  • This is bitter sweet... I officially posted my 1992 Sea Ray 380 Sun Sport for sale. After 2.5 years of hard work, blood, sweat, tears, and a lot of money... The restoration project that made this channel take off is leaving the MMM family. For the longest time I thought the 380 Sun Sport would be the perfect boat for the Chesapeake Bay. And it is! But now I have my sights set on something bigger and more comfortable for cruising. AND WITH DIESELS! This is not goodbye, but see you later. My days of restoring boats is not over. I plan to purchase an inboard diesel engine sport fish once the Sea Ray sells and begin filming content of my trials and tribulations with it. For now, we celebrate the rise of this beautiful boat, priceless in my heart, and incredibly capable on the water. From its construction in Merritt Island, Florida in January of 1992, to its time on the Lake of the Ozarks, and now the Chesapeake Bay; this Sea Ray has come a long way over the years. It is affordably priced and proven to be a great boat and project for the next caring owner. Thank you for following along. You all made this possible. Here's to my 1992 Sea Ray 380 Sun Sport! And many more good times to come... $70,000 OBO.
    Welcome to Makin Motor Moves! My name is Ben and this is a channel based around all things boat and yacht restoration related. I work full time in the marine industry and when I'm not at work, I'm currently restoring my one of a kind 1992 Sea Ray 380 Sun Sport. This is my 12th boat project! From $100 boats to 60 year old relics, I started small and worked my way up. Despite my best judgement, I buy boats that need A LOT of work and fix them up myself. I grew up boating at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, went to school to become an engineer, worked at John Deere for 5 years, and then decided to give it all up to pursue my dream to work in the recreational boat industry. Now having since moved to the Chesapeake Bay area, my mission is to share with the world my love and passion for mechanics and wrenching through my marine projects all while teaching you how to enjoy boats on a budget. I hope you Like these videos and please don't forget to Subscribe! Cheers, Makin Motor Moves.

    I've thoroughly enjoyed your work on the 380... I have a 1990 370 SS . I learned things about my yacht I wouldn't have know other wise. Thanks for all the content on this restore !!!

    I enjoyed the whole series. Been landlocked in the Rockies since I left Maryland 40 years ago. Only been back a handful of times. I always said there's no way I could live there without a boat. We are from Middle River. My first job out of high school was restoring a 1957 36 foot Wheeler at the Inner Harbor Marina... it had twin 409s.

    Ben Thank you for all your great content. I thought I recognized the marina you are in and I just bought a Rinker 290 Fiesta Vee from that same marina. I knew your boat when I saw it. I would like to meet you. I am a retiring electrician wanting to do some tinkering. My boat needs a few things.

    I live very close to the beach and I'm retired. I would love to have a boat that I could stay on at times. Biggest thing is finding somewhere to dock.

      I was discussing this with someone the other day. The boat has a kitchen, head, shower, and queen bed with air conditioning. It can be lived in anytime if needed.

    The panel you have gauges on switch panel you should get wrapped with a nice gray design

    • @BoatRestorationbyBen
      @BoatRestorationbyBen  10 месяцев назад +1

      There are a lot of cool things I can do with the dash panel. Unfortunately, I’ve been using the approach. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Gauges are expensive!

      @@BoatRestorationbyBen keep the same gauges and switches. Take panel and hydrodip or wrap the metal part

    Good luck with your sale, but you might want to check out the other 380ss's that are for sale on boat trader. Right now I see a 95 for $49,999 and a 98 for $77,800. And they don't have hacked up paint jobs......

    • @BoatRestorationbyBen
      @BoatRestorationbyBen  10 месяцев назад +4

      I know the paint is my weak spot on the boat. Fortunately a nice paint job can be rectified fairly easily and won’t cost that much for the next owner. All that can be worked into the deal. Cheers!

    I say keep it you know exactly what's wrong with it and you all that's right with it! It's a known quantity....my $5K boat is now my $29K boat so I feel your pain. We can't sell them for what we've spent....and you don't know what $$$$ problems your next boat will have. Keep it or if you can get 70% or more than what you he ave in it sell it. If you can't get 70% or better then keep it!

    What went wrong with the outdrive? Was it just that coupler that split or was it the gears?

    • @BoatRestorationbyBen
      @BoatRestorationbyBen  10 месяцев назад +1

      Coupler split this time but I did not want to risk having gear failure. Previously, I had an upper gear failure.

    How do you decide cruising speed? 4000 rpms are too much for those Mercs? Thanks

    • @BoatRestorationbyBen
      @BoatRestorationbyBen  7 месяцев назад +1

      Cruising RPM for those 7.4L MPIs is between 3000 and 3500. WOT is 4200-4600. I have her pitched so the WOT RPM is 4200. I don’t take her over 3800 but to prove she can do it. My cruising speed is 30-36 mph. Not bad!
