🐕 Kimchi's editing notes 📝: The Insta360 X4 8K 360 videos require significant post-processing due to noise and graininess. We performed denoising and sharpening in Davinci Resolve and color graded to enhance quality and professionalism, including removing the tripod. We also discovered a problem with the Insta360 Studio V5 rendering engine that makes the 8K 360 video look poor. Obviously, we found a workaround, as you can see from the results in this video. Is there any simple app that can turn those images into a shperical image that we can look around in? like in google street view?

Glad I could help! And thank you for trying it on Quest 3 and validate the point for others as well. So this should be 8K on RUclips VR on Quest 3 at 4320s - but the new AV1 update take days to process anything in 8K. So the quality will be better on Quest 3 when the process is done.

Really loving your posts. I've watched many of them many times over. I'd love to see how you edit one of them (like this one for e.g.). I'm intrigued how you keep them a RUclips 360 from start to finish. When I try putting multiple 360 clips in a timeline in FCP, the exported finished product looses the 360 and reverts to regular video. Thank you thank you. Not much. If there is no details in the photo beginning with, no AI can do anything. The X4 photo has near to no noise, very digitally sharp and compressed in 12K. So Topaz can not do anything to enhance an already AI enhanced image.
Please tell me, is it worth buying insta360 X4 if I have Kandao QooCam 8K? What can you say when comparing 8k video from these cameras, is there a big difference in picture quality?
That really depend. If you use to Qoocam 8K 360 workflow, maybe wait till Ultra coming out first to decide.
Thanks as always to our boy Hugh -- you do great work and are always reliable and have great distinctions about each camera's function. Depending on use, I think Theta Z1 plus X4 is a good combo. I was watching the windows in the saloon when you switched to the Z1 shot (HDR) and it literally took my breath away. But I think X4 has plenty of good uses too, like with the outdoor and faster shutter speeds. Am having a meeting about virtual tours today and we'll be giving this video another watch while I am there!
Nice! Good luck on your meetings. As you said, they are both great choices. I am very nitpicking here as people do want to know all the details since they are spending lots of momeny on these cameras. But any of them will do great job as long as you do NOT use the X3 lol.
When you are out filming 360, will the peoples faces around 20 foot away now be clear? That is the biggest problem I have had in the past with all 360 cameras I have seen. Is this a viable option for vlogging now?

It can dual to Internet compression on 8K and just not so effective in camera compression in H265. But if you get the chance to see that film in AVP - the face is a lot clearer.

Hugh - thanks for the video. The video from the car as you pass the rocks and head towards the gate of the park - on RUclips the video is terribly, terribly MPEGgy. Is that RUclips artifacts or was the original video that chunky?
Both... I don't think X4 handle fast moving footage in 360 that well and then RUclips does not compress 360 video in movement that well.

I'm trying to watch this on 8k with MetaQuest 3, but I can't. I want to use MetaQuest 3 to record 360-degree videos and remember the travel moments vividly. Is x4 useful in that case? Or is the upcoming qoocam3 ultra better? Please recommend focusing on video records rather than pictures.

Just watched it in MetaQuest TV on the MetaQuest 3 choosing 'Best' Quality. OMG it looks SOOO much better than RUclips 4K so i'm guessing it is 8K? I can't quite believe the quality difference, especially the last bit recorded from your Jeep. How does that work, different upload process?
Oh it is approved now?! YES! Quest 3 is actually 7200K streaming (it was 8K upload tho) as I believe 7200K is mostly saturated the Quest 3 display (8K is more Apple Vision Pro). I glad you think this is better as you are now seeing close to original quality! I hope people shouting the bad quality here can see it on Quest 3 lol. But this is still NOT 8K. So I am still in support with RUclips and they now run this video in their internal processor to process it into 8K. I am the unlucky one and the original video did not get process into 8K. So in theory when RUclips process the video it will serve 8K AV1 - which will be better than Quest TV on RUclips VR app on Quest 3. I will ping everyone again when this ever happen. Been battle with RUclips in the last 4 days - it sucks :(

Yes indeed. 60fps is the key for VR. But there is no 60fps camera in 8K resolution or at least for now.

