Ellefson said it best about Anthrax live. I’m 44 years old, have been to a billion shows, and nobody touches Anthrax live still to this day. Saw them again in 2018, and they still bring it harder than anyone.
went to my first metal festival a couple of years ago and Anthrax wasn't even on the main stage. Slayer were on their farewell tour, Maiden was the main event. Anthrax's show took me by surprise. Really outshadowed all the others and it lasted half as long.

Booting Neil out was the best move they could have made. I can’t even imagine what albums like Among the Living would have been like with him on vocals.
I don't know about that - I think he would've evolved and adapted just like Joey did. Joey was originally a classic hard rock/metal singer, not a thrash metal singer, and he was a few years older than the other band members and didn't have a punk rock influence at all - Scott and the rest of the guys coached him to sing faster and more aggressively and intensely.
@@dowens3781 Right, I hear what you’re saying. I just think Neil always had that Manowar “epic metal” mentality, and it doesn’t seem like these guys were necessarily about all of that. I mean, the leather pants thing is indicative of that, I think haha.
@@bonemaplegaming9324 Many metal band members wore leather pants back then, especially frontmen - denim and leather were a major part of the heavy metal look. And Neil's voice was more like Paul Stanley gone thrash than like Manowar. Scott and Charlie even mention that here (in Part 2). To me he was just a early 80's metal singer in the vein of Rob Halford and Paul Di'Anno, both of whom also wore leather pants. In 1982/83, the template for a thrash metal singer didn't exist yet - it was still in the process of being created, and the Big 4 bands set that template. Most who thrash metal singers who came after didn't have Neil's range and power though, so instead they were influenced by James Hetfield and/or Tom Araya. Opened for Nuclear Assault in '87. Our high school metal cover band was pretty terrible, but we got a cool gig here and there. What I remember most about that night was chatting with Lilker after the show. He was such a nice friendly guy. He said he liked my bass playing and asked me about my bass gear. No doubt that Neil was talented. Problem is that there was nothing about him that made Anthrax stand out from the pack. Once they got Joey, they sounded original and great.
What are you talking about ? Neil was to Anthrax as what Bon Scott was to AC/DC, as what Paul Di'anno was to Maiden, as what Ozzy Osbourne was to Sabbath, they were a big reason why you liked a band to begin with when you first heard them, maybe you heard Anthrax for the first time after the second album, in any case, maybe Joey elevated the skill set and range for Anthrax something like how Dickinson did for Maiden...in a more polished virtuoso way, but no doubt Neil had a unique raw rough-gravely characteristic voice like Di'anno and was a big part of making Anthrax fans from the beginning
