The Tamron is costing twice as much as the Samyang. The budget is the big determining factor, especially for people who already own lens like the Sigma 16mm or the Tamron 17-70mm.
Awesome comparison as always Arthur and thanks for sharing. Question... Will you be doing a comparision of the Sony ZV-E10 and the Sony A6400 / 6100 at all in the near future ?
Was thinking the same! Have the 17-70 and Sigma 56 and the Samyang would be nice for the ultra wide landscape/architecture needs. Would love the Tamron 11-20 but price point of the Samyang is hard to overcome
I agree for focal length combination, but the problem is that you have different colour casts from Sigma, Samyang and Tamron. Try to replicate the look between those lenses it is really hard to perfectly colour match the photos from lens to lens. Say if you shoot a day out with a sigma 30 and samyang 12, you get completely different look with the same fixed WB and camera profile. Sigma has a cooler look and Samyang has a slight warmish/green cast with more contrast on top. Tamron is somewhere in the middle, but as you see in this video the difference is really notable.
Had tamron 17-70, sold it after few weeks of testing, so many shots devoured by huge CA & busy bokeh. If someone have sigma trio, I would suggest to never try to replace with any aps-c zoom, cause quality difference is devastating...
Small suggestion (from someone who likes the channel, so I'm not being a critic): make it clearer at the beginning whether the lens or lenses being reviewed are APS-C or full frame. Lacking that, viewers have to wait until the camera body (here the 6100) is shown.
I own a Samyang 12 af, and I recognize three clear points: 1. The CA problem is quite bad, even the in-body or post correction does not solve it completely. 2. The image quality is really inferior to my 16-55G: less sharp and contrast. 3. The lens “breaths” quite clearly when it does the focus. The pros is the lightweight and good price.
It says a lot about the quality of the Tamron that it essentially holds its own against a prime. I have a a6400 & have been waiting for a far better wide angle zoom than the Sony 10-18- not worth the money. It now appears that Tamron have filled the wide angle zoom "gap".
Great comparison! I will replace my 12mm f/2,0 MF-version, which has served me well for many years, with this new AF-version pretty soon! But it`s not just "same glass, new wrapping" The aperture has increased from six, to seven blades (nicer sun-star), and, according to other tests I have seen, flare resistance has been improved, and that`s a welcoming improvement!😀
Great review! I have the original MF Samyang 12mm but I do see the benefit of the Tamron as it covers a wider focal range, basically 3 lenses in one - 12mm / 16mm / 20mm. Any chance to compare with say the Sigma 16mm 1.4 and the Sony 20mm 2.8 or Sony Zeiss 24mm 1.8?
Great video as always ... I'm still looking for a vlogging comparison that has some low light shots, the Samyang seems considerably brighter even at the same aperture, not considering the F2, I guess I need mostly a video comparison ... I own and love the 17-70, using a step down ring for my filters in the Samyang is an annoyance and I won't be able to use the lens hood, in the other hand the price difference is huge, there's the versatility from 11-20 I mean you can still take 30mm FF equivalent photos for vlogging 11mm is in the open position so a bit closer I think that may even out to the 12mm in terms of focal length... So many things to consider. Is that difference in AF performance relevant for video ... I really can't make my mind between those 2
Lens hood isn't that big deal on a UWA. Tamron is definitely overpriced imo since it costs the same as the FF 17-28. If you already have the 17-70 and is on a budget, get the Samyang.
Arthur, you are well known as an APSC creator, why are you not getting a ZV-E10 for review and testing? I'm sure you have "graduated" from APSC but many of us APSC users are still craving for you to come up with those contents.
Hey Arthur, can you make a full vlog style video with the Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 to see how it would perform and what type of shots you can get out of it?
Both lens look great. Tamron gives flexibility of zoom for premium price. It's interesting to observe the maybe suprising advantages of dslm cameras in the wide-ultrawide range compared to phone cameras.
It was my phone that got me into ultra-wide photography. Now I'm looking for a lens for my APS-C. I think the sweet spot is around 12mm but zooms are as good as primes in the ultra-wide range.
I picked up the Loawa 9mm over the Samyang for real estate photos. I couldn’t afford the Tamron at $800 I also couldn’t wait. But I honestly love my Tamron 17-70 I would love to have both Tamrons for my kit. But 9mm is so nice for interiors of small places.
I have the Samyang af version. Choose it for price, size and f2. However, in bright conditions shooting against the light the Samyang gets a very washed out low contrast look that is surprisingly hard to fix in post. I shot with this and the Sigma 35 f1.2 on the same event. IQ, colors and contrast were like night and day. Sure few lenses can hold their own against the Sigma1.2 but the Samyang was not even in the ball park so I stopped using it for events and have a hard time recommending it.