It is RUclips errors. On support with them and they are still investigating the problem.
I have the Z1 (with dualfisheye) but are tired of the workflow / editing for getting the best photos. I use it for Google Street View (indoors for companies)
Would you recommend to buy the Insta360 One RS 1-inch to get both photos and video? Then I could use it for both indoors anv video outdoors. Video outdoors is for trails, roads ect for Streeet View. Or should I keep my Z1 and just get the X4 for the videos?

i think the theta Z1 is still the best for virtual tour, which is cost the time to post pro... i use virtual tour with kandao 2 can't even make it close than z1 quality
Somewhere in the skunkworks of Insta360 labs has to be a selfie stick that forks so that you can attach two X4s at an angle so that the lenses are perfectly spaced for VR360. Then it is all up to software magic to piece it all together in post. Imagine a VR360 rig for less than $1200. Now imagine Apple building in hardware encoders/decoders in future chips for smooth 8K/16K VR editing and playback. The hardware companies NEED a killer app to push future upgrades...and this just might be it. The future is bright...and Hugh will show us all how to use it.

I didnt have high hopes for 360 photo. The Insta360 x series cams are good for video, not photo. The x4 is a tad better than the x3 for photos. Thats it.
@@hughhou Yes, the Theta Z1 has very poor video quality. 4k is poor for 360. I love the Xphase Scan so far. I also love the Trisio 2 lite. I always use these cams for virtual tours if clients are on a budget. I sold Z1 3 years ago.
Xphase Scan is still not capture everything at once tho - so only useable for stationary virtual tour. Lot of my jobs are big huge space with people walking around - like NYC sub station. I think Xphase Pro X2 is a better choice and not using HDR for this.

That is great. Quest TV upload should be process in 8K by Monday (when Meta get to work and manually approve the video). Then the quality will be higher as it will be in true 8K.
Really impressed with the X4, but i'm still yearning for an insta360 evo 2 or something that can do VR180... do you know if there are any plans from Insta360 for something like this? Canon is taking their sweet time with the camera they announced.... also, where Kimchi?
Lok Kimchi is not in this video. He only like Video. lol. So I did hear rumor EVO 2 or next VR180 camera is coming from Insta360. They identify the sensor to do 8K VR180 capture - and it is bigger than X4 I believe. It will hit 8K 30fps but considering 60fps as well now. Insta360 is usually very secret with their release so you probably won't hear anything until 2 weeks before the drop. Before it is sensor technology not catching up.

Hey Hugh! Amazing video as always. Look, I need your opinion here please. I want to use a 360 camera to film videos for a big project. Currently I have the One X2, and it totally looks outdated today. So could you tell me which camera as you think I should go for - the X4 or One Inch? As I said, I'll mostly be doing 360 videos, not photos. From those vids that I've seen by now, the One Inch has some crazy sharpness (not in a good way) which isn't possible to tweak (correct me if I'm wrong). Plus my laptop isn't really capable of digesting this crazy new 8K on the X4 so I'll only be using the 5K resolution. I'd love to hear your thoughts here! Thanks a lot.

