Mickey Thomas is rarely mentioned in the "greatest of all time" discussions, but he is right there with the best of the best. Not just in the studio either. You can find live versions and he absolutely nails it. Legend.
This is the most criminally underrated and under-listened-to Jefferson-anything song of all of them. So glad you listened to it. And Mickey Thomas. That vocal range is just insane. He's hardly even trying
EXACTLY!!! So Micky was a backup singer for Elvin and Elvin decided that his gravelly voice just didn't work on that song and put Micky out front. History was made! If The Squad hasn't listened to THAT yet, it needs to go to the front of the line pronto!!
Jefferson Airplane is more psychedelic, Jefferson Starship is more classic rock and Starship is more pop. I like all three. And yes MT is a monster vocalist
I'm so glad you guys finally reacted to Jane! What a killer song! 🔥 The amazing Mickey Thomas sang lead on this one. You guys also experienced his incredible vocals on the Elvin Bishop track "Fooled Around And Fell In Love", which you reacted to in December 2021.
I can remember hearing this on the radio for the first time. I was blown away. The vocals, the guitar solo, the drive of it. That's rock n roll, baby! Unforgettable.
I think what everyone needs to acknowledge first off when it comes to Jefferson Starship is Mickey Thomas’ amazing vocals. He is one of the most underrated yet one of the all time great rock and roll lead singers. His range is ridiculous and right up there with the best of the best. He sang on the Elvin Bishop song “Fooled around and fell in love” and nobody really ever acknowledged it was him or put two and two together to say “Hey! Isn’t that the guy from Jefferson Starship?” Give this man credit - he is probably one of the top 3 greatest lead singers of all time.
It always slightly disapoints me when a 'first hear' is a song other than this one (Jane). But it's probably for the best - after doing 'Jane' most others, IMHO, can only be a slight downgrade. Great reaction, though Jay and Amber!
Mickey Thomas is one of the most talented singers in rock, and is criminally overlooked. He deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Steve Perry.
My absolute favorite Jefferson Starship song ever! My mom hated when my dad would play this because he had an ex-girlfriend named Jane, but that didn't stop me from loving it! I knew y'all would love the rocking keyboards and vocals, and I'm so glad you've finally added this to your repertoire! I will say that "White Rabbit" is definitely my favorite Jefferson Airplane song too, so I'm totally on both of your sides tonight.
Craig Chaquico is one of the best hard rock guitar players of all time. He can be flashy when he wants to be but he can also play just the perfect note at the perfect time - Billy Gibbons would be proud. His solo and fill work on this song are great. But then listen to how smooth he plays all the way through Runaway. Fantastic!
Jay & Amber, you'll love Jefferson Starship's "Count On Me" and "Play On Love" !!!!. Jefferson Starship was the best of the 3 iterations of this band IMO. Craig Chaquico did lead guitar on "Jane"! edit - the two songs I suggested have Marty Balin on lead vocals, who sang "Miracles" which you reacted to 2 months ago.
Love that you're giving props to the drummer: Aynsley Dunbar who has played with everyone from Journey to Zappa to Whitesnake to Jefferson Starship. Dude is a legend.
He knew... It was the piano that takes this song from good to next level. It highlights the syncopated guitar chunk. And the vocals riding on top of it all.
I absolutely love watching you 2 jam out and enjoy these older genres of music..the looks on your faces and the chair dancing makes me smile. Thank you for your enthusiasm and enjoyment in your reactions😊
Unfortunately I only saw them once in concert (1981), but it turns out that this was when the band had a mix of original members (Paul Kantor, Grace Slick) plus new ones (Mickey Thomas). It was one hell of a show. This was my second concert and ties for second with ABBA among my list of best concerts ever.
I think you will like their song, Stranger, which was released in 1980, with Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick on lead vocals. Rediscovered it myself a couple of years ago. The video was in heavy rotation in the early days of MTV. The guitar solo is fantastic.
@@allenwhitmer8192 They have done Sara. They've also done "Miracles", "We Built This City", "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", as well as "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" from their Airplane days.
Check out the Professor of Rock's interview with the band on the writing & recording of "JANE"! Professor is my favorite! ruclips.net/user/shorts7ldtDRIg0p0?feature=share
Try “Find Your Way Back” next. “Jane” was my introduction to all iterations of the band when it came out in 7th grade. I promptly spent the next several years digesting all their music prior.
This song just kicks!!! I agree, always my favorite Jefferson Starship tune. I love the drums, the screaming guitar, the keyboards and the vocals. Just a killer tune, timeless!!!
THANK YOU!!!!! I absolutely love watching you experience good rock songs for the first time! It brings it back for those of us who are old enough to have heard this on records/radio when we were kids. It gets me listening for more layers, anything I missed before. It's a whole new experience somehow. Thank you for sharing with all of us!!
What no one ever seems to realize is that when the lead solo is finishing, he climbs the scales to a really high place ... and then, Mickey Thomas goes up another step higher than the guitar. I don't know why no one ever mentions that but here, since Jay stopped the song right as he was coming back in, he wouldn't' have noticed it anyway.
