If your garage door won't open, this video should really help...
How to Fix A Garage Door Opener - the opener shown is the Craftsman 1/2 HP 315 model, however many brands are nearly identical.
There's lots of things that can go wrong with a garage door opener. If you are having problems with it hopefully this video will give you some good clues as to what can be causing the problems:
First start with the obvious and easy to check problems...
Is there power on in the home?
    Assuming yes,
When you push the main button to open the garage do the lights blink or come on at all?
is there anything blocking the path of the door, if it's open is there something in the way of the sensors like a spider web or are they misaligned?
Most sensors have an indicator light that tells you if they are working and the path is clear. If it's not your garage door lights should blink when you try and open it.
There is also the chain, which may occasionally break, although not often. This should be obvious to spot.
If the garage door labors to open but stops then you may have a broken torsion spring. They should look something like this... if they appear to be broken, be careful they are under a lot of tension and can seriously injure you. If you aren't handy call a garage door repair service, if you are handy be sure to really understand what you are about to undertake as injury is likely if you don't know what you're doing.
If the springs appear to be fine check the track on both sides of the door. If they appear bent or misaligned this may be a problem.
If the lights didn't blink then you may have a bad component in the opener.
If your main garage door opener button on the wall will open the garage door but not your remote or keypad, it may be just a bad battery that you can replace.
If your garage door makes a sound like it's going to try and open but fails, and the torsion springs are in tact you may have a bad capacitor.
Capacitors can also disable the motor entirely.
Unplug your opener before attempting to take it apart. A screwdriver or ¼" socket should be all you need.
Open the housing and inspect the components. If the gears appear stripped that's likely the cause. The motor can burn out but it's not a common occurrence.
Depending on the capacitor type it may be easy to diagnose, if there are abnormal bulges or it appears to be leaking then it's likely bad and needs to be replaced however the capacitor may appear to be fine and still be the problem.
Check the power board and the control board, you should remove them to inspect both sides. If either of them appear to have bulging capacitors or areas that have black charring or appear to have burned it has likely failed.
Most of the parts you need are available on several websites including eBay. Just be sure to verify with the seller before purchasing that it will fit your opener.
While this video covered some of the most common reasons for a non functioning garage door opener, hopefully this has provided you with at least a good starting point and checklist.
Thanks for watching & Good Luck!

Thank you for this video! I bumped one of the sensors when I was taking the trash out. Your video saved me all kinds of time, frustration, and money! All in all...I was 1:29 into the video and then went outside and aligned the sensors in about 5 seconds!
    Boom!
    All fixed!!!
    Thank you Andrew...God Bless!

Andrew, Thank you so much for all your responses! There are two cables which wide up on a reel on opposite sides of the door. There is a button that can be pushed with a screwdriver ... it will release/reset the tension. Once this was done, the door has been moving up/down as before. Thank you again as you were extremely helpful in assisting with diagnose!

Thanks Mr. Andrew Hill for the video. At the end there you mention that if the door is trying to open and sounds it, but it's not, then try the capacitor etc. My door actually opens about 5 inches and stops. There's something with the chain that doesn't want to go more the a few inches. Even is the door is disconnected from the middle 'trolly' the chain will spin a bit and stop. Any ideas?

Fixed door won’t close. Thanks for sharing all this. I did a lot of work troubleshooting. Replaced the eyes that looked like they had glaucoma. Made sure the wires were connected. Spayed the rails twice. In the end I gave up and called the professionals. All they did was rotated the little blue button on the motor, so it had more force. Try pulling the red handle hanging down to release the trolly and push the door down by hand. If there is a spot that seems a little difficult, that is where the motor thinks it is hitting someone and retracts the door back again. Don’t think that was discussed in this fine helpful video.