Here are my reasons: Letting more light into your camera and bigger pixel unit. 1" with Leica Lens (like it or not, one of the best lens maker in the world). When you put it in tough lighting situation, One RS 1" will show clear advantage. I know the size might be a problem, but it might make you look more pro on set then a small X4 lol. The base footage is very good for post processing into 8K - as the pxiels are less digital compressed. So run them into a good post workflow (if you even upgrade your computer), they look the same as X4 or better depends on your skill.
Stitching is an issue compared to X4, but that can also be fixed with some tutorials here.
I also have A LOT MORE experience in One RS 1-INCH 360, so I might be a little bit biased. But so far, I do like shooting 360 in OneRS 1" than X4. And as you said, 6K is less taxing than 8K.
@@hughhou Big thanks for your reply and opinion. But do I get it right - One RS's image is way too oversharpened and these parameters can't be tweaked? And still no HDR video for it?
Oh I missed that point sorry about that. You can turn off in camera sharpening on One RS 1" - if you want that tutorial you saw how. Go to settings and turn sharpening all the way to LOW. Never use in camera sharpening. Then HDR is very bad for a not 10-bit action camera. So it is a good thing this is not in One RS 1". As you saw my original Review here: ruclips.net/video/PklHH4MFWvU/видео.htmlsi=zBlJGcXYKmiTTgwb - I did not review HDR b/c I think the quality is horrible and it is not 8K neither. So don't use it. A true HDR camera require a BIG sensor and 10-bit color depth which no action camera can really do it well. It is faked HDR that did not really give your dynamic range. A simple thing to test is to load that "HDR" video into a HDR display, it will look like 💩 - sadly consumer makers just causally throw around the HDR term to confuse people. HDR need the color space to do so and this def do not have REC2020 like iPhone or other cinema level camera.
But anyway, X4 is a very easy to use camera that give you 8K out of the box. It is not a professional "big project" camera but it is a great camera to have. So the different is between how much post work you want to do to your footage. If none, than X4 is great for it. If a lot, the One RS 1" give you that options. Out of the box. X4 is going to look better.

I'm unable to watch your video in 8k in either the RUclips app or the browser on the Quest 3. Other people's video show 8k with no problem - is there anything I can do to rectify this?
I have the exact same issue. Only shows resolutions up to 2160p on both the YT VR app or browser. They’re all the latest version also. :/
Yes it is a known issue and I flagged to RUclips and current in support chat with them. The latest RUclips update really mess up all 8K video upload processing time. I hope they can fix it soon.

Oddly enough, while watching RUclips on my TV Chromecast I see a 8k icon in the corner of your video and my problematic videos along with the videos that work as expected. Yet my quest 3 does not give me the option.. very odd. Seems to be a big delay in RUclips. All my video show in 8k now as expected. A short 20 sec video took over 2 days to give the 8k option yet the second duplicate clip posted that day 8k was available all most right away... Very odd.
@@hughhou same here. no 8K option. i have a theory. according to the insta360 website, the X4 records at 7680x3840 NOT 7680x4320. According to the RUclips/Google website, RUclips accepts 8K 16:9 resolutions at 4320p, and does not mention 3840p. Of course, with your tweaks, you may have already changed your resolution to 4320p, but it seems this is not what the X4 records at, according to their website anyway. I really need to know if X4 can upload to RUclips directly in 360 8K or not. If not, then getting the X4 would be completely pointless for me if RUclips doesn't accept it. Might as well stick to 360 lens from my ONE R. So many X4 reviews on youtube now, yet no one seems to have actually upload an example of the main point of having X4 to begin with. very frustrating. but thanks for trying.

For those saying the video isn't what they hoped, Are they actually watching in 8k? As far as I can tell, RUclips hasn't gotten the 8k version rendered yet. I am only seeing up to 4k on this particular video. I have one up that has been rendering the 8k version for almost a full day now. From what I hear, it can take a couple of days...
Wait you got 8K up a just a full day? This one is already 2 days and more - I finished this one right after my launch review and I don't want to release it when it is not 8K and then I lost my patient and just launch it. Still not 8K yet. Usually it only take 1 day for all my other 8K video. So frustrated. I will reach out to RUclips again Monday.

@@hughhou Verify that your footage is 7680 × 4320. Apparently, out of Insta360 it comes out with the wrong aspect ratio on the short side which YTube doesn't recognize!
Thank you for the video. Unfortunately, the insta 360 x4 has the same problem as the insta x2 when you shoot from a drone. Some areas of the frame seem to be breathing; if you try to explain this effect correctly, it will be very noticeable. On Kandao QooCam 8k I don't see this effect when filming with a drone.
You mean pixel blocking in some area - just blur right? Yes, I notice that as well. Qoocam 8K does not have that? I actually do not have enough experience flying with Qoocam 8K as it is too heavy for my setup. I think if it is X4 can not handle fine details in a distance. Their internal H265 encoder is doing something funky... I wish camera just give us RAW lol.

I can confirm that I have noticed this as well, in insta360 X4 videos from other sources too. It looks a bit like wobble from heat or like how distant scenery isn't quite stable in a game when it's on the furthest edges of visibility. I don't know what causes it in these cameras.

