So while your premise is that it's not overt racism, you ignore the reality that if white people have created the structures, which means white people get to select who they have representing those structures, it stands to reason that white people are going to consciously or unconsciously choose their own people for a variety of seemingly harmless but nevertheless, damaging reasons for people who are not white. This was a tough call because Liam Neeson was also great in SCHINDLER'S LIST and SCHINDLER was clearly the better film. But Tom Hanks's performance in PHILADELPHIA was the first time a major star showed the face of AIDS in all its horror and still managed to capture the hearts of the audience. God bless you Mr Hanks.
As the granddaughter of a man who's sisters slip him to that train when he was 13 and who's sister gave her NAME to another girl who was sick so she could be saved and ended up staying imprisoned in the ghetto for 8 more months, I can tell you that this movie, as good as it may be, disrespects the real heroes of the story which are the survivors. My grandfather didn't want to go on that train. He didn't want to leave his family behind and he was terrified because his sisters couldn't tell him that this train was there to bring him back to life and safety because if they did they would've risked exposing the entire plan so he thought that his sisters (which he haven't seen for 4 years before that brief reunion, by the way) were basically sending him away to die. He was sure that it was the same train he'd heard of, the train that'll take you to your final destination. Can you imagine how that must've felt for a child? They never deal with that in the movie, they chose to focus on the angel saving the poor Jewish people when in fact, and incredible as he actually was, don't get me wrong, the thousands of warriors he put on the list were the ones who saved their voice to talk to the god they weren't even sure was there anymore instead of being the focus and playing god themselves. So yeah, I actually think Philadelphia was the right choice.
hanks hugs neeson as he is walking up on stage, which says a lot! i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these amazing roles/performances.
If u look very close at 0:35 you can see a very emotional sobbing Sharon Stone just near Spielberg who was obviously in tears because of her tireless and committed work in AIDS research, very affected by the role Hanks had played of a gay man dying of AIDS
Tom Hanks' charisma is almost presidential in scale. This acceptance speech is so unbelievably powerful and profound that it literally takes my breath away and wells my eyes with tears of pure awe at this incredible man's honest, unflinching, thought provoking and life-affirming portrayal of a person's reality of living with one of the most disastrous and ruthless diseases to have ever afflicted humanity. Tom's movie performance was a universal one, that transcends HIV and AIDS - it was also moral lesson in the importance of equality, empathy, acceptance and ultimately humanity at its most fundamental level. His acceptance speech is among the greatest set of words ever to have been spoken in the English language. I'm blown away... Chris (UK).
Remember the 90s, when movies were so good, that people argued about who deserved the Oscar more? Instead of what movie sucked the least and therefore the lead actor deserved it?

I'm a gay 16 year old boy and I saw Philadelphia for the first time earlier this year. The film inspired me to come out publicly at school, and I've been so much happier since. Regardless of the now old age of this film, it changed my life drastically for the better. It holds a very dear place in my heart and I know that holds true for many others like me. It gives me faith in humanity and myself, knowing that a kind, wonderful, loved actor is there to support those like me who often find ourselves without support. Thank you Tom, you are the perfect image and example of a perfect man. We love you!

This is one of my favourite movies of all time, and Tom Hanks is my favourite actor, but there's always a little part of me that is sad for Liam Neeson. His performance as Oskar Schindler was magnificent.
Liam Neeson was just extraordinary in Schindler’s List. It’s a such an important movie. But so was Philadelphia. And I just watched it the other day and cried. Just the performance Hanks gives in his eyes and facial expressions alone. Subtle but profound. Bravo to both...but I think think the right man won that night.
I'm so happy that he included Denzel Washington; he should have been nominated, too. A special Oscar should have been given to Liam Neeson. His performance as Oskar Schindler will go in history as one of the greatest.
I know one of those angel’s names. He was my uncle. A gay man who left us too early because of AIDS. This movie broke my heart, because I know he heard a lot of awful things people said to him. They said those things to me too. His memory was tied to pain for 25 years. Until a week ago when my wife and I welcomed a baby to our family. His name is Gordon - after my uncle.
