Please help me understand your taxonomy. I always thought indole was a specific chemical (C8H7N). Is it rather a _class_ of compounds? Or are you using the word indolic to refer to a fragrance family or _type_ of smell, e.g. green; floral; spicy? Jasmine aside, I think subliminal indole/animalics are to perfume what varnish is to painting; it provides an even level of gloss or mattness and, especially if the vanish is yellowed or slightly tinted, it unifies the colors and adds depth. The Sistine Chapel ceiling, for example, used to look quite 'indolic,' but after conservators removed centuries of smoke and filth in the 80s-90s, it read as more of a 'freshy.'
Hi Michelle, thanky you so much for your comment, apologies that YT put in junk, I fished it out... yes I think I made a mistake here, please accept my deepest apologies, so indole is a specific chemical, but there is also a group of chemicals with that two ring structure that are termed indoles. I believe skatole is one of these. On the other hand, cadaverine, putrescine and butyric acid are not indoles, this is a mistake in the video, they are the breakdown products of amino acids or adducts of indole or related compounds in the same pathways and are found in similar places, e.g. the gut and the oral cavity... I am very sorry for my mistake, I trusted sources to be correct. I normally look up chemical structures and put each in the video, but here I didn't. This would have made me realise that cadaverine, putrescine and butyrate are just related compounds, rather indoles themselves, although I should have guessed from the names 🤦♀️ what a mistake 🤦♀️ anyway, these compounds do give off unpleasant odours. With using indoles in relation to fragrance, I'm talking about the florals and other fragrances that have a touch of something bodily, if you've smelt it you will know I think... I do think the line blurs when there are musks and other animalics in the composition though. And I totally get the Sistine chapel ceiling comparison 😊
@@dr.claire.perfume yes, skatole is an indole. Specifically methyl indole. It's amazing the difference in odor that adding a single methyl group can make! 😮
This was so fascinating! It sparked a long-ago memory of freshman Chemistry class when our professor told us that the same chemical used to make margarine smell more like butter is the same chemical that’s in foot funk. Now I’m wondering if it was butyric acid he was referring to. Anyway, I love an indolic jasmine, but there are some that have a more body odor smell, which I don’t like, and others that are more sex-ish, which I do like. It’s so interesting. Loving these scientific deep-dives a lot!

When I visited Europe I loved the chocolate sooo much more than here in America!! Now I understand why 😊 Buy the way I bought a lot of chocolate different types and brought them home as gifts everyone loved them 😍👍
My brother lives in the US and his children love UK chocolate, he always takes a suitcase. Of chocolate home 😂 I'm sure some US chocolate must be European style now though? It can't all taste like Hersheys?! Or does it?
I live in the Philippines and the reason you mentioned is exactly the reason why Jasmine perfume is not liked here, or at least all the people i know 😂 Appreciate and surprised that you know this Claire! Jasmine also reminds me of altars that are in older generations people’s homes, and sometimes funeral, but mostly churches.

Wow, a total indolic education! Fantastic! I don't know that I've ever experienced the VERY indolic/dirty in perfumery but I can say that I've always loved jasmine and white florals. I adore Alien and have worn both Lust and Fracas among others. I love a sexy, heady floral 😊. Great video!
Me neither really. I am very much beginner. I tried Sana jardin savage jasmine a few weeks ago and that really reminded me of lush lust. I actually thing flying fox was probably more indolic but that's been discontinued. Chef’s kiss to this video and to you!! Perfecto! I recently sampled Joy and 1000 in EDP concentration. I definitely enjoyed both but I was enraptured by 1000. Big love for me. I found La Tosca by Xerjoff to be indolic to an extent that really turned me off. One of the few perfumes I actually returned. As you say, we smell so differently, you or many others may like it. I’ve also found a couple perfumes from L’Artisan to be indolic. Haute Voltige and Rapelle-Toi come to mind. Great video! Thank you! ✌🏻🕺🏼♥️

This was SO informative omg. I used to think that it was patchouli that smelled sweaty to me, but I recently realized the common note that I seem to hate in fragrances is jasmine & immediately came to youtube to see if I was crazy or not. So thank you for explaining this so well! The perfumes that I just cannot stand are Flowerbomb, Prada Paradoxe, Gucci Gorgeous Jasmine/Gardenia, amongst others. They smell so foul to me & I never knew why. Seriously, thank you for this! Definitely subscribing 🙏🏼

Hello 🤗🥰 Indole was an abstract meaning to me. What I understood from indolic fragrances some heavy heady floral notes. Your video makes the concept clear to me. So thank you for this informative edition dr. Claire 👌❤ I agree that there is nothing indolic about the jasmin in Alien. Lately I am into vintage perfumy fragrances. Some of them are indolic and have an intoxicating smell. I have just discovered Givenchy Amarige and I really do love it ❤

