(Not promoting btw)
Rest of the gens other then gen 8 you do that yourself
Jaiden animation's "I attempted my 1st pokemon nuzlocke" or Alpharad's "can you beat pokemon emerald with only a mudkip"
The title of this video should have been "Competitive Pokemon Master Finally Learns About Broken Gen 1 Mechanics." We need Wolfey to play Gen 1.
And what types there are in the game.... And that there are no abilities
@@carthagegaming5545 THERE ARE NO ABILITIES? FOR REAL?
stormwolf3303 abilities were introduced gen 3
@@stealthy9156 it was a dark and confusing time. Quick attack was the only priority move, swift hit as a physical move and dragon rage was the only dragon move.
There was a video on ZeRo's channel where they played each other in every gen on Showdown, and Wolfey wasn't familiar with a lot of gen 1 stuff.
wolfey: good thing sturdy isn't the same as new sturdy
Gen 1: *doesn't have abilities*
wolfey: :O
wolfey: I feel like water is special in this game
Gen 1: no physical/special split
wolfey: :O
@@cc4938 the no physical special split is what he was referring to, as in all water attacks are special, while after the physical special split certain moves are physcial or special even if they are the same type. Thats why in gens 1-3 hyper beam is physical.
"Caterpie is a nightmare? Oh right, Poison Point!"
Damn those caterpies and that big ass poisonous stinger on their head!
@@cc4938There was a physical special split. What there wasn't was a split between special attack and special defense. That's why Gen I's special stat is broken as hell.
The double take at "And nobody ever tried to be good at them" coming from the Pokémon World Champion is one hell of a priceless reaction oh my lord HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA
"the more times we roll the dice, the more likely it is to come up tails."
Despacito87 You must not own the Sonic and Tails dice.
ah yes the negotiator
I finally found someone who appreciates that line.
I love that line
Took me a sec to get it lmao
Wolfey: Jokingly insulted when implied he isn't good at RBY.
Also Wolfey: Thinks abilities are in gen 1, and legitimately believed ghost type didn't exist in gen 1.
Wolfey probably thought he meant Pokemon in general and not specifically RBY (which he hasn't even played)
Ghost practically didn't exist in gen 1 to be fair, only Gengar's line were ghost
Akuro and psychic was immune to ghost and the only ghost moves were lick and night shade which were both abysmal trash
my favorite was 'poison point' which not only doesnt exist in this game, but is never associated with caterpie in later games anyway
i know im late to this but to be fair there is a pokemon in gen 1 that does have an ability, its just hard to encounter, paras has the chance to have the dry skin ability, i dont know if it has dry skin and nothing or just dry skin but i distinctly remember paras in gen 1 (and when i gen 1 i do mean rbgy and not frlg) being immune to water moves and healing off them when id start with squirtle when id encounter them in mt moon, and paras has a low encounter rate in there compared tot the likes of zubat and geodude. i guess not many people know about it due to the fact that squirtle is the only pokemon you can get before mt moon that can learn a water move under normal circumstances but also not many people encountering paras while having said squirtle or people not going back to mt moon (cause no one needs to due to diglett tunnel, cut, and fly) after getting a pokemon later on that has surf or other water moves. well i guess the other way would be to do the more insane route of getting raticate before mt moon and teaching it water gun from the tm inside mt moon but thats the only other way i can thnk of. sorry for the rant
I love how just a few minutes in Wolfey talks about abilities TWICE without realizing that they didn't even exist until gen 3.
Wolfey has become my favourite reaction channel

..... "Good thing old sturdy isnt new sturdy" bruh this is gen one there were no abilities
Really-Old Sturdy was just no-Sturdy at all!
Not true. Every Pokemon had the ability to nerf their own crit ratio with Focus Energy. That's not what the move's supposed to do, so it HAS to be an ability, right?
Right after mentioning Poison Point, too. Poor Wolfe.
what was the old sturdy about?
@@SwordBlaze gen 3 and 4 sturdy made a mon immune to OHKO moves
You should react to one of Pikasprey's videos. He was the guy who played the rival and he has done a ditto only run as well as a series called soft lock picking where he tries to get out of softlocks created by the comments
1000 % Agreed. That man is a Legend
His six smeargle play through of crystal is one of my favourite series
@@AMindfulGamer One of the best series on RUclips. The best part was his dissapointment everytime when he saw Jabadamazo

Jrose videos would also be good
The immediate pain when she said that no one has tried to be good at Pokémon!!! It was great.
Lol, yeah. Poor Wolfey.
Prior to the Physical/Special split, the types that were Special were Dragon, Water, Electric, Fire, Dark, Psychic, Grass and Ice. All other types were Physical. An easy way to remember is while Eevee is Physical, all of Eevee's evolutions (and Dragon) are Special.
Flygon with a nice attack stat but only special moves was the bane of my existence
I still think it's stupid that ghost is physical, but considering the only attacking ghost move in gen 1 is lick, who cares right?
You joined youtube in 2006 wow this site is old
@@adrianogoulartcarvalho7144 Well, it lasted from gen 1 to gen 3 included.
@@ant-onemusic444 Ground was a physical type in Gen 3, and Flygon had access to Earthquake, no? Also, its base Sp. Atk stat was still respectable, being only 20 points lower than its base Atk stat.

