Alias Basics: My Alias Workflow

- Here is a quick look into my Alias workflow. It is definitely for the more advanced user.
I am also testing a looser, more lecture sort of style, just sort of talking through my process and explaining some of my steps. I know I tend to get lost in space but that's how I work. I think theirs certain value to just watching me work vs me recording step by step tutorials. Feel free to let me know what you guys think in the comments. I don't take any offense to any criticism.

How to became designer
School is the best first step :) second one is an internship and third one first smal jobs on diferent projects during your school (not only automotive) (helping someone with his project or some small industrial design offers and so on) ... important is to learn some workflow basics and theory of design... also very very very !! importand is skill and practise in sketching and some 3d software (alias blender maya doesnt matter) because is important of understad of shape in space... is also good to check out some designers time lapses, behance profiles or podcasts and also consultations with experience people ( not only automotive designer )
I met Nurbs when Rhino was at version 2. Complete newbie with a fixed point in mind: car bodies. Started hundreds, never completed one. You make it look so simple and obvious that I wanna start again. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Yes, a tutorial step by step to model a car would be awsome. Maybe it's very long, but we are eager to see that. There are no better people than you to do this free on youtube.
19:40. Nice! I can see why it took 2 years just to learn Alias alone after all the other knowledge you'd accrued with Maya and Max and Modo. Alias is very deep to master, in it's own NURBS way it's as deep as Houdini is for FX.
Incredibly useful tutorial - finaly someone is doing this correctly on youtube! This approach is also called "box method" - guess you can see why. Thanks!
Josef Ludvík Böhm you're welcome. I agree with you, many of the tutorials I see seems like students teaching students. A lot of misinformation out there. I'll try to break down every step to showcase more structured approaches.

😂 my apologies. I wish I would have been a bit more conscious about that when I made this video. I think at the time I didn’t have a good understanding of what is the basics to others.
I think I got better along the way though and maybe my cell phone series does a better job. Hope this didn’t discourage you, this ain’t basic at all.

Your work is absolutely amazing, you teach soo damn good. I learned entire software from you and I admire you soo much, but. I kinds Don't like your design, I mean I love it 80% but personally I can suggest better stuff for 20% design,. And yes, I love overall shape

Do you have recommendations for other good channels/tutorials and which should be enjoyed with care?
I'm pretty new at 3d modeling and kinda learning from poly modeling method, I don't know much about automotive modeling but also interested in it, sorry if this question is amateur, but when you turn on the wireframe(?) I notice they look like polygons connect to each other, but some part like the surface between the wheel arc and fender kinda like an N-Gon. yet the whole surface just work and the transition just smooth.
I started with NURBS modeling in Maya, but we were training to make patch models without trimmed surfaces. This was extremely tough because all lines needed to have a good flow, always quads and tangents continuation in order to get perfect good quality. Maya of course is not designed for professional CAD drawing, but that is why it was so interesting to find ways for it to work. I've avoided polygons for a long time until one day I switched to polygonal modeling and now I kinda forgot a lot. I wish to enter the class A modeling profession and I am not sure what to get into. Catia, Solidworks, Rhinocerous, Alias...
I've been using Solidworks for 4 years now and it is useful for optimizing product design via FES, topology optimization, packaging, etc. However, I started learning Alias to master surfacing, some surfacing projects are a headache to work with in Solidworks, you have to figure out what is the subject you want to gain experience in so you can choose a software.
Siemens NX is more best for surface G1,G2,G3 than solidworks.
Which software do you use for this modelling. Alias speedform, alias design, alias studio ......
And please can you do a complete tutorial step by step to model a car.

Artistry Artistry this is Alias Autostudio but you can use Alias Surface as well

dear sir, i have a question, im a vfx artist working in the advertisement industry. mostly tv commercials. i use maya for 3d modelling, and some fusion 360 for hard surface modeling. and im a motorcycle fan and i want to design motorcycles, maybe even produce my own design one day. i know some motorcycle companies use alias.
so, what makes alias special for automotive and motorcycle industry? do you think i should switch to alias for this purpose?

Richa Sharma depends what you want to model, if it’s cars and products Alias is the best, if it’s mechanical stuff like guns, fusion 360 is great for that.

Is incredible that Alias, after 20yr, you can still get stack 10 min making a simple corner and do not fix the problem! must be automatic.(9:49>17:17 still not look good)

Do you do your rappid prototyping on alias too ? Or you use something else for that
Depending on the project, I'll use Alias for automotive stuff, Rhino for more product stuff and modo for more organic stuff.

Auto studio
This is the most “real” alias video on the whole internet. Wanna learn? Get used to spending a whole day on one blend. Fighting, failing, trying again and starting over. It’s the hardest lesson to learn about class A modeling. Shit takes TIME. This ain’t no subD, blender cad. Strap in and get ready to dive into the smallest detail on your model. Ray…how about a repost of this with the new corner blend tool from your new videos! Maybe 5 min max on that last nightmare blend.
Damn is it harder than blender? godamn blender so trash sometimes u take hours bro just to align some edges and polygons to keep the fluxe correctly, the reflections be hella weird if you dont align your polygons inna perfect way, its a bit stressful, ALIAS is harder? thought it was easier and CAD focused...??

brezov prut both now, I’m using nurbs in most my videos but starting 2020 I think, they added sub-d modeling which is based off of t-spline

this is so brutally impossible to do in sub-d. always jealous of you alias guys. not that its any easier in alias by any means but at least the tech supports beautiful surfacing and highlight control.
I started my career as a polygon modeler and once I found nurb modeling I knew it was the only way to get perfect surface control. It's a hard journey but understanding sub-D modeling makes it a bit easier than starting with no experience.
