I agree. When a group is made to be a counter culture, it ruins everything for everyone originally in it when that culture becomes mainstream. Slipknot had a few songs tht were actually agressive, but it’s not even close to the amount of just pure brutality youd experience with bands like Deicide, Behemoth, Dark Throne, Gorguts, Bolt Thrower, Obituary, etc. two totally different worlds and two totally different fucking crowds. I have a simple system for weeding out shitty gay bands, even if they're lumped into the metal category for some reason. If the name is an actual phrase or contains MY - avoid. E.g. My dying bride, bring me the horizon. Question - have you ever encountered a band that you didn't want to check out just because of the name, but then discovered it was great? I stayed away from Aura Noir for quite a while cause it just sounded kinda goth to me. Obviously when I did overcome the aversion i realised that boy, was I wrong...

Today's gateway bands are the same as they have been for the past 30 to 50 years: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Deep Purple, Pantera, Motorhead, Slayer etc. These are gateway metal bands. Slipknot & all of those other gay bands are a completely different genre of music, they are not metal at all. If some of the Slipknot guys were really into death & thrash metal, they would still be playing it. They were probably in those bands, just to be in a band.
Not necessarily man...90s Deicide (Once Upon The Cross + Serpents of the Light) had simplistic and typical songwriting structures. Lots of respectable bands did actually, I think it's really all about the riff and the more 'low-brow' aggression put into the music. If someone considers Judas Priest a 'metal band'...they really weren't too far off from being a pop band (they just had heavier guitars and vocals for their time).

I saw hate forest in 2019...they barely moved and just stormed through their set. It was awesome. We came for the music and we're not disappointed

Deathcore and Metalcore bands are the current bands like Korn and Slipknot. Those bands are what the kids think are cool.
