Interesting; I too bought the course after having deep-dived his back catalogue and never really questioned the reviews -- the course is like his vids, but better. Less flash, steady content, but still with the trademark humor.
Confession time: I started guitar 25 years ago starting from step 55. It was really hard for me to go back to the basics and relearn everything the proper way. Then I moved to bass, and luckily most of what I learned can be transferred to this instrument (apart from plucking, which I really sucked at first). Thanks Josh for preventing people like me from learning the wrong way!
Got to step 20 and had to stop the video to go and pick up my bass. Which I hadn't played in almost a year. You are something else, Josh, never stop teaching, your love for bass is just contagious. Thank you for reminding me I love playing music.
hi Josh, I am on the second run of your Beginner to badass course. I am extremely pleased with the results and am anxiously waiting for you to release a new course from intermediate to advanced. PLEASE let us know something, I don't want to end up in someone else's clutches
I learned playing Bass 8 years ago pretty intensively, but still, i watch every video of yours because they are really good and often still have many good tips!
Oh wow I'm in this video at the 00:18 second mark! This channel, Josh himself and the lessons have helped me get better in a big way. I learned how to slow things down to get it right and increase the difficulty and keep working at it and it has helped me keep motivated and learn things that I thought I'd never get better at like octave shapes, string switching and not cutting off notes when they need to ring out. I started the b2b course in late september and finished in about a month and a half and since then I have learned about 20 songs I owe a lot of it to those lessons, the community on bassbuzz and the lessons from the videos on this channel to help me get started!
Beginner to Badass is a great course. I wish my bass instructor 20 years ago had been as helpful and as awesome as Josh. Thank you for doing what you do!
I’ve been trying to teach myself bass for almost two years (your vids have been a HUGE part of it!) and this video will be incredibly handy for me to use to reference things I need to go back and work on - which is a fair bit! Most importantly, though, this also made me realise how far I’ve come. There are elements of each stage I’m fairly comfortable with, which I find insane to think about, and realising that has put a bit of a spring in my step this morning! Maybe I’ll pick a point and once I’m comfortable with everything up to it, I’ll finally treat myself to a nice shiny new bass. Thank you!
Josh is the best! Period! There are good Bass teacher and courses out there, but no one is better than Josh and his BassBuzz BTB course. He knows how to teach in a way that is fun and never overwhelming, he likes whats he is doing; is not all about the money. BazzBuss Beginner to Bad Ass has a ton of features for an unbelievable price, just compare the cost benefit vs the other "famous" bassists. I've learned a lot with you Josh, thank you very much, keep up the good work!
I feel really proud to have accomplished most of these things but I’ll never forget Josh saying he wish he played in his 20s more but now I’m 20 and I don’t want to stop playing I vow to stay strong against the resistance
Also a B2B Student here and I can wholeheartedly recommend buying Joshs course! It get's you to a point where you know all the important things to venture out on your own and explore music. Does it spit you out as a perfect bass machine? Absolutely not, you'll have a ton of stuff to work on, but you're competent enough to get your feet wet in the music that YOU want to play. The forum is filled with supportive people who geek out about gear or what songs they're covering at the moment. Some stay for the duration of their course, others have been there for years, it really is a cool place to start. From there on out, just learn what you feel would give you the biggest benefit. Chord Tones from Talking Bass for example is a good next stop, others go over to SBL. So Josh: When do we get more specialized courses from you so we don't have to go throw our money at other teachers? 😛
Great video, but I was waiting for „ear training“ - I auditioned with a band recently and did not get the job because I wasn’t able to hear a song once and then play along to it as the rest of the band did. And now I‘m not sure how to proceed with that. Would be cool to get advice from you on that.
