@Jessica Fawkes it's actually one of the main sirens that you hear when they leave it on and getting somewhere. it is also designed into a lot of gates to "hear" a yelp siren to open automatically without a remote
Im an ambulance driver. We also have a yelp button. Its not for donut shops though, its for diners.

The front cab is actually quite different from regular Explorers in that the Interceptor is the only trim available with shift on the column and not in a center console. It allows the outfitters to install law enforcement center consoles.

I read it online, it's also for easy shifting when in case the cops need to get away quickly, cus most cops are used to the older cars with Column shifters, like it's muscle memory for them.
I watched this video when it came out four years ago, and I fell in love with the idea of owning a retired cruiser. Mostly because of both the structural and inherited safety of the vehicle, and the heavier duty suspension/brakes, though the zoomies were a bonus.
One week ago to the day of writing this, I managed to make it happen with a rare gem of a retired cruiser. It's four years old, with less than 79k miles on it. This is odd because most jurisdictions retire the vehicles between 150k-180k miles, so you'd see them hit the market at 6-8 years old at the soonest. This one had been salvaged out of service by insurance after it sat through a big hail storm.
It gets better
The used car dealer decided to have a little fun. He pulled the bigger dents out, and then coated the entire body with OD green rhino lining. Hail and rocks won't be a problem anytime soon.
Then he installed a 3"spacer lift, aftermarket rims, and aggressive looking off-road tires. If it had been a true suspension lift then it probably wouldn't be as squirrelly on tighter turns, but overall the unit is absolutely amazing!
If anyone has any questions that the video didn't cover, definitely let me know. I'll start with an answer you didn't know you needed: you can't sync your phone to a retired explorer interceptor. They removed that feature from the menu at the factory. I heard there is a mechanic who figured out how to do it but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. The alternative is to get the computer reprogrammed at the dealer, but it converts the shift patterns back to a civilian model (no more zoomies)

Does anyone know the percentage of power getting delivered to the front vs the back in one of these things? It ALMOST feels like a 50/50 split based on how it handles. Also, there are no controls for the AWD system, and it feels like it's always engaged. None of that automatic nonsense.
I don't know if it's because of the tires or the power delivery system, but this thing is absolutely terrifying to drive on dirt roads. I don't mean "Hell yeah man, munch the gas and let's GOOOOO!!" No, it's not that. At anything higher than 60 mph it starts acting like it's hydroplaning, and you can literally slide off the side of the road while pointing straight ahead. Or the back end will grab something and send the front in a different direction. Exercise caution

Ford actually put a ton of good research into these to really make a vehicle that fits the needs of Law Enforcement.
One major thing most companies wouldn't think about? They put in a column shorter because that's what a lot of gear is made for.
Two of the most important things for police vehicles aren't exciting but important: Good Cooling to handle lots of idling and good alternator to run all the lights, radio and equipment.

Here in San Antonio, I've seen cars pulled over by Burgundy unmarked Explorers, the usual Chargers, and even an unmarked MUSTANG. The city traffic police is also slick in that the traffic enforcement-specific Explorers don't have a top light bar(although the sides are marked) so you can't tell from far away.

I have the sedan version of this and I love it. I needed safety, full size, AWD and power, on a tight budget. It's insane how cheap these things are if you shop around, just be careful about maintenance and do research.

I will give you real world results. I am involved with fleet services for a Police Department and we have mostly 2014-2019 Ford Explorers with the N/A 3.7L motor.
Con's:
Front Control arm's need replacement at about 45k miles.
Water pump seal failure has destroyed 4 low mileage motors in our fleet
Door panels are absolute garbage.
Several Rack and Pinion's have been replaced on low mileage rmp's at a cost of $1300 for the part alone.
The vented HD rotors are not enough for this package, constantly being replaced due to warping.
NO Battery voltage protector from factory (Tahoe's have them)
No dual battery option.
Dumbest water pump design in history.
Pro's:
We have rmp's with over 12000 idle hours and over 100k miles, they do not use a drop of oil.
Solid A/C and Heat performance
AWD is very capable with the right tires.
The 3.7L is one of the best engines Ford has ever built.
how would you rate its durability for a personal vehicle then ?
I forgot what the problem was but a lot seemed to had a malfunction were it governed the speed so you could only limp back home like 30 mph. Problem seemed to affect so many ,parts were back ordered a couple weeks. 2 different ones we had went down same time with less than 3k miles on them.