Do you still have the Sony 20mm? How does the sharpness and color of the tamron compare to the sony at 20mm ? Just "upgraded" into the super compact zv e10 from an A7iii and the 20mm has been my favorite go to lens. If they have similar image quality it would be the perfect match to my dream camera :)
Waiting for your video on manual focus lenses for portraits. You have lot of lenses to review in your 50mm collection. Please make videos on those portrait lenses.

Hi Arthur, how does this 12mmf2 lens in apsc camera compare with sanyang 18mmf1.8 in FF camera? it theoretically would have some pov, but really curious about the distortion comparison
I think i will chose the samyang since it is half the price in my country and those few extra mm of focal lenght are not worth it spending +400 $. At least for me.
I still can't decide which lens to buy. I need good lens for apartment / hotels, and Tamron lens is wider 1mm than Samyang lens, but Samyang lens have f2 which is better for video. I have sigma 16mm,but I need wider lens. Ma camera is Sony a6500 (aps-c). Please help me
Loved the video. Could you do a video comparison between the 2 lenses? I’m in the market for a wide angle for the Sony ZV-e10 for Vlogging. So I’m torn between the 2 since the Tamron is double the price of the Samyang. Also curious about AF differences for all kinds of video in low light between the 2. Thanks again for these great videos! 🙌🏼
Hi Arthur, hope you are good, we are waiting for comparison of 12mm samyung Af vs sigma 16mm. As we all know sigma is too good in that range let test out how samyung perform.
Hey! I always wondered what weather sealed in the world of cameras and lenses. There are many discouraging sources on youtube that it is not really a life insurance. Can you describe what kind of weather can beare a sony A 6400 and a weather sealed sigma lense? Thanks in advance :)
The Samyang seems to produce better skin tones. Tamron looks a bit more magenta. AF performance on these ultra wides is not as important. The tamron appears to have a slightly magenta cast, which adds up to my A6100 magenta cast on skin tones compared to my Nikon Z5. I have the Sony 10-18, but I find the f4 max aperture a bit limiting. I am considering the samyang and probably sell the Sony.
Hello y have a sony 6600 and sell my 10-18 f4 and samyang 12m f2 and buy the tamron 11 20 f2.8 . y have happy with the results in foto and video with tamron 11 20. y have too the sony 16 55 f2.8 for my the perfect.
@@ArthurR a good idea to sell the Sony zoom for the Samyang or selling the Samyang and Sony for the Tamron? I have the 16-55 anyways, when i use the ultrawide, I just need the wide end. Other option is if there is a Rokinon 20mm for Nikon Z mount. I like the Sony for action or crowded assignments, but I really like the Nikon Z colors way better for portraits, video (and way smoother IBIS/OSS/VR than Sony). But Sony has a better Eye AF and AFC in chaotic situations
Very thorough reviews, thank you Arthur! Any idea when Sony will bring out an ultra wide angle G lens for its APS-C line? We‘ve got the fantastic 16-55 G and 70-350 G. Surely they can‘t be far off…? Would love to hear your thoughts, thank you 🙏
I shoot mostly landscape photo and video so I shoot mostly at f8-f16. An example would be a beautiful wildflower 4 inches from the lens, then a lake in middle ground and a big mountain in the close background. I want it all as sharp as possible so I’ll start at f11 and shoot up to f22) The fear of course is diffraction, so it would be helpful to see those test shots at high f-stops testing for diffraction. Of course I could focus stack, but I guess I am a purist and want it as all good in the camera as I can get it. Also, that isn’t an option for video. Not everyone wants an out of focus background!

Hi it's me again! today I replayed your video because I am still searching about an ultra wide angle lens for my Sony ZV-E10 camera for indoor Real Estate videography, another problem is in my country that I couldn't find any ultra wide angle lens also Amazon services is not available in our region I have to tell someone who's coming to my country to bring with himself what I want for my camera and I can't change if I order wrong lens. I need your help and please let me know that are you still satisfied with the Samsung 12mm lens with Sony ZV-E10 camera ? During searching about ultra wide angle lens I have found Samsung 12mm and Tamron 11-20mm for above mentioned camera but I read the review and feedback of the people whose using the two above mentioned lenses most of them serious complaint about problems of the two lenses now I am really confused what should I do which ultra wide angle lens is suitable for my camera I have used the Sigma 16mm lens and that is not suitable for my work now it's humble request to guide me if we compare these 3 lenses which one is good working with Sony ZV-E10 camera 1. Rokinon 12mm 2. Samyang 12mm 3. Tamron 11-20mm ? I am waiting for your reply
Excellent review, I am interested in these. Thanks. While I like the zoom range of the Tamron, it's just too much $$. Apparently the Samyang's sharpness is adequate, and I like the one-stop advantage. Gotta go Samyang, I think.
