detail about it & how all these tricks had nicknames. Jovontae Turner's Nine Club episode......GREATEST THING EVER!!! EMB is in our heats. See with the hills and gnarly architecture in SF , earthquake bumps. Then having one of, if not the greatest plaza built perfectly for skating......That bread a lot of talent. Plus everyone was wanting to move to SF. I was coming up skating around around EMB'S blow up. It was insane. Never got the chance to go.
Anyone else play skate 3 whenever they listen to this? Not every time but most times.. I just skated past Mike in the game and thought that was funny.. That's all
Backside flips were more common I feel like so when the "hardflip" came out I think it was just a reference to the not so common at the time frontside 180 flips.
dudes, thank you. thank you for this. Mondays can be a bitch and you guys soften the blow. THIS Monday is particularly rough but this episode is particularly dank! so it evens out..? maybe?
When discussing Airwalks @1:16:14 think Carroll’s mixed up the Sorry and the One models. The Airwalk One were the Puma looking low-tops. The Sorry was a desert boot style that kinda compared to the Vans Chukka Boot (loved those Vans Chukkas to death). I guarantee the model of Airwalks those dudes were “hyped on” was the Jim Shoe, which were really nice leather low-tops that Koston rocked a lot in ‘93 during that transition time from 101 to Girl. 🤓 I love early skate shoe talk.
Never knew of you chris til i came across the nine club and ever sense ive been hooked on your shit youre funny as fuck and because i havent seen much skating of you every time i do see you skate i realize how fucking good you are to. Keep this shit goin c-crob
I skated a place in Toledo called Port Side in the 90's and it was all bricks with 2-3 ft ledges and lots of gaps n stairs. It was fun. But I always had much respect for the EMB crew cuz I skated through EMB one time and those bricks are rough!! I thought ours was rough!

Mac Kelly seems like a dope ass dude! Idk how I just found this episode
I wonder what kind of an answer you would get if you said that to him in the early 90's

Is Carroll referring to Primitive when speaking about putting a company together having the most rad skaters without being natural/organic?
mvmellon02
No I think he's talking about like Nike, AYC when it first started, etc. Primitive was pretty organic imo