I am not sure I can separate indoles in jasmine perfumes as I love most white flower perfumes (except specific ones such as Elie Saab in White. It was so awful. I dont know if this particular one had gone bad). I do have an old formulation of Alien, but I can't say where the intrinsic flower scent ends and where the indolic part starts. To me, notorious scebts I can detect an animalic or dirty skin quality are NR For Her EDP (I believe is the musk on this one), Dior Pure Poison (OG) and Madonna Truth or Dare Naked ( it could be the white amber in these). In most really vintage perfumes such as Joy by Jean Patou, vintage Shalimar, or vintage Fidji, I can definitely detect what I believe is Civet or Castoreum.
Yes I think musk and insoles really play well together if you love those smells, but I think they can be a lot for people who don't! I have been trying to hunt for an old formulation Pure Poison, I would love a bottle! I agree with your assessment of NR for Her EDP too, I think that's why a lot of people don't like it! 🥰
Thank you 😊 for the Gucci Nettare di Fiori it is more prominent in the opening. In general that is what I find, opening and mid, but I don't know whether that is a general thing. I don't think I sniffed many really indolic ones.
Thanks for an informative video. I first discovered a love of indoles on others was with Molinard Jasmin. This is beautiful, but I was astounded by how much it changed on my partner's skin versus off the test paper. It produced a visceral reaction in me and I highly recommend it for a great indolic jasmine.

Also when you put up the picture of the platter of oysters, I was just thinking mmm I would do that whole platter! Chilled, fresh oysters are to me one of the best things ever!
I used to think I knew what indolic florals were, but after watching this video, I am not so sure... I know I ADORE the natural smell of white flowers such as jasmine and orange blossom, but now I will have to go and smell indoles in fragrances to make sure THEY don't gross me out, lol.
Late to the party, but stellar video as usual. I do love animalic fragrances and some indoles love jasmine and florals too and I am aware some rose scents can smell dirty, as can honey. I didn’t live honey but somehow even that is changing. I think generally with greater exposure to these smells come a better understanding and perhaps enjoyment. I remember travelling to rural England and thinking everywhere smelled like manure. Now I am aware of the smell it but it is no longer as offensive and is in fact linked with nostalgia.
I totally agree! I think just smelling more fragrances helps you to appreciate the variety more. I have the same issue with honey, especially when the honey is more towards beeswax, like in Scandal. I find it off-putting. Thanks for watching 😘
I don’t like dirty indole fragrances, I prefer a clean smelling fragrance. When I think of jasmine it always reminds me of good memories at my in-law’s family in southern Cyprus. The scent of a bright and clean jasmine always makes me smile for that reason and it just takes me back to sunny days and being close to the beach. I also don’t like dirty interpretations of tuberose, but the only one I like is Diptyque Do Son which to me smells fresh and clean. And you don’t need much of it either (I like the body and hair mist versions too for subtler options).
Amazing how much a scent can take you to a memory or place and make you happy ☺️ I've been trying lots of diptyque recently, I've been really enjoying them. Thanks for watching ❤️
Hiya, just popped over from Gabby’s channel & happy I did! This must’ve taken ages to edit, tsmfs! My fave “indolic” & pretty close to a signature scent as I 1st purchased when about 16 in the 70s is “Fracas”- always my default when I can’t decide. I purchase “Joy” in the mid-80s, last got a bottle w/ about ⅓ left as a gift from hubby our 1st Xmas together (a few mos after marrying him- we got married around 4 ½ mos after our 1st date-32 yrs on Halloween!) & so love it! A recent love is “Lost in Heaven” by Francesca Bianchi. More floral on me w/ a slight touch of animalic; I really do get very dreamy when wearing! One thing I’ve noticed is people confuse “indolic” & “animalic” very often. While there’s connections- both very polarising- not the same. E.g., “The Lover”s Tale” by FB, people say it’s too indolic whilst it’s *very* animalic. I find it so interesting how body chemistry, how you wear fragrance vs it wearing you are all so varying! If I wear The Lover”s Tale or OG Poison (still have nearly ½ a bottle, the ¾ full bottle went :boom: in a house fire- no one hurt is most important but trying to find a replacement is highway robbery!) people look at me & say out loud “hey rockstar!” What? Don’t get it🤣 as they’re both so different but otoh Poison doesn’t smell the same on me as it does on others, defo not sickly sweet, very heady so perhaps on me it is indolic due to my body chemistry? Yes, animalic and indolic are different but connected and it's hard to separate them sometimes because we don't smell fragrances as single notes more as overall impressions where we can't pinpoint exactly what is what. I need to try some Francesca bianchi fragrances! Gabi makes them sound fabulous. I love it when fragrances are connected to personal relationships, it makes them so so special. I 1st got the big discovery set & am so happy I did as I fell in love w/ many of the more “masculine” (they’re all unisex, but some lean one way or another) to be fantastic on me. Otoh my skin eats frag so🤷🏼♀️maybe it’s just me but I’m sure you’ll find some that you’ll love! Her “sublime oils” are so nice as a base as well; a dry oil that doesn’t leave you feeling greasy. I use it all over! I swear it’s what’s helped my fried hair after the fire as my son had just measured it & it was below my old 🦇 bum, but lost about 8 inches & goodness knows how many layers. It now feels so healthy (split, fried ends gone!) & has grown from mid back to below my waist since March when it was burnt off, wild! Thanks for your reply! J. XXX 😘🧡
I do find that many vintage fragrances are indolic. There are some indolic fragrances that I can’t tolerate such as Musc Ravageur and some that I really enjoy like Alien and Cocaine by Franck Boclet. I really enjoyed watching this video Claire! 😍❤️
I need to find some strong indolic fragrances to try, I feel like I have only experienced light indolics. Lush lust is as heavy as it got for me really, relatively tame still 😊
I saw indols described like how we add a dash of salt to a dessert to bring out the sweetness. That makes perfect sense to me. It brings out the good smells and gives it depth. A lot of us are fans and don't even know it. Lol.
Yes I think that's a good description and certainly there are indoles that people don't even notice because they are subtle and just part of a fragrance and don't stand out. 😊

