  • Hi guys! How are you doing?
Spring is finally here and I feel super inspired by the sun, the birds, the foxes that pop up at the back of my building and, of course, the flowers!
This month I really spoiled myself and got a bunch of handmade watercolour paints from different small businesses, so I'm super excited to share them with you.
In today's video I'll be swatching Arkaar Creation, a lovely brand of handmade watercolours and hardbound sketchbooks made in India. The colours are super rich, textured and feel really nice to paint with.
Have you tried their paints? Let me know in the comments :)

When you said "from India" I suddenly thought of Blue Pine Arts. That was a company run by a woman named Trupti. And then I realized I hadn't gotten one of their emails in months. I guess she rebranded and moved back to India? Either way she makes great watercolors! Edit: Nevermind! I looked it up and Trupti from Blue Pine Arts is still doing Blue Pine Arts. There are two Truptis from India that have handmade watercolor businesses!

That’s funny, but I remember indeed some confusion with the name also in one of Natasha Newton’s videos, so you aren’t the first to think that 😄

I'm not a fan of handmade watercolours myself, they are just too heavy and opaque, but I love watching some nice swatching 😁😍

I think it depends more on the pigments themselves than being handmade, many earthy colours like those PR101 I swatched can be very opaque even in commercial paints. What I find interesting with handmade is that you can get some very unusual mineral or natural pigments otherwise hard to find. I’ll be sharing swatches of those soon, so keep tuned 🙂 and thank you for commenting, I appreciate you like the swatch sesh!

@@coloredcarol8074 in that case it's more about how finely the pigment has been grounded. Of course pigments impact the opacity but compared to the same pigments, the handmade watercolours generally sit heavier and more opaque. It's just quite difficult for people at home or in small businesses who mill by hand to achieve the same results as machines in bigger companies. It's a question of preference, some people like, others don't.
Even in big companies paints the size of pigment particle impacts a lot the final feeling of the paint. Schminke's Ultramarine Finest is the least granulating of the Ultramarine colours.

@@huskytail that interferes too, it’s true. It’s good to know your preferences in regards to materials, nowadays we are spoiled for choice so, there’s something for everyone.

Its very interesting to see how different they look when they dry vs when they're applied. Also, speaking as just a beginner here but I didn't know custom, hand-made watercolors were thing, let alone something that would be made in my country. Thanks for the interesting and informative video!

Thank you for your kind comment! Indeed, some colours have quite a colour shift from wet to dry. And if you ever get a chance I’d say try handmade, it’s definitely special.
