    NOOOOO not the impact! I did a steering wheel swap on my M3 and had a hell of a time as well...but have to use a long breaker bar for leverage!!

      You can use a impact on it just use the right damn socket no standard sae sockets metric sockets. Hell even the factory installers used a impact driver with lock tight on that bolt.

      It helps to use a good quality precision socket of the correct size, plus, if you ever noticed, impact specific sockets are usually carbonized when they are forged, which makes them stiffer, and less likely to deform.
      As well as the fact some people would argue the carbonized finish provides more friction over a chrome finish, making slippage/ rounding off less likely.

      X Rozip everyone makes mistakes. It’s not the mistakes that matter much though, it’s how one handles the mistakes and what one learns from them that really counts

      For leverage slide a pipe over your ratchet that will increase your strength to loosen the bolt

    No that wasnt the right socket. SAE, Standard American, is used on American cars, sometimes not even. Metric (MM) IS used on every other car. You used a 5/8" socket, should be a 13-15mm I'm not exactly sure. You should've used metric

    Dont forget that bolt is one time use. If you remove it u have to replace it.

    metric bolt not a standard. That's why it stripped. Also a breaker bar with a 6" extension would help. It's likely got blue thread lock on it

    Mike, as a carpenter I can do all sorts of home renovations. You remind me much like myself when I try to do some sort of small modification or simple maintenance on any of my vehicles or ATVs. I can sense your frustration.

    I’ve been there with the airbag issue. Took me forever to put back on. I wonder if the bolt is left handed threads? O well we live and learn. Worth the content for someone else that’s about to f-up😂👍🏽

    I feel the pain, I did the same to a bolt holding my touchscreen in my fusion. My sync 3 system went bad 10 days out of warranty and rather than pay them a grand to fix it I bought a salvage part installed it myself

    I have successfully pulled mine off with both, an impact and also once in a pinch with a breaker bar, the latter being surprisingly easier than the impact.

    They make special "Easy-Outs" for stripped bolt heads. Use one of those and a longer breaker bar for added leverage. also turn the wheel to lock so you don't need to hold it.

    It’s all great. I’ve been working a bit on a Volvo S60R. I didn’t hear any real bad language and you didn’t toss the socket in the road or thru your garage door. So it’s all good. Live and learn. You should try a metric socket next? Hoping for a video of the fix.

    TIS manuals are online. When you remove the clock spring, you will have to reset the DME fault it will throw. Good luck.

    A tip for not shutting the boot/trunk when the battery is disconnected, I leave a bit of cardboard in the back and place it over the latch/lock bit so the lid doesn't accidentally slam shut!

    I replaced the same steering wheel on my E46 330i ZSP. The hardest part for me was getting the airbag out.

    I removed my steering wheel on my M3 and the bolt is threaded backwards. You are actually over tightening the bolt. Lefty loosey does not apply in this situation.

    German cars use Metric bolts! LOL. Get some Irwin Bolt Grip sockets on it if the correct sized 6 point metric socket doesn’t work.

    That bolt still has plenty of shape left to it. But you do want the exact sized socket for it. The impact wrench is fine too; there's actually less chance of bolt breakage with an impact.

    If you ever have to take the back seat out again, you can try fishing the seatbelt buckle through the hole in the seat clicking it into the clasp and then pulling the whole thing back through.