The market has made its decision and now it's just more 'consumer friendly'; a so-called 'easy grab' that nowadays my 16 y old niece wears... 😆

Perfumes with salt / mineral note smell sweaty to me. Actually only in the last 2 years I've opened up to sweet scents/ gourmands, before I was grossed by them it smelled dirty to me and I wanted my perfume to make me feel "fresh" and "clean"
I think I used to like fresh aquatic fragrances, watery florals especially like peony, now I think my.taste expanded and I appreciate more diverse fragrances. I get what you mean with salty sea fragrances. I think that melon super sweet calone can be a little cloying too...

So interesting, thank you for this video Claire! I always wondered why perfume reviewers would call white flower heavy fragrances "a bit stinky"! White floral perfumes are my absolute favorite perfumes, I never found them to be stinky or "damp skin" like. I remember so vividly from when I was young that when spring started, I could smell this amazing scent of flowers outside and I never knew what they were called but they I know they were white. I think that's why I've always loved white floral perfumes. And btw, would you consider Do Son edp from Diptyque high in indoles? It's a recent favorite of mine.

Now my favourite floral scent in nature is hawthorn. This is what I learnt from the Woodland Trust! "Hawthorn was never brought into the home. It was believed that bringing hawthorn blossom inside would be followed by illness and death, and in medieval times it was said that hawthorn blossom smelled like the Great Plague. Botanists later learned that the chemical trimethylamine in hawthorn blossom is also one of the first chemicals formed in decaying animal tissue, so it is not surprising that hawthorn flowers are associated with death". Beautiful and gross eh! I understand it's not possible to extract the scent of hawthorn from the blossoms and that it has to be synthesized by the perfumer. Fantastic video Claire, tons of work gone in here and you've broken it down for non sciencey folks for us to understand why we like and sometimes want to go back for more of something funky 😂

Hawthorn is a lovely smell in nature, it really reminds me of back home, we have a hawthorn hedge. And yes, there is a weird urge isn't there to sniff things again. No matter how bad they are! May I ask something, am I right in assuming, that in many Oud type of fragrances, they use these indoles, especially in the opening. And when people feel strong harsh smell in the opening, they would assume that it is oud out of ignorance, which is a win for a house, who try to claim Oud type of fragrance? Also, I do think that great examples of Indols are in Xerjoffd Malesia, Strangelove Deadofnight, maybe some other famous ones?
I know you can buy indoles, but I think perfumers tend to hold back on adding them as it can be just a lot for some people. I don't know the composition of natural ouds, but yes some types smell more fecal than others. I don't know whether they have a skatole type molecule in them or whether the fungus rotting the wood actually produces an indole, but it's possible. I am really not sure though. Oud is so pricey that I doubt I've smelt many authentic pud fragrances. Most oud is a synthetic accord, you'd be hard pressed to get an natural Oud based fragrance under £200. I guess it's possible that some fragrance houses may add indole to stimulate a barnyard type oud but I don't know for sure... I will add that to my Xerjoff list, I have a few from them that I want to try. Thanks for watching 🥰
I still recall the smell of Butyric acid (been well over a decade since I stood at a bench) quite unpleasant and I did not know that about American chocolate! I remember the first time I tried Hershey’s I hated it. We are pretty spoilt in the chocolate world Down Under 😂
Yes Hershey's is something you never forget 🤣 it's been a while since I used butyrate, but wow, ugh! I think in the end it was optional in the protocol and I just thought maybe I can do without this and did 🤣 do you miss lab work?

I think Lily is probably the most palatable and enjoyable white floral for me that's heady with indoles. I naturally recoil in the presence of indoles, and having worked in Bacteriology, in one case live Influenza on petri dishes. . It was definitely the lasting association of extreme indoles and every one since. I always think of dirt, infection, exposure to something not favourable. I like oysters though 👍😁
Haha, yes working in a lab exposes you to lots of smells that really aren't always pleasant. And yes some smells are very much warning signs of danger. This is just a fantastic video mate. Absolutely fascinating and yea not just indoles I think there's a weird human addiction to being quite repulsed and discussed. I guess it's the chemicals in our brains. And yea the sweaty dirty smell in the right circumstances is something that definitely works. Like the smell of the stationary cupboard to let everyone know what went on there 🤣. It's interesting the different types isn't it. I've obviously not smelt many real jasmine's but a very different smell to ylang-ylang indoles, a different dirty. I think Narcissus is the one we've all smelt the most of and with that very sweet green lovely smell they do smell a little dirty when u sniff them in. Thanks Dr really enjoyed that
Being disgusted is a critical human reaction because it save you from things like infection so I get that we are all curious to feel that repulsion in some way. Haha, the stationary cupboard is sadly not something I've experienced 😂 but yes, living through some peep show! Yes for me, ylang ylang smells like wee sometimes. Really concentrated wee. Jasmine is more fecal sometimes. Other times different again. ooh I didn't think of narcissus, but yes you are right! I guess I am not in spring mode right now! Those do have a very particular smell.