WOW for someone that just got arrested for child trafficking and adrenochrome he is using the word God a lot. Either he was corrupted after this, or he's just a really good actor.
this speech broke me when I first saw it as an adult gay man. Heartbreaking. such a conservative era still. Tom Hanks was always progressive but this was just beautiful.
I still think Liam Neeson should of won, he's never played a better role I think than he did in Schindler's List. It was a one in a lifetime movie for him to star in. Not taking anything away from Tom Hanks, he's clearly talented enough to win another Oscar after this win.
hanks hugs neeson as he is walking up on stage, which says a lot! i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these amazing roles/performances.
Hanks where good in this movie, but Liam Neeson should have won for Oskar Schindler. I never saw such a moving scene like the ending of Schindler's List
It was mentioned that he was heterosexual, because Hanks played a gay man, then gave an emotional speech about gay people, but was not a gay actor, therefore rendering his speech a little bit ‘luvvie’. If you want some context, imagine a white actor playing a black man, winning as Oscar, then getting.all weepy about the plight of black people when accepting the award. Now does anyone get the joke?
All the actors nominated that year were ridiculously good. Neeson was incredible in Schindler's List, but for me, Hanks' performance was perfection. His acting in Philadelphia was emotional, understated and relevant to society, given the issues dealt with in the film.
You guys have to remember that at the time Philadelphia came out, the AIDS epidemic was at its peak. Before 1995, when effective treatments became available for those who were HIV positive, if you or anyone you knew contracted AIDS, it was still a death sentence. Tom Hanks' performance in that movie goes to show that at the end of the day, tolerance, no matter what, still exists.
hanks hugs neeson as he is walking up on stage, which says a lot! i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these amazing roles/performances. but the pat on the cheek that sir anthony gives hanks as he stands to accept is worth more imho than a symbolic scrap of metal.
It's strange when I watch Hanks here. Though he's genuinely grateful, notice how he keeps looking in Neeson's direction... I get the vice that he feels like he just robbed Liam and probably think he deserved it more than he did. That said, still a fine speech, and he did well in Philadelphia.
This movie was shown to me by my parents when I was young, because they thought it would help me start to see multiple sides to an ongoing debate that seemingly had only one side to it. They succeeded. I thank Mr. Hanks for beyond so brave and taking this role, and teaching us all a message of "what it means to be human".
Tom Hanks was good in Philadelphia but it was Denzel Washigton's performance that blew me out of my seat. He (Washington) had the much harder role to play.
Tom is so humble and kind in his Oscar acceptance speeches! He was so deserving of this Award. This was a very difficult role to pull off and he did so with such grace and humanity! God Bless you Tom! 😁🗽🇱🇷
I don't recall which movie it was that I went to see with my wife. I do remember that when we got there the theater was full and so we decided to watch the other movie available at that particular hour which was Philadelphia. Luckily there were 2 seats available, the last 2 seats and so we grabbed them. Aside from Tom and Denzel and Antonio's display of what a great actor is all about, the thing I remember the most is the amount of ppl all around us weeping throughout the movie all the way to the end and then outside too. I have never been so glad to have arrived late at a movie theater. Regards to my kid brother who died of AIDS back in 1997 at the age of 37. RIP kiddo.
This film helped change attitudes toward gay people and AIDS victims. I think the proof is shown in how many states now allow same sex Marriage. A groundbreaking film that only succeeded because of Tom Hanks performance, A well deserved Oscar.
My mom was kind of on the edge of supporting gays 100%, but she cried for the last 20 minutes of the movie. Completely changed her outlook. When art does that, it's the most beautiful thing.
Tom hanks was awesome...but it really should have gone to Liam Nissan as Oskar Schindler...those historical roles usually win to which is the odd thing that it also lost to a character who is gay with HIV/aids...and everyone knows the "Hollywood homophobia", so it's really something spectacular hanks won
hanks hugs neeson as he is walking up on stage, which says a lot! i think both men accept that they were both pinnacle in their craft for these amazing roles/performances. but the pat on the cheek that sir anthony gives hanks as he stands to accept is worth way more imho than a symbolic scrap of metal.