Eric Espenshade On these engines, the water pump would begin to leak at >75K miles because of its poor design. It’s housed in a hard to reach spot in the engine and if it goes undetected, it can cause major damage. It’s an almost 2K fix with labor, I have this engine in my Taurus Police Interceptor, department had to replace it at 80K along with my serpentine belt I’m pretty sure
whoever is wondering about the 3.7 V6 it has 305 hp at 6,500 rpm and 285 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm.

You can outrun the radio. Few years back a Hellcat outran every unit in pursuit, including the police and news helicopters, and drove so quickly (180mph+) that the radio couldn’t mobilize units fast enough to track where the car was lol

I recently got to install all the equipment on one of these and found out that the entire floor pan is hardened steel along with the pillars. Pretty cool.
I used to work on these cars and there’s a couple tell tale signs to know if that’s a cop next to you, or just a civilian in an explorer, the same thing is true for the impalas, they have special antennas and aftermarket equipment on the outside that gives it away 9 times out of 10.

@Chuck Holmes did not know Chevy had a 3.0 v6. New they had a strong 3.6 v6 with weird exhaust manifolds. But chevy,Dodge and Ford stepped up their v6 game a lot these past few years. I would still take the rwd Ford 3.7 v6 first than the Chevy red 3.6 than the unreliable but quick Dodge pinstar v6 lol.

You had pretty much the exact same reaction when I got to sit in a Ford police interceptor utility, it was doing an American Legion law enforcement career Academy summer camp which is one week of being trained like you’re at a one-week version of a police academy. One of them was high risk traffic stops and I got to sit in one and it was awesome.
Also I got to practice actually arresting someone. The later someone had actually broken into the cam illegally and I was actually the one who put them under arrest.

I drive a 3rd gen explorer, I'm not as fast as the interceptor but I can verify that the explorer chassis is pretty great. Limited slip front and rear differentials from the factory means pretty good handling and acceleration, and they're pretty solid as far as getting into accidents
I have a 1997 Mountaineer with all wheel drive and a Cobra 5.0L. The only change I've made is two 80mm turbochargers, good luck catching me. I do run grudge matches all the time because a lot of people are holding a grudge against my car and me. It is very profitable.
I love when I get to work on new Ford Explorers. I’ll make a U turn maneuver just to feel what it’s like to strike fear in mankind.

I just recently bought a 2013 Police Interceptor SUV and its built like a Sherman tank, it still has low mileage, a clean car fax report and was well maintained. I need to add a center arm rest console in the middle and remove the big ass tool box from the back. Touch up a couple places on the very front edge of the hood...probably add a black decal IDK as of yet. 3.7 v6 with power. Not sure what the actual HP really is. I read anywhere from 310 up to 350. I'll be getting to know mine as the days and weeks go by but it def is built much more rugged than the normal SUV.

I drove a 2016 interceptor utility on patrol for a few years and enjoys the AWD, but had a ton of problems out of that car. Then got in a 2015 Tahoe which was a BEAST. Much more reliable and that 5.3 took me to 138mph on those cold nights. Much faster 0-60 as well. Now driving a 2024 Tahoe and I don’t like it nearly as much as my 2015. The 10 speed transmission drains that motor

I've worked on police interceptors top to bottom bumper to bumper. I can honestly say a majority of detectives and officers don't like the vehicle. Especially in rain and snow. Officer's like them in dry sunny weather of course but put them in weather states and you'll see interceptors on the side of the roads. Trust me I've pulled radios and equipment from wrecked interceptors and that's a chore. Love the channel.

too bad Ford isn’t producing FPIS’ anymore, loved patrolling in them. my department still uses them as a main patrol car (along with 13 and 18 FPIU’) but I got a charger after my Taurus broke down and was scrapped since maintenance would be too much for a 2012 FPIS.

The ELS package they equipped that FIPU with looks like the LAPD ELS Package, also, the nick name for that light bar is Valor.
In detroit they use explorers , chargers, taurus, Tahoe's, wbody impalas 9c1, caprice PPV's n Durangos for k-9. My fav is of course crown victoria (last gen).

I own a 2016. Best car I have ever owned, hands down. spent $10k on ebay.This includes any of my M cars, my hopped up jeep, drop drop Z M, etc. This vehicle is 3.7 L V6 Turbo, lowered, upgraded everything, including kevlar bullet proof door panels. Haul people, luggage, etc, super fast 400 HP, nimble, and AWD. Also take ethanol and 87 gas which is a big deal when you consider the only negative, if there is one, is that you get about 14.7 MPG combined. GREAT highway car. Drive up fast on anyone camping in the left lane and they instantly move over. Funny how quick they are reminded of the move over law when they think you are a cop.