I’m looking for a more sophisticated sweet pea scent and have recently tried Issey Miyake’s Pleats Please. For me, it was a strong indolic scent (I think). It smells very similar to Elie Saab. But, while I want to like both fragrances, I’m not 100% sure I do. They feel overpowering to me. Maybe they are something I’ll grow into as I build my fragrance knowledge. Claire, I’m curious if you’ve tried Pleats Please and what notes you get from it.
Hello! I've only tried Pleats Please L'Eau which I recently finished and spoke about in my last empties video. That didn't have sweet pea listed as a note, but to me that smelt like the sweet pea plant, mainly the green parts. It wasn't indolic at all, but that flanker is meant to be lighter I think so that doesn't surprise me. I really wanted to find pleats please EDP but it was impossible to find here when I was looking. Elie Saab is just heavy for me, I wouldn't personal class it as indolic, for me it's combination of the honey and heavy white florals that makes it a lot! It's a rarely reached for fragrance in my collection, in fact, I just checked and I wore it twice this year 😂 that says a lot! I do like it though, it's just perhaps not me.
Well I've not tried it, so I can't comment, but I can guess that it's powerful. I am triggered by some floral fragrances with headaches too unfortunately.

Yes! 😂 I was in the kitchen at work this week and I noticed someone had just come back from a shott break in New York and had left a pack of Hershey's Kisses for everyone. I found it noteworthy that that pack was still there four days later on Friday when I left... People just don't like Hershey's chocolate in general in the UK, it's a very distinctive and unpleasant taste for most people here. I always wondered how it got so popular 🤷♀️

Do you actually think Alien is indolic? I don't with the modern one, but the older one, I can see why people might call it indolic, but really I think it's very very light if so. I was surprised that people were saying that was indolic when I asked a few people before filming this...
@@dr.claire.perfume I only smelled the current version of the original edp and I own the Eau Sublime, and neither smell indolic to me. I have gotten compliments from a man in the grocery store, who said I smell really good...😉
I want to get my nose on the Gucci one to see how I react to it! And for Alien, I blind bought it and I don't seem to like it. I i have not decluttered it because i heard people on RUclips talk about how it grew on them, so I'm patiently waiting for the winter to see if it grew on me too 😅
Yes, I do think the older Alien is a slightly different beast and I'm not sure which people are talking about sometimes... The newer one has a little bit of a soapy feeling to it later on. I think it's something that if you don't absolutely hate it, it may grow on you, trying spraying it in different amounts or layering it with other jasmine fragrances maybe? I guess you probably did that though, you later fragrance quite well and honestly with so much more expertise than me 🙂 the Gucci one took me by surprise, I thought I hated Bloom, then I tried the flankers and it was totally the opposite. Very interesting video, with a few cracking nuggets of info that I will be bestowing upon those around me! I didn't think I was a big fan of indoles, although I really enjoy both jasmine and tuberose. I adore Lush's Lust scent and honestly never thought of this being indolic (discovered it many years ago in my Uni days as they had a hair product with the same scent, and I loved it) - so maybe I actually really like them to the point where I don't even perceive them to be saucy?! 😀
Haha, hardcore 😂 I think Lush lust has changed from how I remembered it... The newer bottles smell a little plasticky to me. 🤷♀️ I think actually flying fox was perhaps a better example of something indolic, but that has been discontinued from my understanding. I don't think I've experienced the full on indolic at all. I am waiting to smell Salome, I've only heard about it from Gabi unfortunately.
Hello Claire, very informative video! I find the love/hate juxtaposition with indoles for fragrance lovers quite interesting. It seems men are not as adverse to them in my experience. It seems it is more prevalent in male marketed fragrance. I do like the smell of natural jasmine and I used to love Flying Fox shower gel and that yellow shampoo bar they used to make long ago that was full of jasmine flowers. I guess my brain never made the connection to stinky, yucky things. Perhaps I can't smell the bad part? I find the newer synthetic, clean jasmine almost soapy smelling. Or perhaps that's just because it is in a lot of products? Keep up the interesting videos. They are quite enjoyable! - Jenn
Hi Jenn! I agree, the newer alien smells a little soapy to me at points, I assume that's because of the synthetic jasmine that they are using. I'm not sure what it was exactly, but I used to love a yellow massage bar from lush, that had ylang ylang and jasmine but wasn't lust I don't think... Flying fox was certainly more indolic that lust! This is really informative! I noticed perfumes with hyacinth or wisteria bother my nose, now it makes sense. I'm really starting to appreciate ylang ylang notes and also more wite floral forward perfumes lately!
I used to have huge issues with ylang ylang but I really love it now. I guess it's just trying it more. And hyacinth especially is quite a strong heady one, sitting near those bulb flowers when I have them in pots in the house can be a bit overwhelming. Thanks for watching ❤️
Sometimes I love to smell dirty, sexy, my husband loves it on me as well 🤭😁 My favourites are Alien, Chanel Coco, JPG Scandal (the jasmin, gardenia, orange blossom, beeswax combination in it results sooo sexy, indolic, bit dirty , wooooww!!🔥). Hi Claire, I have an edp of Joy and I cannot get past the fecal note. I’m so interested in this fragrance and its history but I just feel like someone has put my head down a toilet 🤢. Strangely I wore the edt 30 years ago and never had that problem, so I’m wondering if it is the strength of the fragrance which is making the difference as opposed to my chemistry changing? 🤔 I’m considering spraying and immediately washing it off, so only the base notes remain- would that do the trick? I have to really steel myself to spray it as it lingers for days, so thought I would ask your thoughts 😅. Thank you for this video x
I have no idea Paula, I've heard several people say how they've tried and failed to get on with that fragrance... I don't think you are going to be able to get past it personally, if it's there it's there, I don't think washing it will help if it's that strong, it will still linger. I don't actually even know if the EDT is just a lighter version or a very different fragrance as they sometimes are with EDP/ EDT. Sorry I can't help you more.