I don't think so. It was a VERY IMPRESSIVE category though. Tom Hanks' character in PHILADELPHIA was troubling to watch and that's because of his GENIUS.
Tom Hanks gave a fine performance in Philadelphia, but Liam Neeson's performance was superior. His acting range, character immersion, and development were all better than those of Tom Hanks. And I don't understand why Daniel Day-Lewis' acting is overlooked here; I realize he has been rewarded for his performances, but his acting was incredible in In the Name of the Father.
Tom Hanks character in Philadelphia evoked more empathy from me than any character I've seen in a film since. Plus, the issue the film tackled was very taboo in major production films. His performance was magnified by the director and his supporting cast but that film and the way it was shot put his performance in a spotlight brighter than Liam's. Think about the time this film was made, the taboo-ness and the disease it highlighted... I'm a straight male who was raised in a homophobic household but Tom's performance... He made me feel sympathy and empathy for a gay man in a time when homosexuality was NOT embraced in public. I give all the props in the world to his performance.
After watching this film at the cinema I sat in a McDonalds and wept. I could tell that I wasn't the only one affected by it. We had all left the cinema in a shocked silenced. The fear of that disease was written all over our faces. Whilst sitting there all I could think about as I looked at the people around me (still with a look of dread on their faces as they were queuing for food) was that one day we will all be at the bedside of a loved one (or they at ours) while they lie there dying like Andrew Beckett. The thought of such a future broke my heart.
First of all I have to say I like Liam Neeson, Daniel Day-Lewis and Anthony Hopkins and their fine performances in great movies this year. It was a strong year in the lead actor category. But Tom Hanks´performance in this very important movie was great. His character had so much integrity and humanity. He was Andrew Beckett and he played this character so well along with the great Denzel Washington. Very deserved win and by the way a wonderful acceptance speech.
Well, when you're nominated with Daniel Day-Lewis, Anthony Hopkins and Liam Neeson, you're probably not expecting to win. Olivia Colman was the same way when she won for "The Favourite." "Me????"
I think Mel Gibson deserved an Oscar nomination that year. He was great in "The Man Without a Face". I even think Sylvester Stallone gave a very impressive acting in "Cliffhanger"
2:35-3:50 just shattered me completely. I was not ready for this. What an honour to be a 90s girl and to have grown up on his lap, 10,000 miles away from me but at times closer than my own family. I love you Mr Hanks.
It’s beautiful to see that love message from almost 30 years ago , nevertheless I can’t believe there are still people who hates another people for loving each other
hanks hugs neeson as he is walking up on stage, which says a lot! i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these amazing roles/performances.
Liam Neeson deserved to win for his role to save Jewish from the evil of Nazism in Schindler's List. Tom Hanks deserved to win for his role as a gay lawyer claimed at the oblivion of AIDS in Philidelphia. Both actors, Both films, were absolutely brilliant. Doesn't matter if one won an award and another didn't, they are both winners in our hearts.
agreed! also, hanks hugs neeson as he is walking up on stage, which says a lot! i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these amazing roles/performances.
I actually think Daniel Day Lewis should've won the best actor oscar for in the name of the father.. He was superb as gerry conlon. But that's just my opinion
Am I the only one who thinks that Denzel Washington was better than Tom Hanks in Philadelphia. And that ?Liam Neeson should have won for Schindler's list that year.
Anthony hopkins was bloody magnificent in the remains of the day. He gave a much much superior performance than Tom Hanks. Day Lewis was probably 2nd best. But Hopkins and Day Lewis had won oscars in the same category just a couple of years prior and Anthony Hopkins refused to even campaign this time around. Liam Neeson was terrific as well but simply based on the strength of the performance Anthony Hopkins is the one who should have won. But subtlety has never been the Academy's preference.
Plus, he cries during his speech which makes it impossible for me to hate him. But I would have gone for Liam's outstanding performance or Anthony's, definitely (but Hopkins should have an oscar every year so there should be a category just for him).
