The Vulfpeck song is literally called "3 on E", and its lyrics (as is the melody) are a direct homage to the great bass lines of the past that feature 3 consistent strikes of the E string on the beat, namely "Hollywood Swinging" by Kool & the Gang, "Another One Bites the Dust" by Queen, and of course, "Good Times" by Chic and the late legend Bernard Edwards. Love them both! Great lesson as always! Thanks Scott and Ian!
Though it comes with ernie ball cobalt flats, Joe plays with Thomastik infeld jazz flats on the musicman- 👀bright red silks. That’s the full scale version- the shorty has a pickguard. Always happy to hear more vulf appreciation in the world!
Interestingly, if you get a chance to see Vulfpeck's performance at Bonaroo, they actually kick off 3 on E with a medley of all the songs you pointed out here. I heard that and immediately recalled this episode. Good stuff...
More VULFPECK please! (And maybe some more PRIMUS! LETS GO!) - You two THUMP! Love the longer videos as well... So much awesome content here! Cheers from Canada!
1979 till early 1980s was an "3 on E" bass line era. If you dig deep you'll find dozens of bass lines that are similar to "Good Times". Lately, it's hip again to use it. Just check Dua Lipa's "Break My Heart", Doja Cat's "Say So" or Justin Timberlake's "Can't Stop The Feeling".

Nice vid as always guys. Plus, Wal basses have never had the love they deserved over the decades. That one is an absolute beauty. Why not teach people parts of Brand X's Wal to Wal? That's be pretty cool.
That "horn Line" IT'S BARNY MILLER!!!!! Hear it in there? I'm not sure about "to each his own". the timbre changes, and at least on viol family instruments or acoustics (me = double bass) there are often instructions as to wha is where. Rabbath has a piece that is "call and response" that is the same phrase played at different places (same notes) and it's such an obvious difference. Even here I hear it....I really try to find out fingerings if I am playing something composed by someone else........I'll get my coat. But GREAT VID! thank you Bald Brothers.
Yes! What everyone else shared with a little bit of the theme from the old tv show "Barney Miller"..... its a lotta little bit of everything...such joy!
I don't think I've ever payed an original bass line in my life, even in bands where we made original music. Everything seems to have been done under the sun, when you dig deep enough.
Everyone "steals". Even Jaco did, and admitted to it. You just gotta steal with style, and that involves adding your personal touch to whatever riff you're borrowing from, and developing it further. And that's harder than it sounds.
NO! I don't ever "Steal". That's why You have never heard of me! . I think it's impossible not to do it even unconsciously. We may not even be aware that we ever heard whatever it is. It's happened loads to me.
Béla Bartók bit Beethoven’s 13th & 14th string quartet intros but only the beginning. I think if someone borrows a motif and takes it somewhere else, that’s in tradition of how things have always been.
I like those other songs of course, but i LOVE 3 On E so much! Joe is a killer, Cory is one of the best players out there, Antwan Stanley is near the top of my deserted island list of singers. And if all that isn't the coolest ever, lets throw Theo in there too, just to make sure we blow the top off of the meter!
Jaco pastorius Victor wooten James jamerson, a bit of flea stanley clark etc etc. People like us who play music instead of songs on an instrument sometimes speak the same words.
Bernard was once asked what strings he used...he said whatever came on the bass, and he had never changed them - ("Good Times" Riff). He IS the man. All in his fingers.
So has John Taylor, John Deacon, Guy Pratt. If you're trying to get people dancing Bernard Edwards is about as good as they get. I plan on ripping him off at a wedding next week😂
It's important to remember that music is a continuum, and that it's incredibly rare for an artist to reinvent an instrument. It's expected to borrow or outright steal to bring things into one's playing. For me, that's totally fine. What I find more annoying is that fans of certain bands might worship a particular musician thinking they're a unique and generational talent, when really they're getting plaudits for ripping off DFA1979, or copping Francis Rocco Prestia licks.
Hello I can hear the first part sounds like kool and the gang Hollywood swinging and the second part sound like the bass line for the start up song on barnyard Miller old TV show that what I hear don't think anything was stolen just great bass lines
Antwaun Stanley explains in the lyrics 3 on E is an ancient funk secret passed down orally lol. This video is just more proof of that concept 🤣 vulfpeck being musically prophetic yet again
When the theft is blantant it should be a homage/tribute, which is a complement that directs people to the original innovator. Keeping quiet implies youre happy letting people believe you did the hard work. Give credit where it is due or add enough of your own thing to make it yours.
Boys, Big brother weighing in, you can tell that Joe listened to Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, from the last part of riff starting in E. It’s Tears of a Clown
There's 11 notes, no one is gonna play anything new, nothing can really be called stealing at this point anymore...music is just fusing, influencing, and evolving. Musically paying tribute to your influences in the open by musical homage should be encouraged. I think Jellyfish was the first band to openly wear all of their musical influences on their sleeves; Here's some Beatles, here's some Who, here's some Queen...
I've been playing bass since 1983. Still not very well. But something I have consistently fought against; Bass Players Neck. That swan like movement. So uncool! 😁 Just tap your foot ffs! 😁
Poor video name guys. The entire "3 on E" thing is clearly a tribute, acknowledging the greats of the past. Anyway - didn't Stratton write it? Joe Dart has said in interview that he's a sideman and he plays what he is told.
Three on E has always just sounded like a funkier version of the old Barney Miller TV Theme, especially the ending of each phrase. ruclips.net/video/cmiC0C6Dkgo/видео.html
Joe dart couldn't touch Benard Edwards on his best day. Also Cleary he's been influenced be Chic. Its funny how black music has always been appropriated by others but is rarely ever celebrated on the same level. Its the Elvis syndrome .Side note I'm not sure where you guys are located . But if you (or anyone else who reads this ) are even in NYC . You should go check out the great Fred Thomas . From the original JB's (James brown) . This man lives in BK and does regular gigs and master classes . Although you get the master class for the cost of entry at one of his regular gigs.
I just noticed Good Times, Another One Bites The Dust, 3 On E, and Hollywood Swinging are all in different keys. I smell an Idea for explaining modes here lol
Joe Dart and vulfpeck rip off everyone and they know it! It’s a music appreciation project. They aren’t bringing anything new to the musical conversation whatsoever and they’re not trying to.

