Neil Young was 26 when he landed the biggest success of his career. "Harvest" is a masterpiece
Neil Young already had three solo albums behind him when he released the album "Harvest" in February 1972. With "Harvest" Neil Young hits the heart of the masses. It becomes the best-selling album of 1972 in the U.S. and contains his only Billboard number one hit ever: "Heart Of Gold". In total, the album has sold over 7 million copies to date.
His fellow musicians on the album are Linda Ronstadt, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Jack Nitzsche, James Taylor, Ben Keith and others.
Harvest is the fourth studio album by Canadian-American musician Neil Young, released February 1, 1972 by Reprise Records, catalogue number MS 2032. It featured the London Symphony Orchestra on two tracks and vocals by noted guests David Crosby, Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills, and James Taylor. It topped the Billboard 200 album chart[2] for two weeks, and spawned two hit singles, "Old Man", which peaked at No. 31 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and "Heart of Gold", which reached No. 1.[3] It was the best-selling album of 1972 in the United States.[4] The album has since remained Neil Young's signature album as well as his best selling.[5][6]

After the members of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young went their separate ways in 1970, Young recruited a group of country session musicians (which he christened The Stray Gators) and recorded a country rock record, Harvest. The record was a massive hit, producing a US number one single in "Heart of Gold". Other songs returned to some usual Young themes: "The Needle and the Damage Done" was a lament for great artists who had been addicted to heroin, including Crazy Horse bandmate Danny Whitten; "Alabama" was "an unblushing rehash of 'Southern Man'";[8] to which American southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote their 1973 hit "Sweet Home Alabama" in reply, stating "I hope Neil Young will remember, a Southern Man don't need him around, anyhow". Young later wrote of "Alabama" in his autobiography Waging Heavy Peace, saying it "richly deserved the shot Lynyrd Skynyrd gave me with their great record. I don't like my words when I listen to it. They are accusatory and condescending, not fully thought out, and too easy to misconstrue."[9] "Words (Between the Lines of Age)", the last song on the album, featured a lengthy guitar workout with the band.
The album's success caught Young off guard and his first instinct was to back away from stardom. He would later write that the record "put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore so I headed for the ditch. A rougher ride but I saw more interesting people there."[10]
According to a note posted on Young's official website on May 1, 2019, much of Harvest "was written about or for Carrie Snodgress, a wonderful actress and person and Zeke Young’s mother."[11]
Hey Michael it may interest you to know that Neil himself is quite famous for slight remixes and remasters even way back in the day.
A few examples would be his first self titled lp which was changed and 4 songs remixed and remastered shortly after release.
After the Gold Rush got an un talked about remaster by Neil himself around 1975.
So with Neil it might be worth a little extra time to research older lps to see if the man himself changed anything.
I want to say Everybody Knows this is Nowhere may also have gone through that process as well. Id need to check that one.

Never heard about the remastering of ATGR you mention. I do know that When You Dance I Can Really Love was shortened on the second press, but that had to be before 1975. There's also some pressings out there with a few more bars of guitar solo in Southern Man. He edited that out before the original release so that inclusion was a mistake.
@@Cpayne30 i believe if you go to discogs and find the us release in 1975 you’ll see copies where the color of the lettering is in a reddish color. Believe thats the one i mentioned.

Was it only four songs remixed on the self titled? I knew about the non-RE original but I didn’t know if it was every song. A local shop has an early copy right now that has no RE matrix on Side 2…a few were pressed that way apparently.
I thought about buying it as a cheap way to have the OG mixes on that side anyway but I really want to have them all.
@@thefleshexperience as far as i know yes just the four. I actually have that version where one side is corrected the other isn’t. They aren’t a big deal really but cool to have. If it’s the right price and condition why not. You can always upgrade if you find the original. Don’t see those much and generally they’re beat down.
@@Stonecutter334 The single of Cinnamon Girl is quite a different mix than the album version. Besides it being mono, the vocals are just harmonies, with Neil's voice mixed far back.

