I like these game analysis, please more of them! Wouldn't even mind if they were a bit longer (although here admittedly it's quite a short game anyway). And there *are* people outside the UK who know who Jimmy White is! ;-) Are you a snooker fan, Simon?
+Simon Williams (Ginger GM) I was curious and analyzed the position after Rf8, and I believe I found a promising continuation in 20.Qd6! instead of your suggested 20.f4: 17...Rf8! 18.Re3 Kg8 19.Rh3 Qg5 20.Qd6! Rf7 (20...Nf5 21.Bxf5 Rxf5 22.f4 +- ) 21.Rd1 Nd5 (Idea: 21...-- 22.Qd8+ Rf8 23.Qxf8+ Kxf8 24.Rd8+ Kf7 25.Rxh7# ) 22.Rf3 A) 22...Rxf3? 23.Bxf3 Qe7 (Idea: 23...-- 24.cxd5 exd5 25.Bxd5+ cxd5 26.Qxd5+ Kf8 27.Bd6+ +- ) 24.Rxd5! Kf7 25.Rd4 +-; B) 22...Qe7 23.Qxc6 Rxf3 24.Qxa8 Rf8 25.cxd5+-; C) Best is 22...Nc5 23.cxd5 exd5 24.Rxf7 Kxf7 25.Qxc6 and White is better.
Apparently this is the Semi-Slav opening, Marshall Gambit variation. (Though I'm not certain about that, because I think the moves Nf3 and Nf6 are played in the Semi-Slav.)
*1.Bf4* looks strong, but maybe after *1...Qf8* Black escapes. As Simon said, always look for the most forcing move (which is usually a check). *1.Qh8+ Kf7 2.Qe8+ Ke8 3.Bg7+* (or *Bf4+*) trading down into an exchange-up ending. All the moves are checks, so Black's replies are forced--unlike with *1.Bf4*, when Black has options.
Seriously dude, how old are you really? To have a good time in Hackney it had to have been in the 60s, or post 2005. The only fun to be had in Hackney in between those years were robbing people or visiting one of the crackhouses!
1.Qh8+ Kf7 2.Qxe8+ Kxe8 3. Bf4+ Kf7 4.Bxh6 looks forcing and strong, right? Was that the correct way to play?
Thanks for the really interesting and entertaining analysis :). Definitely gonna try that idea against the Finger!!
Hello Simon, hope you had a great Holiday ! Welcome back and congrats on your 2600 rating. Can't wait to catch you on twitch again.
+Simon Williams (Ginger GM) Great stuff, looking forward to that, thanks for the heads up
You're our 'favourite' GM Ginge.

Should read FRAVOURITE
You drink the aperitif before the meal and the digestif after :)
After some aperitif, right?

That grand move white Ne5+ I call Using Up the Guard. See how, assuming it is taken, the move sharpens the strength of the bishop.
Qh8+, kf7, QxR, KxQ, Bg7 discovered check by the rook to win the queen
Did you play Bf4 at the end?
I was playing on easter weekend too, I came second ! I'm also 36 when were you born old man !
I'm guessing it was Qh8+ Kf7, Qxe8+ Kxe8, Bf4+
That's the line I saw, except Bg7 at the end.
You had this same opening in another recent tournament, right?
Did u play GM Fodor Tamás?
Simon, you're over 2600 now. Do I still see that bun? I don't Adam & Eve it!!!
I thought you were cutting it off when over 2600?
hey buddy! Great job with 3rd place. wish I could do that. keep yo head up and drink. a fat shot. ;)
@Simon Williams why???? not "Q TAKES ON G2" I THINK ITS THE BEST MOVE
+Simon Williams (Ginger GM) after your move Be2
H-hackney? Where on earth is that? Do you mean "Ackney", old chap?
Marshal gambit or Semi Slav?
Apparently this is the Semi-Slav opening, Marshall Gambit variation.
(Though I'm not certain about that, because I think the moves Nf3 and Nf6 are played in the Semi-Slav.)
I think Bf4 is a winning move.
Looking at the other comments I realized that the sequence with check on h8 followed by taking on e8 and discovery is much better.
