Spent a week in Bogotá and three weeks in Medellin just before the pandemic started. Was planning on going to Cartagena after a week in Medellin but I met too many paisa friends and couldn’t leave Medellin. Colombians are awesome people. Best trip of my life. Can’t wait to go back to for longer and travel around the country more. It’s my kind of place even though I’m Eastern European ❤️💙💛

I go to Cartagena a lot and many of the tips on here are at best misleading. One, emeralds are NOT a good buy in the city - the visiting cruise ships provide easy pickings for the shops as shoppers know very little about the stones. Two, bartering only works in the streets for cheap stuff and there is little of that you will want to buy. Three, most of Cartagena’s beaches are poor and you will be continually pestered. Bring a copy of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and then have drink in the bar at the Santa Clara hotel (there is an entrance opposite to the Cevicheria that Anthony Bourdain visited in No Reservations) the building of which the book is based on when it was a convent. Baru is the up and coming location in Cartagena, but there is a lot of development at the moment.