I've been stuck lately, not knowing what to do with all the information on the internet about playing bass and music in general. I watched a lot of videos on the BassBuzz channel, but it's easy to lose track of the order in which to learn. But this video gave me a steady path to follow! I'll start playing bass again when my summer vacation starts. Thank you so much for this video
I have tried learning to play the bass with a private teacher for a year. Dropped that and got Josh’s course. So worth itttt! I’ve already made way more progress
Yeah! I am just waiting til I have the time and money to start the beginner to badass course. With life and kids and all, both are scarce but it WILL happen. Until then I play the base notes of the chords with my little band, but even that is fun because I have waited 7 years to even pick up the beautiful bass I bought. Love your videos, you're an amazing teacher.
i can vouch for his course , as someone who knew nothing about music or even how to hold a bass prior to his course, it is a game changer. Not only that u can learn in ONE MONTH. That is not a joke , as long as you commit to the lessons daily (which arent even long mind you ) you can get a creat foundation and even play yoyr favorite songs in no time
This is a really good list as far as I can tell (as someone who can put checkmarks next to almost all points, after many years of self-learning). Maybe I missed them, but two more aspects seem useful: - develop your ear. I regret not putting in the work much earlier, and I still have a long way to go, but being able to figure out basslines by ear and to hear what the musicians around you are doing harmonically is really useful. - learn to read sheet music. For bassists, that's a niche skill, but if you want to go "beyond badass" you should not be totally lost when your bigband leader or the arranger in your studio session hands you the sheet music for a piece.
Hi Josh. Your beginner to badass course is the best I've come across, hands down. I'm learning bass, guitar and piano atm (yes at the same time) so I've brought a handfull of online courses and yours is by far the best.
My name is Jason and I took Josh's Beginner to Badass Course two and a half years ago, and I highly approve of it. Worth the cost, and I still go back to check the chord charts and tabs for the songs he wrote up. Please check it out. Thanks Josh, and thank you for continuing to put out useful free content here as well!
I wish I had all this information back in the day - love the channel. All my early "lessons" were limited to a friend showing me how to tune, know the notes of the fret board, and learn the notes on the F clef. Then I was off and running, meaning I learned everything by ear. It may have been the long way around, but the challenge kept me going for 50 years. The "joke" graphic at 10:40 is what I learned on day one :)
As someone starting and saving to get the full experience as a self birthday present, this video and the guideline is highly appreciated to know which while to walk meanwhile. Thanks Josh.
I am personally on step 47, learning the baklava mode. It’s wild 😜 I love these videos because it reassures me that through all of the practice, and music theory I am on the right track! I am on around step 53 and exploring writing my own music. Thanks Josh!
This is exactly what I need as someone who has never learned any sort of instrument and wants to learn playing bass from ground zero on my own as a hobbie. Thanks for this very on point video!
i broke my knuckles and couldnt play for months and even tho i havent finished this video i just want to tell ppl that ur course helped me IMMENSELY i have to kinda start all over again but i was doing it everyday for about 4 months before breaking them and genuinely u would think i have been playing for at least a year or two and had knowledge of instruments before (i had none!!!) anyway gonna watch this to kick my ass back into gear but!!!
I started learning bass a month ago and your videos have helped me so much! You have a gift for sharing knowledge and instilling good mindset for perseverance. Thank youuuu
The bassbuzz course is amazing. I would highly recommend it to anyone learning bass. It was my first instrument so I was very intimidated but Josh made it very easy.
I’ve been playing on and off since I was a child. I haven’t played a lot in a long time so when I get back I go back to the basics You’ve definitely helped
Currently learning bass, can already play some sloppy poop, bought my first one yesterday (HB BZ-4000) and scrolled through RUclips like "man I'd love to have an order on how to learn this stuff" This is exactly what I needed right now! Thanks for giving such great structure ❤
learning all the small technique on bass that makes the songs and notes you play or dont play is definitely a challenge but man does it really make your playing style sound so much better it doesnt really take long at all before you can read a tab or play off a backing track where you robotically chug out songs and it pretty much sounds like a song you know where you can turn your amp up and not be embarassed but when you learn how to actually play things in time with the right rhythms and techniques it's so fun
When I started self-learning bass your videos helped me get going, but for over a year now I have a privilege of having private lessons. What surprises me is that while I covered most of stuff to level ~30, I find I have covered elements from level ~50 already! For example scales in multiple octaves. It would be interested to hear some behind-the-scenes thinking why you decided to put some of those elements so late in the list.
