After the game Garry invited young Magnus and his father to go over some positions in the game in a side room with him. It was magnus’ first taste at talking with someone at that level and it was huge for him
For him to say that kasparov is the best is an absolutely high class act to respect the legend that he's always looked upto.
TBF by all stats Kasparov is superior. Even with no superior tools at the time he is so close to Carlsen peak rating, not to mention being number one for so so many years. Carlsen has a slightly higher peak rating and he probably could edge peak Kasparov, but imagine what kind of beast Kasparov would be in today's time. Carlsen can become the goat, if he has the determination to be so, but for now Kasparov has quite as safe a gap defending that place.

First and only member of the 400/400 club (which he did naturally) and first person who wasn’t on roids to do the 30/30. Not to mention he was a 5-tool player who had multiple MVPs.
Honestly when you say greatest of all time in baseball he is usually one of the first 5 names that pop in my head. Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa and McGuire do not. So there was something there besides the steroids.

It‘s just rare to have three players dominate the competition for so long while crushing all previous records as well. Federer was the first of this triumvirate and therefore always had the appeal of being the „original“, but I agree that by now, Djokovic has surpassed both him and Nadal in terms of consistency (as seen by the weeks in No. 1 for example).

Poker is a skill based game, it’s not really about luck
Professional poker games are 60% skill but most sports have some luck involved in them too a lot of soccer goals for example get scored because of unlucky openings or mistakes a lot of fights end because of lucky one punch kos luck is always involved. Try playing against a poker pro theres a 99% chance you’ll lloose all your money. I get that its not a physical sport but neither is chess, and poker at a higher level is all about math and reading your opponent. In the long run skill matters in poker and not luck thats just a mathematical fact

Now Magnus is surely better than Kasparov now, and would probably beat peak Kasparov (keeping in mind the latter did not have access to engines, so we would have to figure out just how good he would’ve been, given the same opportunities as Magnus). Magnus contended with Fabi like Kasparov did with Karpov, but both steered clear of competition later, establishing themselves as unreachable.
My very personal opinion is: if Magnus stays this strong and this unreachable for another 10 years, he will have proven the GOAT
I should also mention: a big argument in favour of Magnus is how good he is across formats, being at once champion of classical, blitz, and bullet chess