Marie Baudino I think this was a strong Best Actor Category and personally i loved all 5 of those talented actors so i was not so disappointed to see hanks win. I was sided towards Liam because of my love for Schindler's list but Hopkins was undoubtedly the best.
I remember watching Tom Hanks winning his first Oscar, my mom went "happily nuts" because that's her all-time favorite actor since the TV show 'Bosom Buddies'. I'm also a huge Tom Hanks fan (but not as huge as my mom) and 'Philadelphia' is my all-time favorite film (before 'Forrest Gump' by an inch)! This is one of my all-time favorite Oscar acceptance speech!
I really think Liam Neeson deserved to win but Hanks has quite possibly the most poetic and heartbreaking speech in Oscar history. And the man is just the nicest, coolest, most down-to-earth human in the industry. Props to him.
The way Sir. Anthony Hopkins was clapping for him, that's true life goals!

If you don't cry to this, you don't have a heart. The maybe most important Oscar in history.
real men dont cry
Marcus Klacke Real men don't cry? What the frick kind of comment is that my friend? Get a fricken life, you are obviously biased SOB.
Youre obviously gay.
Marcus Klacke Don't confuse real men with heartless assholes.
ronnie rodriguez i can tell youre a girlie man
I love Antonio's hair flip at 0:42.
Thats gotta be the best Oscar speech of all times ! ..... Tom Hanks is a legend
It's strange when I watch Hanks here. Though he's genuinely grateful, notice how he keeps looking in Neeson's direction... I get the vice that he feels like he just robbed Liam and probably think he deserved it more than he did.
That said, still a fine speech, and he did well in Philadelphia.
he also hugs him as he is walking up on stage. i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these performances.
This speech was so good, it inspired a comedy in 1997 called "In & Out."
And he's gay....
Facts lol
This movie was shown to me by my parents when I was young, because they thought it would help me start to see multiple sides to an ongoing debate that seemingly had only one side to it. They succeeded. I thank Mr. Hanks for beyond so brave and taking this role, and teaching us all a message of "what it means to be human".
EASILY the best acceptance speech ever given.
and you've heard them all?
Not at all, even by a long shot.
I want to read some opinions of why others think his speech is horrible. I think its heartwarming and probably one of my favorites
They're probably God haters or gay haters
Tom Hanks was good in Philadelphia but it was Denzel Washigton's performance that blew me out of my seat. He (Washington) had the much harder role to play.
I agree completly, but hanks was also great
+Runner legend did you know that densel wasn't even nominated!?
i so agree Denzel's performance in Philly was just fantastic!
yea agreed but at the time hanks was bout to burst
Just see the scene where hanks sings opera again :) thats the reason hanks was nominated to the oscars ;)
I love Anthony Hopkins for giving Tom a little tap on the cheek after Tom won. Good sport, Good friends.
If they gave 'best actor' award to anybody else that year...OSCAR would have lost all legitimacy.
Tom Hanks deserved to win this. I'm not just sure, I'm HIV positive.
***** I'm HIV positive that I'm being serious.
Sparks. Its not over baby because your HIV positive remember that.
Erica Daniel I'm HIV positive that a lot of people missed my joke.
***** I'm HIV positive that you didn't get the joke either.
maybe jokes r for another life?
I swear if you just strolling down , and you’re updated with what’s going on the movie looks like Pedophilia instead of Philadelphia 😳
Tom is so humble and kind in his Oscar acceptance speeches! He was so deserving of this Award. This was a very difficult role to pull off and he did so with such grace and humanity! God Bless you Tom! 😁🗽🇱🇷
Tom Hanks; Who is the President of the USA 😎
Tom Hanks is profound and intelligent. He does not need a degree from elite schools but it is something that lies deep within
Tearing up in dec 2022
RIP kiddo.
He speech is awesome ..why bc its natural...n sincere....not a robotic speech like others do...wtg tom...I love all ur movies
He should have won for Apollo 13 too.

