  • APRIL to JUNE is the time for beautiful bluebells. Learn how to identify native bluebells, Spanish bluebells or the hybrid of both. When the introduced Spanish bluebell grows close to populations of native bluebell in Ireland, they will cross pollinate and produce fertile hybrids. It is currently not known how widespread the hybrid is in Ireland and what the long term impacts on our native bluebell will be. Report your bluebell sightings to either www.biology.ie/ or www.biodiversityireland.ie/

Ever since I first found out about the Spanish bluebells, I've realised they and the hybrids are everywhere! Makes it a joy to see the odd English on tucked away in the corners of gardens though. They appear to be doing well in the woods still where they dominate or are far away from gardens.

I recently made video myself visiting my local bluebell woods, you really helped me identify which species they were, thank you! I didn't realise the differences were so great, seeing them like this makes them look quite distinctive.

Thank you for your very interesting and instructive video. I'll be much more aware of the differences when next in a bluebell wood.

What about the white bluebells? Do the Spanish bluebells produce white flowers too?

I have a good question: what if your had a hybrid native bluebell and back cross it with a pure native bluebell, that over time the spanish gene will fade and the native will be more dominate?

As a former Briton living in Canada I do miss the sight of bluebells. Is there a difference between Irish and English and Northern European bluebells?

Enjoyed learning the difference between the bluebells. Here in South Carolina the Spanish Bluebells are in bloom right now. I will need to see if they happen to have any scent at all. I believe there are pink and white cultivars of the Spanish Bluebell.🌸 I assume there is a difference in heat toleration between the species?