I was surprised when I asked a few people and they told me that they did, hence why I put it in the video as I'd never thought of it as indolic 🤷♀️ to me it's more perhaps the musky cashmeran that is making people find it animalic. Not at all! Your grammar is great! I think Alien is not the beast that people make it out to be, these days it feels quite tame to me. The reformulations have dulled it significantly. And yes, that sounds like that fragrance could well be indolic.
Both really, both are quite rich, thick scents, both suitable for now and very long lasting with great projection. The thing for me that differentiates them is whether you want beeswax, some people struggle with that smell on top of the honey in Scandal. And scandal by night doesn't have licorice, but does have tuberose and sticky cherry. To me, scandal by night is the more approachable of the two but if you like that waxy honey smell, maybe you eat jars of honey with the comb in?... Then Scandal might be ok. Personally, I'd never choose Scandal, but that's because I dislike honeycomb... Hope that helps!

Some of the indolic fragrances smell intoxicating and I adore them but there is no way that I am going to embrace a fragrance that smells like fart or bad breath.
Gross comment, skip if you're faint at heart: When I used to have earrings or piercings (espically if they're new or I haven't had an earring in them) they have this gross smell which I keep on sniffing😅😅 I haven't had any earring since 2012, it's only tattoos now

Please help me understand your taxonomy. I always thought indole was a specific chemical (C8H7N). Is it rather a _class_ of compounds? Or are you using the word indolic to refer to a fragrance family or _type_ of smell, e.g. green; floral; spicy? Jasmine aside, I think subliminal indole/animalics are to perfume what varnish is to painting; it provides an even level of gloss or mattness and, especially if the vanish is yellowed or slightly tinted, it unifies the colors and adds depth. The Sistine Chapel ceiling, for example, used to look quite 'indolic,' but after conservators removed centuries of smoke and filth in the 80s-90s, it read as more of a 'freshy.'
Hi Michelle, thanky you so much for your comment, apologies that YT put in junk, I fished it out... yes I think I made a mistake here, please accept my deepest apologies, so indole is a specific chemical, but there is also a group of chemicals with that two ring structure that are termed indoles. I believe skatole is one of these. On the other hand, cadaverine, putrescine and butyric acid are not indoles, this is a mistake in the video, they are the breakdown products of amino acids or adducts of indole or related compounds in the same pathways and are found in similar places, e.g. the gut and the oral cavity... I am very sorry for my mistake, I trusted sources to be correct. I normally look up chemical structures and put each in the video, but here I didn't. This would have made me realise that cadaverine, putrescine and butyrate are just related compounds, rather indoles themselves, although I should have guessed from the names 🤦♀️ what a mistake 🤦♀️ anyway, these compounds do give off unpleasant odours.
With using indoles in relation to fragrance, I'm talking about the florals and other fragrances that have a touch of something bodily, if you've smelt it you will know I think... I do think the line blurs when there are musks and other animalics in the composition though. And I totally get the Sistine chapel ceiling comparison 😊

This was so fascinating! It sparked a long-ago memory of freshman Chemistry class when our professor told us that the same chemical used to make margarine smell more like butter is the same chemical that’s in foot funk. Now I’m wondering if it was butyric acid he was referring to. Anyway, I love an indolic jasmine, but there are some that have a more body odor smell, which I don’t like, and others that are more sex-ish, which I do like. It’s so interesting. Loving these scientific deep-dives a lot!

I recently sampled Joy and 1000 in EDP concentration. I definitely enjoyed both but I was enraptured by 1000. Big love for me.
I found La Tosca by Xerjoff to be indolic to an extent that really turned me off. One of the few perfumes I actually returned.
As you say, we smell so differently, you or many others may like it. I’ve also found a couple perfumes from L’Artisan to be indolic. Haute Voltige and Rapelle-Toi come to mind.

I havent tried Joy or 1000, I think Dior bought Jean Patou and perhaps discontinued a lot of their fragrances. A few people have mentioned l'artisan, I will have to try to sample some. This was SO informative omg. I used to think that it was patchouli that smelled sweaty to me, but I recently realized the common note that I seem to hate in fragrances is jasmine & immediately came to youtube to see if I was crazy or not. So thank you for explaining this so well! The perfumes that I just cannot stand are Flowerbomb, Prada Paradoxe, Gucci Gorgeous Jasmine/Gardenia, amongst others. I am not sure I can separate indoles in jasmine perfumes as I love most white flower perfumes (except specific ones such as Elie Saab in White. It was so awful. I dont know if this particular one had gone bad).
I do have an old formulation of Alien, but I can't say where the intrinsic flower scent ends and where the indolic part starts.
To me, notorious scebts I can detect an animalic or dirty skin quality are NR For Her EDP (I believe is the musk on this one), Dior Pure Poison (OG) and Madonna Truth or Dare Naked ( it could be the white amber in these).
In most really vintage perfumes such as Joy by Jean Patou, vintage Shalimar, or vintage Fidji, I can definitely detect what I believe is Civet or Castoreum.
Yes I think musk and insoles really play well together if you love those smells, but I think they can be a lot for people who don't! I have been trying to hunt for an old formulation Pure Poison, I would love a bottle! I agree with your assessment of NR for Her EDP too, I think that's why a lot of people don't like it! 🥰

Thank you 😊 for the Gucci Nettare di Fiori it is more prominent in the opening. In general that is what I find, opening and mid, but I don't know whether that is a general thing. I don't think I sniffed many really indolic ones.
Thanks for an informative video. I first discovered a love of indoles on others was with Molinard Jasmin. This is beautiful, but I was astounded by how much it changed on my partner's skin versus off the test paper. It produced a visceral reaction in me and I highly recommend it for a great indolic jasmine.