Loving these comparisons Michael, and the video you did with The Vinyl Archivist. Ultimately I want the best sounding pressing of my favourite albums. I had both versions of Harvest and I sold the original as I felt the reissue was much better.
Good idea to do this one, as the Chris Bellman cut sounds incredible, but I do wonder whether the original might be better. Looking forward to watching this later when I'm on the elliptical 🤘
Interesting, this is similar to what I am experiencing with Rush right now. I got back into vinyl in 2017 and quickly bought the Sean Macgee DMM cuts of 2112 through Moving Pictures. I thought they sounded amazing and still do. But lately I have been buying originals and I like them even more. Punchier, more high end, so Peart's tom-toms really sing and the ride really cuts through. Less "warm," but somehow more real sounding, if that makes sense. So, like your experience with Harvest, the modern remasters might be more "audiophile" in many ways, but they are not as authentic as the originals. Two different renderings of the same source material. The originals make more sense to me ultimately, whether or not they truly sound better by whatever metric one might use. The new ones sound maybe better in some ways, but don't necessarily sound how they're supposed to sound. There are probably other cases where the modern interpretation would make more sense to me, but in the case of the classic Rush albums, I'll take the originals. And based on what you say, it sounds like I'd prefer an original Harvest as well.
Some say the Nautilus sounds great, have you listened to it? I am not such a Neil Young fan that I would pay the current prices for it. BTW, my favourite Neil Young album by far is the "Dead Man" soundtrack.

Having owned AFTER THE GOLDRUSH and HARVEST for 51 and 50 years respectively I can say they are the only two essential Neil albums.....I have ON THE BEACH/ZUMA/AMERICAN STARS AND BARS/LIVE RUST and RE ACTOR (also OGs)....others have come and gone...I have a few CDs from the late 80s/early 90s......there is a thing of TOO MUCH Neil...the aformentioned Goldrush and Harvest are ICONIC....most of the others are IRONIC....at times quite COMIC.....what I am trying to say is....why would you play any of the 2 millions and counting releases by this performer knowing that GOLDRUSH and HARVEST are almost perfect albums....even half-way good albums like ZUMA have little appeal.....oh dear,I sound ALMOST as GRUMPY as NEIL OLD himself!!!
101ST comment. mike is spot on yet again. chris bellman knows his way around the console and is g8 at cutting discs. RKS as well. if one likes thie NY LP a lot, then one should go for both the OG and the CB

The issue is availability of reliably good quality originals. If I have my own copy, well looked after for 45 years I’m good. But if its a title I don’t already have I will go with a quality label reissue.
In my experience OG pressings are hard to find in good condition. Even though they visually grade well…they sound like a campfire. Especially on 70s pressings. Reissues are frequently the only way to get a decent sounding copy. You have been lucky. The countryside is littered with crappy sounding OG pressings
I agree completely. Never mind first pressings, it's even hard to find a good vintage pressing of a lot of these 70's records.
Totally agree, I've found several copies that looked nm, got them home, cleaned them and spun them and they were noisy throughout

Enjoy the comparisons but would recommend your audiophile channel review recr that are of a standard not of a price. It is similar to,going to an expensive restaurant for the look but not the food
Reprise MS 2032. has max Dynamic Range of 14 and min of 11...( 1972 harvest)..the vu meter needle never stay still)
Chris Bellman pressing brings Neil to my living room, but OG takes me back to 1972 , near the chair Neil was sitting!!!

on the cover, I've a feeling the original was less saturated than the more vivid colour of the 2009 reissue. Just my thoughts - I might be wrong.
I have 1st UK and 1st German presses, yours has definitely "browned" with age there is little between the UK and German pressings, the UK is slightly more vibrant and punchy. The original covers are subject to brown spotting
Michael, you summed up the reason why buying originals is the ONLY way to go.
1. 90% of the time the original will beat all other pressings.
2. An original IS the original! Collectibility is and will always be number one for the first press.
3. An original is 99.9% of the time AAA if pressed pre digital age.
4. The original tends to be priced well and affordable. Even cheaper than overblown represses.
5. Original packaging tends to be more unique
Never ever ever buy a modern repress. Buy the OG

