When playing Platinum, it felt like grass was just as rare as fire for anything that you could get pre-nationaldex. For fire, I remember you could get the starters and Ponyta before the first gym, Houndoor before the fourth gym, and Magmar before the fifth. Whereas Roselia and Cherub were the only two grass mons besides the Turtwig line, and I think Roserade is the only good one besides Torterra

On one hand, ice types are awful defensively so you’d think we’d get more ice types earlier. On the other hand, ice is an amazing offensive type so it kinda makes sense we get them later. I feel like mid-game is the perfect spot for players to get some ice type options.

  • @CodenameJD
    @CodenameJD 6 месяцев назад +10

It's also worth considering what the overall balance of the Pokédex is as generations go by, which type is rarest across the whole Pokédex in each gen. Naturally, that stays the same in the first two generations, though by gen III Ghost has fallen behind, as Dragon got more additions then. These days, Ice is the least common overall - an impressive feat considering Fairy was introduced five generations later, even if 22 Pokémon did have their types changed when it was introduced.
All in all, Ice definitely feels like the hardest type to encounter in most games, reflecting that overall obscurity. It's hurt a lot by being difficult to encounter until late in the game, particularly for new Pokémon. You mentioned Crabrawler being common, but in Sun & Moon the area to evolve it is literally Victory Road, meaning you can't get the only new non-regional variant Ice type until the end game. It's rare enough that the Coastal dex in Kalos didn't have a single Ice type, the only time in the main series that a Pokédex has missed a type that existed at that time.

I'll never get why they constantly make ice types so late-game.
Gen 1 was tragic anyways. Gen 2? After the seventh gym. Gen 3? Same. Gen 4? 7th gym. Gen 5? 7th gym I think? Gen 6? Frost Cave is after the sixth gym iirc. Gen 7? Tapu Village iirc. Gen 8? Icirrus is super late again (but the wild area at least mitigated it a bit). Gen 9? Yup, endgame area.
There is a reason rock is nearly always early game when normal type moves are used - it's otherwise shit defensively. While being worse defensively, ice type gym leaders are always late-game, I think there's not a single ice type gym leader who's earlier than... slot 7? Or E4?

And I actually appreciate the lack of fire types in Gen 4. Sinnoh is a colder region. It makes sense that fire types aren't suited for the region.... so it's lacking....
Also, it should be noted that while a type is rare for a generation, it doesn't mean it's rare for a region.

Something interesting to consider is that part of the reason Dragon doesn't consistantly land bottom is that every generation has at least 1 dragon type line and from gen 2 fowards we get a trend of getting a decent amount of legendary dragons.
Hoenn does have a fair bit of dragons between 6 non-legendary and 3 legendary dragons.
In Gen 4 and gen 5 dragon escapes being the lowest because of the legendary trio of dragons putting it over the top.
Gen 6 have a decent amount of dragons (and it's really hard to beat a 2 as the lowest)
Gen 7 escapes being the lowest type because of Necrozma and the 2 dragon type Ultra Beasts
Gen 8 and 9 added a lot of Dragons in both games, but even then there are a good amount of legendary dragons. In SwSh it does add 2 legendary dragons and SV adds 2 legendary dragons + 4 paradox dragons.

It's amazing how Gen 2 didn't wanna let you get their new Pokémon and Gen 4 didn't wanna give you their new Evolutions.
And I really wish there were more Rock Types in the wild in Gen 4. Such nice diversity almost everywhere but the second you walk into a cave you better be excited to see Onix and Graveler.

Yeah Gen 2 in particular fumbled the new pokemon so badly. They tend to be weak or inaccessible until much later in the game. Most the trainers dont use them very much either, so their presence is hardly noticed in-game.

i feel like the ground type is sort of underrepresented in ‘newly designed’ pokemon the last decade or so.
if we are not counting regional variants, convergent evolutions, paradox pokemon and legendaries, so just regular, newly introduced, evolutionary families one can encounter into the wild, the only new ground types we have gotten since gen 6 are Diggersby, the Mudsdale family, the Palossand family and the Sanaconda family. Paldea legit did not introduce a single ground type that is not in some shape or form related to an already existing Pokemon line except for Ting-Lu.
it’s not that big of a deal, but i always wonder what the reason for this might be! I hope we get a ground/fairy Pokemon next gen, cause that is the only typing ground has not yet been paired with.

@@edgargaebolg9307 yeah, GameFreak seems a bit ‘confused’ when it comes to the rock and ground types, i still have no idea why they decided to make runerigus ground/ghost instead of rock/ghost, and why galarian corsola/cursola and houndSTONE are all pure ghost types.
I doubt they will ever do this, but i feel like if they are gonna adjust the types in the type chart ever again someday, rock and grounds could easily be merged into one type and they can name it the ‘terra type’ or something like that, but that would put us on an odd number of types again, so that would probably never happen. I do hope both rock and ground get some more love in the upcoming generations!

If you count re-typings due to new types being introduced, the rarest type of all is Dark-types in Kanto. The amount of Dark-type Pokemon native to Kanto is zero, zilch, nada. The only Dark-type Gen I Pokemon are regional variants introduced in Gen VII, which are native to Alola. The definition of a technicality, I know, but still relevant to this topic.

I feel you erred by skipping Hisui. Maybe you're right that it should be counted separately from Galar despite being from the same generation, but the title of the video explicitly says rarest types by generation, not rarest types by region. Hisui is part of the 8th gen and should thus be counted with it- which is the simplest way. Even if it _was_ by region, it should be counted as an extension of Sinnoh- though that might be a little tricky since none of the "new" Pokémon are new evolutionary lines, they were all regional variants and regional evolutions of Pokémon not native to Sinnoh in gen 4 (with the exception of Sneasel). Point is, it either needs to be counted as part of Sinnoh or part of gen 8, has to be one or the other, you can't do neither. Maybe Hisui should just be counted as its own region, past gen carryovers and new mon just lumped together in the total. And when Legends Z-A comes out you're going to have to account for it too.
