  • In video 4, I talk about the prostate cancer biopsy. The headline is that the procedure is painless and nothing to worry about. I will share more about the tests that were conducted prior to the biopsy as well as my experience with the produce.

For anyone with high PSA, I just want to say that I DID have a multi-parametric MRI prior to getting a biopsy, and I am glad I did. I took a CD of the imagery home with me, and after studying it for a day or two, and checking the internet for what prostate cancer looks like on MRI on the web, I was ready to go for a prostatectomy, even before the PIRADS 4 report came back. My VA doctor required me to do a biopsy first for staging. Because I had the MRI information, the biopsy was done as a systematic 12-core plus FOCAL FUSION biopsy, with 3 additional specimens directed precisely through the lesion area in the transition zone apex. Those samples confirmed a Gleason 4+5 lesion. The imagery suggested a probable low risk of extra-prostatic extension or seminal vesicle invasion, so after a CT scan for other lesions, and a Technetium99 bone scan for possible bone metastasis, I was given the go-ahead for robotic prostatectomy. With a PSA of 5.4 and an estimated 85cc prostate, I thought my PSA was simply caused by the excess volume of my prostate. The MRI proved that dead wrong. Without it the 1.6cm lesion might have been missed by a systematic biopsy (all 12 of my systematic cores were negative), so the MRI was definitely a Good Thing for me. MRI first is now the standard of care in Europe, and will likely soon be here also. Do it!

Hi Chris am having one this Month the 21st because my PSA levels went from 1.2 to a 4.0 in less than 4 months and I had another blood test done and it only went down to 3.9, I hope it’s going to be painless thanks for the explaining the biopsy and good luck to you

Thanks for sharing and helping to put some of my nerves at rest (...kinda, haha). So hey...you didn't have any issues experiences of ED following your biopsy? In addition to some other things...that has been in the back of my mind

My biopsy was done 10 days ago. The needle freezing was alarming but ok. He started taking 12 core samples. The freezing took some time although it’s a quick acting freezing. The first 2 samples hurt. He then waited a minute, the next 10 were painless. Lots of blood in colon and urine for first day. Overall, I’d rather go to dentist.... but rather ok once freezing kicks in.

Chris, I wouldn’t call it completely painless or not uncomfortable. The needle stick for the local anesthesic is a little twinge and alarming considering where it is coming from. I did feel a little pain in some sticks, but maybe that was my mind playing tricks. But relatively, yes it was painless considering what they are doing.

I am glad you only had a little pain as well. Definitely worth the pain to get answers. Hope you are doing well on your journey.

      Chris Hartley
Update, I am looking at surgery in July. My PSA keeps rising with a recent Gleason score of 4+3. Really appreciate your sharing your experience to give me a heads up on what’s ahead.

I would never discourage anyone from getting the biopsy. There is no other way to get what they need. For me the prostate biopsy was not painless but I sucked it up and plowed through. I really think it is different for different people depending upon your nerve bundle. The process really felt like they had no anesthetic at all. They started, I cussed for the first two, they paused...gave me some more lidocaine and said they would wait. I said to just keep going and I'd count off the plugs instead of throwing f-bombs. About the time they finished the pain killer kicked in. The minor leaking blood was not a fun experience either but that subsided in a few hours.

Have you bought your supplies for post-op. I’m looking for advice on the leakage after the catheter comes out

I am in the process now. I have a message out to my doctor to confirm his recommendation on pads. There are two main options from what I have been able to find. This first is the insert pad and the other is a full brief. I am considering buying both in case there is heavy leakage in the days following the catheter removal. I will let you know what my Dr. recommends.

wilecoyote123 I will post about surgery prep but I wanted to get back to you about the supplies. I went with the absorbent brief for immediately following surgery. The nurse said that with the catheter the shields may slip. I did purchase shields as well so that I can move from the briefs as soon as possible.

For those people who are going to get a biopsy it cannot be stressed enough that your going to have blood in your ejaculate.....a LOT of blood.....think Campbells tomato soup type blood. Its gonna last probably a month. I dont think this is stressed strongly enough and it can cause major anxiety when it doesnt appear to be getting better. The blood in your urine will be maybe some blood clots and junk the first urination then pinkish for a cpl days after which its gone. Your prostate has undergone major trauma in this procedure and it shows by what your semen looks like.

Hello,If there was any blood in urine etc, it must have been minute in my case, as I did not see any, there could have been some when I first urinated but I was not looking for it .But none after that.@@flmoseley8141

EXCUSE ME YOU NEED TO SAY ALL MEN ARE DIFFERENT MY HUSBAND WAS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE AND WHEN THE NEEDLE WAS NUMBING THE AREAS IT DID HURT AND WHEN THEY TOOK THE SAMPLES WHEN HE WAS TAKING THEM IT SOUNDED LIKE A STAPLE GUN DON'T BE SAYING ITS PAINLESS I WAS THERE WITH MY HUSBAND HE HATED IT.

I agree with you about every experience is different. I can only speak about my personal experiences through this process. My main point is the same as yours that given the biopsy is the best way to confirm if cancer is present, the pain is something you have to work through. Luckily I found that the pain was minimal and not what I had built it up to be. My hope is that my message will encourage men to have biopsy when the time comes and not let the fear stand in the way. Thanks for watching.