Hi Michael. Back again after a good nights sleep listening to Zuma on the headphones. Bliss. I agree with Manfred Stock's comment below - but at least Michael did not suggest that Neil might be British! Funnily, enough I have many hundreds of original UK pressings as that is where I grew up. And back in the day we listened to the songs and the music for what they were and a remaster or repress was not an option. A REPRESS maybe sure, but we took what we could get. I must say though, NY is well known for his attention to quality and his sourcing of master tapes etc. and the Harvest remaster for example sounds damn good and if it doesn't sound exactly like the original (why the UK anyway? NY and Reprise are American aren't they? Surely the original source tapes did not originate in a small town in England) then that is because NY took the opportunity to fix it 50 years later. He is the ARTIST taking control of his output; if that's not good enough then what is? Stick with the NY Masters is my advice. And to Manfred's main point finally; I moved to Berlin in 1997 and guess what? Yes, most of my LPs since then are German pressings. And guess what's wrong with them? Absolutely nothing. They are fine and I can prove to anyone that German pressings are just as good as an 'original' UK or USA pressing. Honestly, if you see the German pressing plant 'ALSDORF' stamped in the dead wax you know you have that famous 'Made In Germany' quality in your hand. I think we make to much of this object sometimes and I mentioned it before but (almost) ANY new version of an LP has a head start over my 50+ year old copy. Keep up the good work and don't forget Blondie are NOT British neither are the Monkees nor The Velvet Underground but The Beatles are 🙂

I have a comment for your channel , you should do a vynil of the month every month. For each class jazz , rock , pop etc . Then at the end of the year the album of the year. that would be so cool . Love your channel my respects .

I have the US original and Bellman amongst others and both are great. You are right about the harmonica on the IG. I also have Heart if Gold original 45 single. Side B was non other than Sugar Mountain- only way to get that classic for years. Also have US Jukebox EP- all great cheers
I have 3 og copies. I'll now have to ,listen to them. Btw the jackets all look the same. They aren't that dark.

I have that 2009 issue - it’s the only copy I have: it was a Neil Young album I never got when I was younger as it was ‘the commercial one’. Not so of course. Anyway it was quite expensive in the shop - about £30 but it sounds fantastic. I got my Blondie box set yesterday and what a thing of beauty it is.
I have an original pressing of Harvest that I purchased when it was released enjoy it to this day. I play it and reminisce of the days I had long hair :). Always enjoy your videos. Hope all is well in Düsseldorf.
Found og copies of this that looked NM only to play with noise throughout both sides.

Always interesting. I don’t think I can comment anymore on this subject in text. Original vs re-release. 1st press vs re-release. Where the release has come from, analog original, copy tape, digital, re-mixing and remastering, time spent on the release. Pressing qty etc, etc. it’s so confusing and so different across many releases. If you want to discuss it some time feel free to give me a shout 👍
Michael - the version you purchased (original) is true to the original colour scheme. The album jacket (original) was to be close to a cloth like paper - flat colour . I have an original and it sounds great.
…OK I‘m awake again now…I‘m a huge NY fan since I bought HofG backed with Sugar Mountain when I was 11 years old. When I had some money from my paper round in England I later bought Harvest and have bought every new LP since then. Today I have a fresh NY endorsed copy of Harvest which is good enough for me. But, guess what? I sold nearly all of my NY records - YOU DID WHAT??!! Yes, I did and I took out a subscription to The Neil Young Archives and never looked back. Honestly it‘s Neil Young heaven and I never looked back. I may have some NY LPs which I cannot part with….because I‘m only human after all.

Well Michael , I bought a U.S. OG copy in ‘72 and yes it was a darker orange color cover. Your copy is a different color.
Been a fan of Neil young since High School however I was never a big fan of his voice way back. It reminded me of the sound a cat would make if someone was pulling a cat by its tail and head! Never stopped me from buying his albums.
In the mid-80s, someone had recorded a funny song called "Neil Young's Cat". I remember Neil mentioned hearing it in an interview around that time.

