Finally picked up one of these. Got my PM2 back to shaving sharp. Couldn't quite get the surgical factory edge, but works better than any other sharpener I've used. You'd probably have to throw down for a Wicked Sharp or Edge Pro to do better. Definitely a keeper.

Bought one a couple weeks ago... hugely impressed and I've been sharpening blades for over 20yrs. Muscle memory of the angle is very important and the angle guides do a great job of training your muscles. Took a very dull kitchen knife that I hadn't sharpened in a few months (used Japanese water stones last time), and it was impressively sharp in minutes. The leather strop was dry as a bone right out of the box so I added a generous bit of honing oil to moisturize it then loaded it with green chromium oxide compound and it's perfect. I've also got a worksharp Ken onion edition belt sharpening system and a worksharp 3000 for my woodworking tools - all around they've got a stellar lineup for sharpening

Couldn't disagree with you more - product is disappointing and not fit for purpose. Have now tries to use this product on a simple folding hunting knife - does not provide an edge that is usable at all. Forget shaving the hairs off your arms - you'd have to scrub the knife up and down and I'd still think they'd still be there.

I've had a number of :field" sharpeners over the years, but nearly all of them were just honing rods. This is a real sharpener. I've used it to sharpen everything up to an 8: chef's knife. I have it with me everywhere I can expect to encounter a knife.

The ceramic rod is probably for microbeveling. That's why it's at a steeper angle.

I used to not like serrations, but over time I've found myself using them increasingly for really quick and efficient cutting. And they save my pain edge, especially with hard plastics. Serrations make for quick and easy work. Try using them more often. You'll find they really do come in handy for really quick cutting where a plain edge would take forever, and leave you with a dull edge.

I bought this sharpener based on your review and it's been excellent. I am not very good sharpening, so it's nice to have something that helps out. The only issue I have is that - like you mention in the review - the guides on the ceramic rods are not the same angle as the stones. Not sure why.

I would set the thing on a log, flat rock, anything. The only way I would hold it in my hand would be for fish hooks or tiny pen blades & such. Besides, if ya set it on a fairly decent surface, it's going to be a heck of a lot more stable & consistent.....vs....trying to hold it steady. It would be much easier, don't ya think? Pretty cool little field sharpener system though, for work tool type blades.

I believe the ceramic rods are set at a steeper angle because they are for honing the blade (removing the bur) then the leather strip is used once complete to polish the finished edge.

Thank you for your review on the Work Sharp field sharpener. I have recently purchased a Spyderco Manix 2 lightweight (thanks to your review) and am not comfortable sharpening using the stones that I own. I can get a decent sharpness, good for working with, but doesn't cut paper super well.
With the Work Sharp field sharpener, I feel confident to sharpen my new knife without worrying as much to damaging the blade. Paper is now easily sliced through with ease with only a minute or so to sharpen. I am impressed.

Great video, the angle goes from 20 to 25 degrees on the ceramic to break off the burr the developed on both sides as we go from one side to the next. We are to lighten the pressure and pass it less aggressively.

  • @joshuajacob6402
    @joshuajacob6402 9 лет назад

I believe the 25 degree on the ceramic side is more aimed toward hitting that secondary bevel to refine the edge. Hope that helps with why the sharpener transitions from 20 to 25 degrees.

A great little tool. that always goes camping with me, but lives in my kitchen.
I agree that a 20-degree angle on the hone would be a better idea, but I've learned to deal with it, as have you.
A lot of folks don't know this (I didn't for a while), but the ceramic rod also comes out for cleaning. There's a little stainless pin next to the knob. Use a small rod; the micro driver on a Wave,. for example, to push the pin through, and pull out the rod. I usually stow the pin under one of the diamond plates.