Great comparison. Ricoh is the only camera with HDR that seems to work. I think the HDR look of the outdoor scenes by insta looks terrible. It looks more natural to just burn out the highlights in the windows. Showing the weird blue color just looks like a bad HDR type photo. The X4 video looks great though.
Agree! I hope they see this video and update the algorithm. Giving us more options but not 1 side fit all type solution. Professional 360 photographer and pro Virtual Tour creators do not get too much attention as we are very small community. I hope by pointing out the needs and share example with the community can somehow push all products to the next level - a practical use case instead of all the BS hype that come and fade.

I really miss the ability for manually setting EV, AEB and ISO and having the separate exposure files as well. X4 doens't even have DNG export in HDR Photo. While all te rest is improved, I'm really disappointed with this particular feature no matter how good it looks. I love to get creative using the HDR DNG files in e.g. Aurora HDR (Luminar). I hope they bring back the choice to do so next to this AI auto mode. They could bring back the Nightphoto feature from X2 in that regard.
Oh yes!!! For OG user like you and saw the old features got taken away it suck. I hope they can bring them back in and it is all software update. I don't know why they skip all these entirely in X3 and in X4.
No X3 has the possibility to alter EV and AEB as well, that's what I like about X3. X and X2 is EV only. X4 has colored noise all over the place, in daylight conditions in my case.

X4 does not shoot any thing in DNG yet.

No dng/raw files? That's huge. If the X4 had raw files, do you think you could get better photos than with the X3 using Adobe and or Topaz post processing? I assume the AI only helps with in camera processing?
Prob not even they have DNG. DNG does not magically make image quality better and AI can improve something already compressed or not captured. But the good news is, after Insta360 saw this video they are commit to provide DNG in regular and HDR in May. They also working on Theta like HDR bracketing shooting. That is ETA but until now, no one really tell them what the problem is... that is crazy. Now they are gonna fix it.
@@hughhou Yeah, interesting that they didn't get it until it was pointed out to them. I'm not saying .dng makes image quality better but you can make a number of adjustments with .dng that you cannot make in a .jpg. ie. Lightroom Denoise, Topaz Sharpen. With a knowledge of these tools, do you think they can be brought up to a professional quality. Admittedly, I've done some 360 tours with a One X and was able to get pretty good final image with these tools. Also, do you see any difference between manual bracketing and in camera auto HDR?
One reason to get the X4 even if you already have the 1-inch RS is to get better sound. The on-board sound for the Insta360 RS is pretty atrocious. Yeah, you can't fit great mics in such a tiny core unit, but also it uses a low sample rate (22050 Hz apparently) which could be fixed with a firmware update, but they just refuse to acknlowledge or understand the issue. By contrast, Teche actually did fix the low samplerate issue on its on-board mics with a firmware update on their 3D180VR camera.
X4 internal mic does not sound better than One RS 1" - I will recommand this solution here to use timecode jam sync with professional 32-bit float crazy sample rate RAW audio capture: ruclips.net/video/PklHH4MFWvU/видео.htmlsi=8sOVRtxsPPJioXxD&t=1343
@@hughhou I recall that the One RS core module loses high frequencies so it sounds muffled. The Insta360 X3 sounds better in comparison, not necessarily because the mics are better (it's still tinny) but because it's sampling at a higher rate 48k, so you hear high frequencies better. Didn't you also do a comparison video on this at some point?
The most awesome 360 camera ever would have a multi-mic array that creates an ambisonic mix that aligns itself to the camera orientation via the motion sensor data. Imagine a 360 video with spatial audio where you're free to swing and move the camera around all you like, and the spatial audio would just magically stay aligned. Wouldn't that be something.
the max resolution i can select on youtube is 4k. How can I watch this in 8k?
Not yet. In recent RUclips update (1 week ago), 8K has been SUPER SLOW to process. I reach out to RUclips tech support on this matter as it has been 2 days and still no sign of 8K. It is original Insta360 X4 8K upload (7680 x 3840) so it should be 8K. I will update you when I hear back from RUclips. It is weekend and no one is working which is super frustrated.
Mmmm the RUclipsVR app on my Quest 3 has been updated recently and I have been watching 8K 360 (?) and mainly 180 VR a noticeable improvement in resolution imo. Laurie NZ. 😊