BRAD PITT 100% agree
i dont normally agree with noface + trump, but i definitely do here!
Philadelphia is a great movie, and Hanks well deserved his Award.
Emma gave Tom his first Oscar, and now they've just costarred in Saving Mr. Banks. That's six degrees and then some!
This film helped change attitudes toward gay people and AIDS victims. I think the proof is shown in how many states now allow same sex Marriage. A groundbreaking film that only succeeded because of Tom Hanks performance, A well deserved Oscar.
sirTittytwister afflicted ? and how did they get AIDS again ? please remind me
BRAD PITT
...when you say "THEY", which section of, THOSE people are YOU referring to?
Tom Hanks is a phenomenal actor but lets be honest Neeson was robbed
LOVED this movie, love Tom Hanks, and Denzel Washington. there will never be another movie like this!
Robbed Neeson
Tom Hanks' win was needed at the time. Lewis' performance did not need an award. It spoke for itself.

I wish tom hanks was my father. .. :, (
😭
Hats off to you Tom Hanks. You deserved it :)
That all people are created equal
No they are not : (
Who told you that ? Oh wait, never mind i know : (
Laurence Fishburne was fucking awesome and disgusting in What's love got to do with it , at least he got a nomination for it.
Tom hanks ganó merecidamente este Oscar, pero voy a decir hasta el final de mis días que Denzel Washington merecía ganar un Oscar por Filadelfia.
Goosebumps every time i watch it
So passionate; it's obvious he was overcome with the shock and joy accompanied by winning an Academy Award. I would.
Cliffhanger was a good one! I agree
you really think a piece of shit movie like cliffhanger's lead cast would won an oscar? what a moron, nice noodley arms kid
alex blend can i only give the first half of your comment a like?
And fast forward a few years, and Tom and Emma were in Saving Mr Banks together!
why am I binge watching this acceptance speeches?
2:35-3:50 just shattered me completely. I was not ready for this. What an honour to be a 90s girl and to have grown up on his lap, 10,000 miles away from me but at times closer than my own family. I love you Mr Hanks.
It’s beautiful to see that love message from almost 30 years ago , nevertheless I can’t believe there are still people who hates another people for loving each other
Tom Hanks has great acting in Philadelphia.
I still can’t believe pizzagate tom Hanks
Liam Neeson was magnificent equal Ralph Fiennes, can't understand why he doesn't won this...
The moral winner is Liam Neeson
hanks hugs neeson as he is walking up on stage, which says a lot! i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these amazing roles/performances.
Tom hanks was incredible in philidelphia, but I have to say that Liam neeson in Schindler's list deserved to win this!
hanks hugs neeson as he is walking up on stage. i think both men accept that theyre both pinnacle in their craft for these performances.
Replace the word 'but with, 'and'.
This interpretation is devastating, no one else could win this prize! fully deserved.
david thewlis NAKED
clint eastwood IN THE LINE OF FIRE
One of my favourite actors...
Am I the only one who thinks that Denzel Washington was better than Tom Hanks in Philadelphia. And that ?Liam Neeson should have won for Schindler's list that year.
Liam Neeson has to won the Oscar. He was played like a director, president.
I was sided towards Liam because of my love for Schindler's list but Hopkins was undoubtedly the best.
but the pat on the cheek that sir anthony gives hanks would be worth more than a symbolic scrap of metal.
Not a single political bs comment. All about acceptance, tolerance, and love.
Which many people still did not possess back then
Don't like the "god" stuff though.
@@thomaspuhringer8332 yea I agree. I can do without that stuff myself.
Tom Hanks is an amazing actor! The pinnacle of acting!
years later this speech still draws such emotion
The man is excellent in every film he does. One of the greatest speeches in Oscar history, if not the best. I love Tom Hanks.
Absolutely beautiful speech, Tom!
2:17 This part inspired the movie In & Out
I really think Liam Neeson deserved to win but Hanks has quite possibly the most poetic and heartbreaking speech in Oscar history. And the man is just the nicest, coolest, most down-to-earth human in the industry. Props to him.
