So.... What does your perfume choice / fragrance taste / favourite notes say about you?
Ok, so this video is the result of me reading about research trying to categorise people's food and aroma loves and going down another rabbit hole. 🐇 I emerged, not being sure what was right and what, well, wasn't, to be quite honest! There's some interesting, very similar, popular science, click-bait friendly articles, but I couldn't find any original research relating to smell personality, only mentions of research on taste personality, with no actual primary sources, so I'm not sure these stack up...
So today we are throwing science under a bus and just having a fun, slightly sciencey video, without the peer review. If you didn't already know, my day job is being a scientist, specifically a molecular biologist. I absolutely love reading about all the ways psychologists have tried to categorise personalities though, e.g. type A/B and Myers Briggs and I wondered if people had used perfume choices...
What do you think? Are these descriptions stacking up with the notes that you enjoy and how you think of your personality or do you think it's all a massive generalisation? Or on the whole, is it basically along the right lines? Does this all hinge on popular personality tropes? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Yes! I think this study wasnt all that well controlled but the findings seems to chime with a lot of people! 😊

Yes my granny was totally cool! I think grannies are magical people in the eyes of children. No one's parents are as unreasonable as your own as a child but no one's grandparents are as magical either! 😂
I would definitely say I’m a vanilla person, first person on the dance floor for sure! 😄😄😛
I am at weddings! After the couple of course! I've been to a few weddings where people have seemed hesitant to dance, so I always try to get dancing in case there is no one joining the couple...

There is no nutty category...I love almond note (Head and Shoulder almond scented shampoo is one of my fave scents). I've worn and loved Body Shop sandalwood perfume oil for years now but I don't agree with the description. And I almost always choose Strawberry or Chocolate Mint for ice cream flavor but the best ice cream I've ever tried was a Butter Pecan (special edition which I can't find anymore) from ice cream shop...Really fun video Claire 💙
Yeah, I was bit disappointed that he didn't have more notes listed because it doesn't really span much of the hundreds of notes in perfumes, I totally agree!
I didn't think the descriptions sounded like anyone that I knew. They feel like very extreme descriptions.
Alan Hirsch has certainly got me hooked though, I would like to read his book, even if it is not the most scientific thing in the world 🙃
I love ice cream, that is the one thing I want to do on holiday, try a new ice cream flavour! Germany has had the best variety in my experience. I might look up Hirsch's ice cream choice research and see what he says! Thanks for watching 😘❤️🌹

But seriously...THIS IS FANTASTIC AND FABULOUS AND I LOVE IT! The traits/notes correlations are BANG ON for me in a lot of ways. Especially the white florals - all the things you said about jasmine lovers are the exact opposite of who i am, and I make no concessions here: I emphatically dislike jasmine. I need to watch this again. And then one more time. This is one of the best things I've seen on RUclips. I love perfume, but I've seen all the reviews and I'm just here for the scentertainment of it. This is totally amazing to me. THANK YOUI!!!
Citrus - yes, but in doses and tempered with other things for the most part
Rose - no thank you (98% of the time, but that's changing as I age)
Lavender - i want to but can't
Vanilla - YES PLEASE (I'm an extroverted introvert, soooo.....)
Sandalwood - I'm 100% conflicted about sandalwood as a note
Fruity - i thought i'd be a fruity lover, but turns out fruits are my least favourite category in perfumery
Coconut - in general absolutely not, but in the summer...when in Rome...
Linen - irl, yes. in perfumery, nope nope nope
Any white floral (especially jasmine)? Hard no.
Honeysuckle - I WANT to be a honeysuckle person, but I literally don't know what this smells like.
Conclusion: this is brilliant and i am clearly in need of more therapy than I'd initially thought. :)

I really loved making this video, even though what Dr Hirsch is claiming is quite scientifically dubious 🤦♀️ I like the idea of it. I also sat there and psychoanalysed myself. I wish there were more studies on perfume that were such fun. I've read a few others but most are about scent notes and are a bit too chemistry based to be widely appealing. I need to find a new angle... 😂

I loved this! My favourite notes from the video are Vanilla and Coconut. I’m definitely an introvert so my personality doesn’t match up to Vanilla. You made me laugh about coconut lovers liking beachy perfumes 😂 I had the exact same thought. I always enjoy your videos and how creative they are ❤️
Awwh thanks Chantel! Yeah a few of these didn't match with my expectations. I don't think this is hardcore scientific research at all, totally just a bit of fun! Everyone is a mishmash. I love coconut too, but I am definitely not a put together person and I hate making decisions for other people... Rose seemed more like me, but with facets of some of the other notes. I guess no person fits in a neat personality box though. Everyone is complicated 😜

Yes I originally started reading about it trying to find a scientific angle (I'm a scientist) and ultimately there were no publicly available publications on this, so I thought I'd just do a fun video anyway... It's fun to hear, even if it is not the most rigorous research ever put in the public domain 😂
I often wind up with "fruity" fragrances (not sickly sweet) in order to avoid an overload of florals, but I love green fragrances! i read that intellectual people who love to read also love green fragrances, and I can't get enough, lol!