Thanks the review Michael. One thing that I find a bit misleading is the price you paid for the US first edition of "Harvest." I have been keeping my eyes open for a NM copy for some time and the going rate is €80 to €120 on Discogs and more on eBay (Popsike). A copy like yours - which almost looks unplayed - would normally cost €100 more than you paid. So wow did you get lucky with that copy! Your point about the price of original pressings versus "audiophile" remasters is excellent - unfortunately, for very popular records, obtaining a NM original is very difficult - as - for rock records at least - they were often played a lot on poor quality equipment. The older the album is the more likely that the grooves have been gouged out. It is brilliant that you are able to afford original pressings to compare with the new reissues. However, if you go into a record shop or a record fair - what you find is endless represses on flexi-vinyl often covered in scuffs - and I think that is the reason why many of us have opted for reissues over the past decade.

I'm a Neil Young nutter I much perfer the Hulko ✂️ cut it's very hard to find Neil Young went to record shops buying as many of the Leo Hulko Stirling pressing back from retailers because he didn'tnot like the live feel...
I personally like it very much indeed such Grail copy to own as the story goes!
Neil lined these copies up in his barn and shot a crates of this pressing to destroy as many he could find....
The Leo Hulko Stirling pressing is a live music feel you can hear the recording room presence and air with Neil's fingers scraping guitar strings you can hear with in the recording session with all musician's this is a amazing find this pressing such a grailin nm conditionnot many surviving from Neil's buy back....
So say it is the Grail of all Neil's album's I have to agree I found two Leo Hulko Stirling pressings lucky me...

I recently done the same with After the Gold rush , Og v remaster .
The remaster is more rounded & lustrous.I would give it the edge ever so slightly.The Og on the other hand has moments of magic that jump out at you from your speakers,magic that’s toned down on the remaster,
What it shows is the incredible job Chris Bellman has done on the NY reissues.

I still believe that the original is almost always better. The tapes were fresh, you know for sure it was all ANALOG and the pressing plant technology was at the height of its dominance. This is of course relative to 1960s-1990s
Yes, that is the correct OG color. You are VERY fortunate because a: the original is not laminated and b: it came out long before there was such a thing as 'outer sleeves', so that it got smudged and dirty very easily. Nice catch, and nice review!

A bunch of years ago I was wanting a clean copy of Harvest. Anytime I saw it, it was always beat up or not too good looking. So I just got the CB cut and was happy ever since, when measured against my other NY records. Then, a few months ago I found a super clean OG for $10 and had to buy it. It's awesome too, and just as enjoyable, although the CB cut is a teensy bit quieter. But it's also 50 years newer. Both are killer. I've only heard the OG once, so I don't know all the nuances.
The Bellman is likely more true to the tape. Added analogue compression on the original? Different cutting chain and different EQ choices. The aim of a reissue is not to replicate the original vinyl pressing. I think Bellman sounds better but originals have the attraction of being the historic artifact.
The original jacket is a highly textured paper product. Yours is a later pressing. I have several.
Hi Micheal, great dive into this record. Yes, there are differences in the shade of the covers. This record is very special to me, I was a teen taking my language classes, and these were the songs we used to dissect. especially Heart of Gold. Anyways, your description was quite precise, similar to how I feel. The work Chris Bellman is doing with the NY catalogue is phenomenal. I remember the first time listening to the Carnegie Hall concert, I knew the whole series was worth getting. These minor differences are due not only, in my opinion, to the proximity in time to the recording, the studio resources and of course choices in sound and the vinyl pressing technique. I do like the Chris Bellman cuts of Black sabbath for Rhino in 2011, really worth checking. Also, good to remember that in the US even the OGs can vary according to pressing plant, like Monarch, specialty, Terre Haute, etc. Quite a journey, always satisfying
Hi Michael, the original cover you have is how it should be (it's not faded). When I first saw the cover of the 2009 remaster I thought it looked tacky (I still do think that). - Ian
Great video and comments on Neil Young-totally agree on your comparisons of reissue v. Original. But note- true original has kind of a speckled oatmeal paper textured cover- with L.H. for Lee Hulko in deadwax. Check it out, maybe you can do a part II- these pressings slay the re-issue!
The more I watch a variety of Mastering Engineers talk about their process, it's as Bernie Grundman said on your stream: Trust Your Ears. We all think we have definitive versions but in reality, each remastered version of anything (barring a total screw-up on the OG, like Rush's Vapor Trails) is an interpretation of how each Engineer "trusts" their own ears. In Analogue Productions cases, not only does BG have to trust his ears, he has to manipulate it to get past Chad Kassem's ears. I have some Mofi's and they all sound very similar, which I consider Krieg Wunderlich's sound. Ryan K Smith has a sound, Chris Bellman does and on and on. The OG is the actual way it was meant to be, given the era it was released, and all remasters are interpretations of the OG.
I'm noticing a trend so far with these reviews - a preference for the original (or close to original) pressing. Leaving aside whether such comparisons meet any meaningful standard of 'objectivity' in the scientific sense (they're neither single blind nor double blind and have unknown 'test-retest' reliability) they do raise an interesting possibility. It's clear that sound on analog master tapes degrades over time if they are poorly stored/mishandled. Perhaps there is a more subtle degradation of even the best stored analog tape over time that's less obvious, but nevertheless can be detected in the more 'rarified' qualities of sound (i.e, qualities that the vast majority of listeners might not even notice). The medium (tape) is unstable, after all. If this is the case then it might not EVER be possible for a new pressing to match the (e.g.) 'dynamics' of a well-mastered, well-pressed original pressing of an analog recording. Now, if the original was digitally recorded...

