    58:00 The reason why we like to watch Doug so much is because the format makes you show the real ownership of an un obtain able car (for a lot of us anyway). And through him, we see what it would like to actually own a car. The quirks and features are known only to owners. And that contributes to the momentary ownership experience

    • @kinggrantking
      @kinggrantking 4 года назад +12

      This is it for me exactly. Car reviewers, if they complain about anything, always complain about something you would only care about if you tracked the car on the weekends. Doug actually shows things I might actually take an interest in (or have a problem with!) if I were to TRULY ACTUALLY REALLY own the car.

    • @user-hr2zy7ct8h
      @user-hr2zy7ct8h 4 года назад +4

      that's not the reason though. the reason for his success is he pleases the algorithm. matt is producing videos for drivers, doug idk anyone can watch his videos driving is a very small part of his videos. the most successful german YT channel is the one which people who don't even like cars watch, I think it's the exact same with doug. you can watch dougs videos without caring about driving at all, without even caring about cars just to see some quirks and features of your favorite status symbol, but the same audience wouldn't have a clue how to enjoy one takes on perfect roads even a part of the customers of the cars which matt reviews won't be able to enjoy one takes because they just want to own that car they don't care how it drives I used to think the same way if I got rich I would have simply bought an LP640 and it wouldn't matter if it drove like crap. the TST one takes are for people who not only appreciate the fast/unique cars but who also enjoy driving. and that's only a small part of the YT audience. it's mostly kids, people who don't even like cars, people who think cars are status symbols, I think drivers are a minority here. it's funny how matt said "maybe I don't interact with the viewers enough" or something like that because he's one of the only people on this platform who actually produces content which the viewers want instead of producing content that makes money or mainstream content to reach a wider audience.
      it's the top gear syndrome - top gear wasn't really a car show it was a comedy, traveling and shenanigan show and the car reviews and stig laps were the side dish. that's why they became the most successful show, most of their audience wasn't even into driving and didn't care that much about cars.

      I know that this is not going to be popular, but the ability to sit with my kids and watch a video that is not just filled with profanity is a huge part of why I love Doug. His enthusiasm is just infectious, he loves what he doesn’t I love that too.

    "When was the last time you saw a Maxima SE with a manual gearbox in operational condition"
    Funny story. I just recently bought a 1995 Maxima SE in Ruby Pearl with a manual gearbox back in March from of all things... the original owner (an older lady) who bought it new in 1995. Garage kept it's entire life, body and paint are in great shape minus 25 years of use, interior is nearly immaculate, virtually no rust except for the rad support (basically rust killed these cars). Car had 227k miles on it when I bought it and was still on the original clutch which me & my friend have since verified after replacing the clutch (clutch had Nissan stamped on it lol). The lady who owned this car should give master classes in how to drive a manual, because the clutch still had life left on it (what would have gone on the clutch was the springs), the flywheel was absolutely spotless (my friend just lightly sanded it). Car runs and drives way better than it has any right to and the lady who owned it gave me 10 years of repair bills along with the original window sticker in perfect condition (I nearly fell on the floor when she showed me).
    She was going to donate it to charity, but I got the car for $700. Best $700 I ever spent!

    Doug's reasons for success? Three, in my opinion, that come together beautifully:
    1. His personality. Passionate, quirky, infectious, relatable. He's one of us, and his love & excitement of cars transfers to you the viewer.
    2. His structure. You know what to expect. "THISSS", which is hilarious. A fun beginning with Quirks & Features that show off his personality. A Doug Score at the end that introduces a competitive & informative component to it. Both the Quirks and the Doug Score encourage me to watch videos of certain cars that I normally wouldn't care about.
    3. His knowledge. It's obvious he knows a lot about cars, which only builds as he continues his craft. That knowledge comes through in his videos, which builds trust and legitimacy. I remember when his Rivian and Lucid reviews came out, people were mentioning Doug Demuro's reviews when talking RIVN and LCID stock prices.

    I'll tell you right now why Doug gets so many views: FORMAT and CONSISTENCY. People know what they're going to get and he gets into all the weird little details that car guys love. It's both super nerdy and esoteric but also very widely appealing to a huge spectrum of car people.

    Best Car Podcast in recent years. I actually laughed out loud multiple times during this. Such an interesting take on everything automobile. With all the Quirks and odd features of the decisions of car manufacturers. Five stars.

    I met Matt once at C&C and it didn’t come to me that, that was his lambo. I was driving a beat up 733i and so when I left I saw the red lambo leave so I followed and looked who was in it and there was Matt. So I followed him to a coffee shop and we talked a bit about cars. He was very impressed with the fact of the condition of that 733i for the price I paid for it. So much so that when a 3.0 CS came in to the same shop he laughed at that guy and said you could have had one of these for cheap. And I’ll have to meet Doug in the future. I hope I run into Matt and Doug in the future.

    yeah you nailed it, i think Doug makes his videos about what other people want to see. I love the ones takes in a different way because it shows me how a car feels driving. I would say that I would like more from the inside. as that is where I'd be sitting as a driver. I watch one takes to know what it's like to drive a car. I'd like to see more of how it looks to drive it.

    Matt and Zach: I have a hypothesis of why dougs channel does so well. RUclips stack ranks videos by category and quality in a way that is a blackbox. All of his videos have comments like: “Doug is the type of guy that ”. I think this causes his vides to stack rank higher in the quality score and thus causes his videos to play next when viewing vidoes on other channels. I think this causes him to get more exposure. The community is doing something weird that is accidentally bumping the videos up.

    Just discovered the podcast. Would love to hear more of Matt's thoughts on politics like what he talked about in the end. I definitely have some stories of encounters myself. One was on the Ben Franklin bridge where a Philadephia cop did a quick movement as if he was going to hit me when I was driving next to him after he and I looked each other in the eyes. Just wanted to say it was good to hear that you're not ignoring it.

    Aww - the S10 Blazer - My father had one of those, with the 4.3 V6 - The biggest V6 engine in any car! - He loved it so much he even replaced the motor after the first one took a shit. He had that S10 Blazer for decades as a work vehicle! I remember the Black exterior and Maroon interior like it was yesterday! - Man, I love shitty weird cars! Thanks for the feels!

    Dick Trickle did indeed smoke under caution. Kenny Wallace always said Dick Trickle ran on coffee and cigarettes. He carried a helmet bag and a briefcase to the track. In the briefcase was his stash of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Sponsor at the time was Miller High Life. Oldest NASCAR Rookie of Year at 48 years old.
