  • In this review, we go for a suitably attired day out in the West Midlands in a wonderful 2021 MG HS Plug-In Hybrid Exclusive to see how practical it is, what it is like to drive and what it is like to own. Be prepared for in-jokes for fans of a certain long-running spy film franchise, references to Peter Serafinowicz's seminal spoof science series Look Around You, a stately home, hatred for heating and ventilation controls in the touch screen (again), correct finance information, masses of rear space (again), scrolling rear indicators (without them being pointed out), a very difficult tribute to William Woollard (again), attempts to prevent being sued by one of Germany's largest car makers (yet again) and a wonderful electric tailgate... Nothing untoward, then!

    Excellent Joseph, what a fabulous vehicle. Looks to be really good quality and white suits it also. You have done well to get the video out so quickly.
    I am suprised to see that there could be a facelift coming already!

      Thanks David! Yes, we had a lot of fun in the limited time we had in this extremely rapid HS PHEV. Mr Franks did well to put it together to quickly. White does suit an HS, I would definitely agree. Yes, that is a big question with the MG fan community at the moment about when the new facelift will come....

    Certainly a very amazing vehicle. I'm sure Mondeo Vignales and other top of the range cars are well above £30,000 at this stage. An intriguing alternative with a warranty that people will find very attractive.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting

      Yes, as I mentioned, the comparable Hyundai Tucsons are much more expensive when comparably equipped with only, at best, mild hybrid capability, which sort of puts things into context. The warranty is a big selling point, there is no doubt about that.

  • @colinhicks4174

    Most of my journeys are medium to long. Even the medium would completely deplete the battery and the engine by itself is not that efficient. The Kia/Hyundai/Toyota's are all more efficient after battery depletion. One owner reported 80mpg on a Prius Plugin on engine alone. Although I suspect they were not driving quickly. And none of them have anywhere near the power of the MG. The Mini Countryman S E does; 225hp, but suffers the same issue. The 1.5 3cyl is not that efficient by itself.
    I calculated the total range of the MG to be approx 500km/300mi due to the small fuel tank.
    A pity because the car itself looks great, surprised about the lack of front parking sensors but the 360 camera make up for that.
    Any plans to test other hybrids or plug ins from other brands?

      As you know, sir, Tweed Jacket Reviews is going on hiatus after the end of the year. We cannot afford to keep making the episodes as we only get back between five and ten per cent of what we invest into the channel to keep it running in terms of revenue. This is totally unsustainable, and Tweed Jacket Reviews is by far the most expensive type of video to make, so we be reducing output to probably about three or four a year. Whether we will be filming any more electrified cars at the moment, I couldn't really say.

    Its annoying that the regenerative braking comes on automatically everytime you take your foot off the accelerator. I understand the importance of regen to put energy back into the battery however the whole idea with energy efficiency... is not to brake. Plus there are times when you dont want to be braking - you just simply dont want to be accelerating but you dont have this option.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 года назад +1

      The MG5 EV I drove the day after this did have different levels of regenerative braking, but I didn't notice it in this one. Maybe that would be a better option?

    £32K? Hmm, great car/spec/looks/performance but for me personally its priced dangerously close to a niro ev, and with niro ev you might aswell go the whole hog and go fully electric, especially now that we are heading towards "forced electrification"!!

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 года назад +1

      The Niro is available as a plug-in hybrid too, which is interesting. Some people want the capability of both petrol and electricity, and this car delivers in spades. It is comparably priced or cheaper than virtually other plug-in hybrid, but, as you say, there are a multitude of other powertrains available in similar cars which may suit better for some. This was a lot of fun to drive, however, due to all that power!

    Nice car but too expensive for a car that is an unknown quantity for example customer service and reliability. I think that MG is missing a trick with their cars. The general public would overlook the badge and the country of manufacture if they sold their cars for not just a bit less than other makers but a a lot less for example 20k after the GOV. grant for the MG5. MG have far lower overheads and labour costs plus China make the batteries. I would rather have a Lexus for the kind of money the MG HS costs.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  3 года назад +3

      I think the cars are already competitively priced for what they are, especially with the warranty. Having driven a top specification HS Exclusive manual last year, I was very impressed with the quality of it, it certainly felt like a £23,000 car, which is the same price as a base Tucson with a weaker engine, for example. Any plug-in hybrid is massively more than the standard petrol model, and this is one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest plug-in hybrid on sale. MG's sales have massively increased over the last year, and so I think that they are getting something right. Lexus do probably make better cars, but they are more expensive. It really depends on what you want.