I've been enjoying your channel for a long time, but over the past few months it has become even more interesting and informative. Thank you!
So last year I was shopping for 'After the Goldrush' and had deluxe re-issue in my hands questioning if I *really* needed a 100USD copy. Then found the less-deluxe re-issue for 50USD and decided it could wait. Shortly after picked up a original pressing from a small, local shop I'm on friendly terms with. Record was in a terrible condition (even after a cleaning) so I griped to him and exchanged it for something else. Months later another original turns up in VG condition so I buy it - slightly over priced - and enjoy it. A month or so later a copy of 'Harvest' turns up - an original pressing, but not - as it turned out it's a mid-70's repress. Record plays fine, but the surface noise resists repeated cleanings. Sigh. These records routinely turn up in the 2nd hand shops for less than the money I spent so I now question whether the effort is worth it when a minty-mint re-issue can be had for a few dollars more or a VG repress can be had for a few dollars less. Lesson learned.

@@Michael45RPM Thankfully I bought the first four Neil Young EU 180 gram reissues. I got them for around €27 each sealed in 2009. I remember Michael Fremer not liking the 140/150 gram US versions when they came first and he recommended getting the 180 gram versions!
Had the MFSL Parallel Lines lp. It sounded great. The Nautilus 1/2 speed version of Harvest was in the late 80s early 90s the hot audiophile copy. Use to be mad expensive. Still is.
Sounds more polished because was pressed at Pallas. We all know that Pallas polishes the metal stamper 😁. Just joking. I have the remaster and love it.
Michael, I have a first pressing of this record, the first listing you will see on Discogs from Terre Haute, and the coloring is much closer to the CB version. In fact this version has a textured outer sleeve. The version you've shown looks to be a different variant with a matt non-textured look(unless I'm not seeing it properly on RUclips). Looking at Discogs, looks like the first year presses are mostly textured, though there are some that don't have any particular designation on Discogs.
Very clear and informative, Micheal. This is great info! I no longer have the original, and am surprised and delighted you were so fortunate to get such a nice copy. I suspect I might prefer the polished reissue but who knows? I have an original Gold Rush that I may do a close comparison with the Archive edition and let you know. Regarding the jacket. Most US pressings I recall being closer in color to the reissue, your original seems lighter than the ones I've seen here in the US.

I have a original copy of Harvest in truly mint condition. It plays beautifully. I fully recommend it to anyone if they can find themselves a clean copy.
Holds a special place in my collection as it was the first vinyl album I ever purchased. 👏1972 aged 15.

Unless the artist was very unhappy with the original at the time it was released and it was not his/her vision, I always stick with originals not matter how much "better" the remixed, remastered, better pressings, etc, reissues are.

