Had a TENS machine once, I was really happy when I bought it. I brought it home with me, brimming with hope. I used it once, was really nice. I left it outside of the package for about 5 minutes afterwards; enough time for my cat to sit down ON the stick pads😂.

I have similar item called Micro Z II, considered EMS/TENS unit. Works very good now, but when I had screws and plates in my foot and needed to use it for reduction of pain and edema I could receive multiple shocks. This happened on low settings too. One way we tried to resolve that was adjusting time frame. Leaving it on for less than 5 min and ending session, then gradually building sessions longer. Also placing item on the opposite side of the body than the surgical hardware. My hardware is removed and I tolerate it better now. Highly recommend these units, but inform therapists and doctors if choosing to utilize them.
I love the handouts Dr. Furlan offers b/c there are so many options for using these devices that can enhance pain management. Sometimes pain currents travel to multiple regions so it is nice to use it multiple areas to relieve pains or change different times of day to get relief too. My unit was covered by workman's compensation, so be sure to advocate for yourself and be persistent if necessary to receive the machine right for your situation.

Excellent video, I love my tens units, I have 3 of them. My physical therapist got me my first one at the va hospital, I had a herniated disc and am now fused. When I overdue it I still have some pain and my tens unit relives the pain, I’ll even sleep with it on. Sure beats taking drugs and for me it’s even better relief than painkillers. I’ve found placing one pad over the direct pain area and the other in close proximity works the best for me.

@@DrAndreaFurlan I wish I could have come across you in 99 when I first suffered my injury, to many doctors just wanted to give pain meds, my physical therapist at the va to me was a life saver as I was truly concerned about drug dependency. I was on 75 mg a day of morphine, a quick release and a slow release dose and they wanted to up me to 100mg, best thing I can say is I never took it as directed, those strong meds scare me. Between the fusion and my tens unit I feel like I have control of my life again, I’m 20 years post fusion now. Plus an allograft on my knee, gonna need knee replacement at some point but I’m holding out as long as possible for that.

I’ve delt with back pain since October 1978. I’ve had four back surgeries. I had a tens machine that worked with pads and was portable, clipped on my belt. I had a double fusion of L4 to L5 and L5 toS1. Then in 2018 I had a permanent I planted tens machine installed in my body, with a hand held controller that I can adjust. After having my implant, I sold the hand held model, as I could never use it again with the inplant unit. It has helped but it’s not a cure. My pain management doctor is waiting for my last test results of ex-ray and MRI and he has already hinted that I might have to have my nerves severed in my spine, to achieve relief of pain. I’m 60 and disabled from the work force.

@ Dr Furlan Are you familiar with the Alpha Stim™ Machines? This treatment has been available for a very long time especially in Military Hospitals. These are, imho, much better for Chronic Pain, including Fibromyalgia pain because not only does it not have a limit to how long one can use it but it has also has an accumulative effect. With 2 different machines to choose from, it gives a person the ability to pick the one most suited to their needs. I've used both. the TENs which was much too limiting in both area and time allowed but the Alpha Stim has been a great relief for me as I can apply the patches in multiple places and use for as little as 20 minutes or as long as 24 hours if needed. I would be honored if you looked into these and did a presentation. Thank you.

    Hello Dr. Furlan!
I just discovered your channel a few days ago and so thankful I did. I haven't had a chance to look back through your posts so I am hoping you could refer me to some pain relief from Trigeminal Neuralgia.
Carbamazepine only worked occasionally and has caused heart problems. Indica has helped to put the pain that's in the front of my head and puts it to the back of my head but doesn't get rid of the head banging sensations I get to experience at all times of the day with nighttime being the worst.

Hi Mekdes, if you go to the description of the video (see below the video) you will see some options that I list there for people to find a good machine on Amazon. But most local pharmacies in North America sell these machines. If you can't find, your physiotherapist should be able to help you to find a machine.

Can these tens be used for sciatic pain? I would love to know how to use them, like the right place where to place them.

Hi Nan, yes, it can if it is acute pain. Please ask your physiotherapist to check for you and teach you how to apply. Before you buy the machine, you may try a few sessions with your physiotherapist.
