Right on. Anyone can sing with all of the synthesizers and technology today. A lot of “artists” lip-synch at concerts, because “they dance a lot.” Lame excuse. Pat Benetar’s voice still gives me chills, and I’ve loved her since I was about 6-7.
Anyone who sings knows how difficult it is to sing this forcefully, and still sound great. Vocally, this is one of the most powerful pop/rock songs ever recorded. You have to see her live in concert to appreciate how strong her voice really is.
her range, timbre, modulation and projection are amazing... it's a hard song to sing well. I like how the verses are in her sultry lower register, then she can just jump so effortlessly up an octave on the choruses. Underrated 80's vocalist...and so tiny and cute back then! Had a big crush as a kid ugh! 😍🎤🎼👍
February 1981. San Diego Sports Arena. My very first ever rock concert. Pat Benatar. She opened with No You Don't and closed with My Clone Sleeps Alone on the third encore. The arena lights came on and the audience refused to leave. From in the back a chant started:"We want Pat!!". In minutes 20,000 people were making this chant. 10 minutes later Pat and her band came back on stage. "Thank you for calling us back to the stage. I don't know any more songs." The only time I saw something like that.
Neil Giraldo has got to be one of the luckiest men alive. He gets to make and perform amazing music with the woman he loves, who happens to be one of the best female singers ever... who is also an amazing person, AND incredibly beautiful, AND seems to be very nearly immune to aging. They must have a truly wonderful life.
This is one of those classic Rock songs that contains a purely epic phrase in its lyrics - and it almost slips by unnoticed: "You can talk tough, baby - that's alright. You can let me down easy but - not tonight!"

Pat trained for awhile to sing opera when young, and I believe her mom sang some opera. Unlike many pop, rock and country stars, Pat can ACTUALLY SING! She sings pushing air up from her diaphragm, has a relaxed throat and resonates like crazy above the neck - sings through her head. That is why she gets such volume, has excellent range and can comfortably sustain notes. She can still do it very well today! Definitely one of the best rock singers, ever. Not in Rock and Roll Hall of Shame!!!
Yes, she was classically trained for opera and has a five octave vocal range. I went to a Benatar Giraldo concert at Paramount Theater in Denver in 2001 or so. She and Neil walked up the aisle near my seat as they were playing this song.

It is amazing to me how effortlessly those notes come out of her. I have seen some powerful singers but it often looks like they have to struggle when they need the power. Pat looks so relaxed like her personal volume knob is only on 5 out of ten and she doesn't even need any more than that. its just all raw refined beautiful power.
Wow, this was amazing, superb performance. So real and epic. Goosebumps really. It is an utter travesty and shame that Pat Benatar, basically the Queen of the 80s, is not in the Hall of Fame. And I feel sad also for the 205 misguided souls who disliked this video.

What a powerful voice coming from such a tiny lady (5'0") - amazing. I've been a fan since the early 80's - saw her in Worcester, MA in 1981 while I was at WPI.
I'm still every bit in love with Pat Benatar as I was back in the eighties. This song (and several others) never fails to send those delicious chills down my spine. This performance is *SUPERB*! This is probably my favorite song by them, they really pulled this one off live w stunning authenticity of the recording that is, hard to do live w certain tracks. Pat is statuesque, stunningly and beautifully present, her voice sounds great, really her at her peak, what lucky guys her band was, oh gee , we got to go make music w this gorgeous soulful gal every night , we should all have such problems ha!
I was born in 90s and I have recently discovered how great the 80s were for music, especially female lead singers like Pat & many more, Im kinda sad/mad I wasnt alive to witness it, but I wonder why I don’t see a lot of people praising the voice of Marie fredrickson from Roxette though, I feel she was underrated and should have way more recognition, her voice is amazing to me, am I missing something ?
nope, your ear is good! I think ppl discount Marie bcoz of the popiness of Roxette. But good Lordy her vocal on "It Must Have Been Love" is agonizingly gorgeous...and such range!! 🎤💪👍 I listened to it every lonely night at my lonely job 15 years ago when a relation just...fell apart. Really hard time. 💔 Still don't listen to that song anymore. 😞
Saw Pat and many concerts at the old torn down New Haven Coliseum. It was always friggin hot in there w/no ventilation. system. Just a huge big square box shape which produced excellent sound. Best concert there? Guns & Roses Skin and Bones Tour 1993 9th row. Benatar was awesome though.
Wow, just wow! Pat can really let it rip and sound awesome while holding it together during certain parts of the song. Pat and Ann Wilson are 2 of the best female singers to ever hold a microphone!
Every once in awhile you hear this, you are reminded of it. Then it dawned on me that she was/is better than almost any singer ever. Not even my favorite music… But, I concede, she is amazing! They were better back then, they had to be. Even Diana Ross in her Central Park concert when it rained. Look it up and listen to what she said and watch what she did. Then ask yourself, if any singer today would do that? Or could? These performances were hands down the best human kind has to offer.

