Moondrop is famous for their headphones (and their waifus), but now they're dipping their toes in the competitive mobile phone market with the new Moondrop MIAD01. With budget specs and a great port selection, has Moondrop hit it out of the park on their first try or is the biggest draw to the phone the cute girl on the box?

As per Rossman, do not buy LG tvs. They steal and sell your data by default.
Man I love what Louis Rossman has to say about LG’s data harvesting
this is a bit commendable because this the first audiophile portable that is finally a smartphone whereas existing similar products pretend it can't be a smartphone e.g. no modem and cameras. however, this exposes the awkwardness of high end audio industry, it has been good enough for a decade or two already-the average music listener these days just want convenience like lossy music formats and wireless speakers

This. I genuinely cannot fathom why this is such a trend. Lay your phone on your desk, and it wobbles when you breathe. Also, a set of shoulder buttons as a standard. It could genuinely make so many things on a phone beyond just games.

you're not going to hear a difference in balanced output unless you're using really hard to drive headphones that are distorting at high gain on the non-balanced connection.
it just adds like 3db of gain and makes it cleaner, but you wont hear those noises in the first place with 99% of headphones
Yeah, I think he and his team kinda missed the point of the feature. IEMs are not the point and while I get he’s not in the market for a portable DAC for hard to drive over ears….well there’s enough demand that portable DACs are its own product segment lol
Yeah, balanced is really just useful for hard to drive headphones.
@@aj0413_ the sad part is that the reason why LTT labs started, was because they needed better instrumentation to test headphones ... Then did nothing with it.
Yeah the review was trash. He just said what's in the script with little testing
My headphones sound different on the two ports. They come to life on the 4.4. I notice a whole new depth to the audio and it is not about loudness.
The part about Linus not really noticing a difference about balanced output or (4.4mm) at 9:30 is because Balanced output usually only provides more power (volume), The audio quality should be equal given the amplifier isn't designed in a way where the single ended or (3.5mm) output is poorly integrated and has a significant measurable difference.
Doesn't balanced reduce crosstalk since it doesn't have a common ground?
@@pixels_per_inch Hello good question, balanced connections are useful for applications where you want the least amount of noise or distortion possible (this includes cross talk), such as a microphone. Or connecting a dac, to an amplifier. However in headphones these benefits won’t be noticeable, either due to the length of the wire, or well the distortion of headphone being much more than the electronics. To put it simply most of the benefits of balanced won’t be humanly audible on headphones, if your amplifier chain on single ended is already past the human threshold. Which nowadays even an apple dongle can surpass. The main benefit of balanced connections is differential, which allows an amplifier to provide much more power to a headphone making it subjectively sound better to most people.
Balanced outputs are usually for longer cable runs not the short cable like on most earphones. Longer cable runs between your DAC and powered studio monitors.
balanced provides better RF noise rejection, thats the one benefit (and why your network cables are balanced), and you arent gonna hear it on a 3 foot cable.
You'd think they'd would throw in a pair of buds because... They're known for their audio and it'd be a throwback to when that was the bare minimum and stand out from the crowd.
Moondrop is primarily an iem and headphone company, so they’re main demographic are the kind to pick and choose their own buds
Checked moondroplab and the buds are only 20-40$ ish
with IEMs starting at 90$ -> 900$
So they certainly could
Im sure they could toss in a pair of Chu 2's and everyone would be happy~
Its a phone for audio nerds, the people who would buy this most likely already have expensive iems or even open back headphones.
@@stephen1r2 They have buds at well over $300 aswell.
In other words they do all price ranges and what you are saying isn't entirely accurate especially because their cheapest iems are a mere $20

LG being a sponsor on an unboxing of a music centric phone with a headphone jack hurts my heart.
Linus saying he can't carry a c to 3.5 dongle like he couldn't just leave the little dongle on the end of the headphones making me think he hasn't really tried it
you can't
you have to charge the phone
so the constant insertion and removal makes it a pain to keep track of and is definitely something that made me seek another solution
he would benefit greatly from something like a Fiio BTR5, little DAC that works over a wire (acting like a USBC to 3.5mm adapter) as well as over bluetooth, meaning he can use his high quality IEMs as bluetooth buds for on the go
@@calxshaw06 No keep the dongle on the end of the headphone cable so its like its part of the cable itself
@@calxshaw06 They make adapters that also have a USC C input on the cable itself so you can charge and use aux at the same time. I keep a regular C>Aux cable in my wallet so it's always on me