Insta360 should fix that bracketing in a firmware update. Keep the ISO the same, certainly don't up it.
Accroding to Sam, it has been like that since X3, and they never change it. Lots of professional complaints in years but nothing change. B/c I think more non-professionals freaking out of ghosting (which they really should not use HDR) than professional wants shutter brakceting. We just need more voices. But again, my professional community is wayyyy smaller than others influencers consumer community. Our voices is not priority in design these days. It is sad. I hope more people report that.
Seems like 8K is now supported in Chrome browser! How do you colour correct equirectangular images without getting a seem line? It's seems that Camera Raw is no longer 'edge aware' so any colour grading of DNG now produces a seam line. Have they removed 'edge aware' from ACR or is there something else happening. I used to be able to adjust the Highlights / Shadows / Vibrance without any issues, but now i have seam lines! Is Adobe removing more support or is there a work around? I've tried in Affinity but that is also not edge aware.
Did they really remove that? So in this tutorial, I mentioned what version of PS you should keep and just get the BETA for newest feature so you keep TWO version of everything. Older Photoshop/Lightroom for 360 works and BETA for cool AI feature that does not really work on 360 photo anyway. BTW, I color in PTGui now in Photoshop or Lightroom or Camera Raw. I use Camera RAW for individual photo before stitching and then use PGui to grade. I believe PTGui can also color stitched Insta360 photo. You can also use Photoshop offset feature to grade and then offset, then grade again and mask the top layer to the bottom to "path" the stitch line kinda hack but I do this a lot if I need to just fix things in PS for final stage.

I didn't really like the Theta Z1... I mean sure it HDR outside look great, but I wonder if it can't be improved on the X4 if we can force the camera to make the image darker and adjust in post. Resolution does matter, because the Theta might have look great for the outside, the inside I didn't like it so much. The color was ok, but it either the low resolution or the noise that I didn't like.
I like your video, and the format you made this one and how you did the different overlay... It a new feel on how to experience video. (Lose the faceset though ;)
Lol the faceset is my teleprompter and camera control. I can control Insta360 camera via inside the headset. It is easier for me to film myself. I don't have budget for a film crew and doing everything myself - little technology to help to get the job done. Thank you! Yes, Theta resolution is lower indeed. But I don't think I can edit X4 to the same quality as Theta Z1 - and I am really, like really good at Photoshop :)
@@hughhou I guessed as much ;) I kinda wish Google Glass type of tech did get out on the cheap so we could use it for application like this ! Much less intrusive in my view. As for the X4 control, is it better than using the insta360 GPS watch for example ? I personally feel the watch will do a better job for myself. What I mean for the X4 footage, is for having a even less expose image of the outside than the HDR version, so it can be overlay over the inside HDR one. I heard in some other video review there is a setting on the X4 to make it shot so it darker (so adjusting ISO or shutter speed), so combining both image, if possible, could give a better result. I haven't use photoshop since 2002. Mostly just using Gimp (which mean I only crop some images, but I did some tree removal on some pictures, but moved the composition in inkscape afterward for doing movies posters), So I mostly only do do video now, which I do my coloring in Davinci Resolve. Maybe some future AI will allow you to take a picture of a room with a old camera that you like the style, and it will apply all the color of the older camera to a super high resolution brand new camera but have horrible color science and make it look amazing ! Anyway, the future is bright ! Should receive my X4 in 4 days now ! Looking forward giving it a try. Still need to figure out my media issues... But maybe I'll just get myself a bunch of 1TB MicroSD card, and keep a print out of the different clip on each microSD card, and put that chip in my camera or the quick reader... (I keep hoping, insta360 did right and provided a external storage support with folders !!! ). I shot 360 video to make raw memories, not to build a stories (anyway, not yet).
oh yes. The GPS remote control is great! I have it and maybe review it on the next video waiting for firmware support. It has a display on the watch and GPS. GPS overlay is the key and this is the best way - more accurate than Apple Watch without the radiation.