@@ArthurR thank you :) You wouldn't believe how many stores - including Amazon - only say "E-mount" - without a hint if its "FE" or "E", and most of the time you look for the "Full Frame" moniker without luck, even if you already know its FE. I think I spent 10 minutes on the web, just to make sure if a Sony 85mm F1.8 was FE or not. Seems stupid especially for online stores - its only going to increase returns... And my A7C complains, that my APS-C 20mm pancake is "incompatible" I suppose its just a setting I haven't looked for yet... /rant :)
Hey Arthur, great comparison as always! I am kind of stuck though deciding what lens to buy next regarding (ultra)wides. I started out with the 18-135 as one-in-all lense. Then I bought the Sigma 56 and 30 and my next purchase would have been the sigma 16. But ever since the 16-55 came out, I want to replace my 18-135 for it (in the longterm) and now I am questioning myself: if I will purchase the 16-55 anyways, is it smarter to get the samyang 12 or even the laowa 9 instead of the sigma 16? Since I'm not doing low light shots indoors the aperture difference doesn't matter to me, it's rather about the focal length and the "redundancy" auf the whole sigma trio and the (super expensive) sony 16-55. Thanks a lot if you find the time to answer and for the best Sony APS-C shooter content on RUclips! Greetings from Munich, Germany! 🤗
You should pick up the 16-55G, it’s a gem! I sold my 18 135 and was shocked with 16-55G, it is much better in everything except for the shorter max focal length. If I was you, just look for an used 16-55G at around 800€ on EBay from somebody who just want to marry the new FF system, you will be happy. I also own a Samyang 12 af, but I tried once make a comparison with 16-55G in terms of the image quality, I felt really disappointed with the Samyang: much less sharp and contrast, ugly color rendering (compared to 16-55G).
Does Tamron pop exist? Samyang looked so flat in comparison, though the colors were definitely more vibrant. Difference in brightness was also very surprising comparing the two at the same f-stop.
I used the MF Samyang 12mm /2.0 and liked its IQ. However, The Tamron is far more versatile. Shooting at 20mm gives me a 30mm equivalent which is in the wide angle range and not UWA... I almost always shoot these lenses stopped down so, the one stop difference is no game changer for me...
Both lenses are adequately sharp but the Samyang's color is much better in my opinion. Loving your reviews by the way. I recently switched to a Sony A6400 from a Nikon system due to tendonitis making it hard to handle the bigger cameras. So far, I'm actually very surprised at the image quality of the Sony A6000 series. I really appreciate the videos helping me make decisions.
Tamron have much nicer color tone...Samyang is more on warmer yellowish side...Tamron is better lens sharper with better contrast. Interesting would be comparison between Fuji 10-24 vs this Tamron .
Thank you for the video, Arthur. The Tamron is the clear winner for me in terms of image quality. Not having to be too careful while using a lens (as to avoid the shortcomings, for example the CA, flaring etc) plus the time saved in post to counter those problems when they arise is definitely a big plus to me. Having said that, the pricing on this Tamron (usd 845 in my country) is still a bit hard to swallow. 😅

For me the pricedifference is not important, the versatality means more. 10-24 would be even better, but that would make it much bigger and more expensive (or f4). Landscape photographers with full frame use a 16-35 and 70-200 (or 100-400) and nothing in between.
A little weaker video than normal. Focus feels "less updated" than Tamron? What does that mean? There were no real tangible details about what makes Samyang's focus inferior. At the end, comparing each lens - no mention that the Tamron is a zoom! So there's a large advantage not mentioned. But also Samyang is f2.0 and Tamron is f2.8 - another advantage not mentioned in the summary. Come on, Arthur!
I'd love to see an astrophotography comparison.

Samyang 12mm f2 and the tamrom 17-70mm is a great combo lens
Throw in the sigma 56mm for portraits and ur good to go

I'm waiting for comparison between Samyang 12 f2 (af) and Laowa 9mm f2.8
Will the samyang lens work on sony zv e10?
Samyang 12m f2 manual vs AF version?
