  • As another Premier League season comes to an end, a familiar story unfolds - Manchester City, Premier League champions. Elsewhere, Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town head straight back down to the Championship - with a record low points total.
    So with each passing season - is the Premier League becoming more of a closed shop at the top and more difficult than ever to survive at the bottom? In this week's episode of Three Up Front, Simon, Graeme and Troy sit down to discuss Manchester City's monopolisation of the top flight whilst looking at the struggles smaller clubs face when coming up from the Championship.

    All 3 clubs who were promoted the previous season stayed up. I didn't hear anyone at that time jumping to the conclusion that it was getting easier to stay up. Yet one year later, all 3 promoted clubs are relegated for the first time in 24 years, and it's suddenly a cause for concern. It takes more than 1 season for a trend to emerge.

    2) Troy will call United "Man Yoo"
    3) Simon will say spurs v Newcastle in Australia is completely fine and overpaid footballers should do as they're bladdy well told. Then in a few weeks he'll slag the same players off for looking lethargic at the Euros

    Was there this much belly-aching about winning in the PL when MU won 7 of the first 9 seasons including a Treble and a 3-peat? Or in the first 20yrs of the PL, MU won 13 of them or 65% of the PL? OR when LFC was running English top flight in the 1970s and 80s?
    Remember, during those times, both LFC and MU were, on the whole, outspending their competition 2x and in some seasons, as much as 3x which was lauded and applauded by the fans and the media. Ironically, they'd all have been in major breach of today's FFP standards.

    When people say City buy all the best players is wrong, Aka wasn’t the best CB but has been coached to be a top CB, KDB was loaned out and sold and came to City and was coached, Sterling wasn’t the finished article when he went there but was coached to be a decent PL goal scorer. Players that they buy other big teams in the league can go for them and get them because they aren’t coming from major teams In Europe. Think you will find more kids in the developing world wearing uniforms like Chelsea now than Man U. The fact is since football on television has been introduced to Africa, Asia, Middle East etc, none of the legacy teams have been winning. So there are a few Arsenal fans , but more Liverpool and Chelsea as these are the winners that they had seen and the young have grown up with.

      Wait until they have their titles stripped. Anything less than that will cause absolute uproar in the Prem. This is a simple money vs ethics situation and whilst there is a decent chance the Prem cave in to their sponsors and TV rights depreciation fears, this is the opportunity to give FFP some actual merit. Newcastle, Utd, Liverpool etc will be leaning on the Prem hard and Everton/Forest will be rubbing their hands with anticipation at the civil case if City walk away from the 115.

    I don't think City are monopolising the league yet. Yes they've won 6 of the last 7 titles, but 3 of them went down to the last game of the season. It's not as if they are running away with the title every season, like Bayern did for years in Germany.

Great fun watching Ramos get sent off in front of the City end 😀. Keep up the goodwork lads

  • @shoji-josuzuki1641

    As long as teams are pushing City to the last game of the season, it's not a monopoly.
    If City were winning by a large margin every season then yes it would be.
    It's down to the other teams to pull their finger out and do more though.
    I'm not saying I expect multiple teams to challenge for the title, but in 2 games a season each and every team has the ability to try and stop City and not just roll over.
    So it's not just down to the Arsenal's and Liverpool's to make it competitive, it's down to every team to have an impact on the title race

    • @user-si3rc4ut8s
      @user-si3rc4ut8s Месяц назад +1

      @shoji-josuzuki1641 Месяц назад +1

      @@user-si3rc4ut8s Arsenal were very close to winning the league this season and they definitely don't have a complete team yet.
      Liverpool dropped off the pace a few weeks earlier, but had a new midfield, their attack didn't gel towards the end and they had to play youngsters too
      Chelsea, United and Spurs all had bad seasons
      If all those teams improve slightly it will make a big difference.
      As for the other teams in the league, all they need to do is find a way to turn a loss against City into a draw, or a draw into a win and it will make a huge difference to the title race.
      Easier said than done, but people act like it was down to Arsenal to stop City, when really it was down to the entire league.

    Honestly, championship teams who want to establish themselves in the premier league need to win promotion by playing defensive football. That way, they are already prepared and comfortable for what they MUST do in the premier league. When championship teams come up playing attacking football, they all sink pathetically back down when they get slapped around 5-1 every week in the prem.

    The reason why Liverpool did not win a fourth league title in a row in 1984-1985 is threefold obviously Everton got stronger compared to what they were two or three seasons previously, Graeme Souness signing for Sampdoria in 1984 after the European Cup Final never playing a match again afterwards for Liverpool and also Ian Rush being injured for the first ten league games after the Charity Shield at Wembley in the August.