Andrew... great video... I've not replaced the capacitor yet...doesn't seem to have any visible damage to it.... we had a lightening storm today and lost power to the house for a short time... when power came back on the garage door didn't work.. There is a "clicking" sound when I push the remote... and I'm thinking it might be a relay that activates the motor... have you had any experience with that??? If the capacitor is bad would this click and try to start but not start??? Just wondering... Thanks...Jerry Upchurch

Hi Andrew, Great video. I have a Overhead Door model 696cd/b. It may have taken a power surge, I'm not sure. When I opened up the unit, the close limit micro-switch was jammed in the "closed" position, I replaced it and now it works fine as long as the door is not connected. It opens and closes normally at it's limits until I attach the door, then it stops about 8 inches open, the light is not blinking and it does not reverse by itself. When I press the remote or wall switch again, it goes back down. The "up" and "down" force controls make no difference (that's what the owners manual says to check). They turn 360 degrees with some clicks at some point. Are they broken? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Andrew Hill I didn't know blinking lights meant there was an obstruction. When you explained that, knowing that there was no obstruction and that the sensors were not misaligned, I checked the wiring at each end of each sensor, and sure enough one connection at the opener end was loose! Thanks again.

Andrew Hill Oh oh, spoke too soon. This morning when the temperature dropped, the door wouldn't close all the way again and the lights blinked. Later when the temperature warmed, it worked again. It seems to be temperature related. The only time it fails is when it's cold out. Any ideas Andrew?

Hi Andrew. Thanks for the video. I am stuck on a trouble shooting issue and looking for a direction to go. The backup battery is new and fully charged. When the battery is connected and AC power is disconnected, the green opener power light is on, and the light on the wired push button is on but yet the door will not operate. Plug the main power back in and the door operates fine. Everything seems right Battery, voltage, amperage.. Just looking for a nudge where to look next.

Hi Andrew, my brother has a lift master 1/3 hp that you have to hold the main control unit inside garage down to close the garage. The light flashes. Can not close with car remote. No problems opening anywhere. I have checked sensors for cob webs and cleaned. I am assuming the sensors are not aligned properly. Do I run a string and apply a string level in order to align or what? And where do I place the string? Thank you for your time.

Thanks for posting this video. It didn't quite address my problem. I have an older Alastair garage opener. The door opens and closes with the manual button in the garage, and opens with the remotes but only sometimes. I've replaced the batteries but it still only opens once and then will not work again. I can hear that opener clicking when I hit the button on the remote, so something is happening, but it's as if it gives up after using the remote once. Any ideas?

Hi Andrew, just fixed the sensors on one garage door and it works normal. The other is the problem. When we push the wall door opener, we hear a click and light goes on but there is no attempt to open. We tried moving the capacitor to the working garage door and it worked so we believe that is fine. We looked over the remaining electrical board, etc and do not see burned components or anything that looks abnormal but also don't know what normal is. Thoughts????
    Thanks in advance,

Hmm.... if you have a step ladder you can probably flip the latch of the release cord. and then let it down. You may have a torsion spring or pulley problem, which can be expensive. If you have a neighbor you know that is handy, maybe ask if they'll take a look at it. If they fix it on a Sunday you'll likely be paying extra. I can't do much without being there though. Sorry.

Good info. It was our gear, which we replaced with no problem. Now, the door is totally misadjusted. I think the problem is that while the chain was off to replace the gear, we ran the opener up and down several times to make sure it was working properly, maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I think. So help! How do I readjust the travel of the door starting from scratch. It's not just a little off, it's WAY off. Thank you! Sandy

My Craftsman Diehard garage kept making the "clicking noise" and the light blinked on and off without opening or closing the garage door. I then unplugged the power cable of the garage door and left it unplugged for about an hour. When I plugged it back in, it started to work fine again. I'm not sure why it happened, but unplugging it for awhile appears to work. Try it out first and see if it helps!

Andrew, I've got a Genie H8000D model. Yesterday my wife attepted to close the door, but didn't see that I had placed a large plastic garbage bin under it (I was doing some yard work)...the garage door came down and slammed onto the garbage bin, then she pushed the up button and the door got stuck and now it won't go up or down, (unless we do it manually). The led sensor lights are lit and the lights work OK, so it's not a power issure or a Torsian springs issue. When we attempt to open, there is no motor sound at all. Is there another 're-set' button or 'reboot' button on the inside. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Question? Garage door would go up, then stop, and we'd have to re-click to get it to eventually go back up. Now the chain doesn't move at all; sounds like it wants to open, but the chain doesn't move. A while back I noticed a metal threaded cable alongside the door that was just hanging there. I thought this cable somehow wrapped around the metal wheels of the garage door. But could this cable actually be the tension cable? Yesterday when I tried to open the door, it went up a few inches, then stopped, and I watched it slowly collapse/close down, like there was nothing holding it from falling down. Any ideas? Could we self fix (not too handy), maybe the motor, but is that cable related to the tension coils? The ones that can cause serious injury? Thank you!

