When people complain about tempos, I tried to tell them that a lot of the songs are the same exact same but they've always been, here's a good example. And the Grateful Dead themselves were slowing down songs like Saint Stephen or Friend of the Devil or Tennessee Jed way back in the late seventies, but people like to freak out about it because they hate Bob Weir and they hate John Mayer and they can't get over their hate hate hate hate. If Phil slowed tempos down they would lick his nuts and talk about how great it is
To be perfectly honest, I think a lot of the criticism of John Mayer in D&C is because he is a better guitar player and a better singer than Jerry was. I realize that statement will make many Dead fans lose their shit. Jerry was an indispensable part of the magical formula of the Grateful Dead, but it wasn’t because he was a great singer (mediocre at best) and he was a very good but not great guitar player.
@@jasonk75completely agree. love john and jerry for different reasons but technically speaking john blows jerry out of the water guitar wise and vocal wise. jerry may have fit certain songs better and felt more magical, but john is easily one of the best choices they could’ve made to help revive the dead. also john is basically up there fighting for his life every night because bob can’t sing anymore and is just talking/screaming all his verses lol
@@brandon6938 i’ve noticed that about Bob also. He seems to be more talking rather than singing at these performances. He’s just speaking the lyrics rather than singing them.
@@jasonk75agree completely. I’m a huge fan of John as a whole (less his pop stuff), but he is an incredible player and singer. I, like many others, got into the dead because of him.
I respect all of the men in this band and actually think John plays a great respect to the role he plays. None the less, the sound is often hollow and lacking the magic that it once carried. When I was 16 and depressed to the point of being suicidal, this music saved me. Mabey, it's me, but I don't feel that it carries the same weight anymore. With that said, I don't think they should stop creating this either. Dead Forever! Beat that horse until it can't breathe! This is and will always be an American institution.
I think it’s really easy to take for granted the talent, skill, craftsmanship and dedication (no pun intended) that it takes to create live music at the level that is expected from fans. These guys are living this music just like the Grateful Dead did back in the day. You have to live it to present such well constructed flawless versions of songs like this. I also think it takes courage to recreate a vibe that is hard to match. These guys sound fantastic and that’s coming from a non fan of John Mayer’s previous work prior to Dead & Co. No, it’s not the same as the original. If it were it would be kinda creepy, wouldn’t it?
I've seen them 5 6 times. Each time was excellent. They are not the same. Jerry was special in so many ways Also you tube is not live in person. There's not the urgency to the music The speed and perhaps some magic. But in the end, smiles all around and occasional brilliance.

Completely agree the music never stopped but it's magic and energy are diminished. But if people enjoy it then who am I to say.

They still have Bob Weir. I don't know why he didn't sing more of the song.

I just can't do John Mayer. And I'd feel like such a doofus to dance to his playing
But here you are.
Yeah, watching a video is not dancing at a show though. I can listen and enjoy it
Dude, just enjoy the music...
I think Mayer is the perfect compliment to the Dead to carry on Jerry's legacy.
@@jasonk75 yeah agreed, he's as good as anyone can be at it
