    Ellefson said it best about Anthrax live. I’m 44 years old, have been to a billion shows, and nobody touches Anthrax live still to this day. Saw them again in 2018, and they still bring it harder than anyone.

      went to my first metal festival a couple of years ago and Anthrax wasn't even on the main stage. Slayer were on their farewell tour, Maiden was the main event. Anthrax's show took me by surprise. Really outshadowed all the others and it lasted half as long.

      Saw them in Germany in a small club around 2000. Maybe 200 people there, but it was packey and evereyone was going wild (as I said -a small club). For me Anthrax then was one of the big great bands (as before and now) so it was really cool jumping around directly in front of these guys.
      One of the greatest shows for me!

    • @dowens3781
      @dowens3781 3 года назад +5

      I don't know about that - I think he would've evolved and adapted just like Joey did. Joey was originally a classic hard rock/metal singer, not a thrash metal singer, and he was a few years older than the other band members and didn't have a punk rock influence at all - Scott and the rest of the guys coached him to sing faster and more aggressively and intensely.

    • @bonemaplegaming9324
      @bonemaplegaming9324 3 года назад +8

      @@dowens3781 Right, I hear what you’re saying. I just think Neil always had that Manowar “epic metal” mentality, and it doesn’t seem like these guys were necessarily about all of that. I mean, the leather pants thing is indicative of that, I think haha.

    • @dowens3781
      @dowens3781 3 года назад +1

      @@bonemaplegaming9324
      Many metal band members wore leather pants back then, especially frontmen - denim and leather were a major part of the heavy metal look. And Neil's voice was more like Paul Stanley gone thrash than like Manowar. Scott and Charlie even mention that here (in Part 2). To me he was just a early 80's metal singer in the vein of Rob Halford and Paul Di'Anno, both of whom also wore leather pants. In 1982/83, the template for a thrash metal singer didn't exist yet - it was still in the process of being created, and the Big 4 bands set that template. Most who thrash metal singers who came after didn't have Neil's range and power though, so instead they were influenced by James Hetfield and/or Tom Araya. Personally, I was really disappointed when I heard Anthrax replaced Neil - I saw the band with Raven on their first (and last) major tour with Neil and he was probably my favorite metal singer at the time.

      @@bonemaplegaming9324 apparently, he wasn't booted for his singing. He was a big asshole back then and considering he has a fantastic voice and got nowhere after Fistful, I assume he still is. Neil Turbin and Ross The Boss would be a great musical partnership.

    Opened for Nuclear Assault in '87. Our high school metal cover band was pretty terrible, but we got a cool gig here and there. What I remember most about that night was chatting with Lilker after the show. He was such a nice friendly guy. He said he liked my bass playing and asked me about my bass gear. It was a very cool experience at age 16 and I still remember it well. He definitely seemed like a genuine good hearted person from what I could tell and he gave us some great thrash metal with other bands.

    Thank you! Thank yo! Thank you!!!!
    Those first Anthrax albums were part of my growth as a person and of my birth as a musician and composer. They were in the soundtrack of my teenage years.
    Nothing will change that and they will always have a special place in my heart.
    But I am very happy to say that those last studio records with Joey are my favorite Anthrax albums.
    That's why I'm always annoying them on social media to play more songs from the latest records.
    The Devil You Know, Fight'em 'til you cant't, I'm Alive, In The End, The Giant, Judas Priest, Monster In The End, Suzerian, Defend Avenge, Blood Eagle Wings...
    To me they are even better than the classics! Is awesome to see that after so many years, my heroes still have their super powers!
    I really do believe that the best is yet to come!
    Long Live Anthrax!

      What are you talking about ? Neil was to Anthrax as what Bon Scott was to AC/DC, as what Paul Di'anno was to Maiden, as what Ozzy Osbourne was to Sabbath, they were a big reason why you liked a band to begin with when you first heard them, maybe you heard Anthrax for the first time after the second album, in any case, maybe Joey elevated the skill set and range for Anthrax something like how Dickinson did for Maiden...in a more polished virtuoso way, but no doubt Neil had a unique raw rough-gravely characteristic voice like Di'anno and was a big part of making Anthrax fans from the beginning

    I got Danny to sign my ticket stub when he was in Nuclear Assault opening for I think Testament back in the mid to late 80s. I still have it somewhere lol. But yeah he was just chillin in the little entrance hall way thing at The Newport in Columbus Ohio. Good times for sure!! Long Live Rock n Roll!!

    Looking at the firing of Danny Lilker with hindsight in my favor, had they not fired him, we wouldn’t have Nuclear Assault, one of the best thrash/crossover bands of all time!!

    I'm really waiting for a next eposode! Anthrax beginnings are really interesting and I really like returning to Fistful of Metal. So happy to see Neil here, met him two times and it was really cool to talk to him!
    I'm really curious if they would mention Matt Fallon on the next episode. Great forgotten singer!

    I am a lifetime Anthrax fan and I love these episodes, but one thing I've learned is that if Corey is talking, you are listening and take notes.

    Best Metal album cover from that period hands down, and the music was fast and angry.

    I had this album on cassette and listened to it constantly on my Sony Walkman while cruising around on my powell peralta skateboard which by today's standards is like a fucking surf board. Great record

    I bought Fistful of Metal in a little record store in Cleveland Ohio, while on tour with my band at the time, in 1985 after reading a piece in Thrasher magazine that Pushead wrote about this up and coming genre called "thrash metal". Also featured in the article were Metallica, Mercyful Fate, and of course Slayer. Wish I still had that issue.
