Thanks for making me quit pulling my hair out. What little I have. You are right. The Dongles are NOT plug and play. This video was worth the hour it lasted installing the dongles and running the software the correct way. SDRtrunk has a learning curve. Other than that, I'm listening. KX5E
I have been use DSD+ Fast Lane, and saw this Video a while back, but then tried to find it and could not. tonight it was in my youtube feed. so i locked the channel in my favs and will set this up tomorrow. I might be playing this multiple times and start and stopping this till i get it all setup. :) thanks for doing this.
Wow, thanks for the effort. This was very helpful with setting up two RTL-SDRs. I nearly overlooked the serial number issue if not for your instruction.
Thank you for this video. I will watch video numerous times before I begin to set it up, unlike trying to install step by step while watching as I did on the other video. Hopefully this time I will be successful in installing everything properly this time.
Excellent tutorial! I'm a long-time feed provider to Broadcastify (Radio Reference) with decent technical skills, but could never get SDR to work. However, your video and SDRTrunk have made all the difference in the world. The step by step instructions from install to configuration was great. I was up & running in no time. Well done :-)
Thanks Joshua, great walkthrough. One thing I noticed is having the tuners connected to a USB 2.0 port instead of a USB 3.0 made the additional devices in command prompt disappear and it only showed the 2 real devices, IDs 0 and 1, as it should. Radio Reference 100% worth it.
Great, detailed tutorial. Could I get away with just one SDR? Police in my area is encrypted, so I don't have a lot to listen to. Am I correct that the SDR can only tune (listen to) one frequency at a time, so that means I might miss some traffic / conversations?
My SDR can tune to as many as 5 frequencies all at once as long as they are all working the 2400hz range of each other. One may work as long as all your frequencies are close together.
Hello, great tutorial. I'n just wondering why there are two sdr devices. Also, can I put a conventional frequency mixed with the control freq? thank you for this great video. Also, will this scan MSWIN P25 PHASE 2?
I'm not familiar with ADS-B so i can't answer with certainty. However, you can revert the SDRs back to factory settings using the same tool used to change the serial numbers. So far, after changing the serial numbers on my SDR devices i have still been able to use them with all the other softwares (that i use with SDR) with no issues. Hopefully this helps answer your question.
BIG THING is turn off the stupid waterfall at the top! It's a resource hog! Most everything I had seen in the past said no need to assign each SDR dongle with a different serial number. I've never done that on my two dongle system. I think the setup automatically sees the additional dongle and bandwith. I might be wrong on that. Some videos show assigning two different SN# others don't. I've never set my correction to -3.9 always auto. I'll have to try that to see if I see any difference. UPDATE: I tried that and the control channel didn't stay locked. So no difference for me anyway. Also if you get no audio then check the modulation setting C4FM or LSM. All six of my local county systems in Ohio are LSM. Some of mine are simulcasts, so I get some stuff from more than the county I have on at the time. It gets complicated for a first timer to start locking out frequencies, changing colors etc...I've left everything talkgroups etc in mine as it came downloaded from Radio Reference. Someone new to this setup might want to make sure they've got it up and running good, before making changes. Most of my traffic is either county State Police, County Police or Fire. I only set my local township to (Priority 1) which is in one of my six systems. Most of my other counties seem to take the main police or fire in top priority as it is. They're active 99% of the time the system is up and running, so I've never needed to lock anything else out. I've deleted some unused stuff talkgroups etc...It doesn't seem to speed anything up nor did I notice any big change. I'm only running a dual core setup with 6GB of ram and it handles it. I think they recommend around 8Gb quad core.
Is there any particular science as to how you came up with "-3.9" to control the drift of the RTL-SDR after it warms up??? I'm right down the road from you in Santa Fe and using one of SDR-Plays SDR's to monitor Galveston County traffic by the way!!
Yes, you can. However the amount of channels it can hear and switch to will be limited to i think a 3K range from the control channel you are monitoring if i remember correctly. However adding a second one at anytime is an option and it will give you the ability to get further away from the control channel in the event there are other channels further then 3k away. Hopefully i explained this correctly.
hey great video and thanks so much. I have a question im getting ready to do a two dongle setup with sdr sharp and unitrunker so do i have to run zadig for both dongles and can i use same outside antenna i have for both of them with an antenna splitter like you have ?
Are you talking about scanning analog through SDR Trunk? I do know that once you assign an SDR to the SDR Trunk software i don't think you can share that said SDR with another software at the same time.
@@TechDadAdventures How would I combine Analog DMR, and P25 traffic into 1 broadcastify feed? The county next to me does it somehow.. they are using SDR dongles... thanks for your help!
@KI5SIJ i dont understand. Then this is contradictory to what you state in your video. How can we listen to "project 25 phase 2" (which, if im getting this right, IS, by my basic understanding, a flat out encrypted form of communication) if you say at 38:57 onward, that you cannot listen to encrypted communications? As far as i know, isn't that WHAT p25 phase 2 IS? Are you saying they operate on p25 phase 2 (or phase 1 for that matter if its the same idea) and their comms Wouldn't Be obscured/scrambled/encrypted?? If that was the case why can a digital trunking scanner not pick up anything p25 phase 2 related? Why dont they sell them then? I mean even a uniden sds200 cant pick up p25phase 2, right??? Or no?? Im confused as hell! I always thought Theres a reason a baofeng uv5r for example cant pick up anything other then analogue transmissions in 2023, and most not even in use anymore by anything govt. Related, (besides the obvious frequency limitations, limited to 136-173/400-519 which i dont know any police that operate on these bands. Only Just like the universities and such in my area. Everything else is above 800 where im at or is SUPPOSEDLY, i get mixed results off radio reference where on the first page theres initial listings saying the usual 800hz freq.s and all, but when you click on where it says Sherrif, you gwt to separate page with 10x the initial pages listings, and basically the ones i WANT the Most and the ones that matter, are under where it says license type p25 phase 2, and then under it all gives a bunch of DEC,HEX numbers/letters, and Mode with "it" either being D, or DE, which i do not understand) and thought even with a good motorolla 600mz-900mhz capable device, it cant pick up police, fire, ems, even WITH the "frequencies" handy (853.212 being one for example, copied off radio reference) and why they dont pick up anything other then static? Love your channel man. Love the content. And you DEFINITLEY now your stuff dude. Youre mad smart. But maaaann this stuff is crazy complicated to me lmao
Lol I hope so. New Ham and tried that last video and have it almost working but will try this first. WB5CAN . I changed the serial numbers on the SDR's however when I start the program it shows error on one of the tuners. It showed 2 tuners initially so no problems there. However only one tuner shows working and the other shows error
Also, something else to check. If you are using them on a USB hub you may need to change it out with a powered USB hub. If you have them both connected directly to your computer then maybe disconnect the one that has the error out and try plugging it into a different USB port. It could be a USB power issue if the two ports you are connected on are a shared bus.
This video is amazing and SDRTrunk works way better than DSDPlus.