This is by far my favorite song by Jefferson Starship. Having been a keyboardist for ? years, they are great here, but just filling in for the greatness around them. The timing is perfect here. It's just fire from top to bottom. ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥 ✌
Absolutely fire for sure, Jay . As many have said in the comments, Mickey Thomas is singing his head off. One of the all-time best R&R vocalists. I want to recommend a song to y'all -- while listening to my playlist today during yard work, I came across a jamming song similar to Jane. Satisfied -- by Richard Marx. I haven't seen many reactions to Marx. He is known mostly for his love songs and ballads, but he has a few pop-rock songs that are very good. And a couple of his slow songs are good, too. My favorite slow one is Endless Summer Nights. Beautiful melody. Romantic lyrics.
'Jane' is my favorite tune by these guys, such a solid riff to drive it. I'm going to try and steer you two over to an awesome band you've never listened too. 'Lighthouse', not to be confused with 'Edison Lighthouse'. I know you'll like 'One Fine Morning' by Lighthouse just as much as you liked this song. It's as fire as it gets. A bit like a up tempo Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago tune what with the Horns, Vocal harmonies and general funkiness of the song. Cheers.
I mentioned Jane many times. Glad you listened 😉. This is my fave JS song and probably their most rockin. Stranger is another song that again is different than this but features how good the vocals are between Mickey Thomas and Grace Slick.
Craig Chaquico wrote the guitar and I believe bass parts for this song. He started recording with them as a teenager and they glued facial hair on him so he could play in clubs(underage). He also helped write, find your way back. He writes jazz new age stuff now that he's older, and it's also very good.
A while back, you reacted to "Fooled Around And Fell In Love" by Elvin Bishop...... Same Vocalist, Mickey Thomas as this song. He is nothing short of amazing!
I blew out 3 pairs of speakers in my truck because of this song. I'm 62 so I was a young guy then. Thanks for all y'alls hard work. Love from Southeast Texas
Regarding when you were talking about the punch and force of the drums, the term used by drummers to describe it is the "Attack". A solid attack is when you really push it hard and forceful and in many cases you actually start to lead the bass instead of the other way around or act as an equal. Clever musicians can alternate back and forth between percussion being on the attack or the bass being the attacker. Getty Lee and Neil Peart from RUSH were masters of the alternating attack. Lynyrd Skynyrd also used hard attacks in some of their songs like Mr. Saturday Night Special.
Jay, that's not falsetto that Mickey Thomas is doing; he is an incredibly gifted singer and that is a belt mixed with some head voice that is just perfect and so resonant. And he does it over and over and it just blows my mind every time. I loved White Rabbit when it came out when I was a tiny kid, and I still do today, and then I associated it more with the hippie stuff from the late 60s, but then by the time this came out I was in junior high and I couldn't believe what I was hearing between the banging piano and the rock guitar, and so I learned how to play that piano part immediately, which isn't all that difficult. It took me until years later after playing and singing in bands to realize what Mickey Thomas is doing there vocally, and that to me is the primary reason that I can listen to this song absolutely over and over and over again, just to hear him do that stuff. And the overall arrangement of it is fantastic the way it builds up and then hands it off to the guitar and then the guitar builds up to that high crescendo and then hands it back over to Mickey on the vocals, it's just phenomenal. Amber, I have one from slightly before this that I bet you will love. It's called Runaway. It was a hit on the radio and it's right up your alley.
When they added Craig Chaquico and Mickey Thomas they became a different band. I call it The San Fransisco Sound. There were three notable bands from that area with a real similar vibe between 78-82 : Santana, Jefferson Starship and Journey. The key to the sound was the vocals Alex Ligertwood with Santana, Steve Perry with Journey and Mickey Thomas with Jefferson Starship all had that range that created that signature sound.
Great song, great band! Mickey Thomas is an amazing singer! Check out Find Your Way Back from them as well! Also, if you want to check out a group with a lead singer with an insanely high voice check out Triumph Fight The Good Fight live at the US Festival 1983, phenomenal band! Thank you!
Wife here.., You Guys hit this from the jump..They are ever changing their Names and Band members..., My Husband and I met one of the current members a couple years ago..Looove all their music..!!..This is definitely one of my favorite 's...MS Amber THIS IS THE MOST ROCKING SONG...However all their sounds are AMAZING..Miss Grace Slick..An OG female Rocker.!!🤘💯
I've always hated Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Starship, Jefferson Dumptruck, Jefferson Catamaran and every other version of this band...but this song is absolutely fantastic. That guitar riff, piano and killer vocals make me put aside any animus I've had for the band in its many incarnations and say without any reservation it's an outstanding song. Great reaction, guys.
The drummer was Ainsley Dunbar. He never stayed with any band for very long. He played with Journey on their first album, and left the band, and played on this album, and left the band. Why? I have no idea, but he was a good drummer.
Do you want a 4th version of this band to listen to? The KBC Band was a side project by original Jefferson Airplane members Paul Kantner, Marty Balin and Jack Cassidy. Hence the KBC. You should watch the official video for their song America.