The one thing I'm super happy with is !!!! The Quick Reader unlocked the feature I wanted all along ! Not in a intended way, but I use to my advantage !
If I connect a 4TB SSD via a USB-C Hub to my tablet or phone first, that device get mounted. When I connect the Quick Reader (with or without an sdcard in it), it unlock the Insta360 application to select a folder, and the USB device available is my 4TB External SSD Storage !
It ridiculous that this feature is not standard and they lock you out from doing this, but because they don't (or can't) verify if it the actual MicroSD slow of the reader, I can finally have a large storage to store my video. So the feature I want is done ! It made and work ! They just need to allow it without having the quick reader connected !

I did not shoot with the PanoX2 - the stitching sux in that camera! I can't solve the stitch line and I guess it is a latest firmware bug. I hope PanoX can fix that. It was not like that before.

Yes it is NOT 8K yet. It already took RUclips 2 days to process this video but still NOT 8K yet. Honestly no idea what is going wrong. The 8K AV1 on RUclips just drop a week ago. I am talking to RUclips to figure out for everyone else. It is 8K upload as you can see in Meta Quest 3 of download for Apple Vision Pro. Thank you for being patient when we work out the problem with RUclips. It is weekend and they are not gonna response until Monday.

Your video is blurry as fudge. This is not a good reference. I saw super crisp X4 footage. I don't understand why yours are so shifty.
Okay let me explain. First very good question. If you are new to the channel and saw other reviews, here is the major different: We show case Insta360 X4 in what it supposed to be - an 360 camera. It capture 360 video and we upload the 360 video. We are one of the biggest 360 / Immersive Filmmaking channels out there who do professional works for brands like Meta, Canon, Google and etc.
Since this is a 8K 360 video upload from Insta360 X4 with correct metadata, this video is interactive. If you pan around your phone, the video move. Now try it. Pretty nut right? If you are on a computer, drag your mouse and see all around you! Even crazier, you can watch this video using Meta Quest 3, Apple Vision Pro or any head mounted display in true VR - which is the future of storytelling I believe.
No reviewers on RUclips right now dare to upload this format (at least not the big one). Most of them only know how to reframe for social media like TikTok or IG Reel - which is another big use of 360 cameras. If you want to venture into the TRUE potential of 360 cameras - like Virtual Tour, Immersive 360 video for Meta Quest 3, Vision Pro, TikTok Pico, etc, this is the video for you to see the unaltered image quality of Insta360 X4. As almost ALL reframed videos are altered by the creators - and it has to be as you can NOT showcase them in 2D screen without fisheye undistortion aka reframing - using Insta360 App, Studio V5, GoPro FX Reframe, Davinci Resolve Reframe plugins we helped build and etc.
Now if you get part 1 why we show case in this format, now let's talk about the "blurry as fudge" reason. First, did you set your RUclips players to the highest resolution like in 2160P or the upcoming 4320P (true 8K)? Currently, RUclips still has not processed this video in 8K, sadly. That is a RUclips problem, and hopefully, it will soon be available in AV1 4320P - which is the original intended quality. But if you download this video and see it on Apple Vision Pro, then it is true 8K.
Now even you are in 8K, it is still NOT as sharp as 2D as the pixels is being stretch in full 360, you are looking at 720P windows in a giving time. We called it the magic windows. Well, maybe 1080P now with 8K when RUclips process successfully. But still not 4K and nowhere compared to regular RUclips 4K flat upload. But please do not discredit the quality as it look amazing in VR and what is the future of display with the movement of Vision Pro and Quest 3.
I hope this very long explanation helps explain the problem of "blurry as fudge" compared to what you saw on the Internet. We pride ourselves on "honest" reviews of what the tech is supposed to be. So, 360 cameras should be reviewed in 360 video. And if it looks blurry to you, it is probably blurry at the source level, and this is what you are getting.
Again, RUclips still have not processed this in 8K yet so please wait a day or two, come back to see the real 8K quality. Cheers!
