  • I've long-heard that the ‪@sennheiser‬ e906 is single-handedly the best microphone for mic'ing a guitar cab. But how exactly should you go about e906 mic placement? ‪@adamsteelproducer‬ from Hop Pole Studio was around #42GSfive to help me out!

They're definitely _one_ of the best mics for mic'ing a guitar cab - and practical, flexible and affordable too. Their older cousins, the 421, is great in it's own right too (and fantastic on bass), if more expensive and impractical. Other than the 906, 421 and 57, I really like the Beyerdynamic M201. And a lot of these I like in combination with a ribbon, some good choices from affordable to spendy are: Cascade Fat Head, Beyerdynamic M160 (also good on it's own), Royer R-10 (also good alone), Extinct BM9 and Royer R-121. And with condensors, I like the Soyuz 1974, or the Soyuz 023 Bomblet if you want a sound almost like a blend of LDC and smooth ribbon.

I just used a 906 as a Single Over-Head on a 'Punk/Rock/Pop' Drum Kit....(split the Ride/Crash Cymbals, centered over KICK Drum, w/flat EQ setting on Mic.., easy with the Gate, High Pass the EQ@200z , Light Compression to Taste....)
    Try It...
As a 'Budget Minded' Engineer, I found the Diaphragm to be Large/Robust enough to handle the LOW Freq for the Toms, AND 'Delicate' enough to deal with the High, Transient Cymbals/Snare/Hat... It's WAAY Cheaper the an AKG 414 with Almost the Same sized Diaphragm...

That was really helpful, really great space in Studio C at gear street to film in with this Sweetwater presentation format Emily. Adam was great to meet and hear his thoughts here.

Do you make some post eq? I always have too much low end if mic live. I have always to remove lows from eq even when the amps sound good in the room

I was thinking that there's 2 ways to mic a cab: the wrong way, and the right way. 😸