In my opinion Mickey Thomas has one the best underrated voices in rock!
I agree. He's the counterpart to Ann Wilson. The best two voices in rock.
Mickey Thomas is rarely mentioned in the "greatest of all time" discussions, but he is right there with the best of the best. Not just in the studio either. You can find live versions and he absolutely nails it. Legend.
@chriscraftguy agreed...and Steve Perry!
to those in the know this guy has always been top tier OG
The most impressive part is that he sounds exactly the same live.
Jane was released in 1979 and 44 years later it's still fire. Mickey Thomas's voice is simply incredible, such a great song.
Their guitarist is really great on this song also.
I’ve loved this tune since first hearing it in 1979 England as a 14 year old , still played regularly in my house .
I just absolutely love this! Always have done.
@@chrisoakley5830 Craig Chaquico; fully agreed. He stepped-up to the plate and knocked it right out the ballpark!!
still fire..I learned his name today and inspired for decades💪🩷🔥🚀🩷
This is the most criminally underrated and under-listened-to Jefferson-anything song of all of them. So glad you listened to it.
And Mickey Thomas. That vocal range is just insane. He's hardly even trying
One of my favorites of their entire catalog
Yeah it's a very well done song. Held up really well over time. Highly underrated.
1000% agreed on all counts!!
It's a tragedy!
J O - Exactly, he doesn't even have to try!
What a voice on Mickey Thomas! Also loved his vocals on Elvin Bishop's "Fooled Around and Fell in Love".

They have reacted to it.
@@brucedillinger9448 But , I still don't think they have made the connection...
Wow never knew he was on that song!
Love this one
"Find your way Back" is also fantastic
Yes!
Fact check true.
My fav growing up but i think Jane has taken over the lead spot as an adult !
Definitely!
"Lay it on the Line"
One of the most criminally underrated lead guitars on this song. Craig Chaquico absolutely shreds and pushes this song to the next level.
I love the Rif on this song!
It is really one of those perfect solos. So great.
Another criminally underrated guitar solo is "Save Your Love"; almost 2:30 minutes of amazing playing.
that guitar outro is criminally too short
this song is pure songwriting perfection...
Jefferson Airplane is more psychedelic, Jefferson Starship is more classic rock and Starship is more pop. I like all three. And yes MT is a monster vocalist
that is correct sir.
Mickey Thomas was simply an outstanding vocalist and often overlooked during his run. "Miracles" is still one of my all-time favorites from them.
Miracles is Marty Balin another one of their greats!
@@tlang9476Marty had a solo hit in 1980 with a song called Hearts that was really good.
Same.
The drummer is Aynsley Dunbar, one of the greatest rock drummers in history. He was also the drummer for Journey for a number of years.
“Find Your Way Back” “ No Way Out” and “Familiar Stranger” are more Jefferson Starship 🔥 with Mickey Thomas on vocals
Micky Thomas, singing his ass off, he also sang for Elvin Bishop and the song, Fooled around and fell in love, absolutely incredible
I can remember hearing this on the radio for the first time. I was blown away. The vocals, the guitar solo, the drive of it. That's rock n roll, baby! Unforgettable.
Mickey Thomas is a phenomenal vocalist and powers up to the upper register and doesn't usually sing in falsetto. Pure vocal talent...
"It's Not Enough", "Find Your Way Back", "Stranger", and "Winds Of Change are well worth a reaction too. Mick and Slick ❤️👌 perfect vocals!!!!!!
Find your way BACK :)
Stranger and Winds of Change. 2 favorites
"Ride The Tiger" is pretty good too and Amber would love "Sara"
Stranger is good one
stranger is a great tune, total rocker!
Man, this was a favorite back in the day. Jefferson Starship never rocked harder than on this track. Classic.
LOL, apparently you’ve never heard the rest of the Freedom at Point Zero album! The title song, and “Rock Music” take it up another notch!
Thats because it was 70s
Go listen to ride the tiger and get back to me.

He's definitely way up there.
This song has one of the best build ups to a guitar solo ever , especially the 'grunt' sound Mickey Thomas makes at the start
Finally a "Jane" reaction! This song does rock! I think your next one should be "No Way Out."
Agreed. And "Stranger".
The best combo ... basically he's Steve Perry meets Brad Delp meets Lou Graham
Everybody keep getting the word out about Mickey Thomas! That guy had and still has some of the greatest pipes on him! He can SANG!!!
This was the sound of the late 70s AMBER.

This one is the BANGER! Full intensity rock. Kinda pop-predictable, but it delivers on all counts. Mickey Thomas is incredible.
That is a fair critique indeed, it is Pop all the way, with a couple of flashes of the old "Airplane" allowed to slip out.
The lead singer on this song also sang the lead on Elvin Bishop's Fooled Around and Fell in Love.
This is one of the best rock songs ever!
The musicianship is incredible! Power of the groove, awesome guitar, incredible vocals, not falsetto!
Started as a back up singer to ole Elvin Bishop that shore can play. His “ Fooled around and fell in love” Perfection. In a blue Jean jumpsuit!