I'm a recent subscriber here having only found your channel a week or so ago. I didn't come across this video because of that though, I was actually looking at this on Amazon and some of the reviews said to "check out videos on RUclips" (one of those head slapping "Duh!" moments, LOL), so I did a search on this sharpener, this was the 1st video in the list that RUclips popped up (I'm glad BTW :) ).
My question is, this was 4 years ago, what are your thoughts on it now?
I wanted to mention, I don't just randomly subscribe to channels because there's a video or 2 that I like. While I really do/did enjoy your channel before I discovered your faith, it was your faith plus the content that made me click "Subscribe". The content that I've seen so far (including this video) plus the encouragement of another's faith that you share in your channel that let me know I wanted to :)
Anyways, wishing you and yours a very blessed holiday season and a merry Christmas!

OK, I have the guided system and I really love it, so I am thinking, should I buy this? Boom, yes! Great for a quick and super sharp edge, fits easily into small places but still big enough to be a useful tool, has all the components you need in a small package. Sure, if I am going to sharpen a bunch of knives, I will pull out the Work Sharp Guided system, but for everyday quick edge and touch up, this rocks! Thanks GT, keep up the great work!!

The more I use mine the better I like it, I especially like the ceramic rod it cleans up my blades very nicely. This is an essential piece of gear for me. I have one in my pack and another on my desk. I would recommend having a larger strap along with the sharpener because the one that comes on it is too narrow to do much, and tears up pretty quickly.

  • @TylerLL2112

I will say, I own a wicked edge system but, I just picked this up and I really like it. I mean, I wish it was a bit finer than 20 degrees but, that puts a great work edge that will be durable. My wicked edge will be my go to on my expensive blades but, I love this for a quick job on my cheaper blades. It gives a fantastic edge if you do your part. Great working edge not a mirror, but shaving sharp with a little bite for digging in. So far I've only used it on S-30v and AUS8 I wouldn't want to do my harder S-30v or D2 or anything like that but, it would do it if it was all you had. I freaking love this little sharpener.

Nice idea, but those angle guides close off the sharpening area in a weird way. I have a Smith's 2-sided diamond handheld sharpener and while it doesn't have angle guides--which I wouldn't bother with anyway--it does provide a better handle in the form of a cover that slips over the stones when you're done. I just glued a small piece of ceramic and a strip of leather with some polishing paste for finer honing of the edge. For larger blades, I generally take the stone to the edge rather than the edge to the stone. More like you'd do with a file on a machete. Oh well. Whatever works for you.

Awesome sharpener. Have two. One in my edc and one in my bowhunting pack. Fish hook sharpener seemed worthless at first (to me) but it's actually excellent for sharpening the point of your knife. Just watch the rod rotation easy to slip off and poke yourself. Carmex keeps the strop in good condition and I use a little metal polish compound on my strop. Surgically sharp :)

Aaron, figured I would weigh in on a few questions you had in this video.
    1) At the 5:15 mark you speak about cleaning the ceramic rods with powdered cleanser (like comet). While this is certainly my preferred method for cleaning my ceramic stones, I'm not so sure I would advise doing that on this sharpener due to the fact that you wouldn't want to get the leather strop wet or get comet worked into the leather strop either. So I would probably avoid getting the whole sharpener wet other than the diamond stones (which can be removed and cleaned separately). For the ceramic rods, I think you're probably better off just simply wiping them off with a damp cloth or paper towel and calling it a day. It would have been nice if Worksharp could have designed the ceramic rods to also detach from the sharpener as well. Then you could certainly give them a proper cleaning with some comet cleanser and a nylon toothbrush or scouring pad.
    2) At the 6:30 mark you demonstrated sharpening a 10" blade (junglas) on the sharpener which looked a bit sketchy doing it the way you were demonstrating. My tip would be to rest the blade against the 20 degree angle guide (if you need it), then move the blade in small, controlled circular motions. Slowly work your way along the blade until you've raised a burr along the entire edge, then flip the blade over and repeat on the opposite side. If the blade is so long or so big that it's awkward, then take the sharpener to the blade and move the sharpener in small, controlled circles and keep the blade stationary.
Using circular motions is also a much faster way of sharpening than simply pushing the blade across the stone. Using circular motions also allows you to hold and maintain a consistent angle without the need to constantly pick the blade up, find your angle again, and reset it at the end of the stone for your next stroke.
    3) At the 6:40 mark you mentioned that you were not sure why the ceramic guides were set to 25 degree angles instead of 20 like the other sides. This is most likely because worksharp understood that ceramics are really only intended as finishing stones for burr removal and by raising the angle by 5 degrees, you create a micro bevel which does a few things: adding a micro bevel adds strength to the cutting edge to reduce rolling and chipping. It also removes the burr created by the 20 degree sharpening angle more quickly due to the 5 degree increased angle. Being a "field sharpener" they want it to work quickly so the user doesn't have to spend a ton of time tuning up his equipment in the field.