I think price has to do with scarcity. They pressed probably millions of harvest pressings at the time of release vs. a few thousand for any boutique label
Great review Michael!! The 2009 CB remaster is now and then for sale at my local record store. But not for long, it always sells very quickly. It's a record that always sells, says the owner. Out of the whole Neil young catalog, i think this title is the most repressed.
Btw, according to the same record shop, the Tone Poet "Blue Train" that is coming out next week has a good stock for Europe. In the warehouse there are about 1000 mono copies and 3000 stereo copies. Ready to be distributed.

I have the 09 and my 17 year old daughter has the OG, which is kind of beat up. I've compared, but the Bellman was better just because of the noise factor. Many people over the past few years have focused on what the latest reissue was (i.e. Mofi Fomo etc., often forgetting, or not knowing there were some excellent reissues in the 2000's. Those were selling really cheap all the way up until recently. I bet if you started looking for what was reissued in 2000-2010's you'd find some gems. Also, I have "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" Bellman 09 and I think I actually like it better than Harvest. Down By the River sounds so amazing on that cut.
Agree with everything you say! I used to have a crackly original Harvest (even though visually it graded excellent) and when the Bellman cut was released in 2009 it was a joy to upgrade to it! I play it regularly (along with the other 2009 reissues which are just some of the nicest reissues ever in my opinion, once you’ve swapped out the paper inner sleeves!)
Michael, love this format. Engaging content that's unique to your channel and gives viewers a reason to come back. So much more interesting than the constant streams discussing reissues coming from this source or that. I always appreciate and seem to reach for my originals more than my spendy audiophile releases (I do buy them and listen to them). It's a more pure experience for me - almost feels as if it's a closer connection the to story the artist and engineers where telling at that time. Also more gratifying to have had them for so long or find them out there in the wild. Thanks M - keep 'em coming.
F.Y.I., MSK 2277 is an early repress with a faded colored reproduced jacket, but is not an original. The original is MS 2032 with a yellowish/gold colored jacket similar to the remastered edition. I have both the original vinyl and the early repress vinyl and they sound alike; no perceptible difference.
I have been left with a fantastic record collection by my late uncle, about 2500 LP's. That album is in the collection, it is in absolutely mint condition, I don't think he actually played any of them. Pink Floyd DSOM with the solid blue triangle with the posters and stickers. So many great albums, it's going to be fun playing them. He has a complete box of Beatles records. I just had to get a turntable ! The covers are fantastic plus all the books, posters and lyric sheets.
What I find disappointing is that a German channel only makes vinyl comparisons with US and UK originals, which are now expensive for Europeans to buy, as in this video for 25 euros. I have the German pressing of this album from 1972 on Reprise Records in gatefold with lyric sheet in near mint conditions and great sounding.
I bought the album for 6 euros at the flea market.
Here in Germany there are hundreds of thousands of good pressings of such important albums in circulation at flea markets and record stores. Why should I always buy the US or UK pressing, which were often not better, especially in the 70s and 80s? Because they are nice and expensive? Or because supposedly an OG is only the country where the band comes from? What a nonsense. A German or Dutch first pressing is often just as good, only cheaper to get.
But well to those for whom money plays no role.
I think Michael is running an international channel.
I have the UK edition gatefold, lyric sheet, charity shop for £5. Would be interesting to have a comparison of 'first pressings' from around the world. But for a US originated album going to the US first pressing makes sense as the reference. It's probably the edition Neil Young gave the nod to.

Many people forget to look for German or Dutch pressings.
But I also agree here, that original pressings are often more vivid, more emotional sounding as remastered versions. Although they may sound cleaner,maybe to clean.....
I believe this was originally issued in the US, hence the US pressing comparison. In other milestones comparisons, like the Kraftwerk Radio Activity, Michael uses the respective native country release, in this case German.
I'm in Canada and am quite happy with records that were pressed here. I never go out of my way to try and find UK or even U.S. presses which are no easier to find here.
It wouldn’t make sense, except on occasion, to compare an audiophile reissue against a pressing made from lower generation tape copies. Sometimes there are great German pressings of US or UK OG records, but you’re asking michael to do comparisons of inferior pressings (for the most part) on a channel that has “audiophile” in its name.
The DVD-A is a disappointment. It is very bass heavy and poor fidelity.