@Descartes' Apparition bro I'm gay too
For you
10:00 Yes, Wolfe, this is before physical/special split. Back then, move type governed whether a move was physical or special, for example, all water moves are special, all normal moves are physical, all fire moves are special, all poison moves are physical. This is also before special/special split, where one stat "special" governed both special attack and special defense. Which is why amnesia Snorlax was such a huge threat, and Alakazam would seem especially bulky against most Pokemon. I spent so much time with Pokemon Red back in the day, that I still get confused sometimes when Alakazam is one shot or in a bad tier.

Wolfey: Cries
The wolfe pack needs Wolfe to do a run like this and make it into a wideo
This is too intense
Fun fact: That 'X Accuracy = Always hits" was in both Gen I and Gen II. And in Gen 1, level difference wasn't a factor for OHKO moves, only Speed (if your Pokemon was slower, it would fail, hence the X Speeds - it wasn't just to ensure he'd go first, it was so the move wouldn't fail outright).
12:55
I laughed here because you mentioned the ability "Sturdy". We didn't even have "Old Sturdy" in Gen 1. Abilities weren't added until Gen 3.
Wolfey learning just how broken Gen 1 is fills me with joy.
Thanks for doing our reccomendations, it really makes us feel engaged in the community :)
:3
"Yet no one has ever tried to be good at them."
It's super effective!
Wolfe was confused!
His reaction to every gen 1 exploit/glitch was priceless.
"Good thing it's old sturdy"
Abilities were first introduced in gen 3. Just thought I'd let you know.
The things that made Gen 1 so fun to play, when I was that young, was that the encounter rate for wild pokemon was much lower than any other generation--which made it harder to catch rare pokemon; and the accuracy glitch, which yes, did make the game less predictable; and the huge amount of glitches.
Growing up in the 90s was cool because of all those glitches. There were so many urban legends about Pokemon Red and Blue that you couldn't check because there was no Bulbapedia. You had to play to find out what was true. I never had the same experience as when I played my first Pokemon game.
“Good thing sturdy is the old sturdy and not new sturdy.” Ohhh Wolfey, thank you for warning me that you never played gen 1 games lol:P
Wolfe learning about Gen 1 Miss Chance is painful.
EDIT: Ceave Gaming is a channel that does a ton of Super Mario challenge runs, all with explanation videos on how to achieve them. This pokemon team is effectively the Challenge Run All-Stars. Beautiful.

I found her the day her first super Mario video dropped, and since then she became one of my top 5 channels. Especially after u found out she was also trans.

Yeah gen 1 is broken dude. Like literally so many glitches/exploits. My favorite is the badge boost glitch which raises all yous stats when any stat is modified, so that tail whip is actually raising all your stats instead lol.
Gen 1's brokenness is the gift that keeps on giving.
If you wanna do more reaction wideos, Pikasprey I think kinda started the whole "Can you beat x with weak Pokemon y" thing with Ditto in RBY and GSC, and he also did Slakoth in FRLG. Those wideos are very good imo, well worth a watch. (Pikasprey has 2 channels, the Blue one for Lets Plays and the Yellow channel for this sort of challenge run)