A couple of the unmistakeable female voices in rock history; Grace Slick, Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks. You hear them, you know who it is.
Don't forget Tina and Bonnie Tyler!

Karen Carpenter too
Nancy Wilson is unmistakable too...as is Patti Smith, Patty Smythe...etc.
even Madonna is unmistakable...unspectacular, but unmistakable nonetheless.
I'll even add Karen Carpenter to that list. Maybe not rock but they knew what they were doing

I listened to it every lonely night at my lonely job 15 years ago when a relation just...fell apart. Really hard time. 💔 Still don't listen to that song anymore. 😞
Little lady... HUGE powerful voice!
The way she puts grit in her voice just amazes me, greatest female singer ever… only if my female singer would actually appreciate older music
How can such a small woman in stature belt out such strong vocals?
Exactly, unbelievable
ugh 😍🥰🎤💪👍
had such a crush on her as a kid back then lol...still do I guess! 🥰😍😂🤭
Incredible. Nothing more, nothing less. Simply Incredible.
High Class American Rock n Roll.....Pat Benatar.....Grace and Beauty Personified.....
Saw Pat Benatar at Newcastle city hall in the eighties. She was terrific. Great singer.
This woman changed the rock’ n roll game forever! Her voice is so strong she is my 1 favorite rock queen
Wow, just wow! Pat can really let it rip and sound awesome while holding it together during certain parts of the song. Pat and Ann Wilson are 2 of the best female singers to ever hold a microphone!
80's MUSIC WAS FKNG AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pat is a ROCK LEGEND the QUEEN!
So true
i know i'm going to get flack but music died when Nirvana was born.
Can you imagine if you could have booked her for your senior prom in the 80's? That would have been.....awesome!
With No Disrespect to Aretha, she is The True QUEEN or Rock!!!
One of the greatest women in the history of rock music. Period. End of discussion.
why couldn't 80's music lasted forever? 90's killed music and it never really recovered.
David 90s music can touch the 80s music
hmm 90's music had a good run and had many high points...imo that's the last decade of good music...it went downhill quick after 2000.
The 90s was actually better than the 80s. Unless you only like pop music
Top 100 Songs Of All Time. Such a great powerful voice. Beautiful spirit and woman. Breathtaking.
Never another era of music like the 80's..Best fuck'in time of my life..
You're lucky as fuck.
Just saw her in concert two weeks ago. She is amazing!! I have loved her since the 80’s. Too bad she didn’t sing this song on this current tour.
Classically trained voice, beautiful woman, really good songs. Pat is one of the best female rockers of all time imhop
She's the best female rock singer of all-time. Even better than Ann Wilson.
+MoMoMyPup10 I wouldn't go that far. She is very good though. I put her 3rd behind Ann and Janis.
+TheJer1963 Janis blew!
To each their own.
+TheJer1963 Ann is DEFINITELY number one, but I would put Pat as a runner up.
John Jones
I can agree with that.
Hugely under appreciated rock and roll Queen... an unbelievably gifted performer.
She was awesome before social media, and she could sing!