I used to think I knew what indolic florals were, but after watching this video, I am not so sure... I know I ADORE the natural smell of white flowers such as jasmine and orange blossom, but now I will have to go and smell indoles in fragrances to make sure THEY don't gross me out, lol.

Late to the party, but stellar video as usual. I do love animalic fragrances and some indoles love jasmine and florals too and I am aware some rose scents can smell dirty, as can honey. I didn’t live honey but somehow even that is changing. I think generally with greater exposure to these smells come a better understanding and perhaps enjoyment.
I remember travelling to rural England and thinking everywhere smelled like manure. Now I am aware of the smell it but it is no longer as offensive and is in fact linked with nostalgia.
I totally agree! I think just smelling more fragrances helps you to appreciate the variety more. I have the same issue with honey, especially when the honey is more towards beeswax, like in Scandal. I find it off-putting. Thanks for watching 😘
I don’t like dirty indole fragrances, I prefer a clean smelling fragrance. When I think of jasmine it always reminds me of good memories at my in-law’s family in southern Cyprus. The scent of a bright and clean jasmine always makes me smile for that reason and it just takes me back to sunny days and being close to the beach. I also don’t like dirty interpretations of tuberose, but the only one I like is Diptyque Do Son which to me smells fresh and clean. And you don’t need much of it either (I like the body and hair mist versions too for subtler options).
Amazing how much a scent can take you to a memory or place and make you happy ☺️

Hiya, just popped over from Gabby’s channel & happy I did! This must’ve taken ages to edit, tsmfs! My fave “indolic” & pretty close to a signature scent as I 1st purchased when about 16 in the 70s is “Fracas”- always my default when I can’t decide. I purchase “Joy” in the mid-80s, last got a bottle w/ about ⅓ left as a gift from hubby our 1st Xmas together (a few mos after marrying him- we got married around 4 ½ mos after our 1st date-32 yrs on Halloween!) & so love it! A recent love is “Lost in Heaven” by Francesca Bianchi. More floral on me w/ a slight touch of animalic; I really do get very dreamy when wearing! One thing I’ve noticed is people confuse “indolic” & “animalic” very often. While there’s connections- both very polarising- not the same. E.g., “The Lover”s Tale” by FB, people say it’s too indolic whilst it’s *very* animalic. I find it so interesting how body chemistry, how you wear fragrance vs it wearing you are all so varying! If I wear The Lover”s Tale or OG Poison (still have nearly ½ a bottle, the ¾ full bottle went :boom: in a house fire- no one hurt is most important but trying to find a replacement is highway robbery!) people look at me & say out loud “hey rockstar!” What? Don’t get it🤣 as they’re both so different but otoh Poison doesn’t smell the same on me as it does on others, defo not sickly sweet, very heady so perhaps on me it is indolic due to my body chemistry? Yes, animalic and indolic are different but connected and it's hard to separate them sometimes because we don't smell fragrances as single notes more as overall impressions where we can't pinpoint exactly what is what. I use it all over! I swear it’s what’s helped my fried hair after the fire as my son had just measured it & it was below my old 🦇 bum, but lost about 8 inches & goodness knows how many layers. I do find that many vintage fragrances are indolic. There are some indolic fragrances that I can’t tolerate such as Musc Ravageur and some that I really enjoy like Alien and Cocaine by Franck Boclet. I really enjoyed watching this video Claire! 😍❤️
I need to find some strong indolic fragrances to try, I feel like I have only experienced light indolics. Lush lust is as heavy as it got for me really, relatively tame still 😊
I saw indols described like how we add a dash of salt to a dessert to bring out the sweetness. That makes perfect sense to me. It brings out the good smells and gives it depth. A lot of us are fans and don't even know it. Lol.
Yes I think that's a good description and certainly there are indoles that people don't even notice because they are subtle and just part of a fragrance and don't stand out. 😊

The market has made its decision and now it's just more 'consumer friendly'; a so-called 'easy grab' that nowadays my 16 y old niece wears... 😆

Actually only in the last 2 years I've opened up to sweet scents/ gourmands, before I was grossed by them it smelled dirty to me and I wanted my perfume to make me feel "fresh" and "clean"
I think I used to like fresh aquatic fragrances, watery florals especially like peony, now I think my.taste expanded and I appreciate more diverse fragrances. I get what you mean with salty sea fragrances. I think that melon super sweet calone can be a little cloying too...

