Great example why I love pairing these two together all the time when recording. The SM57 has the classic mid-high cut, and the e906 has an incredibly smooth but wide dynamic range. They balance each other perfectly when blended.
I have both and don't hear much difference in a live club situation but I find the 906 easiest to set up, I let it hang over the front of my combo amp. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
I think the "both centered" part was a winner. You get the definition of the e906 and the meat of the SM57 rolled into one. It's different in a stage situation: you want the e906 because people won't hear the difference anyway, and they don't need a stand.
I have both and use both together with high/low pass to blend them. Works good. This channel has such awesome videos for teaching us to be better customers/better techs. Thank you.
@@butcher-peteboth ways around then choose whichever mixes best, E906 mellow in the highs (relatively) often the pep of SM57 is welcome, depends on the music, in the bass I high pass such that differences aren't important (to me) ... it's about the higher mids/treble.
Firstly, the amp sounds mint! The mics panned hard L&R pleased my ears muchly. I think placement and distance will broaden the differences, which in this example are subtle, especially after whatever youtube does with their compression. But the amp…. Sighhh ‘to die for’ superlative just about nails it. ;))
Thanks! I’ll take credit for the amp sound. The guitar stylings of Brian put it over the top. PS that’s why I’ve switched to 4K uploads so YT compresses the audio less.
@@PsionicAudioAudio is such a small part of the overall bandwidth required for a video that it should already be maxed out at lower resolutions. At least that’s what I hear. It’s worth looking up tests of what RUclips does currently before spending rendering time and bandwidth on 4k!
From what I can hear the 57 is a bit spikier and maybe more detailed in the top end, the e906 is rounder and more balanced. I own a e609 and prefer it onstage due mostly to the lower profile on an amp and it can just be hung through the amp handle instead of having another stand onstage.
The blend is very nice, not sure if the upper mid peaking is the amp, guitar, speakers, mic or playing style. But there is a definite honk in there. I bet it would cut really well in a mix. I kind of like the slightly darker sound of the e906. I think both mics would be great mixed together. Curious how it will sound with a crunchy and all out distorted tone too.
Both sound great - I like them hard panned. In my experience both mics cut out some low end, which I find helpful. Personally, I tend to prefer old omni dynamic mics in the studio but I know your room is not ideal for this - though I do enjoy the sound of vintage carbon comps rattling sympathetically in their parts bin...
Nice comparison. Never used the e906 but have lots of other mics I've tried on guitar cabs. My personal favorite on electric guitars (if I could only have one mic) is the Beyer M160. I like to pair it with a SM57 for just a bit more upper mids.
i like the 906/609 for live work because i can point it center cone and forget it. 57 is more often than not too bright center cone and i have to offset it, much pickier to placement. the 906 just saves time on the job for me
Ive had my eye on an e906 for years, but the sm57 has always been good enough it's hard to justify the cost. That being said I see they are on sale right now 🤔
The pickin' on the Tele sounded great. But to tell the truth, by the time it got thru YT and the internet and my computer and speakers and into my 70 year-old ears, I couldn't hear the difference. They both sound good.
Hard to beat a sm57. The 906 sound similar to the 57 and they sound good combined. You nailed the phase good mic placement. Another alternative is to tape a pencil condenser to a 57 then you get almost perfect phase. I use a large diaphragm condenser and a 57. Personally like what a condenser brings(top bottom and detail). Good stuff!
Do you have any tips ? I need a glassy belllike strat tone to do some hendrix doublestop plays when the guitar-volume knob is lowered and a good lead tone when the volume knob is hightend. So far I have been struggeling to capture the sound of my amp to my liking with these two mics.
Love the e906. One thing that’s not captured here, is as you move the mic to various places on the cone, it does a better job in more positions. The SM has character of course, but if you want your amp sound captured - go with the Senn.
Well that one sounded cool but it was less accurate in that the mids shift around a bit. It would be a creative choice rather than a documentary choice.
most of the time the 57 is what I want in a mix as opposed to the 906. differences were quite pronounced on my headphones (SRH840) These days I like a Telefunken M81 and a Heil PR30 combo. absolutely immaculate sounding guitars out of those 2
I miss my M201, M160, R121, and TLM103. But I’m also trying to use relatively inexpensive readily available mics for these videos so people know what they’re hearing.
@@PsionicAudio my 201 is basically a permanent fixture on snare top. Though I used it on cello last night for some weird ass neo classical “frequency healing” type music, and it was fantastic for that! Sure would love some M160’s though!
amazing that this was posted the same day i came to search for this exact comparison. this video definitely made me want them both. unless there's a mic with a 57 and a 906 body?? (anybody know?)

These 2 mics compliment each other nicely.

Sounds awesome. That mic combo has been one of my faves for years for close micing.
Nice comparison sir. We feel like everyone should have one of each in their toolkit.
Fantastic. These are the two mics I use on my cabs. I like the blend of both.
i work on live gigs with both mics with great results and i prefer the 906 on fender amps because they don't need the extra bite .

I have several of both and I love them equally honestly.
Can’t wait to get home so I can listen on some better speakers than my phone. Thanks, Lyle!

I already have. It’s a matter of the codec YT uses. Much better audio quality on the 4K stuff.

Epic comparisons...have been debating, a 57 or a 906.....answer = both...I dig my Senn 935, 906 is next for the mic locker....thx Lyle.

the cool thing about the 906 is that you can just hang it down from the top of your amp without having to use a mic stand.
Can't speak for the mics but the combination of player/guitar and amp sound great to me (wish I could sound like that)

I had some EV omni dynamics that were really cool but you definitely heard the room. And as you say, this is not the room you want to hear.
That's some nice playing.
Sounds great! Nice pickin too!
That's really good guitar playing !

Can’t go wrong with either. The e906 is definitely smoother and tonally more to my liking.
Ive been trying to capture the right sound with these two mics for ever. its so much fiddeling around. but this video gives me hope...

Yes. Sell the e906. I hated it. SM57 smokes it. I added a Royer R10 after returning the Sennheiser.
@@PsionicAudio damn. that mic is expensive
Listening with Bose headphones, the e906 definitely has more low end. Since I like a lot of low end on guitar, I prefer it.
I think overall the SM57 was the better sounding. But that amp and Tele are just great together.
my fav mic combo on a proper sounding AC30 is a Beyerdynamic M201 + Royer 121

Well that’s why this is a 2.5 minute first test. Next will be placement/distance tests with the e906.
Hmm, sounds like I was arguing with you. Actually agreeing with you, it’s just that the coffee hasn’t kicked in. Sorry man.
No worries; you got plenty of leeway with me. You convinced me to get rid of my Mesa and keep my 68 Pro Custom.@@PsionicAudio
It seems that one is better off using multiple mics to get a better representation of actual sound.

The differences are very apparent on my HS7s and DT 770 Pros. And in my car. But the iPhone only hints at the changes.

Try the 201 on the *side* of a snare. Move up for more attack, down for more snares. Sounds great, out of the way of sticks, nulls out the hats more.
I switched to the e906 from the SM57 live just to stop our clumsy drummer kicking it every time he passed my amp!
