  • We have planted over 100 fruit trees and even more berry bushes to turn this 1 acre property in east Tennessee into a wild type orchard known as a food forest. the berries I'm eating in this video are the "infamous" deliciously invasive autumn olive berries

I have a lot of things I been wanting to say over the past couple years and we have some big news in the next few weeks coming so plenty of walk and talk videos coming soon.

    LOL....and no more audio....but I get it, words aren't necessary here, just all us viewers have to look and see, as you guide us through your garden.....no wait I correct myself JUNGLE!!!! Wow, and watching ya taste those autumn olive berries, so bright red and pretty, but how SOUR, the puckered face you made, but me liking sour, knew I was missing out on such a yummy and FREE fruit! Wait a second this video wasn't completely without audio, after the second berry munchin' you let out a small, almost inaudible "whoo!" Thank you for sharing buddy, liked and wishing ya a great week in your beautiful JUNGLE! :D

    Hah I'm gonna feel the same way my open acre lot I just got went from empty last season to probably 40+ fruit trees and tons of different berry bushes to just about anything edible I have in the ground now all growing up at once to change the landscape

    • @athatcher85
      @athatcher85  2 года назад

      That's excellent. I'm glad you have an edible jungle too and one that is starting to take shape. That's great. The best stuff I planted I dug up from roadside and in the country along ditches, wild berries, wild fruit trees, and baby fruit trees growing under old fruits on abandoned farms. They increase the diversity and are tougher than store bought or online plants

      I just wanted to chill and walk, and have you hear all the birds and crickets and cicadas and see all the fruit trees and berry bushes. I usually don't know when to shut up and talk through a whole video non stop. I'm going to have a lot to say and talk about in my next couple videos that are going to be really impprtant. Was just nice to chill in the food forest. Welcome and thanks for tuning in

    I'm in East Tn as well so I'd love to know what specific types of trees and berries have done well for you here and taste best. Especially which types of peaches, apples and plums. And blueberries. But all of them really. 😂. I thought you were supposed to harvest autumn olives after the first killing frost? Maybe they'd be sweeter then? I don't have any around me so I haven't tried them yet, just read about them. Beautiful property!

    • @athatcher85
      @athatcher85  2 года назад +1

      The stuff that has done the best and having died or been out competed, are all the native or wild types, wild plum, wild black raspbery, wild blackberry, autumn olive, wild citrus, and anything grown from seed, peach seedlings, apple seedlings, etc. Do not plant store bought plums, only wild or native plums, cherries are ok. Have had success with nanking cherry, black cherry, montmorency cherry and dwarf north star. Hazelnuts too by they start slow, like pawpaws, they are slow

    Good to see a video from you again! Have any tips for planting an area of the same scale economically? I know that buy-what-you-can-when-you-can is surely being better than nothing, but it's sometimes quite challenging to source a diverse set of stock to plant out..

    • @athatcher85
      @athatcher85  2 года назад +3

      I dig a lot of stuff up from friends property and also along roadside in the country or when I know it's county land. Also under powerlines too. I always keep an eye out for things flowering while I'm driving on country roads etc. A mental marker and dig them up in the fall or winter when they are dormant. That's for getting new varieties, stuff you already have usually propagates on it's own, like berries spreading through roots and also when tips touch the ground. Old fruit trees on abandoned farms usually have babies underneath. The old time varieties will do the best in your area compared to store bought or online. Native trees and wild or invasive fruits are where it's at. Wild plums, wild cherries, wild berries and nuts. The best trees and berry bushes I have here, i went shopping guerilla style 😉

    How's your hardy citrus doing

    • @athatcher85
      @athatcher85  2 года назад +1

      It's doing good. I have a bunch of wild citrus that are as tall or taller than me. Had a late frost this year that killed all the baby fruit on all the trees this spring and the wild citrus had already started putting out baby leaves and branches and all the new green tips turned brown and died after that frost. But They are tough as nails and came back soon after. I had peach trees with almost probably 1000 baby peaches on it and lost them all. It's frustrating but that's life, your at the mercy of things you can't always control. Good to see you here buddy. Hope all is well

    Hey buddy. I own 3.2 acres in East Tennessee, and am looking to do a similar thing to what you are doing with my land. I'm trying to identify some of the wild edibles first. If you know where I can find someone to teach me about these, I would appreciate the passing on of that information. Also, I was wondering if you have developed a plant nursery for some of the trees, shrubs, and other perennials on your homestead. I'm looking to buy several plants. I'm also interested in Cherokee pumpkin seeds. Do you have an email address where I can contact you?