I absolutely love the couple minutes of troubleshooting. I feel like it just adds something that you don't get with other UTubers. Thanks Wolfey
The outro. The intro. “Doing it live”. This is the most professional wideo maker ever on the whole interwebs
Love the videos you’ve been making recently. I would also love to see you reacting to some of Pikasprey’s softlocke scenarios. Especially the Lorlei one
TIL Wolfe never learned how broken Gen 1 was
*imagine if he found out how broken Amnesia was in competitive battling*
Loving this series. I have personally watched all the videos he's reacting to when they came out, but I've been really excited to watch them.again with his extra commentary
There will never be a Tuber in all of RUclips with better intros and outros, simply the best quality iv ever seen. Loving these videos. I would still love to see you try such a challenge yourself sometime, maybe not one as time consuming as these past 2 but I would love to see how you would strategically tackle some form of challenge run.
I would 100% recommend checkkng out Pikasprey's Softlock series. It is wacky as heck and offers interesting insight on the programming of Pokémon games (the "Gen 1 AI trainers don't need to worrh about PP" is a thing Asprey covers in the very first Softlock episode).
“Good thing Sturdy is ‘Old Sturdy’ and not ‘New Sturdy’”
Buddy, abilities weren’t even twinkles in the devs’ eyes back then.
I love how he has the same reaction every time he sees water gun being a tm
Wolfey watching till the end letting the boys plug their channels is a good example of why I love the content.
I would love to see wolf reacting to a speedrun and/or wolf teaching a speedrunner how to VGC.
The Wally shiny
P sure what they meant by "tried to be good" is a joke off of the classic "just get good and don't get hit" advice.
I like to believe that Wolfey accidentally talking to chat is something he does in normal life as well as when he’s recording
Yes! Would love to see a reaction to Alpharad's Mudkip only run, he makes some very big brain plays that he absolutely spent so much time on, and I think you can appreciate some of his moves
If you like these "Can you"/"What if" scenarios, I highly recommend watching Pikasprey's videos for more things to react to, especially his soft-locking and one-pokemon videos.
I'd recommend watching some of Asprey's videos, too. Like his videos of playing through Red/Blue and Crystal with only a single Ditto, or Fire Red/Leaf Green with a Slakoth. Or his Soft Lock Picking series, in which he abuses the mechanics of the games to create situations that are impossible or nearly impossible to espace from.
Love your wideos. I only recently found out about you just before lockdown where I am and these wideos have been uplifting :)
i love how wolfey is such a great competitive pokemon player but didnt know that abilities didnt exist in gen 1 or the broken x items

Only channel I know where you finish setting up while making the video. I love this guy
It’s so cute watching him think pokemon had abilities like “sturdy” back in Gen 1. That and the 256 glitch and him asking about the special split.... gen 1 was a wild era
When you’ve been tubing in a river for 4 hours and you know wolfey uploads at 4 (my time) so you check your phone for a wideo so you can see the intro and enjoy your day and get seen by wolfey because he is a youtubist that reads the comments... so how is Beating SwoShi without taking damage going?

That run isn't possible. Hop's Wooloo can't be OHKO'd by any of the starters (even with a Crit) and only knows Tackle which has 100% accuracy.

I got Pokemon Blue in Christmas of '98 when I was 10. That was the perfect age, not because of the worldwide phenomenon it was at the time, but because I was too young to realize how broken it was. It's the Japanese we should feel sorry for: Swift (at the time, the only "always hits" move) was treated as a 100% accuracy move in the JP versions, meaning even it could miss. I've always liked a more casual approach by RUclipsrs BTW.
I love how he just does everything without editing or starting over
Before even clicking on this video, I was really excited for your reaction to the "And yet, not once has anybody ever actually tried to be good at them" line

I love how Wolfey says "Escusi" instead of "Scusi" (which means "excuse me" in italian, idk where he learnt that, maybe from Pardini)
This was also before special def and special atk were made two stats. Before they were both just the special stat so the stat block posted early in the video is wrong.
Yeah, 50 base special for Raticate in Gen 1
Wolfey has transitioned from vgc analysis wideos to tier lists to reaction wideos and I’m not disappointed with the result
"I've never played like original gen 1" Oooooh boy, he has to do it. Someone please coerce this man to do a blind gen 1 run of either red or blue... It would be so fun to see him acknowledge the broken mechanics of these games
Does anyone else really appreciate how natural Wolfey is. No super edited videos, just pure Wolfe all the time.
I feel very listened to. Thanks wolf!! You're great.
Bro, I swear I almost bust a gut this. Very funny video, keep up the great work!
Wait did he only now found out about how broken x accurasys in the first games are
Back in Gen 1 alot of flying type moves were actually normal types.
fighting types too, like karate chop
I think it was just Gust and Karate Chop (Bite was Normal, and Dark wasn't a thing yet). Karate Chop is quite odd, but I'm pretty sure the reason why Gust was Normal (and why Razor Wind is still Normal, frankly) is because the Flying-type was was most likely a replacement to the cut Bird-type (it's never actually been confirmed, but Bird is glitch type in Gen 1). This would explain why every Flying-move in Gen 1 is somewhat related to birds, maybe even why Dodrio is Flying-type at all. Most likely, Game Freak realized that Flying is a much more interesting type than Bird, and all the Bird-type moves got changed to Flying. At the time, wind moves weren't seen as standard attacks, akin to many sound-based moves, so they weren't given the Flying or Bird-type
I find your casual wideo style refreshing, and live would be cool too. Thanks