I own a myriad of sharpeners, including this small backpackable "Worksharp Model WGSGFS221 and I have to admit ....It's the SCHIZNICK!
Also, I certainly agree with most of your post but to touch on your first point, I have discovered that one can actually REMOVE the "large" ceramic rod for cleaning by merely pressing out the small detent type pin that holds the red knob in place...( the one that's marked with the different coarseness settings).
It just pulls right out. To reinstall, one just has to fully seat the rod back in and then align the slots (cutouts) in the red knob while pushing the small pin back in place.

I watched several videos of different knife sharpeners including this one. It was the key to my decision to order one.I am not very good at sharpening freehand and I think the angle guides will help. I watched your video on the EZE folding sharpener and your reference to this sharpener turned the tide. I will also incorporate the woven lanyard idea suggested by another viewer. My favorite knife, a Kershaw 1620, has an oddly curved blade. Can I sharpen it on the Diamond flats or should I use the 3 way ceramic tool? Thank you for the fine video.

    Hey. Thenks for video.
I just got one of these and it seems really good.
Question: the leather stropp is green, not smoot, and transfering bits of this green particles to either knife or my hand. Is this normal because of its brand new or defect on this particular tool ?
Should i bring it back to store ??

May I ask you? Why are on D.plates 20° degrees and on ceramic rods are 25° degrees?
Nice video, I´m thinking about this field sharpener.

Is it possible to sharpen curved blades with it? Blades like the Ontario sp53 and the Buck Paklite skinner 140?Great reviews, thanks a lot for all your effort. And say hello to Tommy.

Sorry for the late reply but absolutely! It’s fantastic for touching up blades. I mostly carry smaller folders like the para 3 which I sharpen when it gets a bit dull. I suggest not using it when your knife is completely dull but it’s great for touching up blades

Diamond coarse; than diamond smooth, than ceramic, than strop.

In video you’re actually pushing blade, I have this field sharpener and use a pulling/dragging motion and create small burr and then use ceramic and strop to get shaving sharp edge. Dr David

Nice review. But all you need to do is rub your hand along the leather to keep a bit of oil on it. Your hands have just enough oil on them to keep them from drying up & cracking. Learned this from a guy who strops with high end leather for straight edge razors. No need to put oil or paste on it unless you want to polish even more. I also do not understand why put 20 degree angle then a 25 degree angle. I personally would rather see a 17 degree angle for my fishing fillet knives.

It looks really hard to hold comfortably, as you point out, the thumb grip is way too short. Although possible, as you show, they're too small for bigger knives.I think I'll stick with my 6 x 2" diamond stones.

You’re supposed to stop the tip in the middle of the stone not slide it all the way off you’re going to round your tip that way

Note that the leather strop comes oil infused. So maybe don't oil the leather until it's seen some use first.

Daniel G some of the ones you order from Amazon have been sitting there for a looong time. Mine actually came with some green mold on it if I'm not mistaken. Oiled it up with some olive oil :D

Keep in mind that the actual bevel angle will be not 20 but 23 degrees or more, depending on the cross-section of your blade.

    • @sadfur8728
      @sadfur8728 Год назад

The actual angle will probably be more dependent on the person doing the sharpening than the guideline ramps at the ends, since it's not maintained at any particular angle other than the hand holding it. Holding it freely in the air while sharpening will most likely vary a great deal from any single angle throughout the stroke.