So interesting, thank you for this video Claire! I always wondered why perfume reviewers would call white flower heavy fragrances "a bit stinky"! White floral perfumes are my absolute favorite perfumes, I never found them to be stinky or "damp skin" like. I remember so vividly from when I was young that when spring started, I could smell this amazing scent of flowers outside and I never knew what they were called but they I know they were white. I think that's why I've always loved white floral perfumes. And btw, would you consider Do Son edp from Diptyque high in indoles? It's a recent favorite of mine.

Now my favourite floral scent in nature is hawthorn. This is what I learnt from the Woodland Trust!
"Hawthorn was never brought into the home. It was believed that bringing hawthorn blossom inside would be followed by illness and death, and in medieval times it was said that hawthorn blossom smelled like the Great Plague. Botanists later learned that the chemical trimethylamine in hawthorn blossom is also one of the first chemicals formed in decaying animal tissue, so it is not surprising that hawthorn flowers are associated with death".
Beautiful and gross eh! I understand it's not possible to extract the scent of hawthorn from the blossoms and that it has to be synthesized by the perfumer.

Thank you, this is a great video, and a wealth of knowledge of yours. May I ask something, am I right in assuming, that in many Oud type of fragrances, they use these indoles, especially in the opening. And when people feel strong harsh smell in the opening, they would assume that it is oud out of ignorance, which is a win for a house, who try to claim Oud type of fragrance? Also, I do think that great examples of Indols are in Xerjoffd Malesia, Strangelove Deadofnight, maybe some other famous ones?
I know you can buy indoles, but I think perfumers tend to hold back on adding them as it can be just a lot for some people. I don't know the composition of natural ouds, but yes some types smell more fecal than others. I don't know whether they have a skatole type molecule in them or whether the fungus rotting the wood actually produces an indole, but it's possible. I am really not sure though. Oud is so pricey that I doubt I've smelt many authentic pud fragrances. Most oud is a synthetic accord, you'd be hard pressed to get an natural Oud based fragrance under £200. I guess it's possible that some fragrance houses may add indole to stimulate a barnyard type oud but I don't know for sure... I will add that to my Xerjoff list, I have a few from them that I want to try. Thanks for watching 🥰

I think Lily is probably the most palatable and enjoyable white floral for me that's heady with indoles. I naturally recoil in the presence of indoles, and having worked in Bacteriology, in one case live Influenza on petri dishes. . It was definitely the lasting association of extreme indoles and every one since. I always think of dirt, infection, exposure to something not favourable.

Haha, yes working in a lab exposes you to lots of smells that really aren't always pleasant. And yes some smells are very much warning signs of danger. I hate when there's someone new and I smell something dangerous because they haven't used a fume hood 🤦♀️

And yea the sweaty dirty smell in the right circumstances is something that definitely works. Like the smell of the stationary cupboard to let everyone know what went on there 🤣.
It's interesting the different types isn't it. I've obviously not smelt many real jasmine's but a very different smell to ylang-ylang indoles, a different dirty. I think Narcissus is the one we've all smelt the most of and with that very sweet green lovely smell they do smell a little dirty when u sniff them in.

Yes for me, ylang ylang smells like wee sometimes. Really concentrated wee. Jasmine is more fecal sometimes. Other times different again. ooh I didn't think of narcissus, but yes you are right! I guess I am not in spring mode right now! Those do have a very particular smell.

I’m looking for a more sophisticated sweet pea scent and have recently tried Issey Miyake’s Pleats Please. For me, it was a strong indolic scent (I think). It smells very similar to Elie Saab. But, while I want to like both fragrances, I’m not 100% sure I do. They feel overpowering to me. Maybe they are something I’ll grow into as I build my fragrance knowledge. Claire, I’m curious if you’ve tried Pleats Please and what notes you get from it.
Hello! I've only tried Pleats Please L'Eau which I recently finished and spoke about in my last empties video. That didn't have sweet pea listed as a note, but to me that smelt like the sweet pea plant, mainly the green parts. It wasn't indolic at all, but that flanker is meant to be lighter I think so that doesn't surprise me. I really wanted to find pleats please EDP but it was impossible to find here when I was looking.
Elie Saab is just heavy for me, I wouldn't personal class it as indolic, for me it's combination of the honey and heavy white florals that makes it a lot! It's a rarely reached for fragrance in my collection, in fact, I just checked and I wore it twice this year 😂 that says a lot! I do like it though, it's just perhaps not me.
A la Nuit was an instant headache for me!
Well I've not tried it, so I can't comment, but I can guess that it's powerful. I am triggered by some floral fragrances with headaches too unfortunately.

Yes! 😂 I was in the kitchen at work this week and I noticed someone had just come back from a shott break in New York and had left a pack of Hershey's Kisses for everyone. I found it noteworthy that that pack was still there four days later on Friday when I left... People just don't like Hershey's chocolate in general in the UK, it's a very distinctive and unpleasant taste for most people here. I always wondered how it got so popular 🤷♀️

Do you actually think Alien is indolic? I don't with the modern one, but the older one, I can see why people might call it indolic, but really I think it's very very light if so. I was surprised that people were saying that was indolic when I asked a few people before filming this...

