After using this lens for about a year, I have noticed a few things: This lens tend to render the images slightly warmer compared to Sony lenses (Sony lenses are more accurate and neutral) - tests done with WB set to ‘daylight’. Compared to Sony lenses, the Tamron will consistently take a slightly darker exposure (tested on semi auto modes, haven’t tried comparing in fully manual yet) I’ve also noticed that at 16mm the Tamron yields a narrower FOV compared to the Sony 16-55g at 16mm. (EXIF data on both registered 16mm) Lastly, this lens is quite prone to flaring even with the hood on, so users should be careful when shooting towards the light. All in all, I still think this lens gives the best balance between IQ, range, size/weight and price compared to other offerings we have currently.
@@MrHEPBO3AH I don’t have any experience with the Sony 10-20, so I can’t compare. The Tamron 11-20 has good CA resistance IMO. Sure, the edges has a bit of CA at wide apertures, but it’s very slight - not something that annoys me in real world usage. The LoCA on the other hand, is quite strong.. so if shooting at close distances (the lens is very much capable in this regard), the aperture needs to be stopped down quite a bit - particularly if you’re using the wide end of the zoom range.
This has quickly become my favorite walk around + travel lens, and more or less lives on my camera now. Ultra wide at 11 is great for landscapes, close quarters, and selfies, and the 20mm is great for street and travel. Not to mention when you take Sony's clear image zoom into account, with that 2x on the 20mm end, you basically get a lens that stretches all the way from 11 to 40mm, and at f2.8. I have a few lenses including a couple zooms and primes, but for my casual day to day, seems more often than not I end up grabbing the Tamron.
good thing I waited. Price has gone down to around U$570 in our country, brand new. It is very sharp corner to corner at all focal lengths, wide open. It may not be as sharp in the corners really, but the drop in sharpness is minimal even wide open. this is my new walk-about lens. it's a 15.5-30mm in 35FF. I wish it were 35mm equiv, but 30mm is still ok. With clear image zoom, the longest fl now is 60mm. Not bad. The only downside is that it zooms very slowly at clear image zoom vs a true sony lens. IBIS or IS is just fine if you have it. But this seems stable enough at 11mm without them. Even shooting in video while walking. It's not 100% perfect but if you are careful, and it won't shake a lot or at all.
I bought this lens for my Sony a7iv and you can use it in full frame mode. With the active stabilization you have a great 13 mm lens 🙂 from 13 to 23 in full frame mode. Is great 🙂 and f2.8. fantastic
I wasn't sure which choose for Fuji. Sigma 10-18 or Tamron 11-20. I choose Tamron because of weather sealing. I use my gear on snowy and rainy weather so it its important factor.
I’ve just got this lens and I have the sony a6400 camera body. Your shots look amazing but every time I film the background is doing the weird pulsing, almost as if it can't focus but it doesn't do it to the main subject. I’ve tried looking online but can’t find anything about it. Do you have any idea what it could be?
Hello. Will you be reviewing the new Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2? Also, what about the upcoming Rokinon/Samyang 24-70mm f/2.8 parfocal zoom lens? Thanks!
About the full frame test. Isn’t it then like the Sony 10-18? In that one you could use it full frame without cropped mode, removing all the heavy vigneting at around 12-13 mm. In this one you have the vigneting even zooming all the way? I mean without using the cropped mode
do you think you could temporarily remove the rear baffle and then put this lens on Full Frame camera and see if image coverage becomes bigger? From the picture you showed in the review it seems like the lens could have full frame coverage from 13mm onwards
I need an ultra wide angle lens for indoor Real Estate videography with Sony ZV-E10 camera, what do suggest which lens is wider and a good choice for my work, Tamron 11-20mm or Samyang 12mm, Tamron is more expensive in my country but if it's a better than I'll manage please advise ?
The Tamron is a little wider and will give you the choice to zoom in . In full frame numbers that is a 16-30mm perfect for Real Estate videos. Just ordered to pair it with the A7iv that has a crop of 1.5 in 4K 60 for my Real Estate videos
I just bought this lens to replace my Sigma 16mm f1.4.. Those 5mm really makes a difference (about 40% wider horizontally compared to 16mm) The 12mm samyang is not that much different compared to 11mm on this tamron; but the flexibility you’d get with a zoom lens is important IMO - more options for framing your shots, as well as controlling the perspective/ distortion.
Never use apsc lenses on fullframe camera,it makes you full frame camera practically an apsc camera, your 24 mp camera becomes 6mp,and also gives 2.25 times more noise, and also like you said, they have heavy vignette because the lens just isnt big enough for full frame
Maybe this is a odd question, but If I have to choose one from Tamron 11-20mm f2.8 vs Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, which one should I go for ? My requirements are travel photography, portraits of my daughter/wife and landscapes like mountains/ponds. Also I visit to cities in night so I take pics of architecture buildings that are glowed in night.
Which one do you do most of? The 18 mm is often not wide enough for landscapes and architectute. But 18 to 50 is a much better portrait lens. You can do portraits with 20 mm but you have to like the stretched look compared to a compressed longer focal length.
@@anonymousl5150 So I travel with my family and try to click their pics along with some good background. Background may be mountains, architecture, beach, lakes etc.
@@zerocoolsam5453 Tamron 11-20 might be a safer pick for you. And maybe a Sigma 56 as a backup if you can afford it, very sharp and compact for portraits.
on the fence about getting this one or keeping my 10-18mm light setup since i always shoot in F8 anyways . Waiting for your review for the olf 10-18 compared to this one !
That depends on whether you’ve got a good copy of that 10-18 or not. Personally, I prefer a smaller & lighter setup. But, if you’re curious what you’ll be getting with the tamron: This lens is fairly sharp in the middle wide open at all focal lengths. At 16mm it’s sharp corner to corner at f2.8. At other focal lengths, corner sharpness can be had starting at f4. So I would say this lens is very easy to use, meaning to say that you don’t need to worry much what settings to avoid to get good image quality - just pick the focal length suitable for the scene and choose the aperture for your intended dof, and snap away. In terms of weight, this tamron is quite light, but in terms of size, I would say it’s a bit chunky compared to the 10-18 (even more so with the hood attached)
After nine month again I am waiting your video and read my past question my new question is now what do you think about the new Sony 11mm 8.1 Vs Tamron 11-20mm lens for indoor real estate videography with Sony ZV-E10
Corner sharpness at 11mm is disappointing considering the lens price as a third party. I wonder why none of Tamron's apsc lenses dn't have it's fullframe lenses great quality. Now I'd like to see the performance of the old Sony 10-18 f4 on this brutal test chart! Well done Chris.
Hi @christopherfrost , thanks for your review. I have a big doubt. I would like to buy a wide angle for my aps-c cam and I don't know whether to choose the 11-20mm 2.8f Tamron (720$) or the 15mm 1.4f G sony (620$). What would you recommend? I like to photograph landscapes, do some street photography, and some travel photography. Has anyone tried these lenses? Thank you!
Not Chris, but I would definitely get the Tamron. More flexible, you'll rarely need the f/1.4 of the Sony prime, and 15mm on APS-C is way too wide for street and often not quite wide enough for wideangle landscapes. It's probably optically a fair bit worse than the Sony, but the practical arguments in favor, to me, seem overwhelming.
What choices do Sony apsc shooters have for wide angle zooms? Very few it would seem. The Sony 10-18 ,now rather old, has received less than positive reviews. Tokina may have released a player, but haven't seen any searching reviews. Sony apsc users are hardly spoiled for choice. Seemingly, both Sigma and Tamron must find the R and D cost of developing a wide angle zoom to be too expensive?