Thanks for the info, I’ll have to check that out and see if that’s the case for my setup as well.
What a great tutorial. Nice work man👍
Great Tutorial, works for me using 1 SDR
Very, very informative. Thank you very much.....
Thanks partner, can't wait to try it!
Two yrs ago I built a 5 SDR HS/fan cooled array, with Nooelec V3 SDRs, that I run SDR Trunk on.
That sounds very interesting
Well presented and explained!
Thanks
have you messed around with SDRangel at all? its a learning curve coming from SDR# ha but i like it

I just started messing with that number until I found a number that seemed to provide a stable connection
Can I get by with a Genuine V2 RTLSDR and a new V3? Thanks!
I only have 1 RTL SDR, can I still follow your method ? Thank from Jakarta
Yes, you can. However the amount of channels it can hear and switch to will be limited to i think a 3K range from the control channel you are monitoring if i remember correctly. i'm not 100% sure since i never had success with unitrunker. I have tried several systems and so far only DSD+ Fastlane and SDR Trunk work for me.
So if I also want to scan analog on the same computer do I need a 3rd dongle for the analog traffic?

i haven't done that yet but let me play around with it and i'll find out. May be a great scenario which may result in another video lol.
hi I did exactly what you did for the .bat file and when I click it the cmd prompt opens briefly then disappears. nothing else pops up either.
You will need to make sure the path to the dsd applications are correct in the batch file. Feel free to email me at jbumgarden@gmail.com
My laptop won't recognize that the dongles are even plugged in. 😢
Can it get P25 Phase 2?
Yes indeed

Did you ever get this working?
