  • Just a random video I made because I was bored, since I have now caught both the P42s and the Chargers leading trains on the Carl Sandburg route out of Quincy, IL I thought I would make a video comparing the visual and operational differences between the two locomotive types using videos I've shot over the course of this year. - Enjoy!

      The GE engines vs a Cummins. Personally truck wise, I have no objection to Cummins, but on these engines, they have no personality. I don’t think you can straight pipe it, because aren’t they all straight piped? Also, the Charger’s horn isn’t nearly as throaty as the P42’s, or any other locomotive for that matter.

      The P42 at the beginning of the video is actually running at Notch 5 because it is supplying HEP for the cars. The F40's it replaced had to run at Notch 8 which is why they were called "Screamers" and devoured fuel.

    Honestly, I like both a lot. I like the Charger because of the acceleration and the horn. The fact that it is cleaner and quieter, and accelerated faster is a plus, since it is a diesel electric train. The third gen K5LA is what I also like about them. The P-42s have a unique idling sound, which I like a lot, and the sound when it accelerates is another. Also, P-42s can have different types of horns mounted on top, in which the horn I like the most is the Hybrid K5LA, shown in the video. I like both a lot, but if anything, I’d go with the P-42, even though they may be retired soon. I think of them as a classic Amtrak engine since I see them most of the time, outside the northeast region on passenger routes.

      I just commented, really the P-42's have 3 decades on them, so its really no justice in comparing in my opinion. The ACS64 has the same qualities when compared against the AEM7 and the AEM7 ran for 4 decades. Remember the HHP8's was supposed to replace the AEM7s and E60s and failed miserably. Lets give the Sprinters 10 years.

    Genesis is the most beautiful passenger locomotive in North America. The Charger looks like a toy compared to the beautiful beast of a locomotive that the Genesis is. But if I was an engineer I would probably prefer driving the Charger, because it's newer, more comfortable, responds quicker. But the Genesis wins the look contest. A Charger in a Genesis body would be awesome, it would be the perfect locomotive.

    The Charger looks far more finished designwise than the Genesis. The GE’s nose looks like something that was built in a garage with the biggest pieces of glass you can get from Home Depot. I don’t deny that gives them a folksy charm, but it is time to move on.
    The SC-44 units are sleeker, more powerful, and faster. The lighted open sides are destined to be remembered by every young train nerd long after they’re gone from service. The new livery finally brings back some color, though the P42 didn’t look bad in silver and blue.
    But the clincher was shown between the departing trains. The P42 was kicking up a plume of soot that off-shore German u-boats could spot. Did they accidentally fill up with bunker C that day?

      I agree, the Brightline loco and matching car set should become the next Amtrak standard for non electric corridors, ie, NYS Empire Service, Midwest, California.
      I’m old school, and nothing beats the EMD E’s and F’s and ALCO PA’s and FA’s as far as looks and appearance.
      I’ve been to the UK and Europe, and the most stylish trains are Thayles, TGV, Eurostar, ICE 2 and 3. The front end of the Amtrak Charger to me doesn’t exhibit creative industrial design. Where are our new design engineers like Dreyfus and Lowey?

    In my opinion, looks wise the P42 has the edge a little bit...especially in the older or Heritage paint schemes. The long looking side profile with the huge grills on the Charger is kind of what screws up the look for me. But I don't think the Charger is an ugly unit by any means!
    From the comparison as shown in this video, the Charger is MUCH quieter, looks to accelerate more rapidly, and there was no visible black smoke coming billowing from the unit like on the P42. It would be interesting to hear from the people who operate and maintain the locomotives to see which one they prefer.
    Those Amfleet coaches are what blow my mind, those things are creeping up towards 45 years old, I still think they look good and they still look fairly modern despite their age!
    Awesome video, I live in the Northeast so I haven't gotten to experience any Chargers yet, sounds like in a few years we will get some out this way! Thanks for posting!

    I love them both, however the P42 have the transition look from f40ph and SDP40f's. I hope when the new long distance engines arrive, that they have either the bloody nose or even better, the three strips red, white and blue paint style . I do not like the current Amtrak paint style. For some reason it is too bland and lacks character. The p42's are the gracious green engines, while the Chargers are the new prince. Some the new EMD F59 are funny looking and betrayed the EMD traditional style. Thank you for a good film. Oh the horn on the p42's sound better then the Chargers.

      It was the same way when Amtrak acquired the ACS-64 electric locomotives for both Northeast Corridor and Keystone Corridor service. People didn't want to see the AEM-7 "Toasters" go, but they were at the end of their useful life cycles and Amtrak wanted an electric locomotive that could be as reliable as the AEM-7 (as the HHP-8 was an utter failure, much like the E-80s Amtrak purchased to replace the GG-8s it inherited from the PRR/Penn Central), yet Amtrak to use their new engine to be a basis for other high-speed corridor routes. The SC-44s borrow the basic design from the ACS-65 (both being built by Siemens), but differ only by their power source. However, unlike the ACS-65s, which are limited to overhead wire propulsion, Amtrak could also have Siemens manufacture a dual-powered SC-44 (a sort-of "SC-44DP") using either a third-rail shoe or pantograph for use in subway tunnels (like that of Amtrak's Empire Corridor trains in NYC), but switching to the diesel-electric motors when the train reaches the end of third-rail or overhead power traction supply. Such a locomotive would also allow commuter rail agencies like NJ Transit, LIRR, and Metro North to be able to retire most of their fleets and open new markets, such as "Midtown Direct" Service on NJT or the LIRR that would normally terminate at Newark Penn or Hoboken Stations (NJT) or outside of Queens (LIRR).

    • @vchiu9560
      @vchiu9560 4 года назад

      It is very difficult to answer such a question because it all depends if speed is measured on flat track, uphill or downhill. If on a flat track , the question is how many miles do you allow the train set to accelerate before measuring speed? If given enough time, top speed could be the same with 4 coaches. I will just need about 4 times longer to reach that said speed as with 16 coaches.

    In Britain and Europe, Siemens have an awful reputation regarding 1) track damage and 2) reliability. It will be interesting to see over time, whether these issues manifest themselves in America and Canada. I know the P42DC is slower accelerating, but that might be to do with her gearing for a 110 mph top speed. What is the top speed of the SC44 ? How does the SC44 compare to the 4,250 hp of a P42DC ? For looks, exhaust note, and horn sound - I prefer the P42DC. Regards, from London, England.

However those Chargers are ugly as hell in my opinion, the Genesis will always win and will be remembered. in my opinion:
    -the genesis is the perfect amtrak locomotive
    -the chargers are cool but feel small for a big train company like amtrak and appear that they should only run on commuter or intrastate railways
    -the f125’s definitely look like big locomotives amtrak would use and be a great replacement but idk if it is capable of covering super long distances or if it was ever meant to

  • @supertoasting1011
    @supertoasting1011 3 года назад

    I know we all like the Genesis, but the Chargers just seem like excellent locomotives and an upgrade from the Genesis all around. Better acceleration, less emissions, quiet. Amtrak is actually ordering a slightly re-designed Charger to be used on their long distance routes that I think looks a little better than the current ones. I presume the Chargers we have now will be kept on the shorter distance trains like the Surfliner in CA.
    Also did anyone notice how much smoke the Genesis belched out compared to the Charger which made almost none?

    I'm going to miss the muscular beating of that engine in the P42. From inside the passenger car, there's little or no difference. The Chargers seem to sound quieter from outside. Other than the paint job and the open barn door effect, a better muffler and maybe higher efficiency seem to be it. There is no holding back progress, however.
