Always change atf every 30-50k miles and you shouldnt have a problem.
If its a junker and you dont want to replace the transmission, i would go with lucas. Has good reviews, its not a miracle fix, but it has its place

I bought a Subaru legacy with 150k and not knowing the maintenance history, changed all the fluids. It was shifting perfect, but after the change it acted like it had a high stall converter. Subaru guy told me if it was not maintained regularly, better to leave fluid alone, as long as it's not burned or dark. The new fluid must have been too slick for the bands. I added 1 bottle of trans-x and after 100 miles it was back to normal. 30k later still perfect.

Trans fix usually has additives to adjust the friction properties helping it shift better.
But yeah if you're way pass your maintenance interval you should leave it alone. The warn materials in the fluid helped it grip well. When you change the fluid it loses it's grip since you drained out the material with it.

Trans x worked great in my 96 Ram 3500 Cummins. My tranny started slipping real bad in first, I would have to feather the peddle to get going. I added a bottle of trans x and noticed the difference within 10 minutes. I was able to get over 12,000 miles out of it, mostly towing, until it finally lost first gear and I got a rebuild. Well worth the $10 imo.

I have a 07 GMC canyon, 2 wd. Transmission went out, 2 years ago Thanksgiving, found a used one cheap, had it put on, with price tag of 1100.00. Now, replacement tranny started slipping in all gears ( automatic). Bought Lucas transmission fix and added to fluid. Almost no slipping. Have to baby it up to 40, then does fine up to 65-70 mph. I'm a skeptic and it may quit working tomorrow, but right now doing really good. I couldn't believe it!!!

I had a 96 explorer with a v6. The Trans was horrible. Spent a ton of money to have them try and fix the slipping issues with limited results. I put in Lucas oil Trans fix and within a short period of time tge slipping was gone. Ran like a champ for another 5 years till I sold it. Seafoam transtune
    Full synthetic ATF
I have a 2001 maxima at 202k miles it was shifting very bad. P0744 came up.
    Checked fluid it was black.
    Did the following
3 x drain fill with few thousand miles between each.
Used valvoline maxlife full synthetic ATF & Lucus
It took something that wasn’t drivable to something that was.
Before 3 drain fill added transtune. And shifting improved a lot more
Then did a final drain and fill.
I did try only ATF but soon found out it needed additional add Ives of Transtune and Lucus together.
    Now it shifts smoother in
1-2-3 and R. But now when in 3rd if you floor it it slips out of gear into N. But if u let off gas it slips right back into 3rd. 4th not sure if it shifts into that but let’s assume it does. I still get p0744
I bet the TCC solenoid needs replacement or entire solenoid block or it’s the torque converter or clutch(a)
It’s at 215k miles now still going, it’s more for local driving around town.
The engine runs really good. Too bad it’s not a stick shift. Wouldn’t have this problem then.

People put this in and expect it's instant and fixed lol I don't notice anything changing till after 500 miles. Plus people wait till it's so bad it's gone. Lol Had a trans guy rebuild my trans he said after 30000 put new filter and stop slip I'm keep doing it every 30 k funny I wonder how he's doing I haven't lost another trans since he told me I do it for every car now.. beats every 50 k hard towing.

Ps I know when it's time to change filter when it starts shifting a little harder it usually around every 30 k lol. I drive stop and go traffic every day for 2 hrs that's hard on a trans 4 by the time I get home