This is one of the best videos you've posted, and that's saying alot. I've learned so much already by subscribing. This video is something I am going to commit some serious time to studying. I am an older beginner, but I've been playing 4 years already, and I play in my church's worship band. One of the great things about that is that I get to develop my ability to fit into a band scenario and add to it! Keep up the great work!!
Your video it's mind blowing for me! I'm learning alone and always felt lost and wonder I started right or wrong.... 😅 Thanks to you now, I can check what I have learn so far, to work in the technique and theory I didn't know I needed Thank you much Josh!! You're my heroe ❤ Love from Chile 🇨🇱
In case you were wondering about the From Beginner to Badass course, it's an awesome and fun way to learn bass. Know brain freeze in this course. Glad I purchased it a couple years ago. Good way to stay home and save money on the weekends.
I am grateful to you for the Psycho Killer suggestion. With it I learned staccato in two ways ánd strengthened my left pinky ánd learned to use my right ring finger for plucking in two weeks. It took me less than ten minutes a day. Plucking with three fingers comes in handy when learning triplets and galloping rhythms.
This is easily the best beginner bass video I have watched so far. Its easily understandable, the pacing is excellent, and the information provided is to the point and dosent bog down the video in unnecessary detail. Plus, I enjoyed the humor and analogies. Thank you for making it.
For anyone who is not sure about Josh's "Beginner to Badass" course, get it. It's taught amazingly well and is really fun. In one year, I went from not being able to play anything to making my own basslines that I enjoy as part of a band
I purchased and completed the B2BA course with great succes. I later got free access to the Fender bass course and it was pretty lacking. B2BA is superior and a great course!
Thanks Josh, I rally enjoy your lessons and humor. I'm just here watching your lessons, while waiting on my first bass, after playing guitar for decades. Can't wait to start, I orderded a Squire Classic vibe P Bass in Sunburst. The big advantage is that I can watch first and learn allready what to look at when starting bass. I hope to get it soon, but allready ordered it like 2 months ago.
So look..., I'm starting over since not really playing, for like a very long time. I'm loving Josh, his energy and obviously skills. Can anyone advocate for the paid lessons in a way that makes sense. I mean there's so much he's giving away. I'm willing but I don't quite get why I would buy the lessons. Can yout ell I've never bought lessons before?!
I very much appreciate this video because of your effort into what you do and this is an infinitely useful tool for myself. Even if I learn everything for free from you, I'll probably buy your course once I got the dough. I did the same with permaculture (and for the certificate); where I learned everything online from reading and teachers yet i still bought the course to respect the art. Much love, much funk.
Love this but after 16 years of just muddling around with the bass the thing that developed me more than anything was joining a band. Focuses the mind, you actually make music from nothing and it’s great fun.
Thank you for making this video and the PDF Josh, I have a lot of respect for you and the team for making these videos and providing a lot of value. You helped inspire me to get into bass in the first place!
Thanks Josh, I already completed the bass buzz course but as im pushing through the intermediate stage i’ve hit many plateaus where I felt I needed more structure. This helps a lot with things to think about!
This may sound like sacrilege but can you make some electric guitar lesson videos? Maybe with a new channel? I really like your teaching style, and I’ve seen you play the guitar in some of these bass videos lol
It's become obvious that I'm skipping steps. I've been playing for almost 4 years and can do slap, 16th notes, syncopation, etc, all through learning different songs. Now it's time for me to buckle down and learn to ear train, in addition to learning more theory (beyond the names of the notes and the major and minor scales).
i would love to see videos about the more advanced stuff you mention near the end of the video, also like double thumbing or strumming chords or tapping and whatnot, im tryna learn jerry was a racecar driver and you cant hold no groove rn and its all very new and awesome
Just want to say to you all new bass players out there that the Beginner to Badass course is GREAT! Worth every penny! It's fun, motivating and quite complete! You will thank yourself every day for doing it. Just do it
I played the violin for 6 years, got burned out and switched to bass. The finger dexterity for fretting came easy and I know music theory but muting is driving me NUTS! Pretty excited to be getting cleaner tones in the future though!
