Video shot and edited by Jeff Lange.
This Is INSANELY COOL. It's crazy how different the old track looks from the current one
They had to replace the track because the onboard audio system added a ton of extra weight to the ride vehicles, which in turn caused the track and supports to wear out.
@@andrewschannel4259 that's very interesting
did they change the track layout or did it stay the same like what they did with the hulk coaster at IOA
@@DrCheeseBalls The track layout is the same as it was before, but the transitions were improved.
@@andrewschannel4259 another thing is that they made the trim brakes hit much less hard, so the ride goes much faster at 1:25 for example.
I miss this sountrack version so much! My childhood thanks you!
I wasn't expecting to see the voice actor for foxy here
WOW!!! What makes this video even more unique apart from the lights being on is that the onboard soundtrack is working! INCREDIBLE!!!!
EDIT: What I find even more fascinating about this video is that starting at 2:20, you can hear the onboard soundtrack begin to compensate for the slower than normal speed of the ride vehicle.
Ikr, I've never even heard that part of the music before. This whole SOBAT system that Disney developed by dividing the track into "sections" that have their own seperately recorded music-parts is absolutely genius. The music will stay in sync no matter what. The only problem with the early versions of this technology is that (as you already said) it was quite unreliable. Seems like they fixed it's reliability issues with the 2003 refurb, but sadly they got rid of this song and replaced it with a more generic one. The same reliability issues plagued Space Mountain in Paris. I had countless occasions where the music was only half working or even not working at all.
I don't know if they fixed it with the new trains it got in 2017.
@@Scoaster86 Yes. There's a pov of this Space Mountain on its final day of operation and the soundtrack wasn't working. You'd be extremely lucky to get a ride with the sound system working in 2003.
@@andrewschannel4259 this was typically because the batteries hardly ever met with the charging pins on the block sections that were intended to charge them overnight after park close
@@Theme_parchive I knew about that, but thanks.
I hope they bring back the soundtrack for one of its anniversaries one day.
Same
I'm lucky enough to have gotten to ride this version with my brother when we were teens - after 10 years of riding Space Mountain every summer on my family's annual vacation, suddenly having this awesome music synced to the track was incredibly exciting. It made for some special memories in the last couple of years we took trips down there.
Cool seeing where the Rocket Rods/Peoplemover track is as well as the queue line.
If you look closely, you might see the windows of the Peoplemover/Rocket Rods ride. I never knew where I could see it since there's barely any footage of Space Mountain Disneyland POVs or Peoplemover POVs where the lights are on and you can see the track.
Where are they?
@@elevatoralarmcoasterandarc1214 Around 1:40.
This ride was by far the best one out of the entire park on the day of this visit. I remember looking around to see how they pulled off those effects where it made you feel as if you were in space.
As I was looking around, I noticed some things like ladders or tools on the ground,Among other things when I turn to face opposite of the direction the ride was going.
Holy cow!!! This is the greatest surprise ever uploaded onto RUclips! Did you tape this video, or where did you find this gem!?
Jeff Lange recorded it, as he said in the desctiption.
As a coaster nerd, I notice the new track is almost a completely different style. Whereas this has a more triangular shape much like an intamin, but currently the track inside the main section has a box spine much like a B&M. Very interesting
The manufacturer is Dynamic Structures, although other sources claim that they only did the retracking and the ride was made in-house (could be true though)
Hellacia I know. I just find interesting that they aped 2 completely different track styles between the original and the retrack
@@rct3isepic They replaced all the track except the track in the station, maintenance area, tunnels, and lift hills.
@@rct3isepic Looked on rcdb, yeah you are right. The spine however is a bit taller and has ridges on it. Crossties also do not curve inwards.
@@hellacia8151 The original manufacturer of the Disneyland SM was Vekoma, I believe.
I'll tell you this, that old spinning tunnel at the end looks better than the current finale tunnel in my opinion. Great footage!
I was very lucky to ride this with the lights on @ Disneyland back in 95'
At the Cast Members Behind the Scenes! 💫 those were times I wished never ended💫
@Jorge Jaime ?? Huh??