@@dr.claire.perfume Yes, they are! I noticed that effect, and the photo-realistic ones like Diptyque's L'Ombre Dans L'Eau are especially fun! That one literally transports me to a relaxed garden with entire rose and blackcurrant bushes beside a friendly forest and a small, clean lake!

Maybe gardenia is not the main note though. My vintage bottle is mainly decalactone, the synthetic peach smell and jasmolactone the synthetic jasmine smell, along with those plasticky aldehydes and coriander. Gardenia is background for me. Likely should have chosen something more punchy on the gardenia. I wonder what the new city formulation smells like? I can imagine how it smells now they no longer list peach as a note! 💕

What an interesting video! I love several diverse notes, including rose, jasmine, citrus. I am also a fan of sandalwood. So personality wise, I guess I’m a complex person.
I think it's rare that someone would fit just one box, it's a bit of a weird idea for a study, but an interesting one! 😂

My favorite perfume is L'eau d'Issey. It is so good 🥰 it's simple yet so beautiful. It's flowery, warm, almost classic and sensual...I just love it
I like l'eau d'issey pure petal de nectar a lot and I just finished l'eau d'issey florale, but I've never owned the original, only sampled it in store. Thanks for watching ❤️
I matched a honeysuckle personality but I am a laundry scent/Vanilla lover so I LOL! It was such a fun test. You were spot on with the Citrus, Lavender and fruity as I have friends and relatives who match those 100%.

This was such an interesting video Claire and my favourite notes are rose and woody notes; but I like interesting rose perfumes like Portrait of a Lady so some of the description fitted but not all. Woody notes were missing which is a shame and resinous notes which are a favourite too. I love benzoin and myrrh.
Yes some of my favourites are missing too, oh and myrrh is a beautiful note. I guess the study only looked at a very limited selection of notes unfortunately. The smell and taste institute do some interesting studies, not all of which seem to be entirely scientifically rigourous but they are fun! 😉

I also smell plastic with Gucci Rush, I can't say it's one of my favourites, but I appreciate the Barbie doll idea of it. I think this whole idea of trying to generalise about people based on perfume scent notes is a bit whacky. It's not going to be accurate but I thought it was quite fun to see what the categories were like. Thanks for watching 😘❤️

Yes the variety in his study was totally lacking and really people won't fit in these personality boxes at all. He's a very strange researcher and this study is not necessarily the most scientifically relevant 🤣 but a fun idea! ☺️ Thanks for watching ❤️
Love neroli and orange blossom, my favourite perfume is Neroli Oranger by Matiere Premiere.
When I did BJJ, many people were extremely cleanly scented...I had wondered if some of them had worn a spray from Clean brand, or something other than just clean laundered clothes. I think the research with that makes sense.
I also know the most easy-going, diplomatic and sunny woman on the planet, and she loves a honeysuckle fragrance from Bath and Body Works.
My rose loving best friend is a true extrovert though. So I'm not sure she fits.
Another fraghead friend I have loves vanilla, and she's extremely shy...moreso even than myself (I can write like crazy, bur I'm shy in person).
So it's like, half&half with the results for me (personally, I'm just one anecdote with the folks I know).
I should prefer rose according to these breakdowns, but I really, truly do love and own a huge array. I love Narciso (white cube), many gourmonds, rose (yes), citrusy things...but my very favorite perfume is Angel. Is this research very accurate if it's reviewing fragheads? We tend to be into too many genres
Yeah I have friends for who this fits and for whom it just doesn't... I guess we see this like a zodiac aImost... the Barnum effect will come into this. I do doubt this is accurate at all really 😂 that guy's research is quite dodgy in general as I talk through briefly in the intro, but this "study" of his is not peer reviewed, really it would never get published. It was just a fun idea for me and a curiosity, I really liked the idea of the study at least!
I agree with you though that fragheads are a completely different kettle of fish to the general population. General rules really won't necessarily apply as I think they will tend to passover the easygoing ones and choose things that are more challenging.