Love the channel and the course. Well worth buying. In my opinion the best presented and easy to understand. I owe most of my bass progress to that course. I would love it if you made another one that builds on the beginner to badass! Any chance of that happening Josh? Love the content and the way you teach ❤
Here's 2 tips: 1. Go to live music shows in small venues. Now you can "feel" the bass. Most records and even venues process the bass to fit the rest of the bands. You can't feel anything. 2. Go to a music/guitar store as often as you can. Not only can you try for free, but you will meet and hear real bass players jamming.
being self taught in a time without youtube took me years to learn a lot of these things out of order. I only started learning modes now, 26yrs after I started.
Hello from Wales UK, i just wanted to let you know how much i enjoy watching / learning on your channel, im 56 and just brand new to bass, but already have 3 basses 2 practice amps 2 ashdown cabs and 2 ampeg cabs and 5 bass head amps, and way too many pedals and leads, but hey, im looking for my tone right?🤣😂🤣and always pays to be prepared right!? 😂, and i really do appreciate your time and effort to help uber noobs like me 👍 so huuuuuuuge thanks and respect to you buddy.
One of your suggestions that helped me is, don't keep your bass in the case but on a stand. The fewer steps between picking up the bass and playing the better.
How do you keep yourself excited about learning bass, so you don’t get crushed by THE RESISTANCE? 👊
I get crushed. Then I'll try and try and till I'm crushed again
I go back over some old lessons and ramp it up again. It's like taking a few steps backwards then running at the closed door. Resistance is futile! (unless you are 7 of 9).
Find a pro expensive bass teacher (not a guitar teacher), keep seeing him
idk but i just got my first 🐟🎸 2day🥱

Josh is a kick ass teacher. I took his B2B course, and loved it. Josh you're the man! Thank you for your kick ass instruction.
Great video, but I was waiting for „ear training“ - I auditioned with a band recently and did not get the job because I wasn’t able to hear a song once and then play along to it as the rest of the band did. And now I‘m not sure how to proceed with that. Would be cool to get advice from you on that.
rick beato has a course specifically on ear training
I've been stuck lately, not knowing what to do with all the information on the internet about playing bass and music in general. I watched a lot of videos on the BassBuzz channel, but it's easy to lose track of the order in which to learn. But this video gave me a steady path to follow! I'll start playing bass again when my summer vacation starts.
Thank you so much for this video
Just bought my bass today! Thankyou for all the resources you provide (throughout your whole channel)
hows it going so far?
I have tried learning to play the bass with a private teacher for a year. Dropped that and got Josh’s course. So worth itttt! I’ve already made way more progress
The Beginner to Badass course was worth the money. He presents it in a humorous way, while you're learning.
If you have a problem "hearing" a major sixth interval, just think of it as the "Soulman" interval. Just a tiny tip that helped me a lot.
i can vouch for his course , as someone who knew nothing about music or even how to hold a bass prior to his course, it is a game changer.
Not only that u can learn in ONE MONTH.
That is not a joke , as long as you commit to the lessons daily (which arent even long mind you ) you can get a creat foundation and even play yoyr favorite songs in no time
Bass buzz is WELL worth the money, I love it! I appreciate how you make these videos too, seriously you’ve helped me so much
This is a really good list as far as I can tell (as someone who can put checkmarks next to almost all points, after many years of self-learning). Maybe I missed them, but two more aspects seem useful:
- develop your ear.
Best TEACHER ever!!!!
im trying to buy my first bass, ive learned so much from watching ur vids
I'm going for the plunge at the end of the month and buying the course !!! It best be good!!
It is! Just be warned that this level of nerdy humour is absolutely the way it's going to be. But in terms of teaching skills - he is second to none.
@@PeterPrestonUK I like the nerdy humour
You won't regret it!
