He didn’t want to be called Barry, and it reminded him of bad times, so he changed it to Arthur, after his old driver on his old railway, and is now the railway’s dedicated rescue engine, and is always out rescuing breakdowns and things like that.
For note, your head-canon suggests that the Barry is a 2mt tank engine and is numbered 78010. However, that number was used for a class 2 Tender engine built in 1951. The class 2’s are practically very similar to the Ivatt 2mt tender engine. The only thing you’d need to change about your head canon is the number.

Sir Charles named the engine Barry, after the scrapyard where he was found, and the name stuck. Barry enjoyed his new life on Sodor and still operates today on the Norramby Branch Line.
I wonder if barry inspired the creation of arthur and arthur was made as an apology to christopher for him never getting a chance to make the engine he wanted.
The reason everyone assumed Barry was a tender engine is that it was said he was a 2MT from Barry Island Scrapyard, and only the tender engine 2MTs were at Barry in real life.
I like to think Barry was a tender engine, but when he was in service he used to have a tender, but when saved was rebuilt into a tank engine by the enthusiasts who had enough fund to afford the steel to make the tanks and bunker and of course the booeys wheels to make him a 2-6-2T

here’s my idea for a story introducing barry. bear decides to go to other railway in search of a new engine he comes across a tank/tender engine that’s due for scrap however bear manages to sneaks him out and brings to sodor where he becomes an official member and is given a new name barry. before you ask yes this story acts as a rewrite to rusty to the rescue.
My HC for Barry: Barry is 78059. (The 2-6-0 that is being turned into the 2-6-2T) He first came to sodor in 1964, and worked there untill 2009, when Barry went to the bluebell to be converted into 84013
My headcanon is that Arthur IS Barry! Here's how I think it went: Barry was one of the 2MT tender engines built for British Railways and ran mostly in the Midlands, so he rarely saw the sea. Upon withdrawal from service, Barry was sent to Barry Island scrapyard and was there for a few years. By the time the fat controller visited the scrapyard in search of a steam engine for his railway, Barry's tender was already cut up. The fat controller took pity on Barry and bought him, converting him to a 2MT tank engine at Crovans Gate Works. The name "Barry" became painful for the engine due to the traumatizing nature of the scrapyard so he was allowed to pick a new name, that being Arthur. Arthur would be painted in an LMS Maroon, a colour he'd never had a chance to wear and had a liking for. And the rest is as it was in Series 7 and beyond!
I personally prefer the BR Standard Class 2 compared to Arthur's class for Barry. The BR Standard classes were never touched on and benefited heavily from Woodham Brothers.
Personally, I would have Barry start off as an LMS Ivatt Class 2MT 2-6-2T, and later be rebuilt into a BR Standard Class 2 2-6-0 after a nasty accident.
I think barry the rescue engine was actually going to be a to friend character. If he was a 2mt tank engine, he was probably replaced by bell, which is a 2mt rescue tank engine.
The whole “tender or no tender” thing reminds me of Bertram, supposed to be a tank engine but the show’s budget made him a darker brown Duke and thus a tender engine.
Yeah Bertram and Barry have somewhat the same backstory in my head canon. Both starting out as tank engines but then being converted into tender engines.
Just so you know, none of those engines whose numbers begin with "78" are either Ivatt or LMS. They were designed by Robert Riddles for British Railways in 1952, 4 years after the LMS ceased existing!

For some reason yes it is confirmed he's like a tank engine LMS Ivatt class II people got it mixed up with the tender engine class and decided it looked better, I can agree because the actual tank engine design for barry isnt confirmed yet like the wellsworth and suddery engines and will never be.

That’s become a bit of a myth in the fandom. There were two Ivatt 2MT tanks at Barry and both are preserved.