Riding space mountain with the lights on is scary just because of close the track is . It's still my favorite coaster at magic kingdom. I'm so glad I'm a pass holder and live like a hour away from Disney world 😍.
When my mom used to go there, she told me recently that you were so close to the track above you. I say the one at Disney World looks more fun than the one at Disneyland.
@@Laserashton that is true. I forgot I even made this comment
This is the best space mountain soundtrack ever
From the 90s.
Lights on just shows how really slow this ride is. It doesn't even go 30 mph, and yet it feels so much faster in the dark.
actually this one goes a bit over 30, but the Disney World version goes 28.
This is actually an unusually slow pov - if you didn't notice, the slugging train caused the extended parts of the music to kick in until the train entered the right block zones. If it runs faster than usual (usually at night), then it starts skipping ahead to different parts
I’ve never been on it with the lights on before! I don’t think I went on it with this old theme prior to 2005, except once I was so young that I vaguely remember
Wow! This is a cool surprise!
I am glad you think so!
I was fortunate enough to ride this in 96.
Of course.
Went on this ride yesterday. Last time I went on it was back in the 90s. Totally different ride, so fast and violent it was unpleasant. Your video reminds me why I used to like this ride, and I wish I knew how much faster it was before I convinced my family to try it yesterday.
The speed shouldnt have changed during the 2005 renovation, but it may have accidentally happened a small amount when they re-profiled some of the turns and removed some bumps. other than that I have heard that the old one is jankier and more intense, but I guess it just depends on who you ask. I find the current one perfectly fine, but I haven’t ridden the original, so im unsure how it compares.
I didn’t realize until now that space mountain used to have block audio for the end! 2:19
Me either! I remember being so fascinated by that part when I first saw this video!
@@andrewschannel4259Same!
Yeah this train in particular was CRAWLING. Most likely an early morning ride that was empty.
Great thank you!
Track looks smooth for it's time, no weird jarring transitions, unless someone wants to disprove me and say it was rough.
You do great videos
What sucks about this ride is that it was closed when I visited this park for the first and only time in 2014, and it's my favorite ride at the Magic Kingdom. I hope that's not going to be the case next time I go there (whenever that will be).
If this was 1998 then...
Oh no it was brown Space Mountain!
What do I see on the Ceiling at top of Space Mountain is that water damage or Concrete?
Looks like humidity
that is probably just concrete, as the lines match up quite well with the support beams on the top of the building
I remember a second lift hill once you get inside the structure on the old ride that doesn’t seem to be there in the modern FPV videos. I couldn’t tell from this one. Am I imagining things?
Technically 3 altogether and they're all there old and new.... 1. after you leave loading 2. The spinning tunnel and 3. as you leave the tunnel a smaller one where (on the current soundtrack) the countdown starts
They should use this audio for a while for space mountains 50th anniversary next year
Possibly.
I miss this version of the ride
We all agree.
So what year was this new design track put in? I honestly haven’t been in years! Exactly last time i went was when the cars ride and i belive little mermaid? was under construction in California adventure ! I’m lucky enough to been a handful of times! I reamber back as a kid in the 90s the submarine ride and watching that show with bears!
The current track was added from 2003-2005 after the on-ride audio system added in 1996 put extra weight on the trains that was unaccounted for and overstressed the ride’s track and structure, leading to the ride’s 2003 refurbishment. This also replaced the support structure, trains, along with the ending tunnel & other effects. This refurb also removed the queue windows from which you could view the ride from.
@@olileoli2788 In addition, had Disneyland allowed Space Mountain to operate any longer, a complete structural failure would've occurred.
You didn’t ask to ride SM with the lights on did you?
Let's see if it's right.
I miss the old version of the ride
Did the just copy the original when they did the retrack? Because it would be cool if they brought this song back
Yep, it's the same layout, but with improved banking/transitions.
Yup, just reprofiled with computers and laser cut to perfection. This thing is still glass smooth, and this refurb is almost 20 years old.
[Spays Mountain] Nary a hill.
Ok this has bugged me for a long time: what was the effect after the first lift even supposed to be? its too dark in all the videos for me to tell.
Comets flying past you
Wish I rode this one🫤
Costco Mountain.
What does that mean?