I haven’t played a lot in a long time so when I get back I go back to the basics
You’ve definitely helped
Currently learning bass, can already play some sloppy poop, bought my first one yesterday (HB BZ-4000) and scrolled through RUclips like "man I'd love to have an order on how to learn this stuff"
This is exactly what I needed right now! Thanks for giving such great structure ❤
100% recommend beginner to badass course
Best. Course. Ever.
learning all the small technique on bass that makes the songs and notes you play or dont play is definitely a challenge but man does it really make your playing style sound so much better it doesnt really take long at all before you can read a tab or play off a backing track where you robotically chug out songs and it pretty much sounds like a song you know where you can turn your amp up and not be embarassed but when you learn how to actually play things in time with the right rhythms and techniques it's so fun
You’re the goat Josh, I’ve mostly learned how to play bass from your videos and you just keep putting out great resources for people to learn
Your video it's mind blowing for me! I'm learning alone and always felt lost and wonder I started right or wrong.... 😅
Thanks to you now, I can check what I have learn so far, to work in the technique and theory I didn't know I needed
Thank you much Josh!! You're my heroe ❤
Love from Chile 🇨🇱
In case you were wondering about the From Beginner to Badass course, it's an awesome and fun way to learn bass. Know brain freeze in this course. Glad I purchased it a couple years ago.
Good way to stay home and save money on the weekends.
I am grateful to you for the Psycho Killer suggestion. With it I learned staccato in two ways ánd strengthened my left pinky ánd learned to use my right ring finger for plucking in two weeks. It took me less than ten minutes a day.
Plucking with three fingers comes in handy when learning triplets and galloping rhythms.
You are the single best bass teacher out there. Heartfelt thank you.
This is easily the best beginner bass video I have watched so far. Its easily understandable, the pacing is excellent, and the information provided is to the point and dosent bog down the video in unnecessary detail. Plus, I enjoyed the humor and analogies. Thank you for making it.
Thank you, Josh! You are a true mensch and inspiration!
I’ve been wanting such a video since the first day of playing as I am almost a self-taught bass player. Huge thanks and credits to you 🤝
For anyone who is not sure about Josh's "Beginner to Badass" course, get it. It's taught amazingly well and is really fun.
In one year, I went from not being able to play anything to making my own basslines that I enjoy as part of a band
Your best bet is to avoid the internet and just buy the beginner to badass course! I did and don’t regret it. It was the best way for me to learn it.
I purchased and completed the B2BA course with great succes. I later got free access to the Fender bass course and it was pretty lacking. B2BA is superior and a great course!
Wow, that pdf is a treasure trove of bass goodness. Thank you Josh for sharing all this.
Very informative video. Thank you for this. I now look out for every video you post and share the link with friends.
Love this but after 16 years of just muddling around with the bass the thing that developed me more than anything was joining a band. Focuses the mind, you actually make music from nothing and it’s great fun.
I have taken Beginner to Badass and it’s an amazing course!! Learned so much
Thank you for making this video and the PDF Josh, I have a lot of respect for you and the team for making these videos and providing a lot of value. You helped inspire me to get into bass in the first place!
Listen here, RUclips algorithm: this man is a treasure! Keep him on this platform at all costs.
Level 1: 2:14
Level 2: 4:09
Level 3: 6:17
Level 4: 8:49
Level 5: 10:30
Oh my gosh thank you 🙏🏼 bless YOUUUU I’ve been looking for this forever !
Josh you have to release a course called Beyond Badass, It would be great to take it after we finish beginner to badass
Enjoy the journey but don't quit. I have a mentor that helped me get started plus I get to play in a group setting and have fun doing it
This video is the reason I will be buying your course when I can.
I originally started playing guitar but man am I glad I switched bass for life
I love Josh's shirts as much as I love his videos. Cheers.
- Another Josh
you sir are THE MAN! This is easily the best video and guide explaining what to do, and how to do it! Great work! Subscribed ✅
Your videos are so good
It's become obvious that I'm skipping steps.
This is a gold mine of a resource! Thank you so much. 100% Badass
Here's 2 tips:
1. Go to live music shows in small venues. Now you can "feel" the bass. Most records and even venues process the bass to fit the rest of the bands. You can't feel anything.
2. Go to a music/guitar store as often as you can. Not only can you try for free, but you will meet and hear real bass players jamming.
Playing by ear is also a great skill.
Thank you so much !!
being self taught in a time without youtube took me years to learn a lot of these things out of order.
Thanks Josh ❤
Very good video. This is a good way to improve myself as a self taught bassist.
One of your suggestions that helped me is, don't keep your bass in the case but on a stand. The fewer steps between picking up the bass and playing the better.