Yes, I do think the older Alien is a slightly different beast and I'm not sure which people are talking about sometimes... The newer one has a little bit of a soapy feeling to it later on. I think it's something that if you don't absolutely hate it, it may grow on you, trying spraying it in different amounts or layering it with other jasmine fragrances maybe? I guess you probably did that though, you later fragrance quite well and honestly with so much more expertise than me 🙂 the Gucci one took me by surprise, I thought I hated Bloom, then I tried the flankers and it was totally the opposite. Very interesting video, with a few cracking nuggets of info that I will be bestowing upon those around me! I didn't think I was a big fan of indoles, although I really enjoy both jasmine and tuberose. I adore Lush's Lust scent and honestly never thought of this being indolic (discovered it many years ago in my Uni days as they had a hair product with the same scent, and I loved it) - so maybe I actually really like them to the point where I don't even perceive them to be saucy?! 😀

The newer bottles smell a little plasticky to me. 🤷♀️ I think actually flying fox was perhaps a better example of something indolic, but that has been discontinued from my understanding. I don't think I've experienced the full on indolic at all. I am waiting to smell Salome, I've only heard about it from Gabi unfortunately.

very informative video! I find the love/hate juxtaposition with indoles for fragrance lovers quite interesting. It seems men are not as adverse to them in my experience. It seems it is more prevalent in male marketed fragrance. I do like the smell of natural jasmine and I used to love Flying Fox shower gel and that yellow shampoo bar they used to make long ago that was full of jasmine flowers. I guess my brain never made the connection to stinky, yucky things. Perhaps I can't smell the bad part? I find the newer synthetic, clean jasmine almost soapy smelling. Or perhaps that's just because it is in a lot of products? Keep up the interesting videos. They are quite enjoyable! - Jenn
Hi Jenn! I agree, the newer alien smells a little soapy to me at points, I assume that's because of the synthetic jasmine that they are using. I'm not sure what it was exactly, but I used to love a yellow massage bar from lush, that had ylang ylang and jasmine but wasn't lust I don't think... Flying fox was certainly more indolic that lust! Perris Monte Carlo Vanille de Tahiti is too indolic for many. I love it, but the opening is definitely indolic.

This is really informative! I noticed perfumes with hyacinth or wisteria bother my nose, now it makes sense. I'm really starting to appreciate ylang ylang notes and also more wite floral forward perfumes lately!
I used to have huge issues with ylang ylang but I really love it now. I guess it's just trying it more. And hyacinth especially is quite a strong heady one, sitting near those bulb flowers when I have them in pots in the house can be a bit overwhelming. Thanks for watching ❤️

It’s not bad, just not lilac. I heard a youtuber (the nosetalgic) describe it as very similar to MaDame EDT by Gaultier, I’ve never met that thou. Have you?😃
I've not tried that one either. I think it's long discontinued. For a gentle polite lilac, drop d'issey is a good and affordable one to try.

Hi Claire, I have an edp of Joy and I cannot get past the fecal note.
I’m so interested in this fragrance and its history but I just feel like someone has put my head down a toilet 🤢.
Strangely I wore the edt 30 years ago and never had that problem, so I’m wondering if it is the strength of the fragrance which is making the difference as opposed to my chemistry changing? 🤔
I’m considering spraying and immediately washing it off, so only the base notes remain- would that do the trick? I have to really steel myself to spray it as it lingers for days, so thought I would ask your thoughts 😅.

I have no idea Paula, I've heard several people say how they've tried and failed to get on with that fragrance... I don't think you are going to be able to get past it personally, if it's there it's there, I don't think washing it will help if it's that strong, it will still linger. I don't actually even know if the EDT is just a lighter version or a very different fragrance as they sometimes are with EDP/ EDT. Sorry I can't help you more.

I’m glad I was able to wear it and enjoy it for a short time in my life though. From memory the EDT was the same scent but lighter and not at all offensive. Thank you x

Hello claire another excellent educational video you shared to us 🙂❤️, honestly i cant determine the indolic in jasmine or in other white florals not a big fan of jasmine in perfume, but i do have one jasmine prominent perfume in my collection and thats bulgari jasmin noir, i like it but i dont love it i have to be in mood to wear it.

Thank you! I personally don't find Alien indolic. I was surprised when I asked a few people and they told me that they did, hence why I put it in the video as I'd never thought of it as indolic 🤷♀️ to me it's more perhaps the musky cashmeran that is making people find it animalic. I did try Jasmin noir ages ago, but I'm sorry I don't really remember how it smells 😂 I need to try it again... Thanks for watching. ❤️

When i was still working in saudi arabia there are lots of fragrance oils that you can find selling from perfume stores, i remember i sniffed one and it was so heady realistic jasmin, headache inducing, almost like a musky,dirty touch in it, is that an indolic?
Not at all! Your grammar is great! I think Alien is not the beast that people make it out to be, these days it feels quite tame to me. The reformulations have dulled it significantly.
And yes, that sounds like that fragrance could well be indolic.
I have a question for you Claire, which would you say is more "Fall themed" Scandal or Scandal By Night? I kinda want them both 😂
Both really, both are quite rich, thick scents, both suitable for now and very long lasting with great projection. The thing for me that differentiates them is whether you want beeswax, some people struggle with that smell on top of the honey in Scandal. And scandal by night doesn't have licorice, but does have tuberose and sticky cherry. To me, scandal by night is the more approachable of the two but if you like that waxy honey smell, maybe you eat jars of honey with the comb in?... Then Scandal might be ok. Personally, I'd never choose Scandal, but that's because I dislike honeycomb... Hope that helps!

Some of the indolic fragrances smell intoxicating and I adore them but there is no way that I am going to embrace a fragrance that smells like fart or bad breath.
