  • Here's a video that's been sitting around for over a year now. On December 29th, 2021, I chased CN L509 between Joliet and Aux Sable, Illinois with a rare EJ&E SD38-2 leading! Typically, L509 will have one or two IC SD70s, so seeing it with an old J unit was a real treat. The train operates on entirely ex-EJ&E trackage and includes a run down the River Line! I figured it was time I posted this neat little video, so I hope you enjoy!

Nice to still see some of the J engines running.. I catch them every now and then in Griffith along with some IC engines also. I always watch out for the old J engines that were like a brownish color with the arrow... Used to see them a lot now I hardly ever see them. Sad that the J and IC are gone now.

Nice to watch. I was a locomotive engineer on the "J" for 34 years, last 20 out of Jolliet. BUT, the retirement hs been GREAT TOO.

Nice chase of the Canadian National train #50991-29 on 29 December 2021, Sam! I was looking at Google Maps to try to figure out how this train would travel to get to Aux Sable, Illinois. It appears to me that the train leaves the Candian National's former Elgin, Joiet and Eastern Yard and heads north to a point north of the DuPage River bridge where a branch line turns to the left. That spur goes south through Plainfield, Illinois, and crosses Interstate Highway 80 just east of the I-80 exit for Minooka, Illinois at Ridge Road. As the former EJ&E tracks continue to travel on an embankment, they cross the CSX owned former Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific tracks over which the Iowa Interstate Railroad has trackage rights. The former EJ&E branch continues south to the former Commonwealth Edison Dresden Nuclear Power plant with another branch heading west toward Morris, Illinois.

Thanks! And you’d be correct with that. It ran up the Leithton Sub and hopped on the River Line in Plainfield before heading southwest.

Great chase Sam! Never been to Joliet to railfan. Used to train there and near the nuclear plant in Marseilles when I was in the Army National Guard .

Thanks! You can get a lot of action there with both CN and BNSF.

Nice. I grew up next to the J. It still hurts that it’s gone. We spent many nights down at the track waiting to see if the late night #21 to Waukegan would come by.

Thanks! I live up by Waukegan. I wish I could’ve been around to see ‘em. It’s a shame CN has no business up in Waukegan anymore. Seems like they only ever go as far as North Chicago these days.

@@SamLovesTrains Yeah, I heard they had basically shut down that section. I think they were talking about cutting it out but didn't. In the old days they brought coal trains up there to the plant and also moved taconite trains through there as well. There's pics of it on the EJE Archive site.
