I like the Hoss but my fully upgraded Stampede 4×4 VXL TSM makes buying it pointless. It costs a pretty penny when upgraded, but that's just the hobby. I always get excited with new parts.
Food for thought: I just converted my stampede to a hoss. Mostly because I broke the chassis and front bulkhead jumping and needed to buy one anyways...but... Basically all you need from the hoss is: chassis, battery holder, center driveshaft (and cover), shock towers, and body. Total was just over a hundred dollars. The whole front and rear bulk heads just bolt right onto the hoss chassis. All of my electronics (and motor mounts) bolted right into the hoss chassis. Since I am keeping the stampede motor, I let the slipper clutch stay as well. Anything beyond that can be upgrades as stuff wears out or breaks...such as tires, servo, larger motor, center diff... All in all it would cost about 300 if you went hog wild and just did it all.
How about describing it as a high cg chassis 4x4 rustler, since it has the same wheelbase as a rustler and many more rustler parts? Wouldn't that be more accurate? It seems that some people just don't realize what all is different from the 4x4 stampede and the new rustler.
Traxxas right in their forum calls it the Rustler cousin. All of the videos in this series have just rubbed me the wrong way. Like he tried to rush it to be first and got too much wrong that a little research would have fixed.
The Hoss should sell for $400. $480 is too close to the Maxx like you said. A motor and center diff improvement over the Rustler vxl 4x4 don't make the $80 price jump make sense to me when they're included with the Hoss as a whole.
