  • Grandmaster Analysis of one of my recent games against Alex Longson. In this game I played an opening that is quickly becoming my main weapon against 1 e4. Tiger's Modern; a very exciting opening which is a great way to play for a win with Black.

    Simon I've been a Huge Fan for several years and loved the way you presented this game so much that I've watched it X3 now and have saved it to my Chess File. Thank You so much for another outstanding instructional video on an opening so dynamic and popular. Loved your explanations on personal reasoning during he match! A+ material here. As Always Friend Blessings from Oregon. ... Mike.

    @29:27 a smoother win is Be5 (instead of Qc3+). Threatens Bxd4# and white can only defend it with Rhd1 (but then Qxd1+ and black immediately wins both rooks).

    Simon, at 22:20 in your variation after 23.Ba5 Rxb2! 24.Kxb2, the winning continuation is 24...Qb8 25.Kc1 (alternatives lose the Queen to discoveries) 25...Bf4+ 26.Rd2 (everything else leads to quick checkmate) 26...Qb3, winning the house.
    I was curious and looked over the game with Stockfish running, I don't want to pretend this was my own idea :)
    Great game, cheers!

    I first learned of the G6 opening when I was a kid. The first chess book I ever bought was 'Steve Davis Plays Chess' in which David Norwood taught him to play at tournament level. I would highly recommend it as a way to encourage English kids to play with a familiar face they've seen off the tele.

    In the position at 24:00 , might it be possible to play Kb1 with White? The idea is ...Qxc4 Qd2 (it seems essential for the white king to stay on b1, the only square where you can even dream about safety) Qb3 Qb2 seems to hold for the moment, as Rb8 can always be blocked with Bb4. I didn't check this with the engine to leave some fun in it, so if anybody has an idea, please challenge this setup! :) Great game btw!

    GG! I've heard from 2 titled friends that Tiger's Modern (3... a6) is so sharp that it's addictive :D (I used to play 3... c5 instead in my repertoire.) Also, thanks for boosting my confidence as @26:48, the correct move came to my mind instantly as the first candidate to consider. Apparently, I've become a bit better at pattern recognition over the last year.

    A bit of pedantry about the naming @2:24: 1. 'Pirc' is pronounced as follows: ruclips.net/video/N2stSGDgnaU/видео.html
    2. Afaik, the name 'Pirc Defence' is applied only to those move orders where Black plays g6, d6, Nf6 (without e5) within the first 4 or so moves *and* White plays Nc3 without c4. (The most common move order is 1. e4 d6 2. d4 Nf6 3. Nc3 g6.)
    The name 'Modern Defence' is applicable to any system where Black fianchettoes on g7 (without occupying the centre with a pawn) but *delays* Nf6 (to defend h6 twice like you said, but more importantly, to keep the big diagonal open for the bishop) that isn't a transposition to the (Hyper-)Accelerated Dragon Sicilian nor to the King's Indian.
    These openings are obviously closely related but the names aren't synonyms.

    • @clarknova690

      The erroneous naming bothered me as well. It's needlesly confusing people who want to explore the opening further.

    Dear Sir Simon Williams,
    Huge fan of your work and commentating prowess as well as your overall entertaining demeanor. A few questions which pertains to the "Tiger's Modern defense".
    a) When will your DVD on the defense be available ?
    b) Do you offer an option where one can Download the video content instead of purchasing the DVD ? ( I haven't used a DVD player in ages!!
    c) I was contemplating purchasing Tiger Hillarp Perssons book "The Modern Tiger" but I'm always skeptical of purchasing books since opening theory changes every other week in the chess world. Should I give it a go nonetheless ?
    Thank you for your time and continued success.

    simon, in your analysis of the white queen coming to g4, why not play f5 forking the white bishop and queen? he would take your knight with check you take back with the bishop and then he moves his queen in which you could move your bishop back to g7 and i think you are ok in that position.

    What if White plays Bh6 instead of o-o-o, preventing the black king from castling?

    • @pianosRepic
      @pianosRepic 8 лет назад

      Personally I would play Bxc3 and Rg8 with the idea of g5 possibly, the c-pawns are a good source of counterplay and blacks king appears reasonably safe to me because of the central pawn majority covering it and having pieces around. Also black's remaining bishop is godlike.

    Speaking of Tiger's Modern, here's another entertaining example, one at the super-GM level: the Armageddon tiebreak game of the match between Wei Yi and Richard Rapport: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1849825 I guess, Tiger didn't have a chance to mention it on the DVD - it was played on Dec 23, 2016.

    • @UnXPLO1Table
      @UnXPLO1Table 8 лет назад

      That game hints that 1... g6 2... Bg7 3... a6!? is a bit more precise a move order than 3... d6 4... a6!?. The former allows Black to meet 4. f4 & 4. h4 with 4... d5(!) (which works vs 1. e4 2. d4 3. Nc3 as well as vs 3. c4). White's other common 4th moves (Be3, a4, Nf3) after 3. Nc3 can still be met with 4... d6, and so can 4. e5?!.

    • @UnXPLO1Table
      @UnXPLO1Table 8 лет назад

      Musing more on the move order, 1... a6 is fine to troll casual opponents :D, but the thing is that the early a6 is optimal vs Nc3 only. Vs 1. e4 g6 2. d4 Bg7 3. c4, Black has a couple of seemingly better options, in my impression.
      One is 3... Nc6 intending 4... e5 5. d5 Nd4, basically, a KID on steroids (Black normally doesn't get an outpost on d4 in the usual KID). If White exchanges on d4, Black will have a passed pawn there supported by the g7 bishop and will then put a pawn on c5 in order to allow his knight to come to f6 interposing the bishop (though Nh6-g4 is sometimes an option too).
      Another one, offbeat, is a gambit: 3... e6!? 4. Nc3 Ne7 5. Nf3 d5!? 6. e5 c5!? 7. dxc5 Nd7; 6. cxd5 exd5 7. exd5 c6!?.

    How much time do you normally spend at calculating so deeply in such complex positions so well? What I do is I calculate for 10 minutes but can't quite see as many critical variations as you do, so I get nervous and play quick moves which are basically intuition and which are often mistakes.
    My move at the critical moment of this game was Bf4, Correct!
    Very nice game.