    Hi Andrew,
The garage door opener on the wall does not work. The remotes in the car do work. Have any idea what the problem is??

Hi...have a Chamberlain whisper deluxe garage door opener. When i depress the remote the door raise just a few inches from the ground. My sensor on the right is green and the one on the left is yellow. Does this mean they are out of alignment or something else? They are clean and not obstructed. Trying to fix it my self. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Andrew. My opener works just fine, however after changing key pad code, the lights will not come on or flash, but I can hear click when I use light button on the control panel. I replaced the bulbs still no luck. could I have done something wrong changing the keypad code. Is this coincidence or did I mess things up changing keypad code. thanks

Could the capacitor make it work intermittently? Our goes up half way and stops but if we reset the breaker most of the time it works after that.

    Andrew,
    Al Moschetti
I have a craftsman 1/2 HP 139,53661SRT3 (3661Thru 3677). The remotes and wireless all work, reprogrammed and tested ok for one shot to open the garage door. If I want to close the door 30 seconds later it will not work. Come back minutes later and they will all work so it has to do with the timing delay. Found that if I open the door and the lights come on and the door opens, if I manually turn off the lights the remotes will work, but if the lights are left ( to go off on their own) the remotes will not close the door until the lights go off. It seems that once the door is opened the delay for the lights being on blocks any signal to the unit until they go off and resets the circuit. have you seen any thing like this and any input would be appreciated. Could there be a relay that gets stuck or is the logic board a issue. thanks Al

Hi, I have the same type of the garage opener as yours. It started that the garage door opener shut off himself. When tapping the the opener, it came back on. It then went off again after a few seconds when I hear the click. Nothing is wrong with the power outlet. Every time, when I hear the click, everything goes off. Any help is very much appreciated.

Hello Andrew. My Garage motor will run for a few seconds but will not move the door up or down. Could this be a bad gear? Oh and nothings blocking the sensors.

I have an old Genie. when I push the button, it starts to open but stops I have to push it several times before it gets going. When the door gets about half way down, I can let go. The sensor does not blink so I assume they are lined up properly. What to do?

Can the capacitor kill all lights including the wall mounted wired garage door opener? I left to go to work today and I got nothing. I have power to the overhead garage door opener, verified with an electrician wand, breaker is also fine. I even reset it. But the overhead opener and the wall mounted have no lights and no response to anything. Circuit board or capacitor I assume? I'm at work and trying to trouble shoot in my head.

I have 2 Chamberlain garage door systems. I hardly use one of them. I have no idea how one motor part fell right out of the ceiling. It appears that there is nothing wrong with the motor because it landed on a couch still attached to the chain system and still attached above the garage door opening. There are 3 bolts that held the motor in place. Should I get longer bolts or should I reattach it using a differant hole ? Go easy on me I'm a 61 year old woman thanks for any advice. I think that it will depend on whether or not it was bolted into a stud?. They were installed 12 years ago. Yet the one that I use all the time is still working fine. I'm going to check the ceiling with a moisture meter. I wonder if I could attach a two-by-four and then attach the motor to that?

Yours is the only RUclips video I could find that discusses Craftsman openers but it doesn't address my problem. We unintentionally disengaged the openers (which we've done intentionally in the past during power outages) but we just cannot get them to re-engage. Can you help?

Arggg. ...😤 none of the controllers for my garage worked. So i thought it would make sense that the problem exsisted in logistics board.
So i get the part, switch out the board. And boom was able to program my controller. Come the next day same problem persist. I tried reprogramming the remotes. No response. Even inspected eventhing to the T.
Are there any other reasons why a remote would not respond to the garage opener or vise vera.
