The big weirdness here is the dancing; probably the first and last time I saw anyone, unfortunately, dancing to Yes. But by 1969, the term progressive rock had scarcely been invented, and certainly no one had instructed audiences that they couldn’t dance. After about 40 years as a professional musician, it wasn’t until I retired that I played a set of Motown covers, all in 4/4, in a local bar, and it was such fun. Popular music risks its neck when it severs its connection with dance. Given that my friends and I have consistently offered undanceable music, it’s a miracle that we got away with so much and stayed afloat. #billbrufordsearthworks
Your life was quite a journey wasn't it? I was born in 1991 an still, Yes brings me the most joy of all music I ever heard. Modern music, old school rock, classical music even. Nothing makes me feel just as happy as Yes does. Magic. Thank you Bill.
Those UNDERRATED first two albums....Full of energy!. I love them
The musical direction changed completely when Howe and Wakeman came on board, but I loved the first two albums.

@@jrsinsf Me too! Chris Squire's bass on "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed" is phenomenal. Bill, Peter Banks, Tony Kaye all great musicians and so much energy. A very different kind of Yes compared to later albums, but very enjoyable all the same. There are some videos on RUclips of the band from that era and they look as if they are having great fun.

@@johngalt5411 Check out one of the Yes BBC sessions collections and the bonus tracks on the Rhino reissues of the first two Yes albums, those have the kind of stuff you're looking for.
Can I just say that the way Bill punctuates that big, round mid-high bass sound is (expletive)ing majestic! It reminds me of the buttons on a well-stuffed leather sofa. If you only knew YES from Fragile and Close to the Edge you’d get the impression that Bill was only a drummer because that’s where he sat on the stage - behind the drums. But when you listen to the first three albums there is real POWER in his playing. Bill - if you’re watching/reading this - I’m tipping my hat to you right now. I’m glad you’re in the RRHOF because you deserve it.
After all these years Bill's drumming still holds my attention & never ceases to impress. Always economical & clever, I love that.
Gorgeous underrated track in the Yes catalogue
Pretty cool to hear and see Yes in the early years before they became the giant juggernaut band that we will all know them for. I love it.
Very nice to see all of.the original members here. Tony Kaye really carries himself on stage and Jon Anderson smiles warmly. Chris Squire looks.cool with that hat. Bill Bruford keeps the beat in the drums and Peter Banks cuts loose with some power chords. And the audience grooves to Looking Around!

Nice clip. As a drumming hobbyist and a huge fan of both Yes and general popular music (espec Motown) , I have to totally agree with the preamble comments.
Great to see this Bill, the kernels of genius are evident in all players, even the ones that moved on to greatness with other bands. Sad part is I still dance like this.
Speaking of dancing, I’ve been watching some early 80’s live King Crimson videos in particular the ones that start with “Waiting Man”. It doesn’t take long before your hips start to sway and then Adrian joins you on percussion and you are both dancing. It puts a smile on my face every time!

Not easy stuff to sing, the harmonics are so close together , the group already showing sophistication and complexity.
This just the studio version. Pretty common for shows like this to make bands mime/lip synch for TV performances.

I manage to work a lot of Yes tunes into my workout playlist. Granted, it's not really dancing, but horsing around with some dance moves. I'm just glad no one is looking .... I hope! 🙂

One thing I've always appreciated was that the YES music didn't lend itself to danceability, yet YES were still successful! 'Weirdness'...Love videos from the sixties!
well, in my teen years we did dance along ''owner of a lonely heart'', but thats another era, lol
I'm sorry, but every incarnation of Yes is sublime. They created their own genre. My favorite lineup was Anderson, Howe, Wakeman, Squire and Bruford. They were at their peak, IMO. But every incarnation was special. 🙏

began with Yes, was getting stoned and just listening and being brought on a wonderful musical journey to places in the imagination that were so beautiful.
I can remember bringing friends and lovers along and turning them on to it...

Regardless of my thoughts on the current Yes lineup it's great Yes still exist. However, who would have believed at the time this fabulous clip was shot that Yes would still be around in 2022 without any of the guys in this video, astonishing.

10/10 que armonización de las voces, como grupo vocal de jazz de primera ... Música bailable y similar al Hush de Deep Purple de esa misma época, es Rock con Peso... groovy sicodélico... por eso Yes tiene fans en el Metal Rock, tocaban con peso, aún con esos segmentos más tranquilos y Pop, pero tenían su 'peso específico'
It's funny but for some reason I seem to picture Pete and Tony as fitting in well with Fleetwood Mac at that time too, really. Kaye may not have had the flamboyance of Wakeman (who did?) but he was obviously a sure thing as an organist on his own. Very much in line with Tony Banks and Rick Wright at the time really.
Had you looked around a gymnasium during a high school dance in the 60's and 70's, you would have seen mostly dudes lining the rear back wall, uninterested, incapable, or frightened of dancing with a girl. THAT was the future prog rock audience!

Definitely not live. It’s possible the vocals are live (doubled with the recording). That was pretty much the standard procedure for musical acts on TV at the time. Still love this video though! (And the song. GREAT song and youthful energy.)
Went to a Genesis reunion concert a few years ago - youngsters (defined as those under 45 in my world) started dancing. “Sit down!” shouted my friend at them, “You’re at at Genesis concert, not Take That.” ….Us English are a strange lot.

It’s a lip-synced TV broadcast. Sounds like it’s the original album version with a few elements of the mix tweaked a bit. (More reverb on the group vocals near the end, a different organ take at the end.) They’re definitely not playing though - the guitar and bass aren’t plugged in and Bill is doing everything he can to avoid actually hitting anything with his sticks! :) Still love this video though, especially the awkward dancing.
Great Song, Easy to hear. Liked imagining Peter singing to support Jon and Chris. A different listen than the work Steve and Company would make moving forward, but great in its one way and direction.
I'm a life long Yes fan and I enjoyed seeing this video, but I was also sad that modern pop music is so bad by comparison. Thanks Bill.

De todas formas, los ritmos con órgano Hammond son muy bailables y para la época, parecía muy lógico.

Not nearly as strange as the fashion models dancing to the Nice playing Karelia Suite and Rondo on French TV in 1969, though.

Super cool song, sort of a companion to "Good Times Bad Times" off of Led Zeppelin's debut. It probably lacked a strong enough hook that would have helped it to chart, but Peter Banks (interesting you got this off his website, Bill) was right -- this really should have been the lead single off the album. And it squashes Chris Squire's claims that it wasn't until Time and a Word that his famous bass sound emerged.

I don't think Jon was taking this seriously at all, LOL.
The first two albums are imo better that fragile and close to the edge (at least for easy listening), don't get me wrong that later stuff is ingenious in terms of composition, but I feel like those first two albums are a lot closer to the jazz origins and they manage to balance complexity and simplicity perfectly, I personally feel like fragile-era Yes was maybe too complex for my personal taste at least)
Learned the following. So that is how to dance to Yes. Taking tips for next visit to disco. Jon Anderson was instinctive in his use of the tambourine even when they hadn't been discovered yet. Chris Squire had yet to grow out of his fetish for silly hats. Bill was just cool and outplayed everyone just on his use of hi hat alone. Pete was THE best guitarist Yes ever had. Tony was busy inventing The Chalatans (UK version).

Great video, shame it’s a playback…. The real live videos from this period are immense…especially live version of no opportunity which is a far more definitive recording than the album. I love everything up to close to the edge (can’t get into Alan whites drumming at all) but have a particular fondness for this raw lineup…Pete Banks really rocked out in a way Steve Howe never could, and he had some better jazzy chops to boot