Interesting video and concept. I love vanilla, it's my favorite note in perfumery. I'm also highly introverted. However, my favorite perfume of all time is Light Blue. Although I'm introverted I've been called assertive and bossy. In group projects I tend to be the leader, it comes from being the first born I guess. I also love some fruity perfumes and laundry scents.
Sounds like a real mixed bag there! I think most people fit in multiple boxes. People aren't as one dimensional as this study might seem to suggest. Thanks for watching ❤️

Fun video. More of this! Next can you do a video with your own opinions about selecting perfumes by personality type?
Also lots of perfume categories got left out. I'd trust your opinion more than that person's. A better question might be, what motivates a person to choose one type of perfume over another. Lot's of territory to explore, and we don't always have to be serious.
I am not sure I'll do another fragrance personality video for a while, but I will think about it! I don't think I can really accurately tell you why people choose fragrances over others, the reasons will be different each time and they are going to also be influenced by social conditioning and personal experiences. That "institute" does some interesting "research", most of it for headlines I think. I've not seen anything actually peer reviewed, but yeah, it's kinda fun 😂 who knows what he gets up to or how he decides what his findings are! 😂

Lol, this was so much fun!! I would say that half of the information per notes I love matched me, lol. Will watch a 2nd time to get all the deets again. And if I remember from my 1st watch, notes I hate did not match me much. Namely Sandalwood and Jasmine.

@@brookesosa5032 oh wow! I'm at a university, I did a PhD on the genetics of hereditary tooth enamel disorders. I have worked on eye genetics too. Now I work on cystic kidneys but more in a cellular modelling way, I use crispr to introduce mutations and see what happens when I grow kidney organoids. Do you work on something in particular?

The lab I work for uses an AI/ML powered software to aid in the work of medical geneticists. As with many labs, we’ve also switched over to COVID-19 testing for the time being. There’s so much to learn! Hope you have a nice week ahead!
@@brookesosa5032 AI/ML is definitely required! The biggest bottleneck is not having people to get stuff done and to look at analysis with genetics. Loads of data but just no time! 🤯

Lol at you trying to be polite at the end 🤣 well let me see. I think the notes that I like the most in this video are vanilla, jasmine, coconut and fruity notes. Vanilla and jasmine I'd say not quiteee right, I'm and extrovert when I feel like it lol but also not too extreme of a wild and spontaneous person lol, and love spending time alone. So for that I'd say 50% right haha. Coconut, fashionable? Nah not really maybe a bit, so maybe 40% right. I was so shocked by the fruity scents one, there was literally nothing positive about people who like fruity scents whatsoever! I also noticed that he'd suggested that younger people like fruity scents because they have a more sensitive sense of smell than older people and so are overwhelmed by heavier aldehyde based scents, but again, I just think that's a current out of trend thing rather than a general finding. I'm sure younger people in the 50s and 60s loved aldehydes.
Ok, so not really that accurate for you but some aspects perhaps, do think it was above the level of association for more than just pure chance?! 🥰

He has some really interesting research ideas even if they aren't published in the best journals or any journals, I can see why he has captured people's imaginations and why he has published so many popular books! He has also classified people on ice cream flavours and looked at scents for arousal... 💕

Gucci Rush is a weird one for me, it intrigues me! I don't think I understand it, it makes me keep sniffing! I want to try the reformulated version because I sometimes feel like people are describing different scents when they talk about it. The new notes are really different though, so I guess that could the case!

I actually have a variety of everything for every occasion. For citrus perfumes like light blue, I work for the summer. I love florals as well. I have been laid those so-called juvenile candy perfumes. And what is called old lady. Anything as long as it’s my body chemistry. I see where is something that goes with your skin chemistry. 😂 vanilla I wear mostly wear the cooler ones. I’m very versatile when it comes to perfumes.
Yes me too, lots of different categories, although I have my favourites. I think the idea of people falling into these categories is ridiculous and any science behind this is woefully lacking 😂 but it was a fun video to make! 🥰

I was smelling Carolina Herrera floral perfumes, and it goes beautifully with my body chemistry. When I have to add to my collection is Bobby Valentino, Donna, born and Roma. It seems to have a little bit of everything. Sometimes what I really like is perfume that is very well-balanced with different notes. When it comes to woody perfumes, I like them to be in my bottom notes. Although not luxury, my favorite sweet perfume has to be Paris Hilton can can.

Another grade affordable perfume I love is SHI which is also very affordable with aquatic notes. I have affordable. I have big priced to expensive. I don’t discriminate when it comes to perfumes. If it smells great on me, then I’ll get it. The perfumes did not go with my body chemistry seems to be Chanel perfumes..

Funny - I love citrus most of all and vanilla and woods second, but I don't feel like these descriptions match me, especially not citrus. According to the descriptions I should be a rose, fruity notes and tuberose lover, haha. Now, I do like these too, but they're not my biggest favourites!

I think it's unlikely that perfume note likes and dislikes can accurately reflect personality. The research is based on a bit of a flawed idea really. Oh this is the guy with the genital blood flow in response to fragrances study that I talked about in another video. Really poorly conducted research unfortunately. Such a weird idea to put people in boxes based on their smell preferences. It sounds like some Victorian side show stall at a fair.
I made this because I thought it was just so ridiculous that others might enjoy it and yes, I was right I think. This was probably my most successful early video 🙃