You can use the video Sony a6300 vs Nikon d7200 🙏🙏🙏
Either of these over the Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D Ultrawide Lens
Hi it's me again!
today I replayed your video because I am still searching about an ultra wide angle lens for my Sony ZV-E10 camera for indoor Real Estate videography, another problem is in my country that I couldn't find any ultra wide angle lens also Amazon services is not available in our region I have to tell someone who's coming to my country to bring with himself what I want for my camera and I can't change if I order wrong lens.
I need your help and please let me know that are you still satisfied with the Samsung 12mm lens with Sony ZV-E10 camera ?
During searching about ultra wide angle lens I have found Samsung 12mm and Tamron 11-20mm for above mentioned camera but I read the review and feedback of the people whose using the two above mentioned lenses most of them serious complaint about problems of the two lenses now I am really confused what should I do which ultra wide angle lens is suitable for my camera I have used the Sigma 16mm lens and that is not suitable for my work now it's humble request to guide me if we compare these 3 lenses which one is good working with Sony ZV-E10 camera
1. Rokinon 12mm
2. Samyang 12mm
3. Tamron 11-20mm
?
I am waiting for your reply
Nice comparation
Please Compare with sigma 16mm
Excellent review, I am interested in these. Thanks. While I like the zoom range of the Tamron, it's just too much $$.
Apparently the Samyang's sharpness is adequate, and I like the one-stop advantage. Gotta go Samyang, I think.
Is the Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 a full frame lens?
No, APSC only.
@@ArthurR thank you :)
You wouldn't believe how many stores - including Amazon - only say "E-mount" - without a hint if its "FE" or "E", and most of the time you look for the "Full Frame" moniker without luck, even if you already know its FE. I think I spent 10 minutes on the web, just to make sure if a Sony 85mm F1.8 was FE or not.
Seems stupid especially for online stores - its only going to increase returns...
And my A7C complains, that my APS-C 20mm pancake is "incompatible"
I suppose its just a setting I haven't looked for yet...
Watching form JAMAICA
The Tamron is on a sale now, for sure due to the new Sony wide angle lenses introduced. Much better value now.
omg liked in the intro of video !!
I was thinking of getting laowa 9mm and this new review dragged me but again end off with no oss !!
Thank you! Greetings!
Lol, they just slapped on an af motor, if it where only that simple. Props to the progress Samyang has made in a short time.
Does Tamron pop exist? Samyang looked so flat in comparison, though the colors were definitely more vibrant. Difference in brightness was also very surprising comparing the two at the same f-stop.
You always mis one of the very important comparison. the focal lenght. i wanted to see the difference of 11mm and 12mm.
I used the MF Samyang 12mm /2.0 and liked its IQ. However, The Tamron is far more versatile. Shooting at 20mm gives me a 30mm equivalent which is in the wide angle range and not UWA... I almost always shoot these lenses stopped down so, the one stop difference is no game changer for me...
tamron 11-20 vs zeiss touit 12mm PLEASEEEEEEEEE!!!
Nice comparison video. I would be helpful if you mentioned that they're APS-C or Fullframe.
First! 😁
But honestly, thanks for this video - I really want to go for the wide lens for my A6400, however cannot decide which one!
@@dainisnazinskis9917 Y have The sony 6600. Y sell my samyang 12m f2.0 and my sony 10-18, and buy tamron 11 20. Y am very happy with the results the tamron in foto and video. y have too the sony 16 55 2.8. for me two perfect lens.
samyang green really looks a lot better in almost every shot imo
$800 for an apsc is too much imo. I would go with samyang
Don't mind me, just crying in Canon EF-M..
Hello Arthur. Nice video. Y have the sony 6600 and sell my sony 10 18 f4 and old samyang 12m f2, and buy the tamron 11 20. y am very happy with the results of tamron in foto and video. Y have too the sony 16 55 2.8. this camera and this two lenses are perfect for me. Thanks for your reviews.
コントラストはTamron、、解像度とシャープさはサムヤンなのだろう…単焦点だし😢サムヤンの有利かなぁ〜
For me the pricedifference is not important, the versatality means more. 10-24 would be even better, but that would make it much bigger and more expensive (or f4).
Landscape photographers with full frame use a 16-35 and 70-200 (or 100-400) and nothing in between.
2x the price here
Samyang brighter T stop
A little weaker video than normal. Focus feels "less updated" than Tamron? What does that mean? There were no real tangible details about what makes Samyang's focus inferior. At the end, comparing each lens - no mention that the Tamron is a zoom! So there's a large advantage not mentioned. But also Samyang is f2.0 and Tamron is f2.8 - another advantage not mentioned in the summary. Come on, Arthur!
You have beautiful wife
And the winner is: Sigma 1.4 DC DN
tamron will die soon as they now only make A mount lenses, where is the freaking Z mount and R mount?