Don't forget I need you Tonight by INXS. And yeah, the idea that you can "steal" a rhythm patern is ridiculous
That song is a gigantic tribute, not a ripoff...and it's actually super enjoyable.
Then again, what Vulfpeck/TFF song isn't enjoyable?
did you just repeat the intro of the video?
Did Joe Dart RIP OFF Chic?! yes, next question ! Seriously who has never ripped off Chic
Lars Ulrich
Solid point! And if you haven't ripped off a little Bernard Edwards yet, why not??
Another One Bites the Dust!
Not me, I stole Chics bike and I been pedaling it ever since.
And Francis Rocco Prestia
That chromatic walk-up from the 2nd to the 3rd is one of Joe's favorite moves. You can find it all over his bass lines.
It's from the OG of the "3 on E" bass lines. The song that started it all - Kool & The Gang's "Hollywood Swinging" from 1973.
I use it all the time now because of him
@@XanBcoo Me too!
@@XanBcoo Yep, me too.
That’s a bass funk trope. One of the reasons Joe Dart is so cool is because he takes those old tropes and modernizes them
The second fill part calls me back to Weather Report’s Birdland a bit. Does anyone else hear that?
Can you guys please do a video on the genius of Bernard Edwards! SO many amazing basslines! Thinking Of You by Sister Sledge being my favourite!

Yes, but I also need a tutorial for how to move the neck, exactly like he does! 🤗
The end of that second part sounds like the seasame street theme to me for some reason
Well, the melody of that part of the Sesame Street theme is also based around a dominant scale.
Every great artist is a magpie at heart. How they apply it is what sets them apart......
I don't think I've ever payed an original bass line in my life, even in bands where we made original music. Everything seems to have been done under the sun, when you dig deep enough.
2:36 This is hilarious when Scott shows us how to not play it : ). The creativity though.

Did Joe Dart rip off chickens neck move !?
Bernard is a Master and Joe a little Elf (ridiculous)
Joe Dart's chiropractor has his work cut out for him.
yeah, Joe is going to have major neck issues down the line
The Joe Dart bass is based on a Sterling not a Stingray.
That "horn line" is part of the Barney Miller theme song.

I didn't like until the joke at the end
Joe Dart probably did rip off Bernard Edwards and Bernard would be proud that his legacy is being carried on by such a great young bassist.

Joe is AWESOME, but BERNARD EDWARDS is the source of all this kind if thing, James Jamesrson is amazing, but for this stuff, it's all Bernard
Hmm either way he is not a favor of mine
Did Greenday rip off Chicago? Did Prince rip off James Brown? This list of questions and obvious answers is extremely long.
If you're NOT ripping off Bernard Edwards, are you even playing funk bass?
He didn't steal anything. Just playing a musicman with flats thats all
😅 sure he did
I would call Joe Dart a poseur if he DIDN'T rip off Edwards.

All of their music is derivative and sounds like a warm up jam.