@@liamdstein I've lost two of them doing that. At home it totally isn't an issue but on the go... well, I use BT buds.
Their sponsor for this video, LG has an option in their TV's called "Do Not Sell My Personal Information". By default this option is not enabled.
This means by default this their TV's will sell your data.
Like every product and service you use ever.
Compared to others the only difference I see is LG being honest about it, while others have that exact same thing but don't explicitly say "sale" and they use other terms.
Does this exist in LG monitors?
Balanced *literally* sounds the same. It's for effectively driving higher impedance headphones, usually on lower power devices. If you're using a dedicated DAC then a balanced port is probably moot anyway. It's more for peace of mind that power delivery/impedance is not the bottleneck in your system.
Balanced is like 50% actually does a thing, 50% snake oil.
Except it doesn’t on this device. Because 3.5 jack standard is different in North America than in rest of the world, they have to add an additional chip to handle that, that means more distortion of signal.
@@donaldlee8249 Can you please elaborate what you mean by the 3.5 jack standard is different? I have international devices that seem no different with regards to 3.5mm headphone compatibility vs North American devices...
(the sort of devices I'm talking about range from phones to retro Nintendo handhelds)
@@nintendomaniac64 you see the two rings on your 3.5 jack? That’s for separating left and right channel, and North America standards is the reverse of international standards, and most non hifi devices have a chip to detect left and right and make adjustments accordingly, that includes your Nintendo
I think Moondrop is targeting this as a DAP that has 5G, and is assuming you will use it in concert with a more capable phone
balanced outputs increase the output by 3dB and reduce the distortion.
If you can play it loud enough with unbalanced without any audible distortion you'll get nothing by switching to balanced, so no surprise that Linus can't hear any difference...
Okay I spent like hours a while ago trying to find a simple explanation for balanced outputs, and you're the second person I've seen who has said this. Do you recall where you learned this? Feel like I'm missing out! Lol
@@Enixious99 I fully understood it after looking at the way a balanced Dac is build. (In my Case the Fiio BTR5 / ESS ES9219C ) You can find it on the spec sheets.
AudioScienceReview is also a good source.
Tldr: you have 2x the same DAC side by side and you add up the Signal
-> +3dB
-> each Dac has to run lower to reach the same output as a single unbalanced
-> lower distortion for same listening level
@@plompudu2529 ahhhh I see, I will check them out! Thanks!
I think what would have been better to do is partner with an actual phone manufacturer, take their best phone and then make it audiophile capable like making an S24 Ultra with a 4.4mm headphone jack. Cause this is a product I'd love to have if the actual phone aspect was good as well. I carry around both my S22 Ultra and FiiO M11 Plus and it does get annoying carrying both.

3:30 How to tell if someone watches anime or not in less than 5 seconds
I cringed so hard.
The balanced 4.4 connector only provides more power (at your preferred volume level) and less electromagnetic interference. If the headphones or IEMs are not tough to drive (require lots of power) and you're not having problems with EM interference, you won't notice a difference between using 3.5 and 4.4 connections.
Thats why the DSP is so great with this IEM, you just plug it in to any phone and have outstanding audio performance
What's the IEM Linus was using?

really sad that sony disabled the option to switch the back button to the right instead of left (which is supposed to be a stock android feature, so sony must have explicitly disabled it). AFAIK this is the biggest reason why linus does not switch to an xperia phone.
And the they're very expensive but they also have card slots last time I checked so that's a definite positive.
So, while I think the phone is not a very good product, what Linus failed to sell (or hear/understand) is that Moondrop isn't selling just "a phone with a 3.5 jack", they're selling a phone with an actually good dac/amp combo. You might not care if you use regular IEMs or basic dirty buds but for the people who have hard to drive headphones or picky IEMs? That is, to my knowledge quite literally, never seen before.
