I used to feel that way but I find it hits at a whole other level every ten years or so older I get, every friend that leaves this world, every dream that lands badly, dies, or turns into some twisted zombie version of itself. Let's stop lying to kids from working class and lower class families that they can achieve their wildest, most unrealistic dreams if they just stay positive and try hard enough. Life doesn't work that way. I was a teen in the 90s, come from a blue-collar working poor background, and I had big dreams of exceeding my working-class roots, of becoming a marine biologist (or architect, or one of so many other things), and I grew up on a steady diet of media in the 80s and 90s that glamorized the rich and famous and spat on poor folks (associating social class with morality, ew). Shit has NOT worked out so well for me: I'm disabled and on a fixed income and I've got no partner or kids, I'm being exploited by a narcissistic asshole of a landlord right now, and I'm struggling to pull it together so that I can make something out of my second act.
